Understanding the genetic diversity of honey bees in North America provides valuable insight into the conservation, ecology, and evolution of this economically important insect. Here, we characterized the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variation in populations of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., in Oklahoma by sequencing a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI-COII) intergenic region. The samples were primarily of feral origin (n = 164), as well as from 24 managed colonies. Samples were obtained from 50 of Oklahoma's 77 counties, which represented six distinct ecoregions. Of the 188 colonies sampled,19 distinct haplotypes were observed, which included: A (African) …

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide and has been responsible for millions of deaths. However, developing a satisfactory smart multifunctional material combining different strategies to kill cancer cells poses a challenge. This work aims at filling this gap by developing a composite material for cancer treatment through hyperthermia and drug release. With this purpose, magnetic nanoparticles were coated with a polymer matrix consisting of poly (L-co-D,L lactic acid-co-trimethylene carbonate) and a poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction confirmed magnetite to be the only iron oxide in the sample. Cytotoxicity …

Dance Like Everyone Is Watching: Why Tiktok Choreography And Copyright Aren't In Sync, Roseanne Planker
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The note argues that viral dances on platforms like TikTok should not be protected under the U.S. Copyright Act due to their ephemeral nature, social functionality, and the incompatibility of copyright's exclusivity with the viral dissemination process. It advocates for statutory reforms to ensure fair compensation and attribution for creators, proposing that platforms like TikTok be held accountable for these protections, similar to the EU's Copyright Directive. The analysis emphasizes the need for new legal frameworks to address the unique challenges of viral choreography, balancing artistic progress and creator rights.
