Factors Influencing High School Physical Education Teachers' Content Selection, Olivia J. Gillispie Jan 2023

Factors Influencing High School Physical Education Teachers' Content Selection, Olivia J. Gillispie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is limited research that has examined the factors that influence the selection of content for high school physical education. Addressing this gap in the literature is important, as those decisions influence student attitudes and engagement in physical education. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, this study aimed to explore what factors influence high school physical education teachers’ decision-making processes when selecting content to include in their curriculum (phase one). Second, this study investigated the facilitators and barriers to selecting and teaching the content areas suggested in the SHAPE America (2013) High School Grade-Level Outcomes (phase two).

Accessing The Relative Sustainability Of Point-Of-Use Water Disinfection Technologies Through Costs And Environmental Impacts, Bright C. Elijah Jan 2023

Accessing The Relative Sustainability Of Point-Of-Use Water Disinfection Technologies Through Costs And Environmental Impacts, Bright C. Elijah

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

According to the World Health Organization, 785 million people lack access to basic drinking water facilities, and 144 million people rely on surface water which is prone to microbial contamination. Point-of-use (POU) water disinfection technologies can be adopted to help address these issues by treating water at the household level; however, navigating various POU disinfection technologies for a given water source or location can be difficult. While numerous conventional POU technologies exist (e.g., boiling water, POU chlorination), new emerging POU technologies (e.g., using novel materials or advanced processes) have been coined by developers to be lower cost with higher treatment …

Web applications are important to protect from threats that will compromise sensitive information. Web vulnerability scanners are a prominent tool for this purpose, as they can be utilized to find vulnerabilities in a web application to be rectified. Two popular open-source tools were compared head-to-head, OWASP ZAP and Snort. The performance metrics evaluated were SQLi attacks detected, false positives, false negatives, processing time, and memory usage. OWASP ZAP yielded fewer false positives and had less processing time. Snort used significantly fewer memory resources. The internal workings of ZAP’s Active Scan feature and Snort’s implementation of the Boyer-Moore and Aho-Corasick algorithms …

Fermion Encodings And Algorithms For Quantum Simulation, Riley W. Chien Jan 2023

Fermion Encodings And Algorithms For Quantum Simulation, Riley W. Chien

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The study of the properties of quantum mechanical systems of many particles occupies a central role in condensed matter physics, high-energy physics, and quantum chemistry. In recent decades, developments in quantum information theory have suggested that quantum computers could become an especially useful tool for studying such quantum systems.

In this thesis, we address the additional challenges for quantum simulations posed by particles which are fermionic in nature, namely those caused by the nonlocal fermionic statistics. In particular, we study the encodings of fermionic degrees of freedom into the qubits of a quantum computer. We focus on finding a scheme …

Are Epicuticular Waxes A Surface Defense Comparable To Trichomes? A Test Using Two Solanum Species And A Specialist Herbivore., Sakshi Watts, Rupesh R. Kariyat

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Although plants possess a suite of structural defenses, most studies have focused on trichomes. Trichomes can have both pre- and post-ingestive effects and have been consistently found to reduce herbivory. Along with trichomes, a few studies have focused on epicuticular waxes as an important defense; however, manipulated comparisons examining herbivore growth and development is limited. In this study, using two Solanum species (Solanum glaucescens and Solanum macrocarpon) that vary in both defenses, we tested the hypothesis that variation in defenses will affect herbivore feeding, primarily by restricting feeding commencement. We used electron microscopy together with a series of plant- and …
