In the literature, there are studies on medical applications using different nanofiber production methods with natural polymers. However, each system has different fiber-forming capabilities. For this reason, in this study, we investigated the production of nanofibers from a biodegradable natural polymer, gelatin, using four separate nanofiber production methods, namely electrospinning (ES), electroblowing (EB), solution blowing (SB), and centrifugal spinning (CS). Our aim was to determine the most suitable fibrous web structure for medical applications and contribute to science in this respect. Polluted Soundscapes And Contrepoison In Sixteenth-Century France: The Sonic Warfare Leading To The First War Of Religion, John Romey

In the decades leading up to and during the first years of the Wars of Religion, Huguenots and Catholics waged audible battles over sonic territories using songs as spiritual weapons. Huguenots memorized and communally sang metrical psalms in the vernacular as sonic markers of the Reformed faith. Catholics interpreted these same sounds as pollution in need of eradication. Artus Desiré, for example, responded by producing polemical contrepoison, musical antidotes created by composing new countertexts to Marot’s Psalm tunes to “cleanse” them of their perceived heresy. In the Chaozhou City Gazetteer of Buddhism & Chaozhou Kaiyuan Monastery Gazetteer published in 1992, the then Abbot of the Kaiyuan Monastery, Shi Huiyuan 释慧原 heavily condemned the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) monk Shi Kesheng 释可声 (date unknown) for "starting the sins among laities in the Chaozhou region who dared transgressing (the Buddhist doctrines) and became chant leaders in a flaming mouth ceremony.” Why was the Abbot so upset with a fellow monk back in history? Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Noncongregational settings were integral to hymnody in the postbellum settler colonial context of the southern United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The incorporation of hymn singing into a wide range of noncongregational settings served Black, white, and Native populations in navigating unsettled racial dynamics during this period across the US South and its diasporas. This essay features three case studies examining hymn collections intended or repurposed for a range of noncongregational uses: spiritual collections connected with the performing ensembles of black institutions, a shape-note songbook that attempted to bridge singing convention and congregational contexts, and a …

Municipalities have been trying for decades to hold energy companies accountable for their role in the climate change crisis. In an effort to prevent suits, these companies are pushing the novel legal theory that federal common law provides a basis for jurisdiction in federal court over these claims. Once in federal court, the defendants argue that the very federal common law that served as the basis for removal has been displaced by the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. Fighter, Player, Hunter: Queer Women And Female Agents On Secular Gothic Ivories, Emma Le Pouésard

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This essay shines a light on the previously ignored queer representations of women on Gothic secular ivories, taking as its case studies three popular iconographical themes: the Castle of Love, the game of chess, and the courtly hunt. Refusing to yield to compulsory heterosexuality when looking at the indeterminately gendered bodies that populate these objects reveals both the ivories’ inherent queerness and their potential to interrogate their own normativity. Like the romance literature that inspired the images on these objects, they represent and enforce idealized gender norms with remarkable reluctance. This essay argues that in Malory’s Morte Darthur, Gwenyvere, like the English queens of the late medieval period, has a coterie of ladies in service who are essential to her relationship with Launcelot in particular. Their support provides a site of resistance to the male chivalric world that dominates the Arthurian community, especially when considered through the lens of female friendship, and helps the queen transgress patriarchal expectations.

Women’S Public Language In The "Old English Apollonius Of Tyre", Sophia D'Ignazio

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This article argues that the Old English Apollonius is a deliberate, complete adaptation of the Apollonius story that centers women’s learning. Read as an integral narrative, rather than a fragment, the Old English Apollonius becomes a story about Princess Arcestrate’s education and governance. Following hagiographical models, Arcestrate’s learning and virtue take center stage, with Apollonius displaced into the supporting role of teacher. The adaptation celebrates female learning as the means of moral governance and dynastic success.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith clarifies the scope of transformative use and the role of these uses in the fair use analysis. In late 2017, the #MeToo movement swept through the United States as individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life revealed their experiences with sexual abuse and sexual harassment. After the #MeToo movement, many scholars, advocates, and policymakers posited that the watershed moment would prompt changes in the ways in which sexual harassment cases were handled. This Article examines the impact the #MeToo movement has had on judicial decisionmaking. Responses to questions can provide significant insight about linguistic structure and meaning. In this paper, I propose an analysis of the structure of assertions and various responses to assertions, bringing together semantic and syntactic considerations. The analysis incorporates a Speech Act Phrase (SAP, Speas & Tenny 2003), which is taken to encode illocutionary force. I present novel data on a polar response particle (PRP) form that has not yet been considered in the literature, namely, the English yeah-huh/nuh-uh responses. This issue of YJMR includes three articles featuring three case studies that represent different religious worlds and historical moments. In each, the interplay of the above three factors—medium, forms and norms, and religious contest—can be clearly discerned. Annunciation And The Cross: The Marian Theology Of Incarnation In James Macmillan’S Music And Public Discourse, Joel Clarkson

Many of Scottish composer James MacMillan’s most essential works are influenced by his Catholic faith, and thematically focused on a theological expression of Incarnation and suffering worked out through a dissonant musical style. MacMillan has developed a robust public discourse that includes statements about his faith and the way it informs his music, and his forthright demeanor has often provoked tension with various figures and groups. This article suggests that these two forms of conflict—discordance in his composition, and elements of conflict in his public dialogue—are both driven by a Marian theology of Incarnation that provides the impetus both for …

Xanthones comprise a large family of heterocycles displaying fascinating biological properties. Many synthetic protocols have been developed for the preparation of natural and nonnatural xanthone derivatives. Among them, condensation reactions between salicylic acid derivatives and phenol partners are highly desirable. Those reactions can be satisfactorily performed using Eaton’s reagent (P2O5 in CH3SO3H). Despite being highly effective with a variety of substrates, this approach presents limitations that depend on the electronic nature of the reaction precursors. Non-specific abdominal pain (NSAP) presents a diagnostic challenge due to its varied etiologies and often inconclusive clinical and radiological findings. Diagnostic laparoscopy has emerged as a valuable minimally invasive tool that allows direct visualization of the abdominal cavity, facilitating early and accurate diagnosis. This study evaluates the role of diagnostic laparoscopy in patients presenting with NSAP, highlighting its diagnostic accuracy, safety profile, and impact on clinical management. Evidence suggests that laparoscopy not only aids in identifying underlying pathologies—ranging from appendicitis and gynecological disorders to early peritonitis—but also reduces unnecessary laparotomies and hospital stay duration. This dataset contains emergence, biomass, and fungal biomass data collected during a laboratory study examining the effects of soil fungal level and seed coating treatment on the growth of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata). Pathogenesis from soil and seed-borne fungus can limit success when restoring native species. Fungicides can combat fungal pathogens, but in some studies, fungicides treatments are ineffective at improving seedling emergence over untreated, control seed. These studies suggest low fungal presence due to dry conditions may be the cause of the ineffectiveness of fungicide treatments for some years and sites. This study tested if fungicide treatment …
