Developing A Hypothetical Research Study Through Scaffolding: An Approach Used In A Graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling Research Course, Tracy N. Baker Dec 2023

Developing A Hypothetical Research Study Through Scaffolding: An Approach Used In A Graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling Research Course, Tracy N. Baker

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Conducting research at any level can be daunting, especially for students interested in pursuing helping professions, and have no desire to conduct research professionally. The goal of this redefined research assignment was two-fold: 1) address AI concerns experienced in higher education and, 2) mentor students in the development of a hypothetical research study. Students are encouraged to select participants and variables of interest within the first two weeks of the course. Scaffolded throughout the semester, students submit weekly assignments on their progress, including annotated bibliographies of relevant literature, descriptions of the selected variables and populations, and their proposed methodology: which …

Sustained Beneficial Infections: Priority Effects, Competition, And Specialization Drive Patterns Of Association In Intracellular Mutualisms, Malcolm Hill, Barry Lawson, John W. Cain, Nasheya Rahman, Shiv Toolsidass, Tongyu Wang, Sara Geraghty, Eberardo Raymundo, April Hill

All Faculty Scholarship

Intracellular symbioses provide a useful system for exploring evolutionary and ecological forces that shape mutualistic partnerships. Within- and among-host competitiveness driven by different strategies that symbionts adopt as they transfer materials to the host across a sub-cellular membrane might explain patterns of host:symbiont association observed in natural systems. We tested the hypothesis that different translocation strategies employed by symbionts affect their ability to occupy host habitats using two distinct modeling approaches. The first involved constructing a deterministic, Lotka-Volterra-type model with two symbiont species competing for access to a single host. The model recovered expected behaviors of co-occupancy/coinfection as well as …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The effect of active sonars on marine mammal behaviour is a topic of considerable interest and scientific investigation. Some whales, including the largest species (blue whales, Balaenoptera musculus), can be impacted by mid-frequency (1-10 kHz) military sonars. Here we apply complementary experimental methods to provide the first experimentally controlled measurements of behavioural responses to military sonar and similar stimuli for a related endangered species, fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus). Analytical methods include: (i) principal component analysis paired with generalized additive mixed models; (ii) hidden Markov models; and (iii) structured expert elicitation using response severity metrics. These approaches provide complementary perspectives on …

On The Spectrum Of Mesons In Quenched $Sp(2n)$ Gauge Theories, Ed Bennett, Jack Holligan, Deog Ki Hong, Jong-Wan Lee, C. -J. David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We report the findings of our extensive study of the spectra of flavoured mesons in lattice gauge theories with symplectic gauge group and fermion matter content treated in the quenched approximation. For the $Sp(4)$, $Sp(6)$, and $Sp(8)$ gauge groups, the (Dirac) fermions transform in either the fundamental, or the 2-index, antisymmetric or symmetric, representations. This study sets the stage for future precision calculations with dynamical fermions in the low mass region of lattice parameter space. Our results have potential phenomenological applications ranging from composite Higgs models, to top (partial) compositeness, to dark matter models with composite, strong-coupling dynamical origin. Having …

A System For Multi-Level, Multi-Variate Embedding Framework For Risk Scoring, Hao Xu, Anurag Tangri, Chiranjeet Chetia Dec 2023

A System For Multi-Level, Multi-Variate Embedding Framework For Risk Scoring, Hao Xu, Anurag Tangri, Chiranjeet Chetia

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure provides a novel system for multi-level multi-variate embedding framework for risk scoring. In the present disclosure, risk factors within each category are aggregated as one score using Level-1 embedding, while a global risk score is obtained using Level-2 embedding. The framework models different scores considering the interactive effects among different factors and scores. Also, any auxiliary variables that are important for global risk scoring can be easily integrated. The coefficients in multi-level embedding can be determined within one process based on historical data of user interested activities. A penalized loss is used to optimize the model structure …

Is Tenure Enough?: Reproductive Healthcare And Academic Precarity, Lisa Vandenbossche Dec 2023

Is Tenure Enough?: Reproductive Healthcare And Academic Precarity, Lisa Vandenbossche

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This piece focuses on insurance and parental leave. While it feels like we know in the abstract that insurance and leave policies are important concerns for faculty members, and employees across all industries, conversations about them by and large taken place in informal settings – through mentorship or personal conversations between friends. In reconstructing these informal information networks, this article seeks to make visible ways that leave policies impact career decisions by women academics. We need to start seeing employee benefits as a reflection of institutional values, to ask about them when considering employment, and to have these conversations with …

Care And Pregnancy Loss, Chelsea Phillips Dec 2023

Care And Pregnancy Loss, Chelsea Phillips

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In the wake of the Dobbs decision, new legislation across the U.S. has created ambiguity around the access to and legality of interventions for pregnancy loss in certain states. This essay situates our current legal landscape in opposition to that of the eighteenth-century, where care and preservation of the pregnant person were a guiding priority.

Abortion In The Fiction Of Laclos, Rousseau, Isabelle De Charrière, Montesquieu, Servanne Woodward Dec 2023

Abortion In The Fiction Of Laclos, Rousseau, Isabelle De Charrière, Montesquieu, Servanne Woodward

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Eighteenth-century French fiction containing episodes on abortion are influenced by the seventeenth-century scandal of La Voisin, and by the 1731 legal suit involving the Jesuit Priest Père Girard and Catherine Cadière. Two observations may be derived from eighteenth-century French novels: women's abortions are monitored, instigated, and decided by fathers, husbands and lovers, who select for them, if they are to remain celibate, and whose children they bear. And as well, abortion tests or reveals the limits of a woman’s individual freedom and right to care for herself.

The Quick And The Dead (And The Transported), Manushag N. Powell Dec 2023

The Quick And The Dead (And The Transported), Manushag N. Powell

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In most nations that still execute prisoners—including the U.S.—it is illegal to execute a pregnant person. In English common law, women have been permitted to “plead the belly” in one form or another since the 14th century, and this fact is sometimes misconstrued by anti-choice and forced-birth advocates as evidence of a long legal tradition of protection for the lives of fetuses. In fact, it is merely evidence of a long history of legal inconsistencies in the ways laws were applied and sentences carried out against women, for whom there were fewer options for clemency than for men. This …

Teaching Anne Finch In "Partisanship In Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Britain", Jennifer Wilson Dec 2023

Teaching Anne Finch In "Partisanship In Restoration And Eighteenth-Century Britain", Jennifer Wilson

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

The works of Anne Finch, a writer doubly exiled as a female poet and Jacobite, stand out as eminently teachable examples of a compelling political outsider view that provokes us to consider how we can better attend to perspectives of principled opposition. Her poems in response to what has been called the "first modern revolution," together with her odes upon the deaths of King James II and Queen Mary Beatrice, showcase the subversive power of indirect articulation, expressing values through emotions and affects in veiled forms such as allegory and alternate history.

Fierce Allegories: Teaching Anne Finch’S Fables In A Course On Satire, Sharon Smith Dec 2023

Fierce Allegories: Teaching Anne Finch’S Fables In A Course On Satire, Sharon Smith

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay outlines an approach to integrating Anne Finch’s work into an advanced undergraduate and/or graduate course on eighteenth-century satire, focusing particularly on her satirical verse fables. This approach encourages students to question common critical assumptions about women and satire, most particularly that women avoided satire due to its association with aggression and politics—assumptions Finch’s fables are well-suited to challenge. The essay focuses particularly on Finch’s verse fables "Upon an Impropable Undertaking," “The Eagle, the Sow, and the Cat,” and “The Owl Describing Her Young Ones.” In these poems, written in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution, Finch employs violent …

Using The Anne Finch Digital Archive As A Teaching Text, Martha F. Bowden Dec 2023

Using The Anne Finch Digital Archive As A Teaching Text, Martha F. Bowden

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In the course of my teaching career, I have used the Anne Finch Digital Archive in two different classes in the English major at my university: the gateway and capstone courses. In the gateway course, it functions as one of several sites in a module on the Digital Humanities, and as a required text in the capstone course. The essay investigates the Digital Archive’s strengths both as an example of a high-quality digital humanities project and as a rich site for the investigation and analysis of Finch’s poetry. Assignment guidelines for the gateway module and the reading list for …

Teaching Anne Finch’S Satire In The British Literature Survey Classroom, Amanda Hiner Dec 2023

Teaching Anne Finch’S Satire In The British Literature Survey Classroom, Amanda Hiner

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This article argues for the intentional inclusion of Anne Finch’s diverse and compelling satires in the undergraduate British literature survey course and for the recognition of Finch as an accomplished theorist and practitioner of satire. The article includes practical strategies for pairing Finch’s satires with other well-known and anthologized satires; examines her satires in the context of the Revolution of 1688; and provides an analysis of her innovative rhetorical strategies, including her efforts to dissociate herself from satire while simultaneously producing sharp and defiant satires. The article argues that cultivating a deeper understanding of Finch’s contributions to eighteenth-century satire enriches …

Feminine Interiority And Social Protest In The Poetry Of Mary Leapor, Joanna C. Yates Dec 2023

Feminine Interiority And Social Protest In The Poetry Of Mary Leapor, Joanna C. Yates

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Mary Leapor (1722-46) is one of the many under-studied women poets of the eighteenth-century. She is often described as a laboring-class poet which, while historically accurate, implies her immediate marginalization as an writer by her class and gender. Her focus of enquiry explores a new female authorial interiority, embracing her own volition, personality, and aesthetic sensibility through the act of writing itself. This nascent individualism, arising from the examination of feeling, lies at the heart of her work and heralds the social protest that will erupt later in the century. This paper hopes to offer a broader perspective on Leapor’s …

Forests As Social Safety Nets During The Covid-19 Lockdowns: Evidence From India, Alder Keleman Saxena Dec 2023

Forests As Social Safety Nets During The Covid-19 Lockdowns: Evidence From India, Alder Keleman Saxena

Sustainability Seminar Series

This presentation reports on research assessing the social-ecological dynamics of the Covid-19 lockdowns in India in 2020 and 2021. Preliminary findings of research in forest- adjacent communities in three states (Assam, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh) suggest that while forest resources did serve as a buffer for some of the most vulnerable households, they did not stand in as a full substitute for the market-derived goods and income opportunities curtailed by the lockdowns. Findings from the research to-date suggest two major conclusions: first, the ecological context (including the seasonal timing) of the lockdowns influenced the extent to which forest communities …
