Technoculture And Language Models In Archaeology: Reconstructing And Preserving Cultural Narratives Through Digital Humanities, James Hutson Sep 2024

Technoculture And Language Models In Archaeology: Reconstructing And Preserving Cultural Narratives Through Digital Humanities, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Technoculture, which examines the intersection of culture and technology, has increasingly permeated archaeological practice, transforming both scholarly research and public engagement [1-3]. The introduction of digital tools such as virtual reality (VR), geographic information systems (GIS), and large language models (LLMs) has democratized access to archaeological knowledge, enabling communities to engage more actively with their cultural heritage [4-6]. This short article explores the mutual influence of technocultural studies and AI technologies on archaeology, with a focus on the preservation and reconstruction of cultural narratives through digital means.

The first aspect of this intersection lies in how technocultural tools are creating …

Never Again Is Now: Comparing International Law And Guidelines Of Genocide To The United States’ Treatment Of The Transgender Community To Find A Charge Of Genocide, Kassandra Caton Sep 2024

Never Again Is Now: Comparing International Law And Guidelines Of Genocide To The United States’ Treatment Of The Transgender Community To Find A Charge Of Genocide, Kassandra Caton

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

Since 2020, there has been an exponential increase in the proposed legislation at the state and federal levels that directly targets the transgender community. In 2023 alone, 609 different pieces of legislation were put forth for debate, some of which would make being transgender a felony offense. This trend has continued into 2024, with 620 pieces of legislation put forth as of July. The United States’ lawmaking bodies have become a feedback loop of persecution against a vulnerable community, which, if left unchecked, will likely result in the outright extermination of this community. The only concrete action that would potentially …

Why Nigeria Needs A Femicide Law, Jessica Ojiugo Chinonye Sep 2024

Why Nigeria Needs A Femicide Law, Jessica Ojiugo Chinonye

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The Federal Republic of Nigeria does not have a law against femicide or comprehensive global femicide data. The numbers currently reported at the national level are questionable, especially with the prevalence of economic-motivated harvesting of female reproductive organs in the country. The lack of a legalized femicide law has exacerbated the underreporting of such activities in Nigeria and has made the severity of the crime less visible. This article aims to name the problem by defining and advocating for a femicide law encompassing the social realities of many Nigerian females.

Developing Empathetic Ai: Exploring The Potential Of Artificial Intelligence To Understand And Simulate Family Dynamics And Cultural Identity, Emily Barnes, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly impacted various domains. Yet, the exploration of AI's potential to develop a deep understanding of family culture and identity remains underexplored. This study introduces the concept of "a love of grandma and apple pie" to symbolize the potential of various AI to internalize and appreciate familial relationships, cultural traditions, and personal identity. The proposed study would investigate how an advanced deep learning model, trained on diverse unstructured datasets—including multimedia data from 100 families-could learn and reflect human-like emotions, values, and cultural understanding. Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for visual data processing …

Creation Story Motifs As Expressions Of Identity And Resiliency In The Visual Culture Of Kahnawà:Ke, Jana Ondrechen Hallford

Theses

Kahnawa:ke is a First Nations reserve near Montreal in Quebec, Canada, with a rich history of creative expression. This is a Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk) community, a part of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, a prominent First Peoples group of the Northeast Woodlands. Like many other Indigenous communities, Kahnawa:ke is in the process of revitalizing and renormalizing their culture after centuries of assimilation efforts and pressures to separate them from their traditions. Their creation story, known as the Sky Woman Epoch, is foundational to this culture. While there are a number of creation symbols, this study will focus on the Sky Dome, a …

"Boycott" -- A Proposed Legal Definition Put To Test, Sharona Aharoni-Goldenberg, Gerry Leisman Sep 2024

"Boycott" -- A Proposed Legal Definition Put To Test, Sharona Aharoni-Goldenberg, Gerry Leisman

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

The definition of "boycott" attracts controversy in legislation, case law, and dictionaries. This paper questions what the worthy legal definition of "boycott" is. It examines and analyzes various sources on "boycott." We conclude that the most distinctive characteristic of a "boycott" is omissions, such as refusal to provide services. The antithesis of omission is commission. Omissions signify allowing something to happen, whereas commissions signify causing it to happen. Since boycotts concern omissions, they entail less legislative interference with the boycotter's right of autonomy. Yet, the autonomy of the boycotters should be restrained when they coerce the boycott's targets, coerce others …

Overview And Impact Of Young Feminist Organizing In Mexico: Rapid Evidence Assessment, Esperanza Basurto-Alcalde, Natalia E. Tenorio Tovar, Paulina Márquez González, Anel Julieta Bobadilla Negrete, Sonia Cruz Del Águila, Ricardo Regules-García Sep 2024

Overview And Impact Of Young Feminist Organizing In Mexico: Rapid Evidence Assessment, Esperanza Basurto-Alcalde, Natalia E. Tenorio Tovar, Paulina Márquez González, Anel Julieta Bobadilla Negrete, Sonia Cruz Del Águila, Ricardo Regules-García

Adolescents and Young People

In Mexico, young feminists and youth-led feminist movements are already leading the way and pursuing radical approaches to addressing social injustice, such as gender-based violence (GBV), lack of sexual and reproductive health care, and gender discrimination. Although young feminist organizations (YFOs) in Mexico are showing an increasing ability to advocate for and effect change, there is limited systematized evidence on YFO strategies and impact. This Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) provides an overview of the YFO landscape strategies, and impact on policy and social change in Mexico from 2010 to 2023. Young feminists were defined as those aged 15 to 30. …

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady Sep 2024

Along For The Journey: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Research, Alissa A. Droog, Kari D. Weaver, Frances Brady

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Graduate students’ identities and personal lives are heavily tied to their experiences of research, and many struggle to find, understand, and use information for research purposes. Using a drawing exercise rooted in visual research methods combined with semi-structured interviews, a research team in the United States and Canada explored graduate student perceptions of research with nineteen participants. Thematic analysis identified six themes: research is abstract; research is an odyssey; social support makes or breaks the student experience; research is an emotional continuum; interplay between identity/values; information is problematic. The study has implications for how librarians support graduate student research.

Review Of Williams, Elizabeth W, Primitive Normativity: Race Sexuality, And Temporality In Colonial Kenya, Bright Alozie Sep 2024

Review Of Williams, Elizabeth W, Primitive Normativity: Race Sexuality, And Temporality In Colonial Kenya, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Primitive Normativity is a groundbreaking and essential read for anyone interested in the intersections of race, sexuality, and colonialism. It accomplishes the goal of anti-colonial history, as Williams acknowledges, by allowing us to imagine new ways of being and knowing, thereby altering the continuing conditions of coloniality in the spaces we research and the spaces from which we write. This book is a powerful work that will influence and inspire future scholarship in the field. Producing a triumph of intellectual courage and witty excellence, Williams deserves her flowers for this seminal piece.

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Soccer is a sport being performed in a very dynamic manner. It requires soccer players to be able to develop high muscle force in a very short period of time. The aim of the study was to evaluate the strength and jumping abilities of young soccer players playing in different positions on the field. The study included 49 adolescent soccer players: 6 goalkeepers, 15 defenders, 17 midfielders and 11 strikers. We measured peak torques (PT), total work (TW), and average power (AP) developed by the knee flexors and extensors under isokinetic conditions at angular velocities of 60°⋅s-1, 180°⋅s-1 and 300°⋅s-1 …

Psychiatric Polygenic Risk Scores: Experience, Hope For Utility, And Concerns Among Child And Adolescent Psychiatrists, Amanda R Merner, Page M Trotter, Lauren A Ginn, Jason Bach, Katherine J Freedberg, Takahiro Soda, Eric A Storch, Stacey Pereira, Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Recent advances in psychiatric genetics have enabled the use of polygenic risk scores (PRS) to estimate genetic risk for psychiatric disorders. However, the potential use of PRS in child and adolescent psychiatry has raised concerns. This study provides an in-depth examination of attitudes among child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAP) regarding the use of PRS in psychiatry. We conducted semi-structured interviews with U.S.-based CAP (n=29) who possess expertise in genetics. The majority of CAP indicated that PRS have limited clinical utility in their current form and are not ready for clinical implementation. Most clinicians stated that nothing would motivate them to …

For as long as there has been work, there has been a “future of work,” through humans’ ingenuity and drive to get things done easier, faster, and better. With the industrial revolution, efforts to shape a better future of work were dominated by improvements in machinery that soon led to fears that these machines might take away jobs from workers, enriching the rich and leaving the poor poorer (Allen, 2017). Later, John Maynard Keynes (1930) optimistically predicted technological unemployment (a net loss of jobs due to shifts in the nature of work outpacing the economy’s ability to redeploy talent) would …

Persecution Of Christian Confessions In Ukrainian Podilia During The 1930s, Anatoliy Voynarovskiy, Natalka Zhmud, Valentyna Hrebenova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

In this article, attention is focused on the characteristics of Bolshevik rule in the Podilia region, particularly its efforts to eradicate Protestantism. In the legal framework of contemporary Ukraine, the separation of religion from the state is declared, and the right to freedom of conscience and religion is guaranteed. This is a crucial and fundamental position for building a rule-of-law state and civil society. Harmonious relations between society, religion, and the state are an extremely complex process that requires a thorough understanding of historical context. The role of religion has gained particular relevance at the current stage, as Ukraine defends …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

American anthropology is engaged in significant self-reckonings that call for big changes to how anthropology is practiced. These include (1) recognizing and taking seriously the demands to decolonize the ways research is done, (2) addressing precarious employment in academic anthropology, and (3) creating a discipline better positioned to respond to urgent societal needs. A central role for ethnographic methods training is a thread that runs through each of these three reckonings. This article, written by a team of cultural, biocultural, and linguistic anthropologists, outlines key connections between ethnographic methods training and the challenges facing anthropology. We draw on insights from …
