Schizachyrium Scoparium (C4) Better Tolerates Drought Than Andropogon Gerardii (C4) Via Constant Co2 Supply For Photosynthesis During Water Stress, Alina Dekirmenjian, Diego Montano, Michelle L. Budny, Nathan P. Lemoine
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Climate change is dramatically altering global precipitation patterns across terrestrial ecosystems, making it critically important that we understand both how and why plant species vary in their drought sensitivities. Andropogon gerardii and Schizachyrium scoparium, both C4 grasses, provide a model system for understanding the physiological mechanisms that determine how species of a single functional type can differ in drought responses, an issue remains a critical gap in our ability to model and predict the impacts of drought on grassland ecosystems. Despite its greater lability of foliar water content, previous experiments have demonstrated that S. scoparium maintains higher photosynthetic …

Studies Of Oxidopyrylium Ylide Dimers And Their Utility In The Synthesis Of Densely Functionalized Troponoids, Daniel V. Schiavone
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Herein, we describe our efforts to investigate mechanistic considerations of oxidopyrylium ylides and their use in cycloadditions to form complex bicyclic structures and the advancement of these cycloadducts to the synthesis of densely functionalized tropolones. This work also describes applications of tropolones as biologically relevant structures and dynamic fluorophores.
In Chapter 1, we expand upon previous studies done in the Murelli Lab describing the ability of 3-hydroxy-4-pyrone derived oxidopyrylium dimers to revert back to ylides in situ and as result can be used as a clean oxidopyrylium ylide source in accessing oxabicyclic compounds. Intermolecular cycloadditions of these ylides can be …

Baghdad Science Journal
Synthesis of a new class of Schiff-base ligand with a tetrazole moiety to form polymeric metal complexes with CoII, NiII, ZnII, and CdII ions has been demonstrated. The ligand was synthesised by a multi-steps by treating 5-amino-2-chlorobenzonitrile and cyclohexane -1,3-dione, the 5,5'-(((1E,3E)-cyclohexane-1,3-diylidene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(2-chlorobenzonitrile) was obtained. The precursor (M) was prepared from the reaction 5,5'-(((1E,3E)-cyclohexane-1,3-diylidene)bis(azanylylidene))bis(2-chlorobenzonitrile) with NaN3 to obtained (1E,3E)-N1,N3-bis(4-chloro-3-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)cyclohexane-1,3-diimine (N). By reacting the precursor (M) with CS2/KOH, the required ligand was synthesised. Co (II), Ni (II), Zn (II), Cd (II) ions produce polymeric metal complexes with the formula [M(L)]n when they react with the ligand (L). These complexes were synthesised using …
Racial-Sexual Normativity In/As Narratives Of “The Human”, Jeri Brand
Racial-Sexual Normativity In/As Narratives Of “The Human”, Jeri Brand
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis synthesizes Sylvia Wynter’s and Judith Butler’s models of identity-formation to analyze discourses of racialization and sex/gender difference in normative scientific theories of “the human.” I argue that eugenicist white supremacism and sex/gender normativity form a single conceptual framework – what I call “the racial-sexual matrix” – throughout these scientific narratives. I then trace an epistemological consistency across 18th- through 21st-century scientific literature as evidence for the ongoing legacies of coloniality, white supremacy, and eugenics in current hegemonic sex/gender ontologies. Finally, I contend that the racial-sexual matrix functions as an index of proper humanness not …

The field of developmental biology has declined in prominence in recent decades, with off-shoots from the field becoming more fashionable and highly funded. This has created inequity in discovery and opportunity, partly due to the perception that the field is antiquated or not cutting edge. A 'think tank' of scientists from multiple developmental biology-related disciplines came together to define specific challenges in the field that may have inhibited innovation, and to provide tangible solutions to some of the issues facing developmental biology. The community suggestions include a call to the community to help 'rebrand' the field, alongside proposals for additional …

Biochemical Study Of Zamzam Water According To Cities Water, Amal Hamadah Ali Alhadithy
Al-Mustaqbal Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Sciences
Three samples of Zumzum water were collected from Mecca for 3 years (20011, 20012 & 20013 respectively). Chemical, physical & biological properties of these 3 samples were studied by reliable methods according to the city water (tap water) after 1, 2 and 3 years of storage. The physical study shows that no change in tastes, odor, color and pH of these 3 samples, also chemical study shows that there is slightly increase in calcium and magnesium ions more than the tap water which leads to understand why this water refreshes tired Hajjes. But more significantly, the water has no biological …

Arctic marine ecosystems are becoming more boreal due to climate change. Predictions of ecosystem change focus mainly on Arctic inflow or interior shelves, with few comprehensive studies on Arctic outflow regions. During September–October 2017, soft-bottom communities were sampled and benthic ecosystem processes were quantified at 12 stations on the Northeast Greenland shelf (outflow shelf) and compared to the last regional ecosystem study, conducted in 1992 and 1993. The benthic habitat was characterized in terms of sediment granulometry, pigment concentrations, and porewater chemistry (dissolved inorganic carbon, nutrients). Total abundance and biomass of macrobenthos and meiobenthos, bacterial abundance, porewater dissolved inorganic carbon …

BACKGROUND: Cardiac metabolic dysfunction is a hallmark of heart failure (HF). Estrogen-related receptors ERRα and ERRγ are essential regulators of cardiac metabolism. Therefore, activation of ERR could be a potential therapeutic intervention for HF. However, in vivo studies demonstrating the potential usefulness of ERR agonist for HF treatment are lacking, because compounds with pharmacokinetics appropriate for in vivo use have not been available.
METHODS: Using a structure-based design approach, we designed and synthesized 2 structurally distinct pan-ERR agonists, SLU-PP-332 and SLU-PP-915. We investigated the effect of ERR agonist on cardiac function in a pressure overload-induced HF model in vivo. We …

The design and development of new small-molecule glycation inhibitors are essential for preventing various chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, immunoinflammation, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. 4-Thiazolidinone or thiazolidine-4-one is a well-known heterocyclic compound with the potential to inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products. In the present work, we report the synthesis and characterization of four new 5-arylidene 3-cyclopropyl-2-(phenylimino)thiazolidin-4-one (1–4) compounds and their human serum albumin glycation inhibitory activity. One of the compounds 5-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-ylmethylidene)-3-cyclopropyl-2-(phenylimino)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one (3) showed potent inhibition in the synthesis of initial, intermediary, and final products of glycation reactions. Besides, conformational …

Positive Responses Of Solanum Lycopersicum Growth To Additions Of Gibberellin In The Presence Of Wounding Stress, Tatum Curtin
Positive Responses Of Solanum Lycopersicum Growth To Additions Of Gibberellin In The Presence Of Wounding Stress, Tatum Curtin
Undergraduate Scholarship
Herbivory is a consistent and prevalent stressor that threatens plants. Gibberellin, a naturally occurring plant growth hormone, has been known to increase plant growth when under a physical stress such as herbivory. To investigate, we set up a two-factorial design with 60 Solanum lycopersicum plants and subjected 15 plants each to four treatment groups: reference/control, 65 mg gibberellin, wounding, and 65 mg gibberellin+wounding. We found that S. lycopersicum root-to-shoot ratio decreases with the addition of gibberellin under mechanical wounding stress. Additionally, chlorophyll fluorescence increases under any mechanical wounding, with and without gibberellin present. Our experiment allows us to conclude that …

ABSTRACTDEVELOPMENT OF MICROFLUIDIC THERMAL GEL ELECTROPHORESIS FOR BIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS by MARIO AMBROCIO CORNEJO May 2024 Advisor: Dr. Thomas H. Linz Major: Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry) Degree: Doctor of Philosophy The molecular biology that takes place within cells is vital to the over function of an organism. Healthy cellular function is crucial to a wide web of interconnected processes that need to be balanced and regulated. When these processes become abnormal, disease states are developed. The mapping of biological networks has led to the development of gene therapy and more accurate diagnostic tests. However, there are still vital biomolecules that due to …
Evaluating Functional Inhibitors Of Acid Sphingomyelinase As Potential Negative Modulators Of Microvesicle Particle Release In Response To Skin Stressors, Taskin Sabit
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Many diseases including lupus erythematosus, atopic eczema, and rosacea can be associated with photosensitivity, which is an abnormal response to sunlight. Recent studies by our group have implicated microvesicle particles (MVP) as playing an important role in causing inflammation and systemic immunosuppression. Previous studies show that functional inhibitors of acid sphingomyelinase (FIASMA) can block MVP release in response to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation or Platelet-activating Factor (PAF) agonist, which are skin stressors. However, more research needs to be conducted to evaluate the role of PAF, UVB and FIASMA in MVP generation and to formulate a therapeutic medication to be potentially …
Design And Synthesis Of Aminoglycoside-Based Heparan Sulfate Mimetics For Structure-Activity Relationship Studies Of Heparan-Binding Proteins, Joseph Wakpal
Wayne State University Dissertations
Cancer remains a formidable challenge in modern medicine, demanding innovative approaches and treatments. Among the emerging strategies, inhibiting heparanase and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) has garnered considerable attention in recent years. This dissertation presents a novel approach to designing and synthesizing a diverse library of heparan sulfate (HS) mimetics derived from aminoglycosides to study their binding to two heparin-binding proteins involved in cancer development and metastasis. Heparanase cleaves HS polysaccharide chains in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is a regulator of aggressive tumor behavior. Clinical studies have illustrated that aberrant heparanase expression correlates with increased tumor size, amplified tumor …
