Early Management Of Nutritional Deficiencies To Reduce Musculoskeletal Disabilities Of Pediatric Populations In Africa, Kristin Freitas, Justin Gambini, Curt C. Stilp, Kara Roman, Ryan Mather Dec 2023

Early Management Of Nutritional Deficiencies To Reduce Musculoskeletal Disabilities Of Pediatric Populations In Africa, Kristin Freitas, Justin Gambini, Curt C. Stilp, Kara Roman, Ryan Mather

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

An estimated 1.3 billion individuals live with disabilities across the world, however many of these impairments are developed throughout childhood and could be prevented or treated with prompt and early intervention. In Africa, nutritional deficiencies are a common reason for disability in pediatric populations, often due to a limited supply of resources and diets high in grains and beans. This results in the development of genu varum and valgum deformities, which are most commonly caused by rickets attributed to calcium deficiencies in these areas. The children often go untreated, evidently causing musculoskeletal disabilities and further complications of osteomalacia or fractures …

Critical Edition: A Commentary Upon The Prophecie Of Isaiah, Grace Weaver Dec 2023

Critical Edition: A Commentary Upon The Prophecie Of Isaiah, Grace Weaver

University Honors Papers

A Commentary Upon the Prophecie of Isaiah, written by John Calvin, was first published in French in 1551. John Calvin (b. 7.10.1509 in France; d. 5.27.1564 in Geneva) was a prominent protestant reformer in Europe. Throughout his life, he published apologies and commentaries on many biblical books and religious texts, and became a notorious figurehead of the time. As a significantly controversial figure, Calvin and his work faced censorship and ridicule by Catholics outraged at the growing Christian Reformation of the 16th Century. A little over seven years after its initial publication, a second edition of A Commentary Upon the …

Cited Data (Say So Much): A Case Study On What Data Sources Our Business Researchers Are Citing, Edward Junhao Lim, Jiebei Luo

Published Works

Data is the fuel of business research, but what kind of data do business researchers use, and how do they use it? In this presentation, we reveal the data sources and topics of hundreds of journal articles from two business schools - New York University Stern School of Business and the University of Connecticut School of Business. We analyze the full text of journal articles published between 2020 and 2022 to identify cited data sources and rank the most popular commercial, public, and open datasets. We highlight the top ten data sources for each school and each type of secondary …

Aiming To Connect: Do College Students Of Color Feel As Though They Belong In The Psychology Major?, Sarah Smith Dec 2023

Aiming To Connect: Do College Students Of Color Feel As Though They Belong In The Psychology Major?, Sarah Smith

Honors Program Theses and Projects

At Bridgewater State University (BSU), the psychology department consists of many students of differing backgrounds and demographics. Certain student demographics that can lead to marginalization could potentially influence a student’s connection to their academic program. This project aims to determine if students of color experience a lack of connection within the psychology program. Students in each PSYC 150 (Orientation to the Psychology Major) course at BSU are invited to complete pretest/posttest surveys. We assessed results of surveys completed from Fall 2020-Spring 2023. We hypothesized that students of color would report lower connectedness through measures of sense of belonging, challenges faced, …

Tikaram And Chandrakala Dhananjaya: A Collaborative Couple In Mathematics From Nepal, Deepak Basyal, Brigitte Stenhouse Dec 2023

Tikaram And Chandrakala Dhananjaya: A Collaborative Couple In Mathematics From Nepal, Deepak Basyal, Brigitte Stenhouse

Mathematics and Statistics

Within the history of mathematics and mathematics education in Nepal, Tikaram and Chandrakala Dhananjaya are relatively well-known figures for their two books Śiśubodha Taraṅgiṇī and Līlāvatī. This is despite there being almost no archival or manuscript materials offering a window into their lives: we have no letters, notebooks, diaries, or school records. Rather than focusing on either individual in isolation, in this article we present an argument for considering the Dhananjayas as an analytically indivisible collaborative couple in mathematics. Of the two aforementioned books, one is attributed to Chandrakala and the other to Tikaram; but in fact, both are translations …

Office of the Provost

Although great progress has been made in the diagnostic and treatment options for dyslipidemias, unawareness, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of these disorders remain a significant global health concern. Growth in digital applications and newer models of care provide novel tools to improve the management of chronic conditions such as dyslipidemia. In this review, we discuss the evolving landscape of lipid management in the 21st century, current treatment gaps and possible solutions through digital health and new models of care. Our discussion begins with the history and development of value-based care and the national establishment of quality metrics for various chronic conditions. …

Ai Empire: Unraveling The Interlocking Systems Of Oppression In Generative Ai's Global Order, Jasmina Tacheva, Srividya Ramasubramanian

Media Studies - All Scholarship

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to captivate the collective imagination through the latest generation of generative AI models such as DALL-E and ChatGPT, the dehumanizing and harmful features of the technology industry that have plagued it since its inception only seem to deepen and intensify. Far from a “glitch” or unintentional error, these endemic issues are a function of the interlocking systems of oppression upon which AI is built. Using the analytical framework of “Empire,” this paper demonstrates that we live not simply in the “age of AI” but in the age of AI Empire. Specifically, we show that …

Genomic Analysis Reveals New Species And Subspecies Of Butterflies, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin Dec 2023

Genomic Analysis Reveals New Species And Subspecies Of Butterflies, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Large-scale genomic sequencing of butterfly taxa reveals new findings that are presented here. While we focus on detecting species by comparative genomics and define subspecies as groups of populations genetically differentiated from each other but not as strongly as species (that is, subspecies as species in the making), we report other adjustments to butterfly classification. As a result, 4 subgenera, 11 species, and 6 subspecies are proposed as new. New subgenera are: Rapis Grishin, subgen. n. (type species Papilio rapae Linnaeus, 1758, genus Pieris Schrank, 1801) in Pieridae Swainson, 1820 and Callitera Grishin, subgen. n. (type species Eurygona? pulcherrima …

The Gender Load: Case Assignment Differences In A University Counseling Center, Samantha Kristine Brumble Heder Dec 2023

The Gender Load: Case Assignment Differences In A University Counseling Center, Samantha Kristine Brumble Heder

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has explored the unique case load of mental health professionals working in university counseling centers (UCCs) and is working to better understand therapist burnout. However, there is a gap in the literature surrounding therapist caseload composition and how this composition can impact the experience of therapists in UCCs. Specifically, more research is needed to understand how therapist caseloads might differ by gender identity of therapist. The current study explored this topic by looking at how therapist caseload varies by gender. Retrospective data gathered at a large western United States UCC from 2014 to 2021 was analyzed using Hierarchical …

Addressing Chronic Violence From A Gendered Perspective: Fostering People-Centered Approaches At The National Level (Case Study: Jamaica), Elena B. Stavrevska, Nattecia Nerene Bohardsingh, María Dolores Hernández Montoya, Tania Cecilia Martínez, Briana Mawby, Aliza Carns Dec 2023

Addressing Chronic Violence From A Gendered Perspective: Fostering People-Centered Approaches At The National Level (Case Study: Jamaica), Elena B. Stavrevska, Nattecia Nerene Bohardsingh, María Dolores Hernández Montoya, Tania Cecilia Martínez, Briana Mawby, Aliza Carns

Kroc IPJ Research and Resources

Violence has traditionally been viewed through the lens of armed conflict or specific, concrete violent incidents. However, it is necessary to understand that violence may be a chronic phenomenon— a persistent, deeply ingrained aggression affecting daily lives.

The report makes the case for reconceptualizing violence in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and gender equality fields, building upon feminist conceptions of the continuum of violence to recognize that societal structures, systemic discrimination and even pervasive cultural norms can be sources of violence. This comprehensive view has significant implications for policy, demanding multisectoral strategies that address not just symptoms but the …

A Pilot Study In Healthcare: Salivary Cortisol Levels And Burnout, Hannah Oggerino Dec 2023

A Pilot Study In Healthcare: Salivary Cortisol Levels And Burnout, Hannah Oggerino

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This pilot study investigated levels of burnout in non-clinical workers in a healthcare setting and compared them to salivary cortisol concentrations. Mashlach’s Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS(MP)) was used to evaluate self-perceived levels of burnout and saliva samples were collected to determine cortisol concentrations at four times during participants’ shift. The study was comprised of subjects exposed to multiple high-stress factors, including working in a healthcare setting, post-COVID ramifications, and demographic effects of Montana. The data revealed a statistically significant correlation (P-value < 0.05) between morning salivary cortisol secretion concentrations and mean survey scores. Significance (P-value < 0.05) was also found between the three dimensions measured by the MBI-HSS(MP): burnout, depersonalization, and personal achievement. The study discusses several limitations that should be considered when interpreting results. Findings do suggest that future investigation among this group is needed. Results may help guide interventions that support the mental health and wellbeing of medical support personnel, reduce stress, and avoid burnout.

Gravity Fed Bathymetry Agnostic Wave System Innovation & Responsive Surf Fin Development, Erik Casagranda Dec 2023

Gravity Fed Bathymetry Agnostic Wave System Innovation & Responsive Surf Fin Development, Erik Casagranda

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This project investigates the integration of hydrodynamically responsive surf fins into wake-surf boards, focusing on optimizing performance for wake-surf waves by utilizing fluid dynamic and spring force principles. Additionally, the research explores the development of a novel stationary wave system, adopting a 'Gravity Fed Bathymetry Agnostic' approach, enabling year-round surfing in indoor facilities and addressing the limitations of existing manmade wave technologies. The initial phase involved testing the feasibility of a scaled model for the gravity-fed bathymetry-agnostic wave system. While the wave system demonstrated success on a model scale, an evaluation of its feasibility at full scale was conducted, and …
