In the last five years, the Fintech sector has thrived in India, with Machine Learning (ML) driven credit scoring based on alternative data, emerging as a growing segment. The credit scoring industry in India needs to be viewed in light of a careful examination of rights, inclusion, appropriate safeguards and discrimination, currently missing from the discourse and practices. In this paper, we explain how ML-based credit scoring works, and the regulatory and commercial factors that have enabled and impeded its growth in India. Through legal and technological analysis, richened by insights from qualitative interviews with entrepreneurs and practitioners, we provide …

Bringing Shadow Libraries Out Of Legal Shadows: An Opportunity For The Delhi High Court, Rahul Bajaj, Anchal Bhateja
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
At the heart of the copyright bargain is the need to strike a balance between fostering creativity, by incentivizing producers of intellectual property and promoting the interests of the public at large. These two are often in tension with each other. Some cases bring this tension into sharp focus. The ongoing litigation in the Delhi high Court, on the legality of shadow libraries - Libgen and Sci Hub - is one such case. The case has seminal importance for ensuring that the right to education is duly respected and fulfilled.
In this paper, we argue that this litigation offers the …
Do Judges Understand Technology? How Attorneys And Advocates View Judicial Responsibility In Cyberstalking And Cyberharassment Cases, Kateryna Kaplun
Do Judges Understand Technology? How Attorneys And Advocates View Judicial Responsibility In Cyberstalking And Cyberharassment Cases, Kateryna Kaplun
International Journal on Responsibility
As new technologies emerge and are increasingly used to commit interpersonal cybercrimes like cyberstalking and cyberharassment, the legal system lags in assisting victims in obtaining justice in these types of experiences. This qualitative research study explores how attorney and advocate interviewees from Illinois, New Jersey, and New York view judges’ responsibility to the law in cyberstalking and cyberharassment cases. This study finds three themes: judges’ lack of understanding of technology and its harms, discretion, and law on the books versus law in action as important factors and frameworks that contribute to why judges do not consider the importance of technology …

Blended Hdr-Sdr Operation, Chien-Hui Wen, Hsin-Hsueh Li
Defensive Publications Series
It is common in smartphone applications to have a window of HDR (high dynamic range) content against an SDR (standard dynamic range) background. Due to differences in supply voltages and refresh rates between HDR and SDR, luminance can be discontinuous at the HDR-SDR boundary, resulting in visual anomalies, flicker, and perceptual difficulties. This disclosure describes techniques to provide a smooth HDR-SDR transition during blended HDR-SDR operation. A raw gamma curve, e.g., as set by the display manufacturer, is recomputed such that a target luminance is met at a different refresh rate. A smooth SDR-HDR transition is obtained by applying the …
Fusing Voice And Gesture Input To Improve Text Transcription Accuracy, D Shin
Fusing Voice And Gesture Input To Improve Text Transcription Accuracy, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
While speech input, detected by on-device microphones, enables users to provide voice commands or other text at a higher speed than typing, the accuracy of transcription can suffer in certain environments, e.g., in the presence of background noise. Gesture input via a virtual keyboard is convenient but slower and also prone to errors, e.g., when a gesture resolves to multiple words. Per techniques of this disclosure, a user can provide spoken and gesture input at the same time to a user device. Each input is converted to text separately. The stereo text stream is time aligned using word-to-word distance to …

Privacy-Friendly Personalization Of Llm Responses Using Hashed Entity Injection, Keun Soo Yim
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes techniques that enable a server-side large language model to provide personalized responses to user queries while protecting user personal data that is used in a request sent to the LLM from a user device. With user permission, entities from personal data stored locally on a user device are retrieved and hashed using a hash function at the local device. The hashed values are injected in a request sent to the LLM that is located in the cloud or other network location distinct from the local device. The LLM generates a response including one or more hashed values …

Quick response (QR) codes enable customers to easily identify their digital payment identifier of a merchant to initiate a payment. A merchant may display multiple different QR codes associated with different merchant service providers. The presence of multiple QR codes that lead to different payment apps may prevent the user from making a payment using their preferred payment method, e.g., that provides rewards or other benefits. Receiving payments via multiple service providers can also prevent a merchant from receiving merchant benefits being offered by particular payment service providers. This disclosure introduces techniques that recognize that a QR code associated with …
Sensor-Encoded Generative Language Modeling For High Resolution Occupancy Sensing And Building Control, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
Traditional techniques for generating indoor occupancy maps involve the use of a network of distributed sensors to determine occupancy and/or movement within a facility to derive actionable insights and inform automated control mechanisms. These approaches are constrained by their ability to provide only coarse and often binary data—essentially, determining whether someone is present at a location or not. A more sophisticated approach that can capture data on occupancy with both spatial and temporal details can enable finer control and more nuanced automation triggers. This disclosure describes a large occupancy model that extends large language model (LLM) techniques with an occupancy …
