Indigenous Sovereignties In The Americas [Review Of The Book Indigenous Borderlands: Native Agency, Resilience, And Power In The Americas, By J. Rivaya-Martinez]., Miller S. Wright
History Faculty Publications
[First paragraph] Correcting the continued erasure and marginalization of Native American and Indigenous peoples as historical actors unites the essays of Indigenous Borderlands: Native Agency, Resilience, and Power in the Americas, edited by Joaquín Rivaya-Martínez. Incorporating multidisciplinary approaches, the edited collection consists of thirteen essays, written by twelve scholars, analyzing “Indigenous agency, adaptiveness, resilience, sovereignty, and power,” across the Americas from precontact with Europeans and Africans to the twentieth century (pp. 1-2). The collection examines how Indigenous peoples adapted to European colonization to protect and maintain their sovereignty, cultures, and territories and, in so doing, shaped the creation of …

Arousal Patterns, Fungal Loads, And Wing Damage In A Surviving Population Of Little Brown Bats (Myotis Lucifugus), Brooke A. Daly
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) at Tippy Dam in Michigan have shown resilience to white-nose syndrome (WNS), which is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. This study evaluated the impact of environment (temperature and moisture), pathogen virulence, and host susceptibility on survival. Host response was assessed using temperature-sensitive radio transmitters (n = 37) and ultraviolet photography (n = 57), while fungal load (n = 56) was evaluated through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). High autumn temperatures (>10°C) favored growth of the fungus, while mid-hibernation temperature (3.2°C) was unfavorable. The mean torpor bout length (TBL) …
Animating A Statutory Right: Access To Counsel For Noncitizens In Reasonable Fear Review, Reese Wilking
Animating A Statutory Right: Access To Counsel For Noncitizens In Reasonable Fear Review, Reese Wilking
Emory Law Journal
When a noncitizen in an expedited removal proceeding has a colorable claim to delay their deportation for fear of torture in their home country, a special review process occurs. Certain noncitizens face an especially stringent procedure—the reasonable fear review hearing, where a noncitizen must navigate a complex legal argument before an immigration judge to show that they meet specific statutory and regulatory criteria for relief from or delay of deportation. Congress has specified that noncitizens are entitled to access counsel at this reasonable fear review hearing; yet, all too often, the hearing takes place without attorneys present who were already …

This work sought to further understand the benefits and consequences of play in early childhood settings. Benefits included brain development stimulation, improvement in intelligence, a boost in personal creative thinking, bolstered communication skills and social emotional regulation abilities, better social competence, improved physical and mental health, increased problem solving skills, and strengthened relationships. Varying types of play provide valuable data points as to the critical importance of play in the development of young children. Research continues to suggest a strong link between the efficacy of purposeful play and the correlating benefits of children’s growth and development in key areas. These …
Unleashing Wellness: Exploring The Impact Of Pet Therapy On Anxiety Reduction, Quality Of Life, And Treatment Adherence In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Karina Brouwer
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Pet therapy is a complementary type of therapeutics in which a person and animal have a guided interaction with the purpose of helping someone cope with physical and/or mental illness. Animal-assisted therapy is used in numerous settings and has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and decrease anxiety and depression (Husson University, 2022). In particular, pediatric oncology patients have enormous amounts of stress in their lives, which leads to increased anxiety and decreased quality of life (Children's Cancer Cause, 2023). While evidence shows that integrating pet therapy in pediatric oncology patients produces significant benefits on …
Reassessing Pet Allergy Prevention In Children Through Early Pet Exposure In Toddlerhood, Reynaldo A. Adalin Iii
Reassessing Pet Allergy Prevention In Children Through Early Pet Exposure In Toddlerhood, Reynaldo A. Adalin Iii
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Background: Allergies are among children's most common health issues growing up, impacting them daily and into adulthood. Among these allergies, pet allergies have become increasingly common with children around the globe developing sensitization to common household pets such as cats and dogs. Several factors cause pet allergies, including proteins found in an animal's skin, saliva, urine, and dander, which are the most problematic due to their ability to remain airborne for a prolonged period. Objective: To examine the relationship between early exposure to pets during toddlerhood versus later exposure at school age and the development of pet allergies. By studying …
A Critical Assessment Of The First Step Act's Recidivism-Reduction Measures, Raquel Wilson
A Critical Assessment Of The First Step Act's Recidivism-Reduction Measures, Raquel Wilson
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The First Step Act of 2018 (“FSA”) is the most impactful federal sentencing reform of the past 40 years. While the Act represents a partial resurgence of the rehabilitative model of imprisonment, which had fallen out of favor decades before, it also represents a missed opportunity to fully integrate evidence-based rehabilitation programs for those offenders who pose the greatest risks to public safety.
The public has a strong interest in reducing recidivism, particularly among violent offenders, most of whom will be released from federal prison eventually. The FSA incentivizes participation in evidence-based, recidivism-reducing programs offered by the Bureau of Prisons …

Contextualizing George Orwell: How Orwell's Life Experiences Influenced His Most Famous Novels, Jonah Ridgley
Contextualizing George Orwell: How Orwell's Life Experiences Influenced His Most Famous Novels, Jonah Ridgley
History and Political Science | Senior Theses
George Orwell is one of the most celebrated authors of the 20th century. His most famous novels, Animal Farm and 1984, serve as insightful commentaries on the horrors of totalitarianism. These two books have been studied extensively and incorporated into public and political discourse since his death in 1950. Contemporary right-wing and left-wing leaders and pundits both continue to reference the concepts and language in Orwell’s books to support their respective stances on various issues. Additionally, they have been presented to high schoolers and college students as simplified anti-communist novels or pro-capitalist propaganda during the Cold War. However, Orwell’s work …
The Ownership Of Potato Boy: A Discussion On Ai And Copyright, James Thibeault
The Ownership Of Potato Boy: A Discussion On Ai And Copyright, James Thibeault
Library Publications
Surprisingly, the copyright status of generative AI works is pretty straight forward in the US: no one owns the copyright. According to the United States Copyright Office (2023), “copyright can protect only material that is the product of human creativity. Most fundamentally, the term ‘author,’ which is used in both the Constitution and the Copyright Act, excludes non-humans.” This concept is not new as previous court cases had already established this ruling. In the 1884 court case Burrow-Giles Lithographic Company v. Sarony, the defendant made copies of a photograph and claimed the author held no copyright since a machine, a …

How European Human Rights Law Will Reshape U.S. Business, Rachel Chambers, David Birchall
How European Human Rights Law Will Reshape U.S. Business, Rachel Chambers, David Birchall
UC Law Business Journal
In recent years several European states have enacted human rights due diligence laws, culminating in the imminent EU-wide Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of these laws and explores their potential impact on U.S. businesses. Human rights due diligence emerges from the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (2011) and was originally conceived as a voluntary means by which corporations could demonstrate that they proactively monitor and manage potential human rights abuses within their corporate group and supply chains. Since 2017, European states have begun enacting binding human rights due diligence laws. …
The Effect Of Dsk1 And Kic1 Kinase Deletions On Cdr-2-Gfp Localization In Fission Yeast, Kelsey Shintaku
The Effect Of Dsk1 And Kic1 Kinase Deletions On Cdr-2-Gfp Localization In Fission Yeast, Kelsey Shintaku
Pitzer Senior Theses
S. pombe, or fission yeast, is a model organism that has been critical in our understanding of cell division, offering potential insights into cancer. Dsk1 and Kic1 are two important kinases that affect cell division. Dsk1 regulates splicing, the cellular localization of SR proteins, and the metaphase-to-anaphase transition. Kic1 is a dual-specificity kinase that plays a role in the regulation of splicing, formation of the cell and septal wall, and cytokinesis. The proteins through which the kinases impact cell division are still not well understood. Previous research has shown that the deletion of these kinases affects the growth of the …
The Effects Of Seaweed Farming On Local Ecosystems In The United States, Reid Cohen
The Effects Of Seaweed Farming On Local Ecosystems In The United States, Reid Cohen
Pitzer Senior Theses
In my thesis, I explore how seaweed farming contributes to the regeneration of marine ecosystems, supports biodiversity, and assists in harmful nutrient removal. Seaweed farming is a relatively unexplored industry in the United States with huge carbon capturing potential. Seaweed farming poses a significant opportunity for a project that has the potential to sequester carbon, increase biodiversity, protect coastal ecosystems, naturally clean water, provide biofuel capabilities, substitute as livestock fodder which then decreases methane emissions, along with many more benefits. Kelp supports biodiversity in marine ecosystems and provides essential habitats for various species. The seaweed farming industry holds profound potential …
Paths To Belonging: How Chinese Parachute Kids Construct Identity Across Borders, Huiying Chen
Paths To Belonging: How Chinese Parachute Kids Construct Identity Across Borders, Huiying Chen
Pitzer Senior Theses
Chinese parachute kids, defined as unaccompanied minor who study in foreign countries alone while their parents remain in China, represent a unique segment of international students. This research specifically focusing on Chinese parachute kids studying in the U.S. Grounded in interviews with nineteen individuals who were once parachute kids, this study challenges the popular view that all international students have monolithic experiences especially within the assimilationist framework.
I propose a typology of three orientations (the heritage, the instrumental, and the global) and argue that Chinese parachute kids’ orientation determines their sense of belonging and their approaches to embeddedness in American educational …
Corporate Influence At Public Universities: Upholding The Conventional Agricultural Paradigm, Michaela Jones
Corporate Influence At Public Universities: Upholding The Conventional Agricultural Paradigm, Michaela Jones
Pitzer Senior Theses
The agriculture sector is responsible for feeding the planet but faces many growing threats as climate change worsens. Conventional agriculture practices, which are widespread, are both contributing to climate change and likely to become less feasible in future years. Regenerative agriculture provides a possible path forward but is not widely studied at public and land grant universities where much agricultural research takes place, in part because of significant corporate influence at these schools. Corporate influence can take many forms, and can include research funding by individual companies or industry groups, philanthropic giving in the form of buildings, research centers, and …
The Ecological Underpinnings Of Famine: Irish Agriculture And Land Use Under British Colonialism, 1534-1852, Wyatt Bandy-Page
The Ecological Underpinnings Of Famine: Irish Agriculture And Land Use Under British Colonialism, 1534-1852, Wyatt Bandy-Page
Pitzer Senior Theses
Ireland’s Great Hunger (1845-52) cannot be reduced to merely potatoes and blight. This thesis approaches the Great Hunger in the context of agricultural and land use changes under British colonialism (1534-1852). Across seven centuries, successive waves of settlers seized the most productive lands, eventually giving rise to a series of plantation schemes designed to maximize the extraction of Irish human and natural capital. Land use transformations under colonial rule severely restricted Gaelic foodways and kept the Irish laboring classes at bare subsistence levels, while the produce of Irish plantations fueled English economic development. Following the onset of blight in 1845, …
How Does The Transition From A Subject-Based Allocation Fund Structure To A One-Pot Allocation Fund Structure Impact Librarian Spending And Attitudes Toward Spending?: One Libraries' Experience With A One-Pot Allocation Approach For One-Time Acquisitions Spending, Anne Larrivee
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Every fiscal year, academic libraries must decide how to fairly allocate funds for their collection of one-time materials. A common approach is to divide these one-time funds between subject areas based on historic, quantitative, or expressed needs. A less mainstream approach is to combine all these funds into a single source of funds for one-time purchases. This article examines librarian response after transitioning from a subject-based allocation to a one-pot allocation approach for its one-time acquisitions. Methods of expenditure analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to assess the approach's effectiveness and librarian attitudes. The results of this study provide a …

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The oral traditions and histories of a people’s belief systems are one means by which the relationships between a people and their environment are embodied. Environmental aspects of a people’s belief system are reflected in their use of their habited space(s) because beliefs help structure actions. Ergo, an examination of a people’s oral traditions and histories has the potential to provide valuable insight to the archeological record of the places potentially occupied by their ancestors or close relatives. Investigation of this aspect of archeology is a relatively new pursuit and is almost completely unexplored in Minnesota. The relationship between the …

Building the resilience of a dynamic environment is a difficult task, but coastal areas shaped by natural formations have existing resilience points. This article attempts to find traces of elements that identify points of resilience. The method applied in this effort is the mapping method. In line with this method, it is aimed to investigate the traces of ecology nodes by overlapping the map information of the place with different elements with axonometric graphical expression. The Gulf of Saros, which is on the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea, was selected as the sample area of the study. The geographical …
Pristine Or Perilous? Evaluating The Risks Of Cyanotoxin Production, Exposure, And Accumulation In Gye Lakes, Katherine Low
Pristine Or Perilous? Evaluating The Risks Of Cyanotoxin Production, Exposure, And Accumulation In Gye Lakes, Katherine Low
Doctoral Dissertations
Toxins produced by cyanobacteria (hereafter, cyanotoxins) are among the most lethal known biotoxins. Cyanotoxin exposure is assumed to occur mainly through direct contact with surface-bloom-forming cyanobacteria that are most commonly observed in warm, nutrient-rich lakes. However, recent observations of cyanotoxin accumulation in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), an area where cyanobacteria blooms are rarely observed, have raised concerns over wildlife health in this highly protected region. In response, we sampled twelve clear-water lakes in the GYE to identify potential sources of cyanotoxins (particularly the neurotoxin beta-methylamino-L-alanine, BMAA), exposure routes, and health risks.Despite nutrient limitations and cool water temperatures, the sampled …

Romans At Besa: New Light On An Athenian Deme In The Imperial Period, Anna Kouremenos, Giorgos Mitropoulos
History Faculty Publications
This article presents an overview of Roman citizens registered in the small Attic deme of Besa. The epigraphic record indicates that three Roman emperors—Hadrian, Commodus and Severus Alexander—were enrolled as citizens in this deme, as was the influential eastern magnate G. Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos and several men who dominated Athenian politics during the High Imperial period. We argue that Hadrian's enrolment and repeated sojourns in Athens encouraged various individuals—including two of his successors—to join this deme, but why did the emperor himself choose Besa and not a larger, more important deme in the city's civic centre? Consequently, where did …

What If Criminal Lawmaking Becomes Trustworthy?, Zachary S. Price
What If Criminal Lawmaking Becomes Trustworthy?, Zachary S. Price
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
One common theoretical perspective posits that courts should assume a counter-majoritarian role in criminal law because the political process systematically disfavors the interests of criminal suspects and defendants. Recent shifts in the politics of crime complicate this perspective’ s assumptions, raising the paradoxical possibility that welcome improvements in the politics of crime will weaken the theoretical case for counter- majoritarian judicial decisions. This Article tentatively considers whether, if at all, courts’ interpretive approach should change in response to any continuing moderation of historic “tough on crime” politics. It suggests that while arguments for narrow construction of criminal statutes will remain …
