Corporate Social Responsibility Programs In Supply Chain Strategies, Craig A. Standridge Aug 2024

Corporate Social Responsibility Programs In Supply Chain Strategies, Craig A. Standridge

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study focused on United States-based small and medium-sized (SME) manufacturing companies and their decision-making strategies regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs within their supply chain strategies. As CSR gains global acceptance, those stakeholder interests seek validation and compete for outcomes that affect the triple bottom line of people, the planet, and profits. Strategic managers must skillfully balance the implementation of CSR programs with available resources, all without a guaranteed increase in competitiveness or organizational excellence. CSR is often perceived as more suitable for larger organizations with ample resources. At the same time, SMEs grapple with the fiduciary challenges of …

The Impact Of Colonization, The Problem Of Evil, And The African Traditional Religion Worldview On Biblical Hermeneutics In West Africa, Christopher Blay

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research paper delves into the complex relationship between colonization, African Traditional Religion (ATR), the problem of evil, and their impact on interpreting biblical texts in West Africa. The study explores how historical colonization, cultural beliefs rooted in ATR, and the existential question of evil have shaped the lens through which Millennials and Gen Z in West Africa engage with Christianity.

Through an analysis of historical sources, scholarly works, and academic articles, this paper highlights how these factors have contributed to a decline in interest in Christianity among the youth in the region. The paper also emphasizes the importance of …

Cultural Influence On Recruiting Middle School Children To The Jordanian Nai Choir, Diana Samir Talhami

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Social practices influenced the recruitment of middle school children to the Nai choir despite the rich Jordanian culture. This research addressed beliefs, cultural dynamics, social values, and strategies to identify a critical gap in the literature regarding the recruitment of middle school students to the Nai choir. To understand students’ enrollment challenges, the researcher examined community perspectives related to the Jordanian culture, socioeconomic status, communication between students and community, beliefs, and values. Furthermore, exploring the age perspectives of middle school students was essential. The culture of these students also influenced their decision and motivation to join the choir. This study …

Incorporating Aaron Copland's Philosophy Of Inclusion In Midwest Rural Band Programs: A Qualitative Study Of Attracting And Retaining Students Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Jonathan, S. Laflamme

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The field of music education has established the value of instrumental band music instruction as congruent with students’ intellectual, kinesthetic, psychological, and academic success. However, one should scrutinize the validity of the above data, as it addresses issues concerning access to instrumental music education that persist within underserved populations, particularly those characterized by low socioeconomic status (SES) in rural Midwest America. Researchers have synthesized very little data specifically to address the needs of Midwest rural schools and underserved student populations. This qualitative study explores the effects of applying Aaron Copland’s philosophy of inclusion, specifically regarding students of low SES, in …

Lastly, (5) what are some compelling visions for how the …

Walking Billboards: The Copyright Landscape Of Tattoos In Professional Athletics, Taylor Ingram Aug 2024

Walking Billboards: The Copyright Landscape Of Tattoos In Professional Athletics, Taylor Ingram

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Though tattoos have traditionally been viewed negatively, in the last decade, tattoos have become a popular form of self-expression. Thus, the increasing prevalence of athletes adorned with body art has sparked legal debate on tattoo ownership, protection, and commercialization. This Note briefly outlines tattooing and copyright law histories and provides an overview of copyright law today. As copyright claims by tattoo artists have, until recently, been widely settled out of court, this Note will provide an analysis of the only case to proceed to a jury trial. Based on the above, this Note asserts that tattoos are copyrightable. It further …

Teacher Candidates’ Engagement In Practitioner Inquiry Within An Equity-Centered Initial Teacher Preparation Program: Illuminating Equity’S Presence And Pitfalls, Lauren Weisberg, Blake Beckett, Nancy Fichtman Dana, Michelle Commeret, Rachel Silva

Journal of Practitioner Research

Growing numbers of initial teacher preparation programs are incorporating practitioner inquiry into clinical field experiences due to its proven capacity to empower educators and learners. To uphold practitioner inquiry’s tradition of interrogating the current culture of pedagogy, scholars advocate for an equity-centered approach to inquiry in these programs. We investigated the efficacy of such an approach by exploring how equity manifested, and was threatened, in teacher candidates' inquiries in an equity-centered program rooted in the cross-pollination of Universal Design for Learning and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Our findings indicate that while equity-centered teacher preparation programs have potential in nurturing teacher candidates’ …

The Virtual Landscape Of German Language Learning And Teaching In Social Media, Akra Chowchong

Journal of Letters

This paper aims to study the linguistic landscape in the virtual domain of online language instruction. It analyzes the various semiotic forms used by language teaching Facebook pages in their materials and advertisements. The corpus of the study consists of 10 Thai Facebook pages that teach German as a foreign language. The analysis includes 36 profile pictures, 59 cover photos and a total of 1,879 posts. The findings indicate that the majority of these pages predominantly use semiotic elements that index Germany when teaching or discussing German, despite the fact that German is also an official language in Austria and …

Constructive Engagement Between Ecological Thoughts Of Karl Marx And Lao Zi, Hongyin Zhou, Yuqi Chen Aug 2024

Constructive Engagement Between Ecological Thoughts Of Karl Marx And Lao Zi, Hongyin Zhou, Yuqi Chen

Comparative Philosophy

The global ecological crisis has posed unprecedented survival challenges to human being. Consequently, ecological issues have naturally become central concerns in philosophy. From the methodological perspective of constructive engagement in comparative philosophy, we have chosen to compare the ecological thoughts of two thinkers—Karl Marx and Lao Zi (老子)—who are separated by vast spans of time and cultural tradition. We argue that Karl Marx holds a mild anthropocentric ecological view, while Lao Zi holds a transcendental ecological view. In addressing ecological issues, Lao Zi’s transcendental methodological guiding principles can provide negative methodological constraints for Karl …

Confucianism Embodied: An “Interdisciplinary” Approach To Comparative Political Theory, Qi Jing Aug 2024

Confucianism Embodied: An “Interdisciplinary” Approach To Comparative Political Theory, Qi Jing

Comparative Philosophy

This article articulates and defends an “interdisciplinary” approach to Confucian political theory and presents Confucianism as a living, dynamic entity rather than merely a reservoir of ideas contained within a set of texts. It argues for a methodology that transcends traditional textual analysis, advocating for an intersectional approach that melds normative, emancipatory, and practical dimensions. This approach seeks to capture the evolving essence of Confucianism as influenced by cultural, institutional, and individual interactions. It also promotes a “distant reading” to examine not only texts and historical debates but also institutional changes, power dynamics, and guiding principles within Confucianized societies. The …

Faculty Research 2024

The ability of morphine to decrease cysteine transport into neurons by inhibition of excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAA3) may be a key molecular mechanism underlying the acquisition of physical and psychological dependence to morphine. This study examined whether co-administration of the cell- penetrant antioxidant D-thiol ester, D-cysteine ethyl ester (D-CYSee), with morphine, would diminish the development of physical dependence to morphine in male Sprague Dawley rats. Systemic administration of the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone (NLX), elicited pronounced withdrawal signs (e.g., wet-dog shakes, jumps, rears, circling) in rats that received a subcutaneous depot of morphine (150 mg/kg, SC) for 36 …

Paleo Environment And Archaeology Provide Cautionary Tales For Climate Policymakers, Brett Kaufman, Christopher S. Kelly, Richard S. Vachula Aug 2024

Paleo Environment And Archaeology Provide Cautionary Tales For Climate Policymakers, Brett Kaufman, Christopher S. Kelly, Richard S. Vachula

The Geographical Bulletin

Federal climate policy in the United States is still in its infancy and is in large part characterized by efforts to reach a consensus on the very existence and causality of climate change. This has stemmed from a sociopolitical rift within the country, with the objectivity and usefulness of science attacked by detractors. Scientists who are most qualified to defend their methods and provide information to policymakers rarely have an institutional incentive to share this knowledge, but should be encouraged to communicate their findings to the public, especially those who receive public funding. By not doing so, they are effectively …

Blurring The Protagonist/ Antagonist Binary Through A Geopolitics Of Peace: Star Trek’S Cardassians, Antagonists Of The Alpha Quadrant, Hannah C. Gunderman Aug 2024

Blurring The Protagonist/ Antagonist Binary Through A Geopolitics Of Peace: Star Trek’S Cardassians, Antagonists Of The Alpha Quadrant, Hannah C. Gunderman

The Geographical Bulletin

The plotlines of many science fiction television programs and films establish the identities of the protagonists and antagonists at an early stage of the viewing experience . T hese boundaries serve to position the viewer on a particular side of the story, rendering it difficult to fully consider the Other’s actions and motivations . It is in this manner that media influences our perceptions of place and social dynamics through a formation of popular geopolitics . In this paper, I present the Cardassians, an extraterrestrial species in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as a …

Star Trek And The Anthropological Machine: Eliding Difference To Stay Human, Jacob Barber Aug 2024

Star Trek And The Anthropological Machine: Eliding Difference To Stay Human, Jacob Barber

The Geographical Bulletin

This article considers the work of Giorgio Agamben’s ‘Anthropological Machine’ (2004) in the depiction of human-nonhuman interactions in Star Trek . While Star Trek aims to present a utopian vision of the future, a contradictory reading is equally plausible . Instead of embracing novel encounters with nonhuman life and technology, Star Trek retreats into an idealized vision of the human . Encounters with the nonhuman become vehicles through which to reinforce this vision of a bounded and pure human subject . In Star Trek, humans are made to be human through their constant encounters with nonhuman forms, and the possibility …

Introduction: The Geographies Of Star Trek, Mark Alan Rhodes Ii, Fiona M. Davidson, Hannah C. Gunderman Aug 2024

Introduction: The Geographies Of Star Trek, Mark Alan Rhodes Ii, Fiona M. Davidson, Hannah C. Gunderman

The Geographical Bulletin

There are relatively few media products that can compete with Star Trek in terms of longevity and cultural saturation . First introduced to audiences in 1966, the franchise now encompasses more than fifty years, six television series, thirteen films, countless spin-off novels and ancillary books, multiple annual international fan conventions and an enduring place in the popular culture lexicon of the English language—a remarkable feat for a television show that almost never made it to the screen and, even when it did, was canceled for poor ratings after just three seasons . San Francisco served as both the site of …

Owning The Future: Manifest Destiny And The Vision Of American Hegemony In Star Trek, Fiona M. Davidson Aug 2024

Owning The Future: Manifest Destiny And The Vision Of American Hegemony In Star Trek, Fiona M. Davidson

The Geographical Bulletin

As one of the most enduring television franchises of the late 20th century, Star Trek has had an unparalleled influence on the popular culture representation of humanity’s future as ultimately utopian . In this paper, however, I argue that even as the on-screen text of Star Trek was condemning the narrow parochial interests of nationalism, greed, xenophobia and fear, the narrative subtext throughout the fifty years of the franchise supported the idea of the expansion of western hegemonic power . The paper utilizes examples from all f ive series and the thirteen films to illustrate the ways in which western …

Leon Yacher: Scholar, Mentor, And Eclectic Geographer, Michael S. Devivo Aug 2024

Leon Yacher: Scholar, Mentor, And Eclectic Geographer, Michael S. Devivo

The Geographical Bulletin

As Kenzer (2001) has noted, “unlike practitioners in other academic fields, when it comes to the intellectual history of our discipline, geographers love to dabble .” However, examining this dabbling has normally been restricted to examining the contributions of faculty in Ph .D .-granting departments . Indeed, our discipline’s history is rich, but written accounts are incomplete, for the voices of geographers serving in undergraduate programs at colleges and universities of little prestige have for the most part been silent . These programs are housed in institutions that are home to the vast majority of academic geographers, many of whom …

Outbidding With Ontology: Routine, Rebel Justice, And The Competition For Legitimacy, Patrick A. Schmidt Aug 2024

Outbidding With Ontology: Routine, Rebel Justice, And The Competition For Legitimacy, Patrick A. Schmidt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Civil wars upset the everyday routines and relationships of ordinary people. Though recent research into civil wars has significantly increased the degree of study into non-conflict activities of rebel groups, particularly in rebel governance, rebel groups have not yet been seen as ontological security providers, capable of developing and reinstating some form of normalcy for civilian populations. This thesis seeks to promote this view of rebel groups, theorizing that rebel justice systems serve as a distinct space for insurgents to routinize interactions with civilians and signal their desire and ability to serve as capable providers of ontological security. Further, I …

The Lumbee Tribe And Mmiwg2s: How A Crisis Hides Behind Unreported Data, Daniel Oxendine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S) crisis has existed since European settlers first came to the continent and has the potential to affect all Indigenous communities in the United States (Schilling 2018). Despite what federal data shows, I argue that the MMIWG2S crisis affects the Lumbee Tribe based on conversations on MMIWG2S that are coming from the Lumbee community. The primary objective of this thesis research project has been to conduct exploratory research through a case study to understand how the MMIWG2S crisis affects the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. I use the critical lenses of …

Rural Cervical Cancer Survivors’ Experiences Of Gender Roles: An Application Of Social Constructionism, Olivia K. Pointer Aug 2024

Rural Cervical Cancer Survivors’ Experiences Of Gender Roles: An Application Of Social Constructionism, Olivia K. Pointer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rural cervical cancer survivors, or individuals with a form of cancer that originated in the cervix of the reproductive system, may be uniquely impacted by socially constructed gender roles. The present study utilized the term “females” to describe those who self-identify as having a cervix, which may include cisgender, transgender, intersex, and non-binary gender identities. Rural females have been indicated to hold salience in traditional gender expectations as partners, mothers, community members, and more, which may add survivorship complexity for cervical cancer survivors within this population by to attempting to fulfill gender roles to the pre-cancer level. Moreover, rural cervical …

An Archaeological Exploration Of Fatty's Place And Its Contribution To Early Tourism In The Garden Of The Gods, Aaron Anthony Acosta Aug 2024

An Archaeological Exploration Of Fatty's Place And Its Contribution To Early Tourism In The Garden Of The Gods, Aaron Anthony Acosta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Garden of the Gods Park, east of Gateway Rocks, Edwin “Fatty” Rice owned and operated a business that sold curios and offered amenities to visiting tourists. Fatty’s Place was the only establishment of its kind to exist on the grounds of the park. However, not much recognition has been given to Rice’s contribution to tourism in the Garden. This thesis uses archaeological exploration, especially ground-penetrating radar, framed by place theory to shed light on Rice’s involvement in the advent of tourism within the park. By providing three narratives, Rice’s place as imagined, as remembered, and as built, the …

Baby Dust: A Narrative Analysis Of Infertility Journeys On Youtube, Patricia Carrillo Aug 2024

Baby Dust: A Narrative Analysis Of Infertility Journeys On Youtube, Patricia Carrillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infertility is a distressing experience for those diagnosed and often exacerbated by engagement with biomedical treatments. This thesis is an exploration of infertility “journeys” posted on YouTube. Through a narrative analysis of 8 YouTube channels, several key themes were identified, specifically embodiment of the infertility label, barriers to treatment, and agency. This work uses the mindful body framework to look at how the individual body, social body, and body politic shape and reinforce these themes in the context of biomedical infertility treatment. These findings suggest infertility is a dynamic and distressing experience but by engaging in the narrative process, through …
