Tasting God’S Light: Saints And The Spiritual Senses, Philip Abbott Jan 2024

Tasting God’S Light: Saints And The Spiritual Senses, Philip Abbott

BYU Studies

While many Westerners once assumed that sensory perception is more or less constant and universal, scholarship in the area of sensory studies has shown how volatile and diverse sensory discernment can be. For instance, though Western epistemology categorizes sensory knowledge into five senses, people across world cultures do not agree on the number of human senses that exist (some enumerate two, four, six, or seven senses), nor do they agree on how the senses function. As anthropologists have illuminated, these various notions of sensory perception lead people to translate sensory experience into vastly different worldviews. Thus, researchers have concluded that …

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski Jan 2024

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study aimed to investigate the bicultural identity integration between 1st and 2nd generation Bangladeshi in the UK and the relationship between various identity profiles with personal and family life satisfaction measures. In line with Boski’s (2021) theoretical framework, cultural identity has been conceptualized in a theoretical three steps model. First, cultures are described on a set of values, to establish their joint and mutually exclusive characteristics. Next participants express their personal preferences on the same set of values. Lastly, each cultural identity is operationalized as a sum of products of cultural descriptors (their weights) and personal preferences. This approach …

American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher Jan 2024

American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

The entrepreneurial spirit goes to the heart of the American Dream. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Put your nose to the grindstone. If you could just be given the tools to get started, you, too, can make something of yourself with hard work and perseverance. This mindset drives millions of people each year to participate in Multi-Level Marketing companies (MLMs), which are advertised as an opportunity to start your own business, sell products, and work on your own schedule. MLMs are also designed to reward sellers each time they successfully encourage another person to join, so much so that …

Evaluating The Effects Of Topographic Position On Soil Carbon Content In Prairie Pothole Agricultural Landscapes, Grace Uchytil Jan 2024

Evaluating The Effects Of Topographic Position On Soil Carbon Content In Prairie Pothole Agricultural Landscapes, Grace Uchytil

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Prairie potholes are depressional wetland features found throughout the northern Great Plains region of the United States and Canada. These wetlands have high potential to store large quantities of carbon, but many have been altered for conventional agricultural practices. Recently, conservation practices (e.g., no-till and cover crops) and federal conservation programs (e.g., Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)) are contributing to these landscapes returning to their more natural state. The restoration of prairie pothole soils has the potential to increase their carbon storage abilities, which would help decrease CO2 in the atmosphere and aid in mitigating climate change. The purpose of this …

Post-Glacial Landscape Evolution Of The Lower St. Croix River Valley: The Enigma Of Glacial Lake Grantsburg, The Osceola Bench, And The St. Croix Dells, Hunter Delikowski Jan 2024

Post-Glacial Landscape Evolution Of The Lower St. Croix River Valley: The Enigma Of Glacial Lake Grantsburg, The Osceola Bench, And The St. Croix Dells, Hunter Delikowski

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The St. Croix River valley (SCRV) is the product of dyssynchronous glacial advance and retreat of several glacial lobes during regional deglaciation of the Late Pleistocene-Early Holocene transition. Additionally, the SCRV has been dramatically shaped by multiple proglacial lake drainage episodes. Therefore, the SCRV is an important case study to understanding the impacts of proglacial lake spillover processes. However, the magnitude, frequency, timing, duration, and geomorphic impacts of these floods remain enigmatic. We focus on a specific reach of the SCRV, which we name the Lower SCRV for the purpose of this study. The lower SCRV contains several anomalous landforms …

Industrial Safety: How Complacency At Industrial Facilities Has Evolved As A Result Of Widespread Corporate Leadership Induced Reductions In Force Of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers, Christina Kniffin-Downs Jan 2024

Industrial Safety: How Complacency At Industrial Facilities Has Evolved As A Result Of Widespread Corporate Leadership Induced Reductions In Force Of Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers, Christina Kniffin-Downs

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

With the renewal of interest in nuclear energy as a green energy source, battery plant manufacturing for electric vehicles, and semiconductor fabrication plant construction, it is necessary to address the evolution of complacency as it relates to industrial facility leadership and the widespread reduction in force of essential critical infrastructure workers. As a skilled craft person in the piping trades, with almost two decades of experience in mechanical construction, ten of those years as a nuclear worker, and as a traveling pipefitter working at chemical, refinery, and gasification plants, I am intimately aware of the behaviors, practices, and procedures inherent …

Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo Jan 2024

Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo

Faculty Publications

Today, Fascism is on the rise around the world including, dismayingly, in the United States of America, threatening the rule of law, which is the basis of democracy. In the U. S. Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, has declared himself the standard bearer for authoritarian rule. If he wins, it is likely the United States will cease to be a democracy. If democracy is to survive, it is essential that citizens understand fascism, how it comes into existence, and what it does once it has taken root is essential. That is the reason for this reading list.

Mixed Messages: Reflections On Multiethnic Identity And Narratives In Youth Ministry Pedagogy, Joel Mayward Jan 2024

Mixed Messages: Reflections On Multiethnic Identity And Narratives In Youth Ministry Pedagogy, Joel Mayward

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Drawing upon the work of Gloria E. Anzaldúa and Paul Ricoeur, this article presents a personal and scholarly reflection on the author’s multiethnic identity and how such identities may benefit youth ministry pedagogies and perspectives. The author explains Anzaldúa’s notion of nepantla alongside Ricoeur’s concepts of “narrative identity” and “social imaginary,” then demonstrates how these two thinkers’ perspectives can be interwoven and applied by educators and youth ministry practitioners. Ultimately, in sharing about his “mixed” heritage, the author contends that multiethnic individuals can serve as bridge-builders between cultures and generations.

Navigating Boundaries: Challenges And Strategies In Exhibiting Brazilian Art Globally, Bruna Ribeiro Schnor

MA Theses

This thesis critically evaluates key initiatives in New York from 2002 to 2023, notably "Brazil: Body and Soul" and "Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing Modern Art in Brazil" at institutions like the Guggenheim and MoMA, highlighting potential shortcomings in representing Brazilian culture accurately. Additionally, it discusses exhibitions like "Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca: Five Times Brazil" at the New Museum and “The Yanomami Struggle” at The Shed for their unique approaches to showcasing Brazilian art. The methodology involves analyzing significant exhibitions in New York from 2000 to 2023, evaluating their efforts to globalize Brazilian art, and understanding their global impact. …

Art And Entertainment Collaboration: The Benefits And Challenges Of Auction Houses Crossover Collaborations In The Global Art Market, Yushi Chen

MA Theses

Over the past decades, crossover collaboration has become increasingly important
in the contemporary art market as an effective strategy to reach a wholly new customer segment. This research focuses on the crossover collaboration between art and entertainment by exploring the partnerships between auction houses and singers. It uses a case study as a research methodology to analyze Sotheby’s partnerships with three famous singers, including Nigo, T.O.P., and Jay Chou, by which the auction house successfully entered the Asian art market. The research found that these examples have demonstrated Sotheby’s how has integrated crossover collaboration into its sustainable competitive advantages. The …

Warhol Uncovered: From Byzantium To Pop, Kassandra Ibrahim Jan 2024

Warhol Uncovered: From Byzantium To Pop, Kassandra Ibrahim

MA Theses

Despite being one of the most extensively researched artists of the twentieth century, Andy Warhol’s identity as a Carpatho-Rusyn Byzantine Catholic is often omitted by a majority of sources. Inspired by the 2020-2021 exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelation, this thesis examines the aesthetic influence that the artist’s religious upbringing had on his oeuvre. By examining Eastern Christian icons and church interiors, I define key characteristics of the Byzantine aesthetic — gold grounds, stylized frontal figures, flattening of depth, seriality, excessive decoration, etc. — and identify its usage in Warhol’s Pop Art. I also explore the Carpatho-Ruysn folk art tradition of pysanky …

Formed By Fire: A Global Story Of Women And Clay, Denise Tepe Jan 2024

Formed By Fire: A Global Story Of Women And Clay, Denise Tepe

MA Projects

In 1971, art historian Linda Nochlin implored the art world to be introspective of its long-held, male-centered narratives when she published the profound essay ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ Nochlin articulated the individual and societal factors that have disadvantaged women collectively and have historically kept them from receiving the same level of recognition as male artists for the same quality of work. This essay, compounded with growing feminist sentiments of the late 20th century, insighted art world institutions to highlight and recontextualize the art of women. These institutional efforts have culminated in female artists having a renaissance …

Language, Hip Hop, And Identity Work On Youtube, Matt Garley, Cecelia Cutler

Publications and Research

As hip hop has evolved into the dominant form of global popular music, YouTube has become a locus of fan-artist interaction. This chapter examines how hip hop artists and fans produce their identities and engage with hip hop culture on YouTube. This identity work centers around establishing credibility, glocal and ethnic positioning, and signaling stances of resistance and simultaneous alignment with ultralocal and global hip hop personae. Building on a background of research about language and identity in hip hop, particularly in the Internet sphere, the chapter summarizes the state of the art and then highlights the authors’ own explorations …

Territoriality Of Satellites In The Leo: ‘Jurisdiction Without Territory’ Beyond Earthly Frontiers, Priyansh Dixit Jan 2024

Territoriality Of Satellites In The Leo: ‘Jurisdiction Without Territory’ Beyond Earthly Frontiers, Priyansh Dixit

National Law School of India Review

Successes in outer space are often seen as belonging to humankind. But what exactly does humankind mean? In line with TWAIL, I cannot agree that it refers to the collective distribution of benefits to all states or individuals. Rather, these successes and the benefits that flow from them are disproportionately allocated to the first world. This is even though the advantage of the first world is a direct consequence of centuries of colonialism and exploitation. In this backdrop, I argue that the exercise of jurisdiction in the Low Earth Orbit (‘LEO’) creates a kind of territoriality that is used to …

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder Jan 2024

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This chapter is about developing a biblically informed, theologically sound perspective on what it means to be human in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be omnipresent and nearly omnipotent. Along the way, we will consider the history of AI, the current state of AI, and a biblical view of AI. However, to land in a place where we have some solid understanding of a biblically informed perspective on the role of technology, we need to begin with our own imaginations.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease And The Components Of Metabolic Syndrome By Race/Ethnicity: Spotlight On Mexican Americans, Roy Valenzuela

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is one of the most common forms of liver disease in the United States, which occurs when a buildup of fat droplets within the hepatocytes accounts for 5% of the liver’s total weight.

Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study evaluated the relationship between suspected NAFLD and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and the individual components of MetS among five major racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Furthermore, this study compared the prevalence of NAFLD, MetS, and the components of MetS in four minority U.S. populations with that of non-Hispanic Whites. Data from four …

Sure Imagination: Distinguishing Mnemotechnics From Spatial Mnemonics, Ian Goodrich Jan 2024

Sure Imagination: Distinguishing Mnemotechnics From Spatial Mnemonics, Ian Goodrich

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The term “mnemotechnics” has been misinterpreted by scholars due to a lack of a clear and concise definition available for reference. Though there are contemporary scholarship references to mnemotechnics, these references avoid a definition and are often in a context that does not consider how ancient rhetoricians utilized the practice. Without a concise and unified definition, the term mnemotechnics takes on a variety of divergent meanings through different scholarship, preventing a similarity in terms to ideas and obscuring the practice of the rhetoricians who utilized mnemotechnics. In this thesis, the writings of Quintilian, Augustine of Hippo, and the anonymous author …
