Heat-Treated Soybean Meal In Beef Cattle Diets, Grady Gullickson Jan 2024

Heat-Treated Soybean Meal In Beef Cattle Diets, Grady Gullickson

Animal Sciences

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate replacing dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) with heat-treated soybean (TSBM) at increasing rates in forage-based diets on steer growth performance, nutrient flow, and digestibility. Experiment 1: 70 angus-based steers were utilized in a generalized randomized block design for an 85-d growing study at the NDSU Beef Cattle Research Complex. Experiment 2: five fistulated Jersey steers fitted with ruminal, duodenal, and ileal cannulas were utilized in a 4 × 5 row column design for 56 d to measure nutrient flow and digestibility. Diets were formulated to replace DDGS, included in the diet at 16% …

The Impact Of Media On Price Paid For Thoroughbred Horses At Auction, Steven Anderson Jan 2024

The Impact Of Media On Price Paid For Thoroughbred Horses At Auction, Steven Anderson

Animal Sciences

It has been said a picture is worth a thousand words, but the economic value of that picture for livestock sales transactions has not been quantified. The objective of this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the presence of media (photos and/or video) on sale prices of Thoroughbreds. Online auction sale data from two U.S. Thoroughbred auction sites were used to compare 18,221 horses that sold and 4,215 horses that failed to meet the minimum desired bid. Sellers that provided media of their horses at auction received approximately $25,000 more for weanlings, $74,000 more for yearlings, and $89,500 more …

One-Carbon Metabolites, Fetal Growth, Maternal Oxidative Stress, And Fetal Programming During Early Gestation, Layla King Jan 2024

One-Carbon Metabolites, Fetal Growth, Maternal Oxidative Stress, And Fetal Programming During Early Gestation, Layla King

Animal Sciences

In ruminant production systems, maternal nutrient intake and supplementation practices vary widely throughout the industry. Adequate maternal nutrient supply is critical for fetal development and subsequent offspring performance and health. Therefore, determining strategic supplementation of specific nutrients during critical developmental windows is crucial to fetal growth during early gestation will positively impact beef cattle production systems. In this dissertation, two experiments using beef heifers were conducted to test the hypothesis that differing maternal rate of gain (achieved through differing intake) during the first 63 d of pregnancy would compromise indices of maternal and fetal development; and that strategic nutrient supplementation …

Teitelbaum, Michael L. Casazza, Cory T. Overton, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Elliott L. Matchett, Fiona Mcduie, Austen A. Lorenz, Joshua T. Ackerman, Susan E.W. De La Cruz, Diann J. Prosser

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Interactions between wildlife and livestock can lead to cross-species disease transmission, which incurs economic costs and threatens wildlife conservation. Wild waterfowl are natural hosts of avian influenza viruses (AIVs), are often abundant near poultry farms, and have been linked to outbreaks of AIVs in poultry. Interspecific and seasonal variation in waterfowl movement and habitat use means that the risk of disease transmission between wild birds and poultry inevitably varies across species, space, and time. Here, we used GPS telemetry data from 10 waterfowl species in and near California's Central Valley, a region where both wild waterfowl and domestic poultry are …

Gut Pathobiont Enrichment Observed In A Population Predisposed To Dementia, Type 2 Diabetics Of Mexican Descent Living In South Texas, Lisa M Matz, Nisarg S Shah, Laura Porterfield, Olivia M Stuyck, Michael D Jochum, Rakez Kayed, Giulio Taglialatela, Randall J Urban, Shelly A Buffington

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common forerunner of neurodegeneration and accompanying dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD), yet the mechanisms underlying this comorbidity remain unresolved. Individuals of Mexican descent living in South Texas have increased prevalence of comorbid T2D and early onset AD, despite low incidence of the APOE-ε4 risk variant among the population and an absence of a similar predisposition among relatives residing in Mexico - suggesting a role for environmental factors in coincident T2D and AD susceptibility. We therefore sought to test if differences in gut community structure could be observed in this population prior to any AD …

Absorbent Minds: Challenging Utopia Through Atmospheric Architecture, Kaitlyn Marie Bridgeman Jan 2024

Absorbent Minds: Challenging Utopia Through Atmospheric Architecture, Kaitlyn Marie Bridgeman

Architecture Theses

Since the time of John Amos Comenius the way in which we teach has remained constant. A simplified metaphor for learning amplifies the argument that the view of early education is in a utopian state. When in reality the curriculum is a mold to fit learners into, that prepares them to become a cog in the wheel we call the workforce. The goal is to combat this problem using principles from both the Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches to learning to create an atmosphere that inspires learners and allows for the flourishing of creativity and self-discovery. This thesis aims …

Psychosomatic Transformation: The Cathartic Cycle Of Time And Healing, Meghan Danielle Gregston Jan 2024

Psychosomatic Transformation: The Cathartic Cycle Of Time And Healing, Meghan Danielle Gregston

Architecture Theses

Concerning healthcare today, it is clear to see that there is a disconnect between our understanding of physical health and of mental health. Not having access or not being able to afford any type of medical treatment is a problem this country needs to solve. While not having the power to write prescriptions or diagnose illnesses, architecture has the power to affect us on a more holistic level. Architecture’s influence on our mood from the manipulation of a space’s atmosphere is essential to the connection between the metaphysical mind and physical body. Our bodies respond to these emotions made through …

The Persistent Treatise, Dana Neacsu, Paul Douglas Callister Jan 2024

The Persistent Treatise, Dana Neacsu, Paul Douglas Callister

Law Faculty Publications

The legal treatise remains a pillar of the American legal system and the rule of law, despite claims it might be dying and variations in quantitative citations to treatises over time. Indeed, several treatises evidence increased citation in U.S. Supreme Court opinions during the last several decades. Surprisingly, the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Robert’s Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, increasingly sees fit to rely on proto-treatises, such as Bracton, Coke, and Blackstone. This article provides empirical data and qualitative analysis to support this claim, highlighting the sometimes declining but nevertheless significant presence of treatises in …

Beyond Memory: A Person-Centered Approach To Dementia Design, Samantha Quaal Jan 2024

Beyond Memory: A Person-Centered Approach To Dementia Design, Samantha Quaal

Architecture Theses

At some point in each of our lives, a loved one or even ourselves will end up in some assisted living facility. Today, there is a negative connotation behind senior care facilities; they are portrayed by having drab interiors mixed with the faint sounds of squeaky wheelchairs that echo long, stale hallways. The population of older adults in the world is constantly growing, and a profound number of them have a form of memory loss like Alzheimer’s. How can we design a senior living center that makes those with Alzheimer’s feel safe and keep their minds active? How can we …

Amalgamation: Exploring The Context Of Health And Nature Of Liberia, Worlikema Angel Golijikaye

Architecture Theses

As a developing country, Liberia still faces significant gaps in essential services. About a year and a half ago, my mother explained, a loved one of hers passed due to health complications and couldn't receive help because there wasn't a clinic nearby. This revelation stirred a mix of emotions within me. It ultimately led me to formulate my thesis, which revolves around establishing a regional clinic or hospital. This study focuses on how to better engage with the health, nature, and stories of Liberia people within the context of clinics. The design process incorporates the history of vegetation (particularly trees), …

First there is a discussion of biophilic design, community centers, and youth centers with the intent to understand what they are and the benefits of each. Seven case studies are examined next to provide examples of how biophilic design has been applied to community centers, youth centers, and preschools. The design of a youth center that uses biophilic design principles to foster a relationship with children and nature is presented as a solution. The created youth center is titled Elk River Community Center. There is …

Cosmic Curiosities And Earthy Wonders: A Sensuous Reimagining Of The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science, Brady Kowalzek Jan 2024

Cosmic Curiosities And Earthy Wonders: A Sensuous Reimagining Of The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science, Brady Kowalzek

Architecture Theses

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science envisions a transformation that acknowledges our connection to nature, aiming to deepen our understanding of this relationship. This transformation stems from the belief that humans are part of nature, not its conquerors. The museum has achieved LEED Platinum certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. However, critics argue it serves more as a testament to human achievements than as a sanctuary for nature, missing the chance to integrate with its surrounding environment. To address this, the proposed transformation emphasizes architectural design in harmony with nature, moving away from mere mechanical …

Designing For Shared Spaces: An Approach To Enhancing Animal Welfare And Foster Human-Animal Connections Through Compassionate Design, Isabella Nyseth Jan 2024

Designing For Shared Spaces: An Approach To Enhancing Animal Welfare And Foster Human-Animal Connections Through Compassionate Design, Isabella Nyseth

Architecture Theses

The provided research conveys the problems being faced in animal shelters that were influenced by COVID-19 and how it impacted the overcrowding rates driven by the rise in pet relinquishment numbers and lack of social response by humans. Due to the lack of proper awareness and standards for shelters, animal welfare is not being observed, causing placement in inhumane environments, triggering severe stress, and causing mental/physical deterioration. Animal welfare is suffering because of the lack of human response for animal life. These situations that are impacting animal well-being have greatly increased because people are less willing to connect to animals …

Arachnid Sports + Entertainment Complex, Carson F. Wilkin Jan 2024

Arachnid Sports + Entertainment Complex, Carson F. Wilkin

Architecture Theses

Las Vegas has become a sport energized metropolis. The city not only offers shows, restaurants, and gambling, but now also a successful professional sports market. At the cost of more infrastructure, Vegas has also lost some of its connection to its local community. The strip can be categorized as a tourist grabber, that has also become a money leech and ultimately reducing the interactions from locals across the Nevada area. The metro area has started creating and incorporating many sports teams that have brought community more together than anything in the downtown spaces. Sports offer love and passion that can …
