The Utilitarian Islamic Modernity Of Ḥasan Al-ʿAṭṭār (1766–1835), Ian Greer
The Utilitarian Islamic Modernity Of Ḥasan Al-ʿAṭṭār (1766–1835), Ian Greer
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I describe and analyze the manifestations of modern thought in the life and works of Ḥasan al-ʿAṭṭār (d. 1835), an Egyptian Islamic scholar who served as Shaykh al-Azhar in the 1830s, in concert with Muḥammad ʿAlī Pasha. These manifestations were significantly influenced by the writings and ideas of Ottoman ʿulamāʿ and political elites which al-ʿAṭṭār would have encountered during his 10-year journey across the Empire. The thesis will also explore the content of al-ʿAṭṭār’s political, legal and social thought, which was guided by a unique form of ‘Islamic utilitarianism’ which reaches across his writings and the reforms …
The Emancipation Of A Harem Girl: Resisting The Gendered Division Of Space In Wafa Faith Hallam’S The Road From Morocco, Rachid Lamghari
The Emancipation Of A Harem Girl: Resisting The Gendered Division Of Space In Wafa Faith Hallam’S The Road From Morocco, Rachid Lamghari
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines the challenging of Orientalist and Western discourses and of patriarchal authority over Eastern women in Wafa Faith Hallam’s memoir The Road from Morocco. The conventional representation of these women is revisited as Saadia in the memoir debunks the passivity and docility with which they are associated by exercising her agency and trespassing the sacred cultural and physical frontiers. Regardless of being introduced to confinement in the private space of a harem since her infancy, Saadia manages to liberate herself first through leaving the allegedly sacred frontiers of the house and trespassing in public space which is discursively …

Breaking Barriers: A Comprehensive Review Of Literature On Empowering Women With Disabilities, A. M. Al-Taii
Information Sciences Letters
I aim to investigate the current status of empowerment of women, particularly those with disabilities, using a literature review approach. I will achieve this using a purposive sampling method, searching databases such as JSTOR, Scopus, EBSCOhost, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar for relevant studies published between 1986 and 2022 using the search terms women with disabilities," "empowerment," and "empowering women in Iraq." The collected data will be analyzed thematically to identify and categorize patterns and themes related to empowering women with disabilities in Iraq after trauma. The analysis highlights the importance of empowering women with disabilities and the need …

The Uss Liberty Incident: Accident Or Intentional Attack, Maximus E. Marlowe
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
When I first heard the story of the USS Liberty I became extremely interested in learning more about the events that transpired and began reading about the incident in my free time. Thus, when I registered for Modern American Military History with Dr. Snead, I was already eager to research this topic.
While my primary fields of study are engulfed in the Colonial American period, I have had a strong interest in American military history since I was a child. This would especially be the case with the U.S. Navy as my father is a retired Naval officer and I …

The Last Colony: Theoretical Explanations On The Protractedness Of The Western Sahara Conflict, Elisabeth H. Austrheim
The Last Colony: Theoretical Explanations On The Protractedness Of The Western Sahara Conflict, Elisabeth H. Austrheim
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
“There has never been a protracted war from which a country has benefited” (Tzu 1963: 73).
The forty-eight yearlong Western Sahara conflict over the former Spanish colony between Polisario and the Kingdom of Morocco continues its low prospects of resolution. The future of the territory, with both strategic geopolitical and financial relevance, remains uncertain in which the reasons for the continued prolongation appear to be many. Different conflict theories emphasise various factors causing protractedness, suggesting that many different causes, together, have engendered the current lack of settlement. Whilst the theory of protracted social conflicts emphasises developed high-tensioned, hostile relations between …

Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (Peace By Upon Him) As Recognized By Western Scholars: An Analytical Study, Kareem Jihad Al-Hassani
NJF Islamic University Journal
The majority of the notable individuals from the early Islamic era who had a major impact on the development of Muslim history have been the subject of in-depth research and analysis by Western academics. Scholars, Orientalists, and others are aware of the significant effects these studies have had on the Islamic country over the centuries, both positive and negative. These researchers made advantage of the resources at their disposal to collect data, making sure that their conclusions were not restricted to societies, libraries, and museums. Rather, they translated, published, and categorised their work based on its development and place of …

The German Interpretation Of Imam Reza's, Peace Be Upon Him, Mandate Of The Covenant: "Conselman As A Model'', Haider Ali Hawal
NJF Islamic University Journal
The German school in Islamic history has been criticized for presenting a distorted view of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, particularly the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt. Gerhard Konselman's study, "The Shining Star of Shiites," examined the Safavid dynasty and the Islamic state in Iran, focusing on the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt. The research, "The German Reading of the Mandate of the Covenant of Imam Reza, Peace Be Upon Him: Konselman as a Model," aims to challenge this distorted view and provide a more credible understanding of the Imams.

"Who Are The Landlords Here?" - Group Rights In The Age Of Populism: Jewish Ownership Of Symbolic And Geographic Space In Israel, Meital Pinto
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The world is witnessing the rise offar-right political parties. In Israel's recent national legislative election, Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit), a far-right, anti-Arab political party, reached an unprecedented achievement. The party won six seats in the Knesset and its leader, Itamar Ben Gvir was appointed as the Minister of National Security. "Who are the Landlords Here?" was the party's election slogan; it signals that Jews should not only own the state but also its public space. This normative political statement aligns with the dominant attitude towards group rights for the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel. The dominant attitude perceives group rights in …
