Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher
Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Deliverance is clearly the major theme of the memorable Exodus story, but the Exodus is not the only Old Testament account that teaches profound lessons about God’s redemption. The story of Rahab—the woman of Jericho—is situated in relation to the Exodus through shared images and narrative elements to highlight additional insights about God’s power to save. Specifically, the Rahab story shows that God continues in the temporal, collective delivery of his covenant people even after Egypt. God is also interested in both the temporal and spiritual deliverance of individuals, as shown in the life of Rahab herself. Finally, the story …

Dog burials are known from Egypt from the Predynastic period from c. 3500 BC onward and continue into the Roman era. Different burials have been interpreted in a variety of ways: companion/pet/working animals, associated with divinities, and as guardians. This paper presents a unique interment of a single human and a group of dogs found in the cemetery of Deir el-Banat in the Fayum (Egypt), which can be interpreted as either a religio-magical protective deposit for the cemetery, or a religio-medical one, involving the sacrifice of several animals.

Empowering Artisans: The Economic And Social Impact Of All Across Africa On Women’S Livelihoods In East Africa, Clara Gallagher, Delaney Mcmillan
Miller Center Fellowship
This study evaluates the impact of All Across Africa (AAA), a social enterprise dedicated to reducing poverty and creating employment opportunities for women artisans in East Africa by producing handcrafted baskets. We gathered data from 68 artisan women in Rwanda, focusing on three core areas: earnings, extended impacts on family and community, and the broader implications of economic empowerment. The analysis reveals a significant increase in the monthly income of artisans since they joined AAA. These earnings have enabled women to improve their quality of life, support their families through better access to food, education, and healthcare, and contribute economically …

Water And Empowerment: Developing A Vetting Profile For Jibu’S Future Franchisees In Rwanda, Julia Von Gersdorff, Yael Grimaldi
Miller Center Fellowship
This research uncovers underlying characteristics of successful clean water franchisees within the current Jibu network in Rwanda and provides a basis for the future Jibu franchisee application process. The study spanned four weeks and was conducted on site in Kigali, Rwanda. A comprehensive primary data set was compiled, including both qualitative and quantitative captures, through 40 interviews (20 franchisees and 20 staff from franchise organizations) and by collecting ethnographic field notes during the franchise visits. Through subsequent analysis, the study was able to identify characteristics that portend a successful franchisee: Commitment to Jibu’s Mission and Community; Organizational and Educational …
Existential Advocacy: Lawyering For Ai Safety And The Future Of Humanity, John Bliss
Existential Advocacy: Lawyering For Ai Safety And The Future Of Humanity, John Bliss
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Lawyers have played a central role in a wide range of social movements aiming to provide legal voice to marginalized communities. How might this tradition of social-change lawyering apply to the protection of future generations— a population that cannot advocate for themselves? This is a pressing question in the movement to mitigate “existential risk,” which refers to events that would foreclose a meaningful existence for future generations either through human extinction or irreversible trajectories of human suffering. Over the past two decades, an Oxford-based academic community has been researching existential threats that could arise from emerging technology, such as advanced …
Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley
Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
That Dermestes maculatus feeding can leave marks on bones is established in the literature - that D. maculatus routinely mark bones is not. Our results here, exposing fleshed bones to D. maculatus adults and immatures for almost two months after complete tissue removal, indicate that under natural conditions D. maculatus do not feed on bones. The key issue seems to be the ability of D. maculatus to seek new food sources versus being confined (and eventually starving) on bones. In a natural setting, once a food supply is exhausted, D. maculatus would seek new food …
Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa
Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa
CGU Theses & Dissertations
From 1964 to 1976, the United States military deployed troops to Thailand as part of its strategic operations during the Vietnam War. Most of these military personnel were stationed in Isan, a northeastern region of Thailand, due to its proximity to key bombing targets in Indochina. Historically, Isan was affiliated with Laos and was assimilated into Thai governance in the late eighteenth century. Until the 1950s, most of Isan’s population resided in rural, agricultural communities and were politically, economically, and culturally marginalized by mainstream Thai society. The Thai state’s internal colonization exacerbated socioeconomic disparities for Isan peasants, severely restricting avenues …

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education
My lesson, titled Under the Influence: The Dark Psychology Behind the Power of Social Conformity and Obedience intends to inform my students about the darker aspects of social psychology and the deeper, unconscious social influences that can lead good people to do terrible things in moments of conformity, obedience and group think. This course will cover professional laboratory experiments, real life historical examples, and psychological methods and tactics to give a broad range of information regarding this aspect of social psychology. With this information, the students will then have enough material to engage in group discussions regarding the deeper themes …

Continuities And Transformations: The Tiwanaku Component Of The Site Of In Copacabana, Bolivia, Stanislava R. Chavez
Wayne State University Dissertations
The site of Cundisa in Copacabana (Copacabana Peninsula, Bolivia) was occupied almost continuously for the past 2,500 years. The oldest occupation includes a Yaya-Mama religious tradition semi-subterranean temple with some associated burials. Later, the whole site, including the interior of the Yaya-Mama temple, was used as a Tiwanaku cemetery. Subsequently, the Incas reused the site, as they incorporated Copacabana into their empire as a major pilgrimage site. After the Spanish conquest the site continued to be occupied, including an oven where glazed tiles for the Copacabana Basilica were fired. This dissertation focuses on the Tiwanaku component of this complex site. …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
The Tatana is one of the indigenous groups of the Malaysian state of Sabah. Their language is said to be related to the Murutic family, with some influences from the neighboring Bisaya, who speak a Dusunic language. They are the largest ethnic group residing in Kuala Penyu, on the southwestern peninsula of Sabah. One of the unique features of the Tatana culture is its beautiful traditional costumes, called the sira lambung for females, and the sira dambia for males. The traditional costume is commonly worn during significant occasions, such as the harvest festival, Tatana annual Odou Bakanjar events, and wedding …

Moche-Wari Textiles From Huaca Del Sol, Moche Influence In The Middle Horizon, Amy Oakland
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
This paper analyzes a selection of textiles excavated in 2013 in the destroyed late Middle Horizon (AD 800-1000) cemetery on Huaca del Sol, Huacas de Moche in the Moche Valley of northern Peru. The Huaca Sol textile group was woven with local, Moche style S-spun cotton yarns between AD 888-1050, calibrated radiocarbon dates along with a small number of Wari textiles, late Moche and Wari ceramics and ceramics in Casma and Cajamarca styles. Textile structure and design provide the basis for reconstruction into complete garment types known to other Middle Horizon collections on the central and southern coast where Moche …

IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
This work aims to contribute to our current understanding of how information was organized in khipus, Andean colourful knotted cords used as writing. If the idea that khipu signs could work as a flow chart was common in the last two decades, it is not until the notion of kayte as subject marker was elaborated by Sabine Hyland on the basis of Julio C. Tello's notes that the theory could be discussed on more empirical grounds. So far, the term “kayte” applied to needlework bundles, pompons or tufts attached to the beginning of the primary cord. In this work, the …
Behind The Scenes In Museum Collecting: The Destinies Of Henry Wellcome’S Pre-Hispanic Textiles, Penelope Dransart
Behind The Scenes In Museum Collecting: The Destinies Of Henry Wellcome’S Pre-Hispanic Textiles, Penelope Dransart
IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
In this article, I explore the sale of pre-Hispanic textiles from Andean countries, especially Peru, demonstrating networks between collectors, auction houses and researchers. Sir Henry S. Wellcome (1856-1936) was a North American pharmaceutical entrepreneur. After transferring his commercial interests to London in 1880, he bought textiles and other antiquities at auctions. I outline the activities of Wellcome staff in registering the textiles in Wellcome’s store at Willesden, London. Textiles which preserve Wellcome labels now in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, and the National Museums of Liverpool are described. I examine the case of a distinctive Wari …

In this paper we present the strategies adopted to conserve a Chuquibamba textile circulating in the antique market. The piece had been reconstructed randomly to give it an “intact” appearance and facilitate its sale. The American West, 1899–1936: Prose, Poetry & Drama, Harriet Monroe, Michael R. Hill, Lindsay Atnip
Zea E-Books Collection
This comprehensive volume presents Harriet Monroe’s (1860–1936) previously unexplored love affair with the American West, an infatuation that blossomed in three interrelated genres: prose, poetry, and drama. Known internationally as the founder and influential editor of Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, here Monroe is revealed as a prolific author with a passion for the people, scenery, and environments she encountered during western escapes from her constricted urban life in Chicago. Monroe’s western travels were transformative. Originally schooled in the literary and artistic traditions of Europe, Monroe became increasingly convinced of the fundamental importance of the American West as the …

Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia
The production of textiles, in terms of weaving techniques, has a long history in Europe, and dates back to the Stone Age, the time during which the first farming communities arrived in the Mediterranean and Central Europe, in the 7th/6th millennium BC. The first evidence of textile tools, like spindle whorls and loom weights, demonstrate that people made an important step forward in mechanizing this craft, not only twisting fibers and interlacing strands purely by hand, but also inventing tools to increase efficiency. Through the development of textile techniques, we see the unleashing of enormous creative power that stimulated even …

Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia
Textiles as man-made products have been exchanged over distances for millennia. They can and have been produced almost anywhere; they are also, as a product, highly differentiated and quickly adjustable to changing demands. This brings with it naming practices to communicate about the goods in question. Textiles are labeled so that people can form expectations about them and rely on the reputation tied to the product’s identity. The terminology of textiles and textile items arises and develops in unison with technical innovations, discoveries, fashions, and trade patterns. Although the occurrence of toponyms e.g., in preindustrial trade (10th to 18th century …

The Terminology Of Soft Furnishings In Ancient Babylonia, Greece, And Rome: A Comparative Approach, Dimitra Andrianou, Elena Miramontes, Louise Quillien
Textile Crossroads: Exploring European Clothing, Identity, and Culture across Millennia
Various kinds of textiles were used to furnish domestic spaces in Antiquity, such as curtains, covers, hangings, pillows, cushions, mattresses, rugs, tapestries, tablecloths, and towels. These objects have practical and everyday functions, they embellish and add to daily comfort in the house and speak to the owner’s prosperity. Being made of perishable materials, furnishings have, on the whole, not survived in ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome. Apart from a few excavated pieces of textiles found in tombs, our information comes primarily from written testimonia and iconography.
It is thus essential to consider soft furnishings in their own right, in order …
