Tropical marine fish is a main raw material for surimi processing plants, including golden threadfin bream (Nemipterus virgatus Houttuyn, 1782) and swallowtail dwarf monocle bream (Parascolopsis eriomma Jordan & Richardson, 1909). After processing, more than 60% of fish are considered as byproducts (i.e., head, viscera, skin, bones, fins and scale), and tend to discard due to poor-utilization. Hence, this paper aims to evaluate macro- and micro-nutrients derived from golden threadfin bream (GTB) and swallowtail dwarf monocle bream (SDMB). The higher content of protein (25.31 ± 0.81%) was observed in the skin part of GTB, followed by the flesh (21.26 ± …

The larval stage of the darkling beetle, Tenebrio molitor, often referred to as the yellow mealworm, has received significant attention as a promising source of high-quality protein for human consumption due to its exceptional nutritional profile. This study focused on assessing the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of protein concentrates and hydrolysates obtained from mealworm specimens raised under distinct dietary conditions. One cohort of mealworms was sustained on food waste comprising rice bran, milled corn, and carrots (self-bred) (SM), while another group was exclusively provided with rice bran (commercially fed) (CM). Enzymatic hydrolysis of mealworm protein was accomplished using protease enzymes …

Macrobrachium rosenbergii, or the giant freshwater prawn has high market demand due to its exceptional nutritional value for the human diet. Often, most nutritional studies focus on the edible prawn parts, rather than the prawn discarded components. The nutritional evaluation of different prawn parts can provide insights into the nutrient composition and guiding for the development of value-added products. Three groups of prawn samples were collected from 3 different ponds, representing different prawn sizes. The water quality analysis of each pond was also conducted to determine the extent to which it can affect the nutritional composition. The conventional and biochemical …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
This article presents the design and implementation of a low-cost electronic speed controller (ESC) for a three-phase low voltage induction motor in a reused vehicle. The proposed ESC is based on the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, which is a widely used method for motor speed control. The system is built using electronic components available in the Peruvian market and has been tested on a prototype vehicle. The results show that the ESC provides control of the motor speed. The proposed system is a low-cost alternative to commercial ESCs, and it can be used in various applications where control of …

Feelin' Like A Criminal: Fiona Apple And The Lolita Effect, Astrid Burns
Feelin' Like A Criminal: Fiona Apple And The Lolita Effect, Astrid Burns
Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize
From music to novels, the sexualization of young girls and women permeates our media. Many magazine models and actresses are posed in ways that transform them into sexual objects, even without their knowledge or consent. Miley Cyrus was fifteen when she posed seminude for Vanity Fair. Fiona Apple was only nineteen when pressured to strip on camera for her first music video. This phenomena of perpetuated sexualization of women in media is referred to as the Lolita effect, coined by media studies scholar M. Gigi Durham. With a focus on Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” music video, this research paper explores the …
Gender Representation In Modern Children’S Media: The Disguised Damsel In Distress, Alex Bonham Walsh
Gender Representation In Modern Children’S Media: The Disguised Damsel In Distress, Alex Bonham Walsh
Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize
This paper examines the influence that children’s media has on the formation of gender identity in young children. Through an analysis of the psychology behind children’s formation of gender, coupled with Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and history acts, this paper delves into the media’s perpetuation of gender roles and highlights the its critical role in providing children with examples about how to consider and embody one’s gender. Children’s media still possesses gender stereotypes and traditional associations, despite modern movies’ attempts to shift away from harmful narratives. Research demonstrates that children absorb these cues, adopting gendered behaviors and societal …

The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq
The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anti-classification rules to implement the Constitution’s commands of even-handed state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anti-classification rules now dominate Equal Protection, Free Speech, ‘dormant’ Commerce Clause, and even Free Exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates them as “commonsense,” citing their …

Trade Secrecy's Information Paradox, Christopher Buccafusco, Jonathan S. Masur, Deepa Varadarajan
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Trade secret law is meant to encourage socially beneficial behaviors by permitting firms to protect their investments in the creation of valuable information. In theory, the ability to protect valuable information will make firms more likely to create that information in the first instance. But the law can also be used to shield socially harmful behaviors from public oversight. Firms can assert trade secret protection to prevent journalists, watchdogs, and criminal defendants from learning whether they are engaged in dangerous, wrongful, or biased activity. Ideally, trade secret law should sort socially beneficial uses from socially harmful ones, permitting only the …
Administrative Enslavement, Adam Davidson
Administrative Enslavement, Adam Davidson
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
There are currently over a million people enslaved in the United States. Under threat of horrendous punishment, they cook, clean, and even fight fires. They do this not in the shadow of the law but with the express blessing of the Thirteenth Amendment’s Except Clause, which permits enslavement and involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime.
Despite discussions of this exception in law reviews, news reports, and Netflix documentaries, few commentators have recognized that this enslavement happens silently. No prosecutor, judge, or defense attorney tells convicted people that they will be enslaved as punishment for their crime. It is only …
Hippocampal Subfield Volumes And Memory Development From Middle Childhood To Late Adulthood: 2-Year Longitudinal Change And Modifiers Of Age Effects, Roya Homayouni
Wayne State University Dissertations
Introduction: The hippocampus (Hc) is crucial for memory function across all ages and is comprised of distinct subfields: dentate gyrus (DG), cornu ammonis sectors (CA1-3), and subiculum. Hc subfields support different aspects of memory function across the lifespan and are differentially vulnerable to late-life pathology. Increased knowledge of normative lifespan developmental trajectories of Hc subfield volumes will illuminate their cognitive and health correlates across different ages. Yet, the evidence on change and variability of Hc subfield volumes across the lifespan is sparse. Methods: Here, I conducted a meta-analysis of cross-sectional findings of subfield volumes across ages (n = 48,278 participants, …
Skin Reaction Diagnosis In Breast Radiotherapy, Rebecca Lynn Culcasi
Skin Reaction Diagnosis In Breast Radiotherapy, Rebecca Lynn Culcasi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Radiotherapy plays an essential role in post-operative management of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the doses required to eradicate malignant tissue also cause radiation-induced skin damage. The more severe effects often require treatment postponement or cessation, which can impact the probability of local control and lasting negative effects.Acute skin reactions are subjectively evaluated by the clinician according to NCI’s CTC or RTOG scoring systems. The criteria for acute radiation morbidity ranges from grade 1 to 4 for adverse advents. The onset of symptoms typically occurs approximately two weeks into treatment and is dose dependent. Given radiation-induced skin injury remains a dose limiting …

The Unseen War: Struggles Of Andersonville Survivors, Rj Lehal
The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era
The American Civil War lasted from 1861-1865, in that period many lives were lost and many more lives were forever transformed. Families had lost loved ones and those who returned home were not themselves anymore. This paper will examine the post-war mental health of Andersonville survivors. Focus will also be placed on the difficulties of survivors trying to return to their post-war lives; along with the difficulties survivors faced in receiving a pension. And how Andersonville in recent American memory has been transformed into a place of remembrance, for all American POWs in all American wars. Different sources will be …

Clinical Sensitivity And Time-To-Result Of A Cascaded Pooled Testing Approach For Assessing The Prevalence And Intensity Of Schistosoma Haematobium Infection, Abraham Degarege, Bruno Levecke, Yohannes Negash, Abebe Animut, Berhanu Erko
Journal Articles: Epidemiology
BACKGROUND: This study compared the clinical sensitivity and the time-to-result of an individual testing (IT) and a cascaded pooled testing approach (CPT; a positive test result in a pooled sample triggers examination of smaller-sized pools or individual samples) for assessing the prevalence and the intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infection. We also compared the sensitivity of the CPT in detecting S. haematobium infection when deploying urine filtration microscopy (UFM) vs. urine reagent strips (URS), and testing 10 mL vs. 15 mL of urine.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Between October 2021 and April 2022, S. haematobium eggs were counted in urine samples collected from …

Politicians The Founders Warned You About, Neil Fulton
Politicians The Founders Warned You About, Neil Fulton
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Many articles have explored the Founders’ intentions regarding the constitutional text. Much less attention has focused on the Founders’ ideas regarding the traits needed of the leaders in a constitutional republic. The Constitution focuses on governing structures, many of which relate to the electoral process. The Constitution does not spell out the ideal traits of the leaders elected pursuant to those processes. Nonetheless, the Founders possessed clear views about the virtues and qualifications that ideal political leaders required. Indeed, the Founders issued warnings about certain archetypal political figures who, because of their flagrant disregard of the ideal virtues and qualifications, …
The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish
The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish
Women's and Gender Studies Theses
My thesis centers around Black women’s dating and hookup experiences at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I distributed a survey with 44 questions; five demographic questions and eight factors that include questions revolving around being romantically and/or sexually rejected based on their race/ethnicity. After three weeks of collecting data, my research has revealed patterns involving negative attitudes towards dating apps, admissions of hopelessness in finding an intimate partner, being fetishized by white people, and feelings of betrayal when/if a person of color expressed rejection based on their race/ethnicity. The implementation of feminist theory and feminist scholars such as Audre Lorde, Patricia …

Skinny Labels: Changing Scenario Of Induced Infringement And Public Policy, Sandhu, Amit Dhillon
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention to the inventor. However, when it comes to life-sustaining products, these exclusive rights have a negative impact on people’s lives. The government has tried to develop initiatives, such as the Hatch-Waxman Act, to compensate and speed up the entry of affordable medicines into the market. But when one patent addressing one medical condition (indication) blocks the entry of the generic, the use of skinny labels makes it possible for the generic players to carve out the label and enter the market only with indications that are off-patent. This helps bring …

“Blackjack” Pershing’S Punitive Expedition, Jacob Breezeel
“Blackjack” Pershing’S Punitive Expedition, Jacob Breezeel
Tenor of Our Times
In 1916, General Pershing led a force of American troops into Mexico in response to a raid on Columbus, New Mexico. While unsuccessful in achieving the primary mission, the expedition produced advancements in military transportation and aviation and provided valuable experiences to the next generation of generals which were central to America's success in World War I.
