A Contribution To The Preservation And Revival Of The Cabo Verdean Pano D’Obra Textiles, Maggy Fragoso Jan 2024

A Contribution To The Preservation And Revival Of The Cabo Verdean Pano D’Obra Textiles, Maggy Fragoso

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Textiles from Cabo Verde were highly prized for trading along the West African coast, from the second half of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. They originated from the fusion of different cultural sources making their design visually distinct from the other textiles of West Africa: slave weavers were taken to Cabo Verde by the Portuguese and with their characteristic narrow strip looms, which had to be adjusted, were made to weave textiles with North African patterns and Christian references.

From the 19th century, a marked decline in the manufacture of these historic …

Tactility And Historicity In Contemporary Textile Art: The Greek Example, Markia Liapi Jan 2024

Tactility And Historicity In Contemporary Textile Art: The Greek Example, Markia Liapi

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The following presentation focuses on studying contemporary textile art through two concepts, originating from contemporary theory of art, tactility and historicity. While tactility describes aesthetic, and specifically tactile qualites of textiles as pieces of art, historicity focuses on more theoretical concerns that the artistic piece proposes on the viewer. The paper analyses these two tools as a stystem of examining and, also, enjoying contemporary textile art, focusing on a concrete paradigm, the example of three contemporary Greek artists, Voula Massoura, Giwta Andriakaina and Artemis Alcalay. The artistic production of these artists is a valuable example of seeing textile art in …

The Stamina Of Things: Jean Toury's Nightshirt, Janet Pollock Jan 2024

The Stamina Of Things: Jean Toury's Nightshirt, Janet Pollock

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

“Stamina. from Latin stamen (Pliny), literally "foundation in weaving, thread of the warp" ......also threads spun by the Fates.”

A seasoned forager of forest and flea markets, I have tempered my eye to both the unassuming and the unexpected. I make and study textiles of every stripe. The subject of my presentation, this nightshirt, traveled 5500 miles and 80 years to reach my neck of the woods. Tailor-made and monogrammed, well-worn and deeply stained, it was suddenly dispatched into the world, to be sold "as is". I asked and was given a name, a place and a date. Jean Toury. …

The Petticoat: Details Of A Forgotten Garment In Mexico City (1900–1910), Nallely Rangel Vázquez

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During Porfirian government, Mexican society experienced a flourishing of the textile industry driven by state policies that encouraged both the rise of the national industry and foreign investment. This process was perceived from the daily life of the capital, through the windows of silk shops, shoe shops, warehouses and, above all, the imposing department store El Palacio de Hierro. One of the garments that was designed to fit at the waist and cover the legs was the petticoat, which was assumed to be a piece of female underwear. In this article, I am interested in unravelling details findings about this …

Woven Symphony: Exploring The Parallels Between Weaving And Music, Qianwen Yu Jan 2024

Woven Symphony: Exploring The Parallels Between Weaving And Music, Qianwen Yu

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Weaving and music are art forms often perceived as unrelated but actually share deep connections and fascinating similarities. In this presentation, I will first briefly introduce the impact of the 19th-century Jacquard loom on the invention of the Player Piano, a musical technology that evolved into the modern "MIDI" computer audio notation system. Second, I will explore the similarities found in both weaving and musical composition by presenting some of my own media installation art works. These works translate musical scores into woven textures, and vice versa, creating symphonies and revealing new sensory ways to appreciate textiles and music. I …

Kuna Shirts From Panama In Brussels’ Art And History Museum, Anne-Françoise Martin Jan 2024

Kuna Shirts From Panama In Brussels’ Art And History Museum, Anne-Françoise Martin

IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022

The Kuna live in the San Blas Archipelago off the coast of Panama. Kuna women make cotton shirts (mola/molakana) using the reverse appliqué technique. They start by superimposing several thin layers of very colourful fabric. A subtle positioning of cuts brings out the colours of the lower layers and creates patterns. Kuna women are inspired by plants and animals in the nature that surrounds them when creating these patterns. They also draw on a repertoire of patterns from everyday objects. These shirts, sewn with pride and a great deal of humour, can tell us a lot about Kuna society. They …

The Magnet School Wars And The Future Of Colorblindness, Sonja Starr Jan 2024

The Magnet School Wars And The Future Of Colorblindness, Sonja Starr

Articles

The Supreme Court’s recent decision striking down the use of race-based classifications in university admissions reflects its growing commitment to the concept of “colorblindness,” which has implications well beyond education. In anticipation, many schools and other actors are already moving toward alternative, facially race-neutral strategies for promoting diversity and reducing racial disparity. But what will happen when those policies too are challenged because they have race-related motives? Will courts soon find all race-conscious policymaking unlawful based on its ends? This is the next stage of the legal battle over colorblindness, and it is already underway.

The first wave of this …

The Harm In The Fiduciary Myth, Kelli Alces Williams Jan 2024

The Harm In The Fiduciary Myth, Kelli Alces Williams

Scholarly Publications

Fiduciary law has become the doctrine of choice in scholarship aiming to protect vulnerable parties from powerful decisionmakers. But fiduciary law cannot fill all the gaps in those impersonal, public relationships because the beneficiary class is large, disparate, and widely dispersed. Public leaders and decision makers cannot zealously pursue the interests of all parties vulnerable to their decision making and they are often driven by various personal interests in choosing which set of beneficiary interests to prioritize. The persistent myth that leaders of large groups are fiduciaries and that fiduciary obligation is the answer to all power imbalance problems harms …

Modeling Complex Dynamic Systems Using Graph Neural Networks, Shruti Udupa Jan 2024

Modeling Complex Dynamic Systems Using Graph Neural Networks, Shruti Udupa

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Our work investigates the use of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for modeling complex dynamic systems. Understanding dynamic systems is essential for comprehending how physical and social interactions in real-world systems evolve over time and how they can be influenced or controlled. Conventional techniques often use differential equations and numerical methods, which are computationally expensive and demand detailed knowledge of the system’s physical behavior. GNNs provide an alternative by adopting a data-driven approach that learns directly from data, making them especially valuable for systems without closed-form solutions. This work aims to harness GNNs to predict and simulate dynamic behaviors in graph-based …

Predicting Future States With Spatial Point Processes In Single Molecule Resolution Spatial Transcriptomics, Biraaj Rout

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis, we present an innovative framework centered around the application of Random Forest Regression to forecast the prospective distribution of cells expressing the Sog-D gene (active cells) during the embryogenesis process in Drosophila. Our methodology specifically targets the Anterior-to-posterior (AP) and Dorsal-to-Ventral (DV) axes, unraveling the intricacies of gene expression control in living organisms at super-resolution, single-molecule resolution through whole embryo spatial transcriptomics imaging. The Random Forest Regression model serves as a pivotal tool in predicting the succeeding stage’s active cell distribution, capitalizing on the insights obtained from the preceding stage. We integrate temporally resolved, spatial point processes …

Unsupervised Machine Learning In Wireless Sensor Measurements And Hyperspectral Imaging, Abrar U. Alam Jan 2024

Unsupervised Machine Learning In Wireless Sensor Measurements And Hyperspectral Imaging, Abrar U. Alam

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The increasing demand for real-time analysis of sensor data in dynamic environments necessitates innovative approaches to data clustering. This work introduces a novel Online Kernel Clustering (OKC) framework that efficiently determines time-varying clustering configurations without requiring training data. The proposed method employs sparse kernel factorization, guided by a time-dependent metric to quantify the closeness of kernel similarity matrices to a block diagonal structure. By processing data sequentially, the OKC framework is tailored for non-stationary settings. The optimization process integrates block coordinate descent, difference-of-convex functions minimization, and projected sub-gradient descent to iteratively update kernel covariance matrices and cluster memberships online. Numerical …

Design And Experimentation Of Novel Human Head Surrogate Models For Sensing Traumatic Brain Injury, Arthur T. Koster Jan 2024

Design And Experimentation Of Novel Human Head Surrogate Models For Sensing Traumatic Brain Injury, Arthur T. Koster

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Brain injury is a significant source of mortality in the US and has been an important area of research over the past century. The need to understand injury thresholds and pathology coupled with the difficulty of measuring relevant injury mechanisms in a living subject logically gives rise to the idea that researchers need to create head models for use in simulation and experimentation. This study focuses on understanding the effects of material properties, size, and shape on the dynamic response of a head model so that head models used in simulations and experiments can more accurately represent the real human …

Experimental Investigations And Optimization Of 3d Printed Cellular Structures For Protection Against Traumatic Brain Injury, Aaron R. Jackson Jan 2024

Experimental Investigations And Optimization Of 3d Printed Cellular Structures For Protection Against Traumatic Brain Injury, Aaron R. Jackson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) disrupts brain function due to head impacts, blast exposures, and ballistic penetrations. It is a significant cause of mental health issues and disability, particularly among military personnel. Historically, combat helmets were designed primarily to protect against fragments. However, recent data highlights the need for helmets that also protect against blast and blunt impacts. Effective TBI prevention requires helmets that address various energy threats while remaining lightweight. A critical metric in this effort is head acceleration, which is closely linked to injury across different scales of brain damage.

Four lattice structures were 3D printed using Digital ABS …

Study Of A Multi-Agent Containment Problem Under Communication Constraints And Defense From Malicious Agents, Braulio Mora Jan 2024

Study Of A Multi-Agent Containment Problem Under Communication Constraints And Defense From Malicious Agents, Braulio Mora

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis investigates a multi-agent containment problem where a fast evader, moving at a constant speed and heading, attempts to escape a circular containment region. A team of slow pursuers possess a nonzero capture radius and seek to capture the evader before escape. The research addresses two primary scenarios: one involving the team of pursuers, with no communication network, being constrained to the edge of the containment region, and the second involving a team of pursuers, with a communication network, not being constrained to the edge of the containment region. Both scenarios study the influence of malicious agents in the …
