Surveyor: Scratching For A Wild Moon, Nina Grigg Jan 2024

Surveyor: Scratching For A Wild Moon, Nina Grigg

Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award

At the dawn of the space race, neither the moon as a destination nor man’s physical presence there were foregone conclusions. In order to get to that all important "first step," NASA had to dissect the Moon as a romantic symbol into concrete ground that space boots could tread on. Identifying these sites on a terrain so uniquely hostile to human habitation required remote exploration mediated by totally encapsulating technology. However, in the attempts of scientists and engineers to objectively explore the lunar wilderness, they unintentionally transformed it into an extension of the urban landscape. Once only conceivable as a …

Music Education Within An Autism Support Classroom: Building Community And Educational Skills, Emma Lamberti Jan 2024

Music Education Within An Autism Support Classroom: Building Community And Educational Skills, Emma Lamberti

Honors Theses

The purpose of this action research study was to explore how music education might provide a sense of community, develop educational skills, and discuss general best practices for teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a middle school autism support classroom. To examine community, educational skills, and best practices, this study completed two cycles of action research. The curriculum in Cycle 1 consisted of typical music lessons for a general music classroom. Interviews with teachers and students, video observations, and researcher reflections after each lesson were used to inform the development of Cycle 2. Cycle 2 retained the overall …

Psychological Well-Being And Music Among Children, Elle Chrampanis Jan 2024

Psychological Well-Being And Music Among Children, Elle Chrampanis

Honors Theses

The purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore how music supports kindergarteners’ well-being in an elementary music classroom through the lens of PERMA, a framework for well-being developed by Martin Seligman. PERMA stands for positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. An additional goal was to see how applicable this framework was to kindergarteners. Accordingly, a five-week music program was developed and taught at a local elementary school. A typical elementary music curriculum was developed consisting of lessons that included a welcome song, a rhythm activity, a musical storybook, the sequential learning of a song, and a goodbye …

Associations Between Loneliness And Social Anxiety: Predictors Of Life-Satisfaction In Young Adults, Desiree Groce Jan 2024

Associations Between Loneliness And Social Anxiety: Predictors Of Life-Satisfaction In Young Adults, Desiree Groce

Honors Theses

This research builds upon current findings pertaining to life-satisfaction. Loneliness, related to inadequate well-being, has been shown to negatively affect various domains of one's life. Moreover, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) has negative consequences that have been shown to affect the quality of one's well-being. The present research conducted two studies to elucidate the connection between loneliness and SAD as potential predictors of life-satisfaction. The first study sought to clarify the relationship between social and emotional loneliness and life-satisfaction. It was predicted that lower social loneliness scores will predict higher life-satisfaction scores, and lower emotional loneliness scores will predict higher life-satisfaction …

Investigation Of The Causative Agent Of Canine Leproid Granuloma Infection Cases In The Northeastern United States, Nicole J. Marcotte

Honors Theses and Capstones

Canine leproid granuloma syndrome (CLGS) is a form of disease in dogs of many breeds that is characterized by a skin infection in the subcutis and/or dermis. The granulomas that form as a result of infection are typically non pruritic, alopecic, raised, and firm. These mass-like granulomas can ulcerate, causing further infection beneath the skin surface, and are present in areas of the body such as the ears, head, neck, and extremities. CLGS has been known to infect dogs of different breeds and ages, but has most commonly been reported to infect shorthaired, large sized breeds. This disease is suspected …

Impact Of Hdac Inhibitors On The Efficiency Of Cardiomyocyte Differentiation, Lauren Mary Sargent Jan 2024

Impact Of Hdac Inhibitors On The Efficiency Of Cardiomyocyte Differentiation, Lauren Mary Sargent

Honors Theses and Capstones

Heart disease and injury is the leading cause of death worldwide, with much of its severity caused by the low regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes (CMs). One of the strategies to counteract the poor regeneration of CMs is the production of CMs via differentiating stem cells. However, the low efficiency of obtaining CMs from stem cells is an issue because there are numerous inconsistencies in the process. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been researched as ways to increase efficiency of CM differentiation by increasing histone acetylation, and thereby allowing differentiation to occur more efficiently. In this study, the HDAC inhibitor, trichostatin …

Thin Places: A Six Week Prayer Guide For Experiencing God In Your Everyday, Keith Riley

Doctor of Ministry

My NPO statement is that at Menlo Church, Menlo Park Campus there is a lack of applied knowledge for adults in how to listen to God. My ministry context is at Menlo Church which is a historic presbyterian church set in the highly educated and affluent town of Menlo Park, which is in the San Francisco Bay Area. I began working at Menlo Church in 2019 and found there was a general intellectual knowledge of prayer and spiritual formation. This intellectual knowledge of spiritual formation has been influenced by leadership of John Ortberg as senior pastor, and other voices such …

Tiktok, Copyright, And Justice, Brittany Morris

Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet

In 2019, the Copyright Office refused registration for two "dances" that were highly recognizable and traceable to specific individuals. The "Carlton" was refused because it is a "simple routine that is not registrable as a choreographic work." The "Milly Rock" was also refused registration on the same grounds. Epic Games was selling the dances as an add-on to its wildly popular video game, Fortnite, which primarily derives profits from microtransactions. The app TikTok is experiencing an analogous problem. In July 2021, Black Creators were on strike from the app.1 They alleged that the original dances they created for the app …

The Professionalized Violence Of Prosecutorial Power And Misconduct, Bina Ahmad Jan 2024

The Professionalized Violence Of Prosecutorial Power And Misconduct, Bina Ahmad

City University of New York Law Review

The U.S. legal system is a colonizer’s system constructed to uphold power and protect the powerful. For radical lawyers, it is the language of power we need to speak and understand to protect ourselves and our communities from this violence. As law enforcement actors, prosecutors are arguably the most powerful actors in our criminal legal system, able to ruin people’s lives at will and with absolute immunity to protect them from any accountability for any misconduct. Even with professional attorney ethics rules and state bar grievance committees tasked with holding attorneys to these ethics rules, prosecutors are still rarely disciplined. …

Forecasting Pitch Response Of Floating Offshorewind Turbines With A Deep Learning Model, Mohammad Barooni, Deniz Velioglu Sogut

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Student Publications

The design and optimization of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) pose significant challenges, stemming from the complex interplay among aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, structural dynamics, and control systems. In this context, this study introduces an innovative method for forecasting the dynamic behavior of FOWTs under various conditions by merging Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network. This model outperforms traditional numerical models by delivering precise and efficient predictions of dynamic FOWT responses. It adeptly handles computational complexities and reduces processing duration, while maintaining flexibility and effectively managing nonlinear dynamics. The model’s prowess is showcased through an analysis of …

Level Up! Priming Hobbyist Political Identity Using Survey Experiment, Pavel Bačovský Jan 2024

Level Up! Priming Hobbyist Political Identity Using Survey Experiment, Pavel Bačovský

All Faculty Scholarship

Recent research suggests that a strong identity attachment to leisure activity affects the hobbyists' political preferences and behavior. This paper further evaluates the claim that hobbyists - in this case, gamers - react differently to political stimuli that directly involve their hobby of choice. Using original survey experiment data, this paper shows that gamers become more interested in foreign trade policy when presented in the context of video games. This finding indicates that even seemingly apolitical identities matter in framing political behavior. Aspects of hobbyist identities seep into political attitudes, even if preferences in the strictest meaning of the word …

Employers And The Privatization Of Public Health, Sharona Hoffman Jan 2024

Employers And The Privatization Of Public Health, Sharona Hoffman

Faculty Publications

This Article focuses on the role of employers in public health and argues that they constitute increasingly important actors in the U.S. public health arena. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a series of judicial decisions and newly enacted statutes enfeebled the public health powers of the federal and state governments. In a 2023 statement, Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch clearly articulated his antagonism towards government-initiated COVID-19 interventions, describing them as “the greatest intrusions on civil liberties in the peacetime history of this country.” All too many share his views.

Employers may be highly motivated to safeguard their workers’ …

Consent And Disagreement, Aditi Bagchi Jan 2024

Consent And Disagreement, Aditi Bagchi

Faculty Scholarship

Contracts purport to settle rights and obligations between parties. The fact that parties have consented to a given set of terms seems to hold the promise of preempting conflict about those terms after the fact. But contract gives rise to disputes about consent itself. Many disputes about implied conditions, for example, are best understood as disagreements about the scope of consent.

This article identifies several moral ambiguities in the concept of concept. We not only disagree about the analytic merits of competing conceptions among ourselves but, even as individuals, we tend not to endorse and consistently apply a single version …

Vertical And Horizontal Dimensions Of The Rule Of Law, Brian Z. Tamanaha Jan 2024

Vertical And Horizontal Dimensions Of The Rule Of Law, Brian Z. Tamanaha

Emory Law Journal

Scholarly discussions about the rule of law have become a cacophony of disagreement. The more that is written about the topic, it seems, the less that we know. Thus, bringing clarity to basic issues is essential. This Essay draws out the implications of a conceptual distinction between the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the rule of law at domestic and international levels. The vertical dimension—which focuses on liberty and restraints on arbitrary government power—examines the top-down relationship between government officials and private actors in relation to how the ruling regime treats citizens and entities on matters of interest to the …

Stormwater Infrastructure As A Socio-Ecological System: The Case Of Aaran’S Pond, Cya Moore, Serena A. Echols, E. Christian Wells

Weather, Climate, and Society REU

This poster examines stormwater ponds as complex adaptive ecosystems in the urban environment, in which community residents and other stakeholders are integral components. Stormwater ponds are important forms of green infrastructure used to control flooding in the Tampa Bay area. These ponds also can help mitigate the flow of nutrients into the bay, which can cause harmful algal blooms that impact people and marine life. With increasing frequency and intensity of flooding events due to climate change, some stormwater ponds, such as Aaran’s Pond in the University Area Community near the USF Tampa campus, are becoming less effective at flood …

A Foundational Research Project For Future Collaboration Between Indigenous Communities And Small Museums: A Case Study Of Twenty-Five Beaded Bags, Dyana Gracia

All Master's Theses

Small museums are ethically obligated to reconnect collections to creator communities, even with the added difficulty of fewer resources. This thesis has developed and implemented a model for mutually beneficial and collaborative relationships between creator communities and small museums with the example of the Central Washington University Museum of Culture and Environment (MCE) and Indigenous communities of the Columbia Plateau, namely the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation, in the Pacific Northwest relating to twenty-five beaded bags held in possession of the MCE. This thesis uses ethnographic interview methods, provenance research, and literature review to create a cultural …

Cooperative Bargaining During Mate Competition: A Test In Male Guppies, Maddisen Bell Jan 2024

Cooperative Bargaining During Mate Competition: A Test In Male Guppies, Maddisen Bell

All Master's Theses

Competition for mating opportunities among individuals of the same sex is a well-documented phenomenon, yet the extent of cooperation in such contexts remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of cooperative bargaining between two males in scenarios of limited and equal female availability, using non-wild descendants of the Trinidad guppy (Poecilia reticulata) as a model species. Four experimental trials assessed courtship length (in seconds) and male-female and male-male interactions, including courtship and aggressive behaviors based on previous research (Magurran et al., 1991). The analysis included the examination of the duration of courtship, the number of aggressive …
