Difference And Alterity: On Hegel And Deleuze, Thomas Szwedska
Difference And Alterity: On Hegel And Deleuze, Thomas Szwedska
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a study in ontology. Its central question is: can we think difference without alterity and still think of difference as an essential determination of what something is? I answer that it is possible to ontologically disambiguate difference from alterity. The central thesis of my dissertation is that thinking difference without otherness not only produces meaningful differences, but if we are committed to a complete understanding of what difference is and how it functions, then it is necessary to account for this determination. Thus, I find two cases in the history of philosophy which do think difference without …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by leukocytosis with left-shifted neutrophilia, basophilia, eosinophilia, and variable thrombocytosis. However, extremely rare cases of patients with CML without significant leukocytosis and thrombocytosis (aleukemic phase [ALP] CML, or CML-ALP) have been reported. Due to its rarity and limited awareness, there remains a significant knowledge gap concerning the pathologic diagnosis, disease progression, and optimal patient management and outcomes. In this multi-institutional study, we investigated 31 patients with CML-ALP. Over half (54.8%) of patients had a history of or concurrent hematopoietic or nonhematopoietic malignancies. At time of diagnosis of CML-ALP, approximately 26.7% of patients exhibited neutrophilia, …

Wind Erosion After Fire In Western Australia - Frequently Asked Questions (Faqs), Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Natural resources factsheets
These are some common questions after serious fires in the agricultural areas of south-west Western Australia. Staff of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), agronomists and farmers with experience have contributed to the answers.
Please note that these answers are general in nature, and land managers wanting advice for a specific property will need to ask local professionals or experienced land managers.
For more information about recovering from fire and wind erosion, see the DPIRD website.

Honeysuckles & Irises: Effigies Of The Land, Ami` L. Hanna-Huff
English Creative Writing Theses
Here is a memoir of my paternal line through the lens of my Great-Grandmother and myself. A reclamation of the land I hail from and a connection to a history previously felt distant, this examination of race and gender explicitly focused on the African American Southern female experience; I try to make sense of the juxtaposing positions in our lives. The culture built from its creation through Tennessee personified. Here, I integrate history and theory with lyrics and prose to experience the eighty-one years of progress brought between our births and the lingering anxiety of slavery. My great-grandmother, Hazel Irene …
The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow
The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow
Honors Theses
21,625 fans packed the confines of Brooks stadium on September 3, 2022, for a clash between the Army Black Knights football team and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team. This was a new record at Brooks stadium, and was followed with just 12,261 the next week vs. Gardner Webb. Meanwhile, a 2022 Coastal Carolina Women’s Soccer game draws in less than 200 spectators. On the surface level, the disparity of these numbers appears confusing and unconnected to one another, however there are a multitude of factors that go into the number of people who show up to a particular sporting …

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations
Headache is a leading cause of disability and suffering. One major challenge in developing device treatments is demonstrating their efficacy given devices' often-high placebo rate. This paper reviews the importance of validating sham devices as part of finalizing the design for larger-scale prospective randomized controlled trials in patients with chronic headache as well as the results of a prospective, single-blind trial to validate two potential sham noninvasive thermal nerve block devices. Study participants were trained to self-administer thermal nerve block treatment using sham devices in an office visit. Two different sham systems with different temperature profiles were assessed. Devices were …

Terriers Unleashed, Allison C. Douglass
Student Scholarship
This zine was created in Fall 2023 by the students in English 346: American Political Rhetoric with Dr. Douglass, and it captures their engagement with important issues at Wofford. Often, when we think of “politics,” we are thinking about party politics surrounding systems of state governance. However, this class was interested in politics as a broader category of activities that influence decision-making within communities. Our class asked: What does the Wofford we want to attend look like, and what changes could we advocate for in order to move toward that Wofford? Each student crafted a message intended to influence our …

A Scoping Review Of Wrist-Worn Wearables In Education, Noah L. Schroeder, William L. Romine, Sidney E. Kemp
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Within the past ten years, the public's use of wearables, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, has greatly increased. Recently, researchers have published systematic reviews to examine how wearables are used in educational settings. However, not all wearables are alike. Head-mounted wearables and exoskeletons may be viewed as invasive, whereas smartwatches and wristbands are commonly worn by the public. In this scoping review, we systematically review the literature around wrist-worn wearables (WWs) in educational settings. Our systematic search revealed 1,932 unique research items, of which 46 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Our findings reveal the trends in the …

Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter
Environmental Ozone Exposure, Gestational Health, And The Lung-Placental Axis, Russell Hunter
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Adverse gestational outcomes of pregnancy are a globally occurring threat to fetomaternal health, with limited clinical prognostic and intervention strategies aside from premature labor induction. Epidemiological data shows strong correlations between gestational exposure to air pollution and the incidence of adverse gestational outcomes. The research presented here was designed to evaluate potential murine models of gestational exposure, as well as quantify maternal cardiovascular damage therein. These studies employ radiotelemetry, echocardiography, single cell RNA-sequencing, and untargeted lipidomic analyses in efforts to study these effects. Results implicate cardiovascular responses to mid-gestational ozone exposure as evidenced by decreased maternal cardiac output and increased …

Clearing The Hurdles: Examining The Development Of High-Speed Rail Systems In The United States Of America, Shanice Tan
Honors Theses
In today’s world where globalization is rapidly growing, the role of an effective transportation system is crucial for societal and economic advancement. Among the various modes of travel, high-speed rail has emerged as a transformative force, reshaping the landscape of intercity connectivity, economic progress, and environmental sustainability. You would expect that the United States, as one of the most developed countries in the world, would have huge advancements in their high-speed rail systems for better travel choices and improved mobility for their citizens. However, it is found that the United States only has two high-speed rails currently operating and two …

The 2005 Bosnian Law On Defense; A Policy Change Case Study, Gregory D. Vuksich
The 2005 Bosnian Law On Defense; A Policy Change Case Study, Gregory D. Vuksich
Political Science ETDs
The Dayton Peace Accord (DPA) in 1995 ended the civil war in Bosnia and Hercegovina and established a constitution for the newly institutionalizing state. It permitted the three ethnicities – Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs – to retain their wartime armed forces in place under ethnic command, a prerogative the Serbs guarded strenuously. International organizations, however, sought a single, multiethnic military institution for the whole of the country. In 2005, however, the Serbs reversed their opposition and agreed to the international organization preference. This study explores why Bosnia’s Serbian community reversed its earlier and acceded to the creation of a single …
Evaluating The Impact Of Biosimilars In The Drug Market, Olivia Sitter
Evaluating The Impact Of Biosimilars In The Drug Market, Olivia Sitter
Theses
Drug pricing has increase to the point where many Americans are unable to afford prescriptions for both long- and short-term diseases. Within the last decade, U.S lawmakers have changed legislation so that biosimilars can be added into the drug market in hopes of creating affordable products. Biosimilars allow more options for consumers and add increased competition for manufactures which should decrease the overall price of the original biopharmaceutical the biosimilar is modeled after. In current research, the impact of biosimilars within the European Union has been investigated heavily, but the US approved biosimilars much later and there is less information …

Avoiding Burnout: Newsletters That Promote Special Education Teachers Well-Being, Kayler Knott
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
With the alarming rate of teachers leaving the educational field, there is a definitive shortage of people entering the field of special education. Educators need access to different tools and resources that will allow them to know about other things that can help limit or reduce the strain of things causing teacher burnout. By sending out these resources to educators and informing them of different tools they can use, we can help alleviate teacher burnout, keep more educators in the fields, and stop losing our young teachers just entering before they have even completed student teaching experiences. Each of these …

Implementation Of Fast-Track Triage Process To Improve Ambulance Patient Offloading Time (Apot) In A Psychiatric Emergency Services (Pes) Unit, Oke Augustine Umeugoji
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract.
Background.
Ambulance delays in hospital EDs have recently been significant in the United States. This delay has been attributed to emergency department overcrowding, a record number of 911 calls, a shortage of ED staff (doctors and nurses), and poor resources available in the communities as alternatives to an ED visit. Local Emergency Medical Service Authorities (LEMSA) monitor and determine the community standards for measuring ambulance offload delays (AOD), usually in minutes.
Problem.
Lengthy ambulance patient offload times and their subsequent impact on EMS have been significant all around the state of California as well as nationwide. The ambulance delay …
Implementation Of Implicit Bias Training In A Doctor Of Nurse Practitioner Program, Macdana Selecon
Implementation Of Implicit Bias Training In A Doctor Of Nurse Practitioner Program, Macdana Selecon
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Implicit bias in healthcare delivery refers to the unconscious mental associations healthcare providers make about patients from various social groups. Numerous studies suggest implicit bias contributes to health disparities primarily amongst marginalized groups. Furthermore, patients report a lower quality of communication from healthcare providers with higher implicit racial bias. In 2021, Assembly Bill 1407 (Nurses: Implicit Bias Courses Act) was passed to address the negative impact of bias on patient outcomes and requires California nursing schools to provide implicit bias training for nursing students.
Problem: All graduate nursing programs do not provide implicit bias (IB) training. As a result, …

Here, we present a protocol to isolate progenitor cells from mouse epididymal visceral adipose tissue and construct bulk RNA and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin with sequencing (ATAC-seq) libraries. We describe steps for adipose tissue collection, cell isolation, and cell staining and sorting. We then detail procedures for both ATAC-seq and RNA sequencing library construction. This protocol can also be applied to other tissues and cell types directly or with minor modifications. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Liu et al.
