Modeling The Function Of Ryanodine Receptor Type 2 And Its Role In Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (Cpvt) Heart Disease, Harani Ritesh Athwale, Dillen-Preetesh Jayanti Patel, Sai Puneeth Kothuru
Protein Modeling Reports
Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT) is a potentially fatal condition linked to a mutation in the Ryanodine receptor (RyR2), the largest calcium ion channel known, which is crucial for heart function. The RyR2 protein is made of four similar subunits. Mutations in RyR2 can cause the channels to "leak," disrupting normal heart rhythms. In individuals with this mutation, the combination of caffeine intake and exercise can worsen these effects, leading to sudden cardiac arrest. With the RyR2 receptor located on the sarcoplasmic reticulum of cardiac muscle, the mutation prevents the receptor from fully closing, which hyperpolarizes the membrane and disrupts …
Microbial Prevalence And Antibiotic Resistance Associated With Urban Food Production Systems, Nirosha Ruwani Amarasekara
Microbial Prevalence And Antibiotic Resistance Associated With Urban Food Production Systems, Nirosha Ruwani Amarasekara
Wayne State University Dissertations
Despite the increasing popularity of urban agriculture and farmers’ markets, there is a lack of scientific data on microbial prevalence and antibiotic resistance associated with this unique food production system. The overall goal of this research is to understand antibiotic resistance and microbial prevalence in soil and fresh produce associated with urban agriculture. Specifically, we aim to investigate ARG in association with resistance genes to metals and other compounds in urban agricultural soil as well as antibiotic resistome and Listeria contamination in fresh produce distributed in urban communities.
In the initial phase of this research, soil samples were collected from …
Preserving Wonder And Welcoming Boredom: The Importance Of Quietly Incredible Adventures In Today’S Rushed Childhood, Amalia Hillmann
Preserving Wonder And Welcoming Boredom: The Importance Of Quietly Incredible Adventures In Today’S Rushed Childhood, Amalia Hillmann
Children's Book Writing and Illustrating (MFA) Theses
Once upon childhoods past, children’s early years were filled with exploration of and delight in the world around them. They learned through independent play and chasing curiosity without the micromanagement of intervening adults. Inter-generational relationships grew character and knowledge via shared stories and skills and encouraged collaborative experiences and tasks. Today’s culture is losing this inquisitive, play-filled heart of childhood. Children are increasingly pulled through their earliest years and pushed into adolescence prematurely by impatient communities, unrealistic academic expectations, and distracted parenting. The loss of slightly-wild, unstructured adventures and rooted parent-child relationships in pre-teen years should be of interest to …
Numerical Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Porous Tissue Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Brandon Coburn
Numerical Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Porous Tissue Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Brandon Coburn
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
With the recent advancements within biomedical engineering of bone tissue scaffolds, there is still a need to develop mechanically robust and biocompatible with low immunogenicity for bone regeneration. Additionally, the evaluation of the fluid dynamics of the porous Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) bone scaffold also shows the need for investigation due to the complex fluid interaction of hemodynamics that occurs with the scaffold internal and external domains. To aid in the development of treating bone fractures, defects, and diseases. Furthermore, with the induction of a wide variety of TPMS architecture that yields different topologies, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) …
Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki
Synthesis Of Leishmania Spp Antigens For The Development Of Vaccine Candidates, Dipesh Budhathoki
Theses and Dissertations
Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania. Presently no vaccine against Leishmaniasis is available, so there is a need for new anti-leishmanial treatments, including an effective preventive vaccine. We focus on developing vaccine candidates based on leishmania’s cell surface carbohydrate antigens. Saccharides heavily envelop the cell surface of Leishmania, lipophosphoglycan (LPG) becoming a significant glycan in most leishmania species. Its intrinsic antigenicity makes this polysaccharide a useful target for developing conjugated vaccine candidates against all leishmaniasis variants. In this report, we present our progress towards the synthesis of the fragments of LPG …

The “Practitioner Of Physick And Surgery” And The Enslaved “Doctor”: Medicine, Slavery, Race, And Patriarchy In The Eighteenth-Century Jamaica, Elise A. Mitchell
History Faculty Works
In 1773, Alexander Johnston, a Scottish ‘Practitioner of Physick and Surgery’ in St. Ann, Jamaica, made a list titled ‘my slaves’. Beside the name ‘Galen’ he wrote ‘a Doctor’. Galen was the only enslaved person Johnston ever recognised with that title. Many slave owners called the people they enslaved and tasked with attending ill enslaved people, ‘Doctor’, ‘Doctress’, or ‘nurse’. Johnston’s records reveal that he sent Galen away to train under another white doctor before assigning him that role. Johnston and Galen both lived in a time when medical labour and expertise were increasingly masculinised in Jamaica. Juxtaposing the histories …

Human satellites (HSats) are pericentric, tandemly repeating satellite DNA sequences in the human genome. While silent in normal cells, a subset of HSat2 noncoding RNA is expressed and accumulates in the nucleus of cancer cells. We developed a FISH-based approach for identification of the distribution of three subfamilies of HSat2 (A1, A2, B) sequences on individual human chromosomes. Further, using the HSat subfamily annotations in the T2T completed centromere satellite (CenSat) sequence, we isolated, defined and mapped differentially expressed sequence variants of nuclear-restricted HSat2 and HSat3 RNA from cancer cell lines and heat-shocked cells. We identified chromosome-specific and subfamily-specific expression …

Noise And Light Pollution Elicit Endocrine Responses In Urban But Not Forest Frogs, J. A. H. Smit, R. Vooijs, P. Lindenburg, Alexander T. Baugh, W. Halfwerk
Biology Faculty Works
Urban areas are characterised by the presence of sensory pollutants, such as anthropogenic noise and artificial light at night (ALAN). Animals can quickly adapt to novel environmental conditions by adjusting their behaviour, which is proximately regulated by endocrine systems. While endocrine responses to sensory pollution have been widely reported, this has not often been linked to changes in behaviour, hampering the understanding of adaptiveness of endocrine responses. Our aim was, therefore, to investigate the effects of urbanisation, specifically urban noise and light pollution, on hormone levels in male urban and forest túngara frogs (Engystomops pustulosus), a species with …

An Examination Of Treatment Fidelity And Transfer Of Strategies In A Cross-Age Dialogic Reading Intervention, Estela Baka, Cassie Nemec, Glen Diaz, Eliana Tolentino, Dina Moore, Cheryl Durwin
NERA Conference Proceedings 2024
We developed the Dialogic Reading with Integrated Vocabulary Enrichment (DRIVE) approach to promote reading achievement in struggling readers. This study investigates the treatment fidelity of DRIVE in a Title I school across training and intervention and near and far transfer of learning. Fourteen “Big Buddies” and 7 “Little Buddies” were chosen by low reading scores. Across training and intervention, EMPOWERED strategy use was consistent, but three were used less during intervention. Six strategies were frequent in near transfer compared to three in far transfer. Overall, treatment fidelity of DRIVE was consistent, but lower frequency of strategies will inform future training.

Pesticide-Coated Seeds: How The Treated Articles Exemption Circumvents Regulation And Harms The Environment, Scott Hudson
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
Pesticide-coated seeds dominate the seed market for a wide range of crops, making them the primary means of delivering pesticides to many agricultural plants. Scientific research has revealed increasingly adverse effects from pesticide-coated seeds, including contamination of native plants, surface waters and groundwater, as well as causing the death of non-targeted insects and birds. Evidence also shows that pesticides from the seeds migrates to drinking water supplies and potentially imperils human health. Yet pesticide-coated seeds are not regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency due to a little-known exemption called the Treated Articles Exemption. This Article argues that EPA’s …
Lyme Disease Ecology In The Eastern United States: An Overview, Aliya C. Aguirre
Lyme Disease Ecology In The Eastern United States: An Overview, Aliya C. Aguirre
Biology Student Work
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States of America (USA). In North America, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) and vectored by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Historically, Lyme disease has been primarily restricted to the northeastern United States, despite I. scapularis occurring throughout the entire eastern region. There are genetically unique northern and southern populations of I. scapularis. The differences between these two populations have been hypothesized to be driving the difference in Lyme disease case incidence in the northeastern and southeastern United States. This review will examine …

The Supreme Court, starting in 1971, has lit upon a reckless path of protecting speech that is, by any reasonable measure, appallingly vulgar, emotionally hurtful, and dangerous. Against the wishes of the community, the Court has protected a roster of extremely offensive speech:
• a rageful repetition of the F-word uttered by a teacher before children in a school auditorium
• a White skinhead’s cross burning on the front lawn of a Black family’s house
• the public burning of the American flag by an avowed Communist who hated the United States and who cared nothing for the emotional pain …

Extended reality (XR) technology (that is, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and other 3D technologies) offers many opportunities and benefits for education in the humanities and arts. However, after attending many education- technology workshops and having read countless books and journal articles on the uses of XR in education over the past decade, it has been overwhelmingly apparent that most of the research and conference presentations tend to focus on the use of this technology in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. While in many ways this is understandable, given the obvious applications of the technology to the …

IX Jornadas Internacionales de Textiles Precolombinos y Amerindianos / 9th International Conference on PreColumbian and Amerindian Textiles, Museo delle Culture, Milan, 2022
This paper presents the preliminary results and conclusions from an examination of an exceedingly rare example of a weft-face and tapestry-woven aksu in the collections of The Textile Museum. Patterned with figurative butterflies, the garment closely resembles those depicted by Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala in several of his illustrations of ceremonies and elite women. Its features present challenges for determining its dates and the level of social status it represents or confers. The similarity between the aksu’s butterflies and those in a checkerboard unku in the Field Museum provides suggestive evidence for its use in an official state setting. …

This work aims to contribute to our current understanding of how information was organized in khipus, Andean colourful knotted cords used as writing. If the idea that khipu signs could work as a flow chart was common in the last two decades, it is not until the notion of kayte as subject marker was elaborated by Sabine Hyland on the basis of Julio C. Tello's notes that the theory could be discussed on more empirical grounds. So far, the term “kayte” applied to needlework bundles, pompons or tufts attached to the beginning of the primary cord. In this work, the …
