Tribal Law: It's Not That Scary, Adam Crepelle Jan 2024

Tribal Law: It's Not That Scary, Adam Crepelle

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Tribal law is often presented in a negative light. Indeed, the Supreme Court's skepticism about tribal law has resulted in severe limitations on tribal jurisdiction. This Article challenges perceptions of tribal law by surveying tribal law. While tribal law does rely on tribal customs, tribal law is largely consistent with mainstream American law. Tribal laws are often modeled on state codes or the Restatement.

This Article contends tribal law mirrors western law for two primary reasons-efficiency and legitimacy. Regarding efficiency, borrowing a western law is easier than creating a law from scratch; plus, many laws are common across cultures. A …

Enhancing Uptake Capability Of Green Carbon Black Recycled From Scrap Tires For Water Purification, Jiho Choi, Jihyun Kang, Huiseong Yang, Sangin Yoon, Jun-Hyun Kim, Hyun-Ho Park

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

This study reports on the highly simple fabrication of green carbon black (GCB) generated from scrap tires with acetic acid to improve the adsorption efficiency for water purification, which is thoroughly compared with conventional carbon black (CB) obtained from petrochemicals. Unlike traditional modification processes with strong acids or bases, the introduction of a relatively mild acid readily allowed for the effective modification of GCB to increase the uptake capability of metal ions and toxic organic dyes to serve as effective adsorbents. The morphological features and thermal decomposition patterns were examined by electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The surface functional …

Death And Discretion: Some Thoughts On Living, Barry Sullivan Jan 2024

Death And Discretion: Some Thoughts On Living, Barry Sullivan

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Fifty years ago, James Boyd White inspired a quiet revolution in the world of legal studies. He encouraged lawyers to think more deeply about questions of law and justice by drawing upon the humanities, which provided sources and methods well beyond those that the legal academy then recognized as legitimate ways of thinking and talking about law. Among other things, Professor White insisted that there was a morality to authentic legal argument and decision making that required a close and engaged reading of texts, an understanding of community, and an openness to being persuaded by others. It was a courageous …

An Integrative Somatic Art Therapy Approach: Emdr & Body-Based Practices For Traumatic Stress, Alexis Sorbara Jan 2024

An Integrative Somatic Art Therapy Approach: Emdr & Body-Based Practices For Traumatic Stress, Alexis Sorbara

Art Therapy | Doctoral Dissertations

This research project used a mixed method, within subject design to explore how trauma-informed somatic art therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy impacts symptoms of trauma and burnout. There is limited qualitative research on integrating art therapy with EMDR in a group setting. Art therapy can act as a container, or safe holding environment (Winnicott, 1971) for the limitations of EMDR therapy. This research addressed the implications of integrating art therapy and EMDR therapy as a trauma treatment for healthcare professionals. This research study followed the eight phases of EMDR treatment, using a combination of resourcing, a series …

Io Bacce!: Ambiguity, Liminality, And The Potential For Self-Formation In Bacchus Explored By Carracci, Caravaggio, And Velázquez, Anna Gliwski Jan 2024

Io Bacce!: Ambiguity, Liminality, And The Potential For Self-Formation In Bacchus Explored By Carracci, Caravaggio, And Velázquez, Anna Gliwski

Theses & ETDs

The god Bacchus has been a popular figure in art since antiquity. In the wake of declining interest in the ancient world during the Late Renaissance, he was rendered a simplistic visualization of drunkenness rather than the multifaceted character he has the potential to be. In this thesis, I draw upon depictions of Bacchus by three Baroque artists: four works by Annibale Carracci, Caravaggio’s Young Sick Bacchus and the Uffizi Bacchus, as well as Velázquez’s Los Borrachos. These paintings display alternative and more complex approaches to the god. Bacchus possesses a level of ambiguity which lends itself to myriad creative …

Exploring Storytelling In Dance: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Choreography, Sophia Jones Jan 2024

Exploring Storytelling In Dance: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Choreography, Sophia Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Storytelling in dance poses a subjective challenge. The lack of concrete guidelines for choreography can create a discrepancy between what is considered successful dance across different genres. This research aims to address this issue by examining the role of space and energy in storytelling and their intersections through genres such as tap, modern, and dance film. Through an analysis of my choreographic works including 777, Memento Mori, Vivid Connections, and Portrait, this study investigates how common choreographic elements contribute to narrative effectiveness.

This study explores the utilization of compositional tools and their application across various genres to convey each piece’s …

Should Crop Sequences In Western Australia Include More Lupins?, Christophe D'Abbadie, Sud Kharel, Ross Kingwell, Amir Abadi Ghadim

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an increasing priority for Australian grain producers. Could substituting lupins for canola, as a rotational break crop, enable farmers to reduce their emissions by less use of nitrogenous fertilisers?

Aim

This study aims to identify if replacing canola with lupins in rotations at a range of locations in Western Australia’s grainbelt is environmentally and economically attractive.

Methods.

Bio-economic simulation modelling is used to examine the gross margins and emissions associated with replacement of canola by lupins at 14 locations in the grainbelt of Western Australia in variousland use sequences.

Key results

Replacing canola with lupins …

Health Status Changes After Stenting For Stroke Prevention In Carotid Artery Stenosis, Jonathan Kluger

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Clinical trials for carotid artery stenosis treatments have focused primarily on mortality, stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI), but less is known about the effects of carotid revascularization on health status. Our three aims were (1) to establish minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) as thresholds for meaningful patient-reported clinical improvement for those undergoing transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TF- CAS), (2) to study the distribution of changes in health status 30 days after TF-CAS, and (3) to describe the clinical characteristics of patients who improved significantly after treatment. Methods: Using the Stenting and Angioplasty with Protection in Patients at High Risk for …

“Teen Health” Empowers Informed Contraception Decision-Making In Adolescents And Young Adults, Christina Lepore Jan 2024

“Teen Health” Empowers Informed Contraception Decision-Making In Adolescents And Young Adults, Christina Lepore

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), here defined as aged 13-25 years, face uniquechallenges in accessing sexual and reproductive health information. Interactive internet resources provide a free, private and personalized opportunity to help AYAs make informed contraception choices. We designed an original website called “Teen Health” to provide age-appropriate and evidence-based SRH education to AYAs, as well as an interactive contraception education tool (CET). We introduced “Teen Health” to AYAs in a clinical setting and observed trends in contraception preference after website exposure. We hypothesized that “Teen Health” would support informed contraception decision-making.

A convenience sample of AYAs were recruited from …

Advances In Keratin 17 As A Cancer Biomarker: A Systematic Review, Robert Tseng Jan 2024

Advances In Keratin 17 As A Cancer Biomarker: A Systematic Review, Robert Tseng

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: In an era where tumor heterogeneity leads to widely variable cancer treatment outcomes, there is an unmet need for biomarkers that can characterize tumor subtypes, inform prognosis, and guide clinical decision-making for therapy. As an oncofetal monofilament that is only expressed in embryonic and cancer tissue, keratin 17 (K17) has been demonstrated as an effective biomarker in a wide variety of cancer types, detection methods, and clinical purposes. In order to guide and inform future investigations on K17, we performed a systematic review of clinical studies assessing the effectiveness of K17 as a cancer biomarker.

Methods: We performed a …
