An Integrative Framework For Coopetition-Based Scenarios, Marko Budler
An Integrative Framework For Coopetition-Based Scenarios, Marko Budler
Economic and Business Review
The interplay of cooperation and competition (“coopetition”) in supply chains is well studied. However, little is known about the established and evolving scenarios that exist among supply-chain actors in the presence of coopetition. The paper draws on the resource-based view and game-theoretic reasoning to develop an integrative framework with two aims. First, to classify coopetition-based scenarios with varying levels of complementarity and lastingness and to enhance the analysis of the scenarios. Second, as theoretically argued and demonstrated with a focus group discussion, the framework is developed to assist supply chain actors in strategically managing coopetition—by identifying a particular scenario and …

Engaging With Geopolitical Uncertainty: Discursive Riskwork And Western Mnes’ Divestment Announcements At The Onset Of The Ukraine War, Ana Mavretić, Anastas Vangeli
Economic and Business Review
This paper studies the geopolitical riskwork practices employed by Western multinational enterprises (MNEs) in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, focusing specifically on divestment announcements. Using a discursive riskwork framework, the study analyses how Western MNEs articulate and legitimize their divestment decisions in a novel geopolitical context. The findings reveal that Western MNEs align their corporate actions with emerging liberal geopolitical norms and values, thereby rhetorically establishing their role as responsible geopolitical actors. The paper advances the discourse-oriented study of international business phenomena, the study of geopolitical risk management beyond adherence to sanctions and reputation management, the concept of …

Change Is In The Minds Of The Beholders: A Sociocognitive Comparison Of Crisis Perceptions And Change Predictions: Insights From China, New Zealand, And Slovenia, Zhonghui Ding, Matevž Rašković
Economic and Business Review
Inspired by research on the "geography of thought" within social psychology, we present a cross-cultural comparative study of sociocognitive patterns between China, New Zealand, and Slovenia. We study COVID-19 risk perceptions and also explore predictions of economic trends under four specific economic scenarios. Our results show that the East-versus-West demarcation in terms of cultural boundaries is useful but insufficient to understand culturally driven predictions of economic trends. In times of economic downturn, such as the one caused by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there seem to be universal tendencies towards pessimism. However, significant differences emerge in times of economic growth. Hence, …

The U.S.-China Chip War: Using International Relations Theories To Explain The Reasons Behind Technological Decoupling, Nolan Tavares
The U.S.-China Chip War: Using International Relations Theories To Explain The Reasons Behind Technological Decoupling, Nolan Tavares
Honors Projects in Politics, Law, and Society
Technology has transformed the world with the help of increasing advancements in semiconductor technology. This results in countries seeking a steady supply of semiconductors globally. This thesis investigates why the United States and China have implemented a mix of technological "decoupling" policies to prioritize semiconductors. The theoretical research for this thesis utilizes international relations perspectives and concepts as a framework to examine the root causes behind these policies. By using qualitative text analysis to code sources based on international relations theories, a series of direct evidence is presented to show the causes behind these policies. Furthermore, the concepts and direct …
Rhetoric Vs. Reality: A Study Of Public Rhetoric And Private Behavior Across Party Lines, Elizabeth Callecod
Rhetoric Vs. Reality: A Study Of Public Rhetoric And Private Behavior Across Party Lines, Elizabeth Callecod
Bakerman Student Research Awards
In the United States, Republicans and Democrats are viewed as being intrinsically distinct in their moral convictions. More specifically, Republicans are generally viewed as the party which more frequently upholds and uses religious and moral rhetoric, particularly regarding sexual activity, while Democrats are generally thought to rely on more pragmatic and inclusive rhetoric. Previous explanations explore why these partisan stereotypes exist but fail to compare how these different rhetorical styles compare to the actual behavior exhibited by both parties’ members. By using measurements of how often individuals from both parties participate in sexual morally contentious activities, such as viewing pornography, …

An Evaluation Of Features Extracted From Facial Images In The Context Of Accurate Age Estimation⋆, Malik Awais Khan, Aurelia Power, Peter Corcoran, Christina Thorpe
Conference papers
Age estimation by face image recognition can be used in numerous ways with regression models to manage access control, improve security, and guarantee the protection of children online. The approaches used for predicting age—including data selection, cleaning techniques, feature extraction, algorithm choice, and hyperparameter tuning—often struggles with generalization. Furthermore, a lot of methods neglect to specifically address how extracted face features might be used for prediction. To address the lack of racial diversity we acquired a dataset consisting of different races from literature. We also examined the ability of local, global and hybrid facial features to predict ages. Two variants …

The Effect Of Variable Learning Contexts On Novel Word Retention In Adults, Emily A. Badoni
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the impact of decontextualized learning on memory recall and retention within virtual reality (VR) environments. Forty-six healthy young adult participants, both male and female, were randomly assigned to either a consistent VR learning condition (n = 23) or a diverse VR learning condition (n = 23). Both groups were exposed to the same set of 30 nonwords and their definitions across three learning phases. The participants in the consistent condition remained in the same VR environment throughout the study, while the participants in the diverse condition experienced three different VR environments. Immediate and delayed post-tests were conducted …

Resistance/Rise: Iranian Student Activism In The Late 1970s Us, Will Teague
Resistance/Rise: Iranian Student Activism In The Late 1970s Us, Will Teague
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the late 1970s Iranian student activists in the United States worked to educate the American public on the history of the US-Iranian relationship and the long-term consequences in Iran of the 1953 CIA-sponsored coup that placed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on the Iranian throne. The students directly challenged local and state governments to respect freedoms of speech, press, and assembly, and pushed President Jimmy Carter to keep his promise of injecting human rights into American foreign policy. Iranians studying in the US were not monolithic in thought, but they shared the common goal of liberating Iran from Pahlavi’s despotic rule …
Expanding Capabilities: The Impact Of International Student Mobility On Peacebuilding, Kathleen Kirk
Expanding Capabilities: The Impact Of International Student Mobility On Peacebuilding, Kathleen Kirk
Dissertations
From the 2010s to 2020s international student enrollment decreased in the United States (IIE, 2024), leading to economic, intellectual, and social ramifications and notably affecting the country’s reputation as a place that fosters intercultural understanding and innovation (IIE, 2024; Song and Li, 2022; Laws and Ammigan, 2020).While international student mobility has increased since, ongoing issues such as political polarization exacerbate international education efforts to build intercultural understanding. Yet, it is such educational efforts that are crucial to nurturing peacebuilding (O’Hair and Woods, 2024; Reardon, 2001).
This dissertation employs a global survey and semi-structured interviews to investigate how international students leverage …

Exploration In Cell Growth: Rac3 And Its Effect On Ewing Sarcomas Tumorigenic Properties, Allie Woods, Samuel De La Cruz, Catherine Garcia, Terry Jo Shackleford
Cell and Molecular Methods
Multiple experiments were conducted to measure the effectiveness of certain genes on cell growth. In the exploration of this process, RAC3 acted as the target gene and was applied to both SOX18 overexpressing and normal expressing cells (control). RAC3 is a gene that typically controls the intercellular signaling pathway of a cell. This means it helps with the movement of cells and allows for migration. The purpose of these experiments were to determine how the gene RAC3 would work when introduced to carcinogenic cells, specifically Ewing Sarcoma. Typically, RAC3 acts as a messenger for the cell, but when in conjunction with …

Structure Of A Model Lipid Membrane Oxidized By Human 15-Lipoxygenase-2, Jamil Nemri, Cosme Morales, Nathaniel C. Gilbert, Jaroslaw Majewski, Marcia E. Newcomer, Crystal M. Vander Zanden
Faculty Publications
Enzyme-mediated lipid oxidation is an important regulatory event in cell signaling, with oxidized lipids being potent signaling molecules that can illicit dramatic changes in cell behavior. For example, peroxidation of an arachidonoyl poly-unsaturated fatty acid by the human enzyme 15-lipoxygenase-2 (15-LOX-2) has been associated with formation of atherosclerotic plaques. Previous work on synthetically oxidized membranes has shown that oxidized lipid tails will change their conformation to facilitate interactions between the peroxide group and the lipid headgroups. However, this phenomenon has not been directly observed for a lipid membrane that has undergone enzyme-catalyzed oxidation. In this study, we report on the …
