MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This program-enhancement proposal discusses the existing practice of mandatory academic advising at North Seattle Community College, including its strengths and weaknesses. Based on a theoretical framework informed by Astin’s (1999) theory of student involvement, Tinto’s (1993) theory of integration, and other pertinent research, strategies for enhancing the program to better serve all students at the institution, as well as advising staff, are suggested. Practical implications of these strategies are included, as they impact students, staff, the department, and the institution as a whole. The proposal concludes with expected outcomes to be achieved by the suggested strategies.

Lengua Madre : Educational Experiences Of Aisd Students With Spanish As A Mother Tongue, Lindsey Elena Cottle

Capstone Collection

This study examines the educational experiences of Spanish-speaking students within the Austin Independent School District (AISD), exploring the question: How do adults who grew up with Spanish as their mother tongue and attended AISD perceive their educational experiences in light of the language of instruction? Few studies capture the personal, retrospective perspectives of Spanish-speaking students in predominantly English-medium districts. This small-scale qualitative study adds narrative depth to a field often dominated by success metrics and demographic data.

Data was collected through anonymous online surveys from former AISD students who identified as Spanish speakers. Thematic analysis focused on educational backgrounds, language …

Concierge: How The Pandemic Lockdown Changed The Face Of Access Services, Stephen J. Walker

Urban Library Journal

This article addresses the changes made in Access Services in an urban college library after reopening during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic the library witnessed a downturn in patron visits and physical textbook usage as classes remained mostly online. Access Services moved from being a fast-paced, high demand service desk of print textbooks and laptops to a slower user assistance library services unit. Reopening the library to the college community and creating a safe study space for students required preparation. Various key resources such as study rooms, calculators, phone chargers, and headsets became a higher priority for students post-lockdown. …

Improving Diabetes Self-Management Skills Among Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Through Weekly Education, Carthia Joachim

Dissertations

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the major health issues worldwide, which has led to many health complications, such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage that leads to limb amputation, kidney damage, and even death (Sameer et al., 2020). Lack of self-care management is one of the reasons diabetes is becoming such an issue in society. Studies have shown that T2DM outcomes can be improved by implementing diabetes self-management education (DSME) (Hailu et al., 2019). The study evaluated the effectiveness of DSME intervention in adult patients with T2DM over 12 weeks in Orlando, Florida. Using a structured education program, the …

Sharing Our Screens, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Recently I re-watched The Truman Show, the 1998 film about a man, played by Jim Carey, who discovers that his life has been broadcast to the world as a reality TV show. Though produced a quarter of a century ago, the movie’s critique of an “always-on,” surveillant media culture felt timely and spoke to my social media-fatigued soul. But in other ways, the film reminded me that it is the product of a bygone era.

Orbital Thinking: Planetary Orbit As A Model For Neurodivergent Thought Experiences In Animation, Thomas Labow

Honors Projects

As an artist diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, the aim of my research is to artistically explore neurodivergent experiences using gravity-assisted space flight as a visual metaphor for episodic memory and the pivot between correlated ideas. “Orbit of Attention” is a short animated film that visualizes interconnected mental processes through the use of a character-driven narrative. The creative choice of depicting ideas as planets is inspired by the gravity-assisted flight path of the Voyagers’ grand tour of the solar system. In visualizing unconventional thought processes, “orbital thinking” was used to model episodic memory. As a research project, this film …

U.S-Venezuelan Relations: Personality And Foreign Policy Decision Making, Isabella D. Alvarez Chacon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, the authoritarian socialist regime leaders in Venezuela, are known for their social programs and their stance against the U.S., but only Maduro cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S., one of the most significant FP decisions of his administration. This research examines the role that the personalities of these leaders may have played in explaining their distinct FP towards the U.S. Personality helps find traits that shift a leader’s behavior that then influence how they make decisions. Previous research has shown that personality is a helpful tool for understanding leaders' strategies, but it has not …

Leadership Awakening: Shifting Towards Eco-Consciousness Through Psychedelics, Ladana Edwards

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Corporate leaders, wielding influence and decision-making power over world resources and capital, are key drivers of systemic change to address current social, economic, and ecological crises. To address the myriad complex and interdependent crises, a transformative shift in consciousness is required in leaders and leadership teams, from ego-consciousness towards eco-consciousness, which can be supported through psychedelic experiences. Shifting towards eco-consciousness can facilitate holistic decision making and an expanded sense of leadership responsibility to the planet and all its inhabitants—ultimately supporting the creation of healthier eco-nomics in our Earth community.

Shifts towards leadership eco-consciousness have the potential to open up space …

Early Palliative Care In Advanced Stage Cancer Patients: Barriers To Integration An Integrative Review, Wendy Jarrett, Rachel Girard

Master's Projects

This integrative review examines the barriers to early palliative care (PC) implementation in Stage IV cancer patients and the impact of timely PC on quality of life, symptom management, and patient autonomy. Despite clear evidence that early PC enhances patient outcomes and reduces the need for aggressive interventions at the end of life, its integration is often delayed due to insufficient standardized referral protocols, lack of education for healthcare providers, and misconceptions about its role. The studies included highlight the importance of addressing these barriers to improve care. Oncologists and healthcare providers often lack the necessary communication skills to initiate …

An Exploration Of Telemedicine Application Service Quality And Its Relevance With Patient Satisfaction, Victoria Olguin

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

When the world experienced a pandemic due to the SARS-CoV-virus (COVID-19) in 2019, a lockdown quickly took place and travel restrictions were applied, placing a barrier to in- person healthcare access. This made the healthcare settings practice alternate ways in delivering healthcare that did not necessarily have to be in-person. The evolvement of a remote setting took place, and the development and usage of telemedicine quickly accelerated. This form of healthcare has transformed the way care is delivered to patients, with many key elements shaping their experience and outcomes. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, the practice of telemedicine …

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Preparing pre-service students to teach agricultural mechanics is a difficult task due to the career pathway including a great variety of topics (Byrd et al., 2015). This study examined the trend in requirements in 1862 land-grant universities for number of courses, course credit hours, and course topics related to agricultural mechanics, as well as the total credit hours needed for degree completion in agricultural education, teacher education. Overall, the universities examined had lessened the total course credit hours related to agricultural mechanics courses from 8.33 to 11.83 credit hour requirements in 1980, to a range of 6.67 to 8.33 credit …
