Identification Of A New Human Disease Gene For Dilated Cardiomyopathy (Dcm), Rutairat Wongong Jan 2024

Identification Of A New Human Disease Gene For Dilated Cardiomyopathy (Dcm), Rutairat Wongong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Pathogenic BAG5 variants recently linked to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) prompt further investigation into phenotypic, mutational, and pathomechanistic aspects. We explored the clinical and molecular characteristics of DCM associated with BAG5 variants, uncovering the consistently severe manifestation of the disease and its impact on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. Analysis involved three siblings affected by DCM, along with their four unaffected siblings and consanguineous parents. Exome and Sanger sequencing identified a novel BAG5 variant, c.444_445delGA (p.Lys149AsnfsTer6), homozygous in affected siblings and heterozygous in parents and unaffected siblings. We generated heterozygous and homozygous Bag5 point mutant knock-in (KI) mice and evaluated …

A Chemistry-Transport Model Study For Source Contributions Of Pm2.5 And Its Implications For Southeast Asia Regional Haze Management Policy, Abdul Wahab

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

PM2.5 pollution is a persistent issue in Southeast Asia. In response, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) launched the Second Hazefree Roadmap (2023-2030) to alleviate this issue. This roadmap can be an important institutional measure to reduce PM2.5 pollution regionally; however, it largely centres on biomass burning and does not comprehensively tackle other sources. This study aims to quantify the contributions of three key sectors—biomass burning, transport, and industry—to PM2.5 pollution. In addition, for the focus of Thailand, the study assesses transboundary PM2.5 pollution coming into Thailand. We employ the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model, a widely used global model …

The Unconscious Mind: Psychoanalysis And Art, Carlie Hoffer Jan 2024

The Unconscious Mind: Psychoanalysis And Art, Carlie Hoffer

MA Theses

The insights brought to society about the unconscious mind can be solely credited to Sigmund Freud’s groundbreaking works that were published in the early 1900’s. Specifically, the concept of the unconscious mind being a driver for human behavior was a unique theory that Freud introduced to a society that had never considered this possibility before this. The realization and acknowledgement of the unconscious mind as relevant to analyzing human behavior including art inspired other scholars and individuals in the field of psychology to explore a more nuanced understanding of human motivations. His novel ideas about human behavior emerged at a …

Growing Up Sustainable? Politics Of Race And Youth In Urbanplan, Copenhagen, Max Ritts, Rebecca Rutt Jan 2024

Growing Up Sustainable? Politics Of Race And Youth In Urbanplan, Copenhagen, Max Ritts, Rebecca Rutt

Geography

This paper considers how racialized youth in Denmark negotiate sustainability amid contexts marked by intersecting forms of economic restructuring, progressive neoliberalism, white ethno-nationalism, and green urban planning. Urbanplan is a low-income, notoriously “troubled” Copenhagen neighborhood where we conducted fieldwork for 7 months (2019-2020) with fifteen male youth, aged 17-21. Using ethnography, policy reviews, and interviews with city social workers, we explore how intimate experiences of nature, group-identity, and place attachment here relate to and depart from the structural forces actively reshaping the neighborhood. Our analysis combines Cindi Katz's intersectional political economy approach with recent work on green gentrification, Critical Utopian …

Do Generations Matter? The Moderating Role Of Media In Adherence To Covid-19 Quarantine Protocol, Luz Suplico Jeong, Reynaldo Bautista Jr., Nelson B. Guillen Jr., Solomon Oluyinka Jan 2024

Do Generations Matter? The Moderating Role Of Media In Adherence To Covid-19 Quarantine Protocol, Luz Suplico Jeong, Reynaldo Bautista Jr., Nelson B. Guillen Jr., Solomon Oluyinka

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study examined the perceptions of Filipinos from Generations X, Y, and Z towards adherence to COVID-19 quarantine protocol. Of the 400 Filipino respondents, 55 were Generation Xers, 86 were from Generation Y, whereas 259 were from Generation Z. Using the theory of planned behavior, the results suggest that there were no significant differences in how Generations X, Y, and Z responded to the quarantine protocol even if media moderated the relationship between self-efficacy and adherence to quarantine protocol. Thus, marketers can use a standardized campaign to encourage Generations X, Y, and Z to adhere to the quarantine protocol.

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Mateusz Blaszczyk Jan 2024

Impossibility Of Artificial Inventors, Mateusz Blaszczyk

Scholarly Works

Recently, the United Kingdom Supreme Court decided that only natural persons can be considered inventors. A year before, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a similar decision. In fact, so have many of the courts all over the world. This Article analyzes these decisions, argues that the courts got it right, and finds that artificial inventorship is at odds with patent law doctrine, theory, and philosophy. This Article challenges the intellectual property (IP) post-humanists, exposing the analytical and normative perils of their argumentation, and recommends against getting rid of the nominally central place of humans …

Using Mechanical Interventions To Enhance Drug Transport To Bone Tumors, Michelle Gelbs Jan 2024

Using Mechanical Interventions To Enhance Drug Transport To Bone Tumors, Michelle Gelbs

Dissertations and Theses

Bone metastasis occurs when cancer cells spread from a primary site to a secondary location in bone. Current treatments for metastatic bone tumors typically involve systemic chemotherapy, bisphosphonates, radiotherapy, or surgery; however, due to morphological changes in the tumor microenvironment and elevated interstitial fluid pressure, tissue penetration of therapeutic agents is often more limited in cancerous tumors compared to normal tissue. Weight-bearing mechanical loading applied to bone, as well as other mechanical stimulations such as vibration, have been shown to cause loading-induced bone deformations that increase convective transport via interstitial fluid flow. We hypothesize that mechanical loading can increase the …

Modulation Of Motor Learning With High-Intensity Transcranial Electric Stimulation, Gavin Hsu Jan 2024

Modulation Of Motor Learning With High-Intensity Transcranial Electric Stimulation, Gavin Hsu

Dissertations and Theses

Research thus far on noninvasive, transcranial electric stimulation have produced mixed results from in vivo human experiments. This work tests the hypothesis that applying higher stimulation intensities would induce intracranial electric fields that more closely match the higher magnitudes used in animal and in vitro studies and subsequently yield more robust effects. As done commonly in the literature, we targeted the motor cortex (M1), specifically in the context of neuroplastic changes taking place during motor learning in healthy adult humans. This work also seeks a better understanding of the neural correlates underlying motor skill learning.

Through multiple large-sample studies, this …

Ecological Factors Influencing The Evolution Of Jamestown Canyon Virus In The Northern United States, Ellie Bourgikos Jan 2024

Ecological Factors Influencing The Evolution Of Jamestown Canyon Virus In The Northern United States, Ellie Bourgikos

Public Health Theses

Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) is a re-emerging arthropod-borne virus in the midwest and northeast United States, infecting mosquitoes and white-tailed deer in a seasonal transmission cycle. Its spread may contribute to thousands of asymptomatic human infections, with 194 total cases of neuroinvasive disease diagnosed. However, very little is known about the virus’s evolutionary history, transmission patterns, and lineage distribution. For this project, we sequenced 689 JCV samples collected from mosquito pools in the northern U.S., increasing the availability of this species’ genomes. Using maximum likelihood estimation on surveillance data, we found that JCV is maintained through the overwintering of single-brood …

Effect Of A Weight-Loss Intervention On Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Among Breast Cancer Survivors In The Lifestyle, Exercise, And Nutrition (Lean) Study, Yiyi Li Jan 2024

Effect Of A Weight-Loss Intervention On Oxidative Stress Biomarkers Among Breast Cancer Survivors In The Lifestyle, Exercise, And Nutrition (Lean) Study, Yiyi Li

Public Health Theses

Introduction: As the number of breast cancer survivors increases, ensuring quality of life during the survivorship period is important. Obesity may induce oxidative stress, which may be relevant mechanistically for adverse health outcomes among breast cancer survivors. Diet, exercise, and weight loss may mitigate oxidative stress, yet few lifestyle trials have investigated if these interventions have impacted oxidative stress. Therefore, we conducted a secondary analysis in a 6-month weight loss randomized controlled trial, the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) study, among breast cancer survivors with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 to evaluate the effect of the intervention …

Emerging Contaminants In Long Island Public Drinking Water, Clare Loughlin Jan 2024

Emerging Contaminants In Long Island Public Drinking Water, Clare Loughlin

Public Health Theses

Thousands of federally unregulated ‘emerging’ contaminants are entering and persisting in our environment, potentially adversely impacting public health. Drinking water is a major exposure pathway for some of these emerging contaminants. In 2020, New York State set maximum contaminant level (MCL) drinking water standards for three emerging contaminants: 1,4-dioxane: 1 ppb, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): 10 ppt, and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS): 10 ppt. Databases of public drinking water exist but generally do not contain comprehensive and ancillary data reported by annual public drinking water reports, or the data may not be aggregated or readily available in a format suitable for data …

Analysis Of Mercury Exposures In The United States Reported To The National Response Center (2018-2022), Abigail E. Mcdonald Jan 2024

Analysis Of Mercury Exposures In The United States Reported To The National Response Center (2018-2022), Abigail E. Mcdonald

Public Health Theses

Introduction

The frequency and extent of environmental elemental mercury exposures in the U.S. are unknown. Due to its marked toxicity, elemental mercury has been phased out of many newer commercial products. However, mercury-containing products are still available, and a variety of religious, cultural, decorative, cosmetic, and illicit uses have been reported in the community. Small quantities of mercury can be highly toxic, and mercury toxicity can present nonspecifically and multi-systemically with the potential to be easily missed. Therefore, it is important to characterize the settings where mercury exposures occur and the extent of such exposures. The overall aim of this …

Indoor Air Pollution In Nomadic Himalayan Highlander Communities, Charles Minicucci Jan 2024

Indoor Air Pollution In Nomadic Himalayan Highlander Communities, Charles Minicucci

Public Health Theses

Indoor air pollution (IAP) from burning solid biomass fuel is a major global health challenge, especially in resource-limited settings without access to electricity or reliable fuel sources. In the Kingdom of Bhutan, where, despite a reported 99% of households having access to electricity, the vast majority of rural households still use biomass fuels for cooking and indoor heating. Given the resource limitations and access challenges associated with Bhutan’s remote highlander and herding communities, few solutions for or details about their exposure to IAP are available – especially during nomadic periods where families may spend months beyond the reach of infrastructure …

Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” Law, officially part of the Parental Rights in Education Act, came into force in 2022. As amended in 2023, this law prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity for children in pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade, and forbids any instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity that is not “age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate” for children in any grade.

From the start, this law was controversial and was challenged in court as a violation of the U.S. Constitution. In March 2024, a settlement agreement was reached in a lawsuit challenging the law, providing clarification on …

Travel Literature. Mircea Eliade’S Occidental View In The Himalayan Journal And The Portugal Journal, Irina Armianu Jan 2024

Travel Literature. Mircea Eliade’S Occidental View In The Himalayan Journal And The Portugal Journal, Irina Armianu

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

This article retraces Mircea Eliade’s mystical travel through the Himalayas as shown in his Himalayan Journal and his struggle to survive as a writer under the weight of brutal historical events in his Portugal Journal. The two travel journals reveal the influence of geographical and historical elements on Eliade's mystical writing. A deeper analysis of these journals is necessary to link travel genre to mystical thought. The next pages will show (1) how these journals fit into the category of existential travel, as theorized by Erik Cohen in "The Phenomenology of Tourist Experiences" (179-201), (2) Eliade’s own transcendence of his …

Maps As Rhetorical Tools Of Colonial Power And Alternative Cartographies: The Americas’ Cartographic Invention, Eda Özyeşilpınar

Faculty Publications – English

This essay focuses on two historical maps as rhetorical artifacts: The Piri Reis Map of 1513 produced by the Turkish admiral Piri Reis in 1513, the Reis map, and the Map of the Island of Cuba and Surrounding Territories produced by the Cuban geographer, historian, and educator José María de la Torre y de la Torre in 1841, the de la Torre map. The Reis map demonstrates the colonial logic of Americas’ cartographic invention while the de la Torre Map is an alternative cartographic artifact disrupting the Reis map’s celebratory discourse and the settler-colonial legacy of the world heritage memory.

Mechanisms For Regenerative Intervertebral Disc Healing During Early Growth In Mice, Danielle N. D'Erminio Jan 2024

Mechanisms For Regenerative Intervertebral Disc Healing During Early Growth In Mice, Danielle N. D'Erminio

Dissertations and Theses

Annulus Fibrosus (AF) defects of intervertebral discs (IVDs) cause painful disability, for example when herniated tissue compresses against adjacent nerves. Discectomy, the current standard of treatment to address herniation, does not repair AF defects and can result in re-herniation and recurrent pain. As such there is a need for improved AF repair strategies. It has previously been established that neonatal mice functionally regenerate following severe AF injury providing a model of successful innate AF repair processes that contrasts the poor healing of adult mice. This dissertation focuses on identifying mechanisms of AF regenerative healing in neonatal mice subjected to severe …

Understand The Structure-Water-Responsive Relationship By Engineering Silk Materials, Yeojin Jung Jan 2024

Understand The Structure-Water-Responsive Relationship By Engineering Silk Materials, Yeojin Jung

Dissertations and Theses

Water-responsive (WR) materials mechanically swell and shrink in response to changes in relative humidity, and they have demonstrated the capability to exert higher actuation energy than conventional actuators and artificial muscles. As a result, WR materials have recently gained attention as potential high-energy actuating components for engineering applications. Despite the growing interest in this emerging category of WR materials, the fundamental WR mechanism of their significant performance is still not fully understood, limiting the ability to rationally design engineered systems. This dissertation presents three approaches for understanding the water-responsiveness of materials by engineering Bombyx (B.) mori silkworm silk protein. First, …

Exploring Spatial Operations Of Distractor Suppression In The Sense Of Touch, Nicole A. Serino Jan 2024

Exploring Spatial Operations Of Distractor Suppression In The Sense Of Touch, Nicole A. Serino

Dissertations and Theses

The ability to select sensory information in our environment is key to facilitating goal-directed actions. Sensory selection mechanisms are prevalent in all sensory modalities, and can be implemented by enhancing information at the relevant location and/or suppressing neural information outside the focus of attention (a mechanism known as distractor suppression). Although we have a decent understanding of how the brain enhances information within the focus of attention, less is known about the mechanisms that mediate suppression of distractors, especially in sensory modalities outside vision. In this study, we conducted a series of behavioral experiments to investigate the spatial flexibility of …
