Can A Christian Be A Lawyer Or Can Both God And Jackson Browne Be Right, Randy Lee Jan 2023

Can A Christian Be A Lawyer Or Can Both God And Jackson Browne Be Right, Randy Lee

Touro Law Review

Jesus’s final command at His final meal before His death was to “love one another.” No less than Jackson Browne insisted that the ultimate absurdity in an absurd world is a “lawyer in love.” Thus, Jesus has commanded that even lawyers must love, but Jackson Browne has emphatically stressed that lawyers are incapable of love. Given the apparent conflict for lawyers between these two observations of Jesus and Jackson Browne, one might wonder whether one can be a Christian and a lawyer both. Can both God and Jackson Browne be right? Of course, the government could seemingly make the answer …

Is There A Fundamental Right To Privacy When An Educational Institution Requires A Student To Disclose Proof Of His Or Her Vaccination Status?, Mary D. Fatscher

Touro Law Review

In 2020, the coronavirus disease (“COVID-19”) dominated the world. Although the public has progressively become more informed about the disease and how to safeguard itself, challenges persist as there is still much unknown. Aside from wearing masks, social distancing, and despite its undetermined consequences, the COVID-19 vaccination has emerged as a primary solution to substantially reducing the incidence and severity of the virus in our country. Many COVID-19 vaccine mandates were initiated once three pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies including Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson received Emergency Use Authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”).

New York Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 Proceedings: A Proposal To Better Protect The Best Interests Of An Alleged Incapacitated Person, Casey Marsh

Touro Law Review

Guardianship proceedings under New York Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 are intended to protect the personal needs and property management of an alleged incapacitated person. A guardian appointed for a person is responsible for making decisions in line with the best interests and wishes of his or her ward. While guardians serve a very important purpose, the current procedures of guardianship proceedings allow too much room for family members to bring a proceeding without the alleged incapacitated person’s best interests in mind. Often, people bring guardianship proceedings to fish for information on family members or to circumvent a future Surrogate’s …

Ecuadorian Gravel Pack Spring Water Intakes, Derek Ten Pas, Julie Wildschut, Robert Hoeksema, Bruce Rydbeck, Chris Visscher Jan 2023

Ecuadorian Gravel Pack Spring Water Intakes, Derek Ten Pas, Julie Wildschut, Robert Hoeksema, Bruce Rydbeck, Chris Visscher

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This paper describes the basic design concept to design and build a type of spring water intake. The spring protection method bears similarity to a gravel pack well albeit constructed horizontally rather than the vertical construction of a gravel pack well. The design approach includes:

  • collection of spring water subterranean using the aquifer and surrounding soil to filter the water supply,
  • use of gravel pack to retain the surrounding aquifer materials and soil structure in place while providing an easy flow path for water to enter a slotted collector pipe and flow to a receiving tank without impounding spring water, …

Analytic And Numerical Calculation Of Collider Luminosity With Crab Dynamics, H. Huang, T. Satogata, Y. Zhang, Y. Roblin, F. Lin, S. Zhao

Physics Faculty Publications

For an integral part of electron-ion collider (EIC) design, the crab crossing scheme provides a head-on collision for beams with a nonzero crossing angle. Recently we provided a framework for accurate numerical simulations of beam-beam effects with crabbing crossing dynamics. The framework was implemented in a simulation code package named “CASA BeamBeam”. We offer com-prehensive formulas for calculation of collider luminosity for various cases in the code package. The luminosity calculation module of CASA Beam-Beam now includes the hourglass effect, the beam-tilt effects and the beam offset effect. The benchmarking results show good agreement between the numerical calculation and analytic …

Numerical Simulations Of Radiation Reaction Using Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac Formalism, E. Rogers, B. Terzic, E. Breen, E. Johnson, G. Krafft

Physics Faculty Publications

An accelerating charged particle emits electromagnetic radiation. The motion of the particle is further damped via self-interaction with its own radiation. For relativistic particles, the subsequent motion is described via a correction to the Lorentz force, known as the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac force. The aim of this research is to use the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac force to computationally simulate the radiation damping that occurs during nonlinear inverse Compton scattering. We build on our previous work and the code which simulates single-emission inverse Compton scattering to incorporate the effect of multiple emissions, thereby modeling the radiation reaction.

Rapidity-Only Tmd Factorization At One Loop, Ian Balitsky Jan 2023

Rapidity-Only Tmd Factorization At One Loop, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

Typically, a production of a particle with a small transverse momentum in hadron-hadron collisions is described by CSS-based TMD factorization at moderate Bjorken xB ~ 1 and by kT-factorization at small xB. A uniform description valid for all xB is provided by rapidity-only TMD factorization developed in a series of recent papers at the tree level. In this paper the rapidity-only TMD factorization for particle production by gluon fusion is extended to the one-loop level.

The polarized cross-section ratio σLT′/σ0 from hard exclusive π−Δ++ electroproduction off an unpolarized hydrogen target has been extracted based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.2  GeV/10.6  GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The study, which provides the first observation of this channel in the deep-inelastic regime, focuses on very forward-pion kinematics in the valence regime, and photon virtualities ranging from 1.5  GeV2 up to 7  GeV2. The reaction provides a novel access to the d-quark content of the nucleon and to p→Δ++ transition generalized parton …

Two-Point Correlator Of Twist-2 Light-Ray Operators In N=Sym In Bfkl Approximation, Ian Balitsky, Vladimir Kazakov, Evgeny Sobko Jan 2023

Two-Point Correlator Of Twist-2 Light-Ray Operators In N=Sym In Bfkl Approximation, Ian Balitsky, Vladimir Kazakov, Evgeny Sobko

Physics Faculty Publications

We generalize local operators of the leading twist-2 of 𝒩 = SYM theory to the case of complex Lorentz spin j using principal series representation of sl(2, R). We give the direct computation of correlation function of two such non-local operators in the BFKL regime when j → 1. The correlator appears to have the expected conformal coordinate dependence governed by the anomalous dimension of twist-2 operator in NLO BFKL approximation predicted by Kotikov and Lipatov.

Superheating Field In Superconductors With Nanostructured Surfaces, W. P. M. R. Pathirana, A. Gurevich Jan 2023

Superheating Field In Superconductors With Nanostructured Surfaces, W. P. M. R. Pathirana, A. Gurevich

Physics Faculty Publications

We report calculations of a dc superheating field Hsh in superconductors with nanostructured surfaces. Numerical simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations were performed for a superconductor with an inhomogeneous impurity concentration, a thin superconducting layer on top of another superconductor, and superconductor-insulator-superconductor (S-I-S) multilayers. The superheating field was calculated taking into account the instability of the Meissner state with a nonzero wavelength along the surface, which is essential for realistic values of the GL parameter κ. Simulations were done for the materials parameters of Nb and Nb3Sn at different values of κ and the mean free paths. We …

Surface Properties And Rf Performance Of Vapor Diffused Nb₃Sn On Nb After Sequential Anneals Below 1000 °C, Jayendrika K. Tiskumara, Jean R. Delayen, U. Pudasaini, G. Eremeev

Physics Faculty Publications

Nb₃Sn is a next-generation superconducting material that can be used for future superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerator cavities, promising better performance, cost reduction, and higher operating temperature than Nb. The Sn vapor diffusion method is currently the most preferred and successful technique to coat niobium cavities with Nb₃Sn. Among post-coating treatments to optimize the coating quality, higher temperature annealing without Sn is known to degrade Nb₃Sn because of Sn loss. We have investigated Nb₃Sn/Nb samples briefly annealed at 800-1000 °C, for 10 and 20 minutes to potentially improve the surface to enhance the performance of Nb₃Sn-coated cavities. Following the sample studies, …

Magnetic Field Mapping Of A Large-Grain 1.3 Ghz Single-Cell Cavity, Ishwari Prasad Parajuli, Jean R. Delayen, Alex V. Gurevich, Gianluigi Ciovati

Physics Faculty Publications

A new magnetic field mapping system for 1.3 GHz single-cell cavities was developed in order to reveal the impact of ambient magnetic field and temperature gradients during cool-down on the flux trapping phenomenon. Measurements were done at 2 K for different cool-down conditions of a large-grain cavity before and after 120 °C bake. The fraction of applied magnetic field trapped in the cavity walls was ~ 50% after slow cool-down and ~ 20% after fast cool-down. The results showed a weak correlation between between trapped flux locations and hot-spots causing the high-field Q-slope. The results also showed an increase of …

We report the total and differential cross sections for J/ψ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, t. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward (t=0) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding J/ψ photoproduction and its relation to the J/ψ-proton interaction. These measurements of J/ψ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical …

Physics Faculty Publications

Recent advancement in superconducting radio frequency cavity processing techniques, with diffusion of impurities within the RF penetration depth, resulted in high quality factor with increase in quality factor with increasing accelerating gradient. The increase in quality factor is the result of a decrease in the surface resistance as a result of nonmagnetic impurities doping and change in electronic density of states. The fundamental understanding of the dependence of surface resistance on frequency and surface preparation is still an active area of research. Here, we present the result of RF measurements of the TEM modes in a coaxial half-wave niobium cavity …

Full Treatment Of The Thrust Distribution In Single Inclusive E⁺E⁻ → H X Processes, M. Boglione, Andrea Simonelli Jan 2023

Full Treatment Of The Thrust Distribution In Single Inclusive E⁺E⁻ → H X Processes, M. Boglione, Andrea Simonelli

Physics Faculty Publications

Extending the transverse momentum dependent factorization to thrust dependent observables entails a series of difficulties, ultimately associated to the behavior of soft radiation. As a consequence, the definition of the transverse momentum dependent functions has to be revised, while preserving (and possibly extending) their universality properties. Moreover, the regularization of the rapidity divergences generates non trivial correlations between rapidity and thrust. In this paper, we show how to deal with these correlations in a consistent treatment of the thrust dependence of e+e− → h X cross section, where the hadron transverse momentum is measured with respect to …

Eic 197 Mhz Crab Cavity Rf Optimization, Zenghai Li, Subashini U. De Silva, Jean R. Delayen, Robert A. Rimmer, Qiong Wu, Binping Xiao, Wencan Xu

Physics Faculty Publications

Crab cavities, operating at 197 MHz and 394 MHz respectively, will be used to compensate the loss of luminosity due to a 25 mrad crossing angle at the interaction point in the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). Both crab cavities are of the RF Dipole (RFD) shape. To meet the machine design requirements, there are a few important cavity design considerations that need to be addressed. First, to achieve stable cavity operation at the design voltages, cavity geometry details must be optimized to suppress potential multipacting. Incorporating strong HOM damping in the cavity design is required for the beam stability and …

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5 GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson ρ(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t dependence of natural- and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to …

New results for the exclusive and quasifree cross sections off neutrons bound in deuterium 𝛾vn(p) → pπ− (p) are presented over a wide final state hadron angle range with a kinematic coverage of the invariant mass (W) up to 1.825 GeV and the four-momentum transfer squared (Q2) from 0.4 to 1.0 GeV2. The exclusive structure functions were extracted and their Legendre moments were obtained. Final-state-interaction contributions have been kinematically separated from the extracted quasifree cross sections off bound neutrons solely based on the analysis of the experimental data. These new results will serve as …

Scattered Spectra From Inverse Compton Sources Operating At High Laser Fields And High Electron Energies, Geoffrey A. Krafft, Balša Terzić, Erik Johnson, G. Wilson

Physics Faculty Publications

As Compton x-ray and gamma-ray sources become more prevalent, to understand their performance in a precise way, it becomes important to be able to compute the distribution of scattered photons precisely. For example, codes have been developed at Old Dominion University which were used to understand the performance of the Dresden Compton Source in detail. An ideal model would (i) include the full Compton effect frequency relations between incident and scattered photons, (ii) allow the field strength to be large enough that nonlinear effects are captured, and (iii) allow the effects of electron beam emittance to be introduced and studied. …

The non-singlet helicity quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon are determined from lattice QCD, by jointly leveraging pseudo-distributions and the distillation spatial smearing paradigm. A Lorentz decomposition of appropriately isolated space-like matrix elements reveals pseudo-distributions that contain information on the leading-twist helicity PDFs, as well as an invariant amplitude that induces an additional z2 contamination of the leading-twist signal. An analysis of the short-distance behavior of the space-like matrix elements using matching coefficients computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) exposes the desired PDF up to this additional z2 contamination. Due to the non-conservation of the axial current, …

Basics Of Factorization In A Scalar Yukawa Field Theory, F. Aslan, L. Gamberg, J.O. Gonzalez-Hernandez, T. Rainaldi, T. C. Rogers

Physics Faculty Publications

The factorization theorems of QCD apply equally well to most simple quantum field theories that require renormalization but where direct calculations are much more straightforward. Working with these simpler theories is convenient for stress testing the limits of the factorization program and for examining general properties of the parton density functions or other correlation functions that might be necessary for a factorized description of a process. With this view in mind, we review the steps of factorization in a real scalar Yukawa field theory for both deep inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections. In the case of …

Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) allows one to probe generalized parton distributions describing the 3D structure of the nucleon. We report the first measurement of the DVCS beam-spin asymmetry using the CLAS12 spectrometer with a 10.2 and 10.6 GeV electron beam scattering from unpolarized protons. The results greatly extend the Q2 and Bjorken-x phase space beyond the existing data in the valence region and provide 1600 new data points measured with unprecedented statistical uncertainty, setting new, tight constraints for future phenomenological studies.

We report radio-frequency measurements of quality factors and temperature mapping of a nitrogen doped Nb superconducting RF cavity. Cavity cutouts of hot and cold spots were studied with low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary electron microscopy. Temperature mapping revealed a substantial reduction of the residual resistance upon cooling the cavity with a greater temperature gradient and hysteretic losses at the quench location, pointing to trapped vortices as the dominant source of residual surface resistance.Analysis of the tunneling spectra in the framework of a proximity effect theory shows that hot spots have a reduced pair …
