The Effect Of Mating Pheromone 2,6-Dichlorophenol On Gene Expression In Male Lone Star Ticks (Amblyomma Americanum), Mitchell E. Dyen

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) are tick species known for their generalist feeding habits, pursuing blood meals with little preference for specific host species. They are found in the southern and midwestern United States but have been rapidly expanding northward due to climate change and white-tailed deer population expansion. Since they are a zoonotic disease vector, their increased abundance has caused the concurrent increased prevalence of a variety of tick-borne illnesses such as tularemia, heartland virus disease, alpha-gal syndrome, ehrlichiosis, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), which effect both humans and animals alike. This increased prevalence of tick-borne …

Students Summer in Oncology at Anderson Research (SOAR) 2024

This study evaluated the efficacy of liposomal nanoparticles (LNPs) in delivering Wnt/β-catenin-inhibiting mIR-124 plasmids to melanomas. In vitro, LNPs with mIR-124 were applied to B16N2 melanoma cells. In vivo, LNPs were injected into B16N2 tumors in mice. Delivery success was confirmed via flow cytometry and RT-PCR, assessing GFP expression, tumor transition markers, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Overall, the findings suggested that LNP-mediated delivery of Wnt/β-catenin inhibitors holds promise as a therapeutic strategy for melanoma, with trends indicating a reversal of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and slowed melanoma progression.

Noncompete Law, The Uniform Act, And The Ftc Proposed Rule, Stewart J. Schwab

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

This Article summarizes the Uniform Restrictive Employment Agreement Act and compares it to the proposed Federal Trade Commission rule that bans noncompete agreements. The Uniform Act regulates the whole family of restrictive employment agreements, including noncompetes but also confidentiality agreements, nonsolicitation agreements, no-recruit agreements, payment-for-competition agreements, and training-repayment agreements. By contrast, the FTC rule covers only noncompete agreements and their functional equivalents. Both the Uniform Act and the FTC rule cover all workers, including employees and independent contractors. While the FTC rule bans noncompetes for all workers, the Uniform Act bans agreements for low-wage workers (defined as those earning less …
