Get Out: Animal Imagery And The Derogatory Representation Of Black Men, Adryth Salzman
Get Out: Animal Imagery And The Derogatory Representation Of Black Men, Adryth Salzman
Undergraduate Review
Get Out, an American anti-racist horror film directed by Jordan Peele, follows a chilling story through the perspective of the main character, a black man named Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya). Chris is brought by his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) to spend the weekend at her family’s house with the rest of her white family. He is put in various situations where he is subjected to racist remarks and microaggressions that escalate throughout his stay. As the film continues, Chris learns that the Armitages are partaking in modern-day slave trade by controlling black bodies through hypnosis and the implantation …
Technical Temporalities Of The Transitional Protest Movements, Talha C. Issevenler
Technical Temporalities Of The Transitional Protest Movements, Talha C. Issevenler
Publications and Research
The concept of political time is unpacked through an analysis of the interactive, technologically mediated field between the state and social movements. The activities of protest movements are set in dialogue with state reason in order to theorize the temporality of political rationality as entangled with political affects (i.e., attachments to past political ideals and unmetabolized/unsymbolized technological propensities).
Strands Of Repair: Textile Treasures As Sustainable Pathways To Reconnect With The Lost Past, Sareekah Agarwaal, Ruby Kashyap Sood
Strands Of Repair: Textile Treasures As Sustainable Pathways To Reconnect With The Lost Past, Sareekah Agarwaal, Ruby Kashyap Sood
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Textiles, fundamental to all human experiences, are meaning-laden objects that possess a remarkable ability to evoke emotions and memories, serving as powerful mnemonic devices.
Almost everyone experiences unplanned encounters with textiles in their lifetime and in different contexts. Hence, most every piece is loaded with personal, cultural, or historical data, fostering a deep emotional connection between the owner and the object. Consequently, these textiles are cared for, preserved, and often repurposed. But not much literature exists on how textiles and their stories can be used to augment the understanding of the identity of an individual, a group, a region, or …
Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett
Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Inhabiting Numbers: Polyphony as Woven Sound explores connections between vocal polyphony and textile practices, specifically weaving and spinning. Rather than consider music and weaving as separate from one another, the following paper presents the ways in which they are deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive forms of cultural expression. The technical modes of thinking produced through repetition inherent in both—particularly as practices utilizing complex mathematical structures—produce ways of thinking unique to each. Through practice, I suggest these technical modes of making transit across different materials and mediums—in both explicit and implicit ways. The music created through the interweaving of multiple voices …

Chiapas Maya Project - Weaving Community, Lori Benson, Helena Rojas Lopez
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The Chiapas Maya Project (CMP), https://chiapasmayaproject.org/, was conceived in 2018 to create a virtual archive of the material culture of the Highland Maya of Chiapas, Mexico. The archive includes objects, images, recordings, and written records documenting a rapidly changing culture. Over time, it has become a more comprehensive project, connecting museum collections, weaving cooperatives, collectives, weavers, artists, intellectual property specialists, and academics. The partners and friends involved with the project focus on conversing and documenting - digitizing collections, if they have them.
What is the most critical information that should be searchable? How do the communities want to access …
Incursive Heritage: Socio-Digital Mediations Of Mediterranean, Maria Ida De Ioanni
Incursive Heritage: Socio-Digital Mediations Of Mediterranean, Maria Ida De Ioanni
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Drawing upon the ongoing research endeavors within my doctoral program, this paper articulates a dual objective. Firstly, it undertakes the recognition and systematic delineation of collaborative repositories hosted on social media platforms, which serve to revitalize and perpetuate textile traditions through the curation of oral histories and diverse forms of visiotextual materials. The focal point of this inquiry encompasses social media accounts that reconfigure and contest prevailing heritage narratives by foregrounding hitherto marginalized personal and communal accounts surrounding textiles and fabrics. Functioning as dynamic digital repositories, these accounts subvert conventional heritage discourses by not only archiving and structuring knowledge but …

La Representación De Los Seres Voladores En Tejidos Ceremoniales Tiwanaku, Elisa Cont
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022

Knot Anomalies On Inka Khipus: Revising Locke’S Knot Typology, Sabine Hyland
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
In 2007, in the IV Actas de las Jornadas Internacionales sobre Textiles Precolombinos, Kylie Quave noted the existence of various structural anomalies in khipus presumed to date to the Late Horizon. These anomalies included the use of non-cotton vegetal fibres, the inclusion of single red strings, subsidiary cords that are plied through rather than half hitched, and the placement of long knots and figure-8 knots “in a way that precludes a numerical reading”. Since Quave’s article, there has been little examination of such anomalies, nor have scholars known whether such anomalies were to be found in khipus that had …

Fostering Student Connection To The Library: Personal Librarians And First-Year Experience, Loren Mixon, Tracy Conner
Library Faculty Publications
The personal librarian program was embedded into the First Year Student Success classes at Kankakee Community College to ensure freshman instruction in resources and supports available within the library while focusing on creating campus community connections with librarians. As a part of this collaboration, new library curriculum was created to involve students in the library using a variety of different modalities. Students completed an asynchronous assignment connecting typical syllabus elements to library services that may help, a class tour with basic book searching activity, and then a one-on-one meeting with their personal librarian who walked them through database research basics …
Automated Mapping Of !Nara In Namibia’S Ephemeral River Corridors, Luc Cote, Elise Donovan, Dylan Lawler, Mara Mccollor, Kendall Weingart
Automated Mapping Of !Nara In Namibia’S Ephemeral River Corridors, Luc Cote, Elise Donovan, Dylan Lawler, Mara Mccollor, Kendall Weingart
ENGS 89/90 Reports
In this project we develop a user-friendly remote sensing program which, given satellite data, accurately returns locations of !nara melons—a keystone plant species local to the Namib Desert of Namibia. To do so, we utilize pre-existing image segmentation techniques in addition to employing a satellite frequency band-based classification approach on each image segment. This tool can be used to provide important information about how !nara distribution is changing temporally and spatially, an indicator for changes in the hydro-climate of the Namib Desert, thus extending researchers’ ability to track and understand climate change in this remote region in an affordable and …

An Investigation Of Toddler Risky Play Informed By The Voices Of Parents And Teachers Of Toddlers In One School Setting, Megan Kybartas, Mary Jane Moran, Tyler J. Kybartas
Graduate Research - College of Education
This qualitative study explored the perceptions of teachers and parents within the context of toddlerhood risky play at a university laboratory school. Sociocultural and bioecological theories informed the study and the developmental niche framework guided the data analysis. Video-stimulated recall interviews were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Findings include: (1) parents’ and teachers’ perceptions of risky play are comprised of (a) their psychology as the caregiver, (b)knowing the child, and (c) cultural influences, (2) parent and teacher descriptions of risky play include that it happens outdoors, away from adults, and encompasses developmental benefits, and (3) the development of perceptions …
Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero
Negated Identities In Dominican Art Education, Felix V. Rodriguez Suero
Faculty Publications – Art
Drawing from decolonial theories, I explore the history of art education in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 20th century. I examine how racial hierarchies were activated in art classes in school through the romanticization of the countryside and the mystification of children’s material culture. A distorted use of rural imagery served to advance the elite’s narrative of White Dominican identity and to normalize a racial imaginary that negated the country’s African heritage. I analyze how national and global discourses that coupled modernity with Whiteness encouraged aesthetic preferences that permeated children’s visual culture and national art. I …

The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento
The Influence Of Religion In Frantz Fanon’S Decolonial Theory And Ethics On Violence, Dorival Pimenta Do Nascimento
CGU Theses & Dissertations
How does religious language influence Frantz Fanon’s Decolonial theory and ethics onviolence in the struggle for decolonization and disalienation? This is the question I address in this dissertation carefully observing Patrick Crowley's mention of the presence of religious language in Fanon's work. Crowley’s argument is that Fanon’s thought is apocalyptical in structure and is marked by a dramatic sense of temporality prior to his arrival in Algeria. Crowley develops his article focusing on the messianic question, while the religious language in Fanon's work he ends up relegating to a second plan. In this sense, this dissertation is developed with the …

‘The More Empowered I Feel, The More Vulnerable I Become’: Exploring The Entanglements Of Human Rights Education (Hre), Legal Discourses And Notions Of Agency And Vulnerability Amongst Human Rights Educators In Colombia, Claudia Blandon
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
In the 21st century, notions of human rights are symbols of dignity, freedom, and equality (UNDHR, 1948) and equated with notions of empowerment. Simultaneously, in an epoch of recurrent waves of displacement, international instruments of protection are failing to safeguard displaced people and those who provide sanctuary. By the end of 2022, 104 million people had been forcibly displaced globally because of conflict and human rights violations (UNHCR, 2023). Against this global backdrop, empowering women through human rights education and legal discourses has become a priority, (Bajaj et al., 2017, Altinova et al., 2019). With a firm conviction that the …
