Transposable elements (TEs) are repetitive DNA sequences which create mutations and generate genetic diversity across the tree of life. In amniote vertebrates, TEs have been mainly studied in mammals and birds, whose genomes generally display low TE diversity. Squamates (Order Squamata; including ∼11,000 extant species of lizards and snakes) show as much variation in TE abundance and activity as they do in species and phenotypes. Despite this high TE activity, squamate genomes are remarkably uniform in size. We hypothesize that novel, lineage-specific genome dynamics have evolved over the course of squamate evolution. To understand the interplay between TEs and host …

Developmental Patterns Underlying Variation In Form And Function Exhibited By House Gecko Toe Pads, Aaron H. Griffing, Tony Gamble, Ashmika Behere, Timothy E. Higham, Greta M. Keller, John Resener, Thomas J. Sanger
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Adhesive toe pads have evolved numerous times over lizard evolutionary history, most notably in geckos. Despite significant variation in adult toe pad morphology across independent origins of toe pads, early developmental patterns of toe pad morphogenesis are similar among distantly related species. In these distant phylogenetic comparisons, toe pad variation is achieved during the later stages of development. We aimed to understand how toe pad variation is generated among species sharing a single evolutionary origin of toe pads (house geckos—Hemidactylus). We investigated toe pad functional variation and developmental patterns in three species of Hemidactylus, ranging from highly …

Testing The Strength Of Thin Feather-Edge Monolithic Multilayered Zirconia Crowns: A Pilot Study With A Novel Acoustic Test, Estelle Saab, Camille Haddad, Maher Abboud, Maha Daou, Amine Zoghbi
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Introduction: Limited research has explored the mechanical characteristics of recently introduced multilayered monolithic zirconia (MZC) crowns with feather-edge margins design. Moreover, most of the conventional techniques for evaluating the mechanical behavior of brittle dental ceramics rely on destructive tests, making it impossible to precisely evaluate real strength values due to premature crack initiation detection failure.
Objectives: The main objective of the study was to assess the load capacity of translucent multilayered monolithic zirconia crowns with feather-edge margin thicknesses of 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm. Additionally, the research introduced a novel non-destructive acoustic emission testing (AET) technique in the …
Is Chunking Multimodal?: Music Reading Expertise Effects On Eye Movements During A Cross-Modal Visual Search Paradigm, Nicole Arco
Is Chunking Multimodal?: Music Reading Expertise Effects On Eye Movements During A Cross-Modal Visual Search Paradigm, Nicole Arco
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Experts show performance advantages during visual search due to their extensive experience with domain-specific stimuli. Experts form memory representations for meaningful visual patterns, called chunks, that group together multiple chess features. Prior work suggests that the ability for experts to precisely encode a search template facilitates visual search performance (e.g. Hout & Goldinger, 2015). In music, expert musicians might also form chunks (see e.g., Maturi & Sheridan, 2020), although it is unclear what constitutes a chunk in music. The current study addressed the possibility that chunks are multimodal by introducing a new auditory-visual cross-modal version of the visual search paradigm …
Stable Oxygen Isotope Variability As A Proxy For Large-Scale Dynamics Of The South American Summer Monsoon, Rebecca Orrison
Stable Oxygen Isotope Variability As A Proxy For Large-Scale Dynamics Of The South American Summer Monsoon, Rebecca Orrison
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Terrestrial archives of oxygen isotope records are particularly important for the study of South American hydrology, where hydroclimate observations over the historical period are sparse and often not long enough to characterize multidecadal to centennial-scale changes. Knowledge of such low-frequency changes is critically important for interpreting and constraining projections of future change and detecting the emergence of forced change beyond the envelope of natural variability. This dissertation focuses on the past, present, and future of South American tropical and subtropical climate, with an emphasis on the mature phase of the monsoon season (December, January, and February; DJF) using oxygen isotopes …
Ribosome Hibernation Factor Induces Antibiotic Persisters Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis In Neutrophil-Rich Lung Lesions, Jamie Corro
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the etiological agent of tuberculosis, is a prescient global health threat and the leading cause of death by an infectious agent. Treatment of Mtb infection involves administering 2-4 antibiotics for a minimum of 6 months. This extended drug regimen is required to target a subpopulation of persistent bacilli. As their name implies, these bacteria can “persist” by acquiring nonhereditary and transient antibiotic tolerance. Although the precise mechanism is unknown, it’s often attributed to slowing cellular growth and metabolic processes. During zinc deprivation, bacteria can remodel their ribosomes by replacing their zinc-binding paralogues containing the CXXC motif (C+) …
Building Engaged Audiences: The Influence Of Multimedia-Inclusive Posts On Online Engagement Breadth And Depth For Arts And Culture Nonprofit Organizations, Sabrina Jeffcoat
Building Engaged Audiences: The Influence Of Multimedia-Inclusive Posts On Online Engagement Breadth And Depth For Arts And Culture Nonprofit Organizations, Sabrina Jeffcoat
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
In recent years, broad access to digital communication tools provided by the “tech boom” has forced arts and culture nonprofit organizations (ACNPO) to transition to social media and mobile applications to engage audiences. While various approaches focus on building breadth (i.e. recirculation of content) and depth (i.e. replies) of engagement, ACNPO use multimedia to spur discussion and dissemination of their mission. Dependent on individual donors who generally give in small amounts, ACNPO are reliant on effective and visual social media campaigns to drive virality and broaden marketing appeal. Yet questions remain whether the presence of multimedia-inclusive posts (MIP) generates broader …
The Shifting Suns: A New Understanding Of The Five Suns Story Of The Mexica Empire And 16th Century Colonial Mexico, Heungtae Yang
The Shifting Suns: A New Understanding Of The Five Suns Story Of The Mexica Empire And 16th Century Colonial Mexico, Heungtae Yang
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
In this dissertation, I study the Mexica creation story commonly known as the Five Suns Story (Abbreviation: FSS) to explain the coexistence of multiple texts of FSS, the evolution of FSS from 1400 to 1600, and its multiple functions in multiple cultural spheres of the Mexica society. In contrast to previous studies up to the 1990s, whose main goals were to cite the Five Suns Story as part of a larger research topics, reconstruct a pure pre-Columbian version of the story, and analyze specific aspects of its symbolism, I conduct an intensive study of the FSS that brings together multiple …
Leveraging Redundancy As A Link Between Spreading Dynamics On And Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa
Leveraging Redundancy As A Link Between Spreading Dynamics On And Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
A constant quest in network science has been in the development of methods to identify the most relevant components in a dynamical system solely via the interaction structure amongst its subsystems. This information allows the development of control and intervention strategies in biochemical signaling and epidemic spreading. We highlight the relevant components in heterogeneous dynamical system by their patterns of redundancy, which can connect how dynamics affect network topology and which pathways are necessary to spreading phenomena on networks. In order to measure the redundancies in a large class of empirical systems, we develop the backbone of directed networks methodology, …
Advancing Small Molecule Therapies For Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, Sawyer M. Hicks
Advancing Small Molecule Therapies For Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, Sawyer M. Hicks
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic disorder caused by the expression of expanded CUG (CUGexp) repeat RNA from the myotonic dystrophy protein kinase (DMPK) gene. This CUGexp repeat RNA’s gain-of-function mechanism leads to the sequestration of muscleblind-like (MBNL) proteins, resulting in widespread alternative splicing dysregulation across tissues. Despite significant research, there are currently no approved therapeutics targeting the underlying causes of DM1. This dissertation explores the development and optimization of a novel class of small molecules, Modified Polycyclic Compounds (MPCs), designed to address splicing dysregulation in DM1. MPCs were designed from previously published …
Bias-Aware Gaze Uniformity Assessment In Group Images, Omkar Kulkarni
Bias-Aware Gaze Uniformity Assessment In Group Images, Omkar Kulkarni
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Today, more than 5 billion photos are captured every day, with smartphones generating over 94\% of these images. However, despite advancements in technology, achieving aesthetically pleasing group photos remains challenging, especially when it comes to aligning the direction of everyone’s gaze. While current methods focus on facial features, they often fail to ensure consistent gaze direction. The introduction of the iPhone's Live mode, which captures a 1.5-second video snippet along with still images, complicates the selection of the best key photo due to its subjective nature and a lack of publicly available data, especially during the pandemic.
To address these …
A Study Of Mercury Speciation Analysis Of Blood Using Liquid Chromatography Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry For Human Biomonitoring And Clinical Applications, Emily Jean Pacer
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mercury (Hg) exposure from environmental sources and consumer products presents a significant public health concern. The toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) differs considerably from inorganic mercury (iHg), such that their separation and quantification in whole blood is helpful in identifying sources and possible pathways of exposure. Speciation methods provide a more detailed picture regarding human exposure to toxic mercury species and their effects on human health. This dissertation focuses on advanced analytical techniques for human biomonitoring and clinical diagnosis of Hg exposure. The primary aim of this research is to address important knowledge gaps and analytical challenges in studies of Hg …
The Forest Watches: A Hybrid Study On The Reintroduction Of Extinct Animals, Devin H. Jinadasa
The Forest Watches: A Hybrid Study On The Reintroduction Of Extinct Animals, Devin H. Jinadasa
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Rewilding is said to be the hope for the future. Rewilding will rebalance ecosystems, potentially saving those on the point of collapse. But how can you rewild an ecosystem? Reintroduction. The bringing back of extinct animals to fill a vacant role in the ecosystem. Now most would associate reintroduction with dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. However, this specific project will seek to combine speculative fiction with contemporary environmental concerns around the subject of reintroducing a modern extinct animal into an ecosystem. This will be undertaken through a narrative told through the voices and perspectives of respective animal characters in third person …
Everyone’S A Critic: Processes Of Legitimation In The Video Essay Genre On Youtube, Kendall Nagi
Everyone’S A Critic: Processes Of Legitimation In The Video Essay Genre On Youtube, Kendall Nagi
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The rise of video essays as a popular genre on YouTube is a notable development in the media criticism and intellectual work in online spaces. Theorization on criticism as intellectual work and the performance of expertise and credibility is well developed within sociology (Alexander 2004; Jacobs & Townsley 2017) but esearch on YouTube specifically is quite limited within the social sciences. Most existing research on the video essay genre comes from media studies and communications scholarship (McWhirter 2022; Smarandache 2021; Sylvia & Moody 2022). This study seeks to understand how creators working in the video essay genre, and more specifically, …
The Effects Of Human-Driven Land Use Change On American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nesting Patterns, Madison Wallwork
The Effects Of Human-Driven Land Use Change On American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) Nesting Patterns, Madison Wallwork
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) have received little scientific attention in the context of human-driven land use change. The goal of my study is to investigate how land use change may be affecting the spatial ecology of alligator nesting in Florida. Areas directly impacted by humans are growing rapidly in Florida, yet the impacts of this land use change on alligator populations and reproduction are largely unknown. Alligators are ecosystem engineers and apex predators, and their nests often double as nests for other reptilian species. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand how human-driven land use change may be impacting …
Development Of Erosion Functions For Micp-Treated Beach Sand, Saeed Booshi
Development Of Erosion Functions For Micp-Treated Beach Sand, Saeed Booshi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) using the recently introduced bioslurry treatment method via surface percolation. To simulate realistic water forcing conditions, a piston-style erosion rate testing apparatus, specifically the Florida Department of Transportation Sediment Erosion Rate Flume, was used. Initial tests conducted at a high shear stress of 42 Pa revealed that a combination of 15% bioslurry and 85% cementation solution exhibited the strongest erosion resistance when compared to other ratios between bioslurry and cementation solution. Subsequent experiments focused on separating the specimen into a "loose" part and a “surface crust,” with shear stresses …
Moving Beyond The Barriers: Understanding How Youth Development Professionals Advocate For Disability Inclusion Within Mentoring Programs, Genelle C. Thomas
Moving Beyond The Barriers: Understanding How Youth Development Professionals Advocate For Disability Inclusion Within Mentoring Programs, Genelle C. Thomas
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the proven youth development benefits of mentoring programs, youth with disabilities are often excluded from these opportunities. Fortunately, training and certification programs exist to support organizations in improving disability inclusion strategies and practices. Despite these opportunities, organizations still regularly struggle with making meaningful changes in this area. Therefore, it is important to understand how graduates of these training and certification programs experience facilitators and barriers to disability inclusion, what advocacy strategies they leverage to address these barriers, and how they impact their organizations to become more inclusive of youth with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to further …

Rhetorical (Re)Inscription Practices Among Black Intercollegiate Football Participants In The Era Of Name, Image And Likeness, Mikayla Beaudrie
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When intercollegiate athletic participants were permitted the right to profit off of their name, image and likeness (NIL), the landscape of college sports was fundamentally changed. This qualitative explanatory case study investigated one consequence of that change: the discourse of amateurism. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has historically identified participants in the athletic programs it oversees with the word “student-athlete.” In the years since the word was first introduced, its meaning has generally been static. In short, the linguistic sign “student-athlete” has been signified in and by the discourse to reflect the amateur status of collegiate sport participants, emphasizing …
Large Language Models For Multimodal User Interaction In A Virtual Environment, Ahmed A. Sayed
Large Language Models For Multimodal User Interaction In A Virtual Environment, Ahmed A. Sayed
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly popular, but many barriers exist for individuals with little experience in coding, 3D modeling, or creating their own virtual experiences. The current tools used for content creation are often viewed as complex or frustrating, and they exhibit a steep learning curve. This problem presents an opportunity to develop tools incorporating Natural User Interfaces that better support end users. One such possible tool to assist users is Large Language Models (LLM), which can, extract a user's intention through speech or text. We posit how using LLMs can better support novice and expert developers alike, and using …

Heritable Genome Editing, And The Future Of Novel Reproductive Technologies, Kerry L. Macintosh
Heritable Genome Editing, And The Future Of Novel Reproductive Technologies, Kerry L. Macintosh
Faculty Publications
This Article compares human reproductive cloning (HRC) and
heritable genome editing (HGE) to identify factors that encourage bans
on novel reproductive technologies. HRC drew legislative opposition
in part because it involved asexual reproduction and was incorrectly
associated with copying. HGE and other technologies that involve
sexual reproduction do not have those problematic qualities. HRC also
became entangled with research in which human embryos were cloned
to be harvested for their stem cells. HGE did not because scientists
learned how to create and edit pluripotent stem cells without creating
embryos. However, the legal history of HRC predicts that reproductive
technologies strongly …
Development And Evaluation Of A Retrofittable Variable Rate Applicator Controller, Ahmed Abdalla
Development And Evaluation Of A Retrofittable Variable Rate Applicator Controller, Ahmed Abdalla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The need to optimize resource utilization while increasing crop productivity is paramount. This research proposes a Low-cost Retrofittable Variable Rate Applicator Controller (VRAC) that aims to leverage the adoption of Variable Rate Technologies. The controller operates via the Raspberry Pi platform, a Global Positioning System (GPS), a stepper motor drive, and an anti-slip wheel encoder. The VRAC allows precise, on-the-fly control of variable-rate application of farming inputs. It utilizes GPS with 10 cm accuracy to pinpoint geographic coordinates in real-time. A wheel encoder measures traveling speed with a slip-resistant wheel design for precise RPM readings. The Raspberry processes the data, …
Kidney-Targeted Mrna Nanoparticles: Exploration Of The Mrna Loading Capacity Of A Polymeric Mesoscale Platform Employing Various Classes Of Excipients, Arantxa Roach
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Mesoscale nanoparticles (MNPs) for the therapeutic relief of renal ailments can be modulated to deliver various payloads – including biomolecules such as mRNA. In preparing mRNA loaded-MNPs, we observed a point of saturation for mRNA loading of these particles, when aiming to increase the payload per particle. Here, we aimed to circumvent this limitation by incorporating various excipients that interact with mRNA for increased loading. These interactions involved the reduction of mRNA electrostatic repulsion and improving mRNA stability during formulation and release. Thereafter, we tested the encapsulation efficiency of these modified particles and compared it to our original formulation. Further, …
