Progress On The Maya Murals Of Bonampak

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The February 1996 issue of INSIGHTS reported that FARMS was assisting Yale University and the National Geographic Society in photographing the deteriorating Maya murals at the Bonampak site in Chiapas, Mexico. Using a multispectral filter provided by FARMS, the Bonampak team captured on film vivid details of the mural scenes otherwise obscured by centuries of decay and incrustation.

New Booklet Explains Basic Lds Beliefs

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

FARMS and the BYU Religious Studies Center have jointly published a booklet that discusses some of the beliefs of members of the LDS Church. The contributors to Latter-day Christianity: Ten Basic Issues hope these discussions will, first, help Latter-day Saints who want to explain their beliefs to their friends of other faiths and, second, be useful to people outside the LDS Church who want a simple and clear statement of those beliefs from informed insiders.

This article presents a design, development, and testing process of a deployable right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) helical antenna for a small satellite in the UHF band. In the stowed configuration the antenna is 5cm and deploys to an operational length of 74cm. Deployment of the antenna is controlled by a DC motor and once released, extends to its full shape under spring power, a 3-turn jack-in-the-box design. The antenna is tuned and matched to correct frequency bandwidth and features an optical deployment confirmation circuit. Low Earth Orbit satellites impart a Doppler shift on transmitted signals. This Doppler shift imposes challenges on the receiver design. Optimum band-edge filters can measure the Doppler offset, and frequency-locked loops (FLLs) containing them can correct the Doppler offset. However, optimum band-edge filters require knowledge of the structure of the signal of interest in order to compute the filter coefficients. Prefilter delay-multiply elements can be used to generate a Doppler tone that can be placed in an FLL, but this technique also requires knowledge of the signal structure and is not well suited for frequency shift keyed signals. Organophosphorus compounds (OPs), both nerve agents and insecticides, may induce damage leading to long-term neurological deficits. Oxime 20, the lead compound from a platform of substituted phenoxyalkyl pyridinium oximes (US Patent 9,227,937), is an oxime that reactivates OP-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and has displayed neuroprotection within the brain of rats in in vivo tests where the currently approved treatment, pralidoxime (2-PAM), has not. This research investigated the neuroprotective effect of novel oxime therapy. Gene expression in rat piriform cortex was analyzed to determine if neurotoxicity, stress, and synaptic plasticity-associated genes were down-regulated by Oxime 20 following a sublethal dose of sarin …

Our laboratory has invented a series of oxime acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivators (US Patent 9,227,937) that enter the brain, reduce time to cessation of seizure-like activities, and prevent organophosphorus compound (OP) neuropathology, not seen with the current U.S. approved AChE reactivator, pralidoxime (2-PAM). Thus, 2-PAM fails to protect the brain against damage and long-term cognitive and behavioral deficits seen in humans after OP exposure. However, the mechanisms by which these novel oximes provide central neuroprotection through preservation of neuronal cell structures from damage in a rat model are not fully understood by AChE reactivation alone. In a democracy, public opinion inevitably has an impact on decisions made by national leaders. With this in mind, this research provides survey data and analysis that establishes a quantitative baseline of the public’s general tolerance of space warfare. More specifically, a range of hypothetical scenarios in which an adversary to the United States has acted provocatively were presented and respondents’ willingness to support a first-strike or respond to an adversarial first-strike was measured. Initial study was conducted to determine if the public is more or less willing to support engagement in space as compared to other domains.

The Red Hills Region of southern Alabama, northern Florida, and southwestern Georgia is one of the most prominent areas in the United States for conducting prescribed fire research and is the birthplace of fire ecology. The culture of prescribed burning in the Red Hills has been influenced by multiple ethnic groups, including the Seminole and Creek nations, Black landowners, and White researchers. Habitat fragmentation and human-elephant conflict (HEC) are two factors that have caused harm to both Asian elephants and humans in Thailand. Think Elephants International (TEI) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to educate children on these issues to encourage more interest in and knowledge about elephant conservation in the youth of Thailand. TEI has developed a systematic education initiative and established a method for assessing the program’s efficacy using a pre- and post-survey. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials that offer modularity through diverse combinations of metal nodes and linkers, as well as tailorable surface chemistry and structure, along with tunable conductivity. The integration of these framework materials onto fibers can result in robust and flexible MOF-based textiles with enhanced functionality and applicability. This thesis illustrates the versatility of multifunctional MOF-integrated textile systems, showcasing their unique properties and the advantages of installing MOFs at the fiber level.

A number of stakeholders in the international community have advocated for the establishment of restrictions on the development and acquisition of unmanned vessels capable of contributing to naval warfare. These efforts are often based on the notion that the law did not anticipate the existence and use of unmanned vessels, and therefore the drafters of applicable legal frameworks—including the longstanding international law definition of a “warship”—did not consider them. The term “rhizosphere” describes the dynamic interface between plant roots and soil influenced by root exudates. It is a hotspot of microbial activity, plant-microbe, and microbe-microbe interactions. Distinct variations in bacterial diversity are thought to be driven by plant root exudates. However, the molecular details of these processes still remain unclear.

I addressed this gap by focusing on two strains, Pseudomonas synxantha 2-79 and Burkholderia lata 383, representing diverse groups of Gammaproteobacteria comprised of species with environmental, agricultural, and medical significance. This project seeks to identify methods authors have used to integrate their traumatic experiences. My work will analyze the genre of War Literature and specific authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Kurt Vonnegut to explore the way writers describe the trauma of combat. Using insights from neuroscience and psychology, I will expand the field of Cognitive Literary Studies from a focus on the reader to a focus on the writer by linking neurological functions with narrative tools.

Examining Access To Decent Work Among Women Veterans: A Psychology Of Working Theory Perspective, Rebecca C. Gaines

The present study investigated predictors of decent work among a sample of women Veterans (N = 354), grounded in the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT). A structural equation model demonstrated that women Veterans’ experiences of marginalization, economic constraints, work volition, and career adaptability all directly predicted their ability to secure decent work, and economic constraints and marginalization experiences indirectly predicted decent work via work volition. Proactive personality was additionally examined as a moderator variable and did not significantly moderate any model paths; however, it was found to be a unique predictor of decent work and work volition, as well …

This research examines and discusses multi-species relationships between humans and non-humans, specific to Equine Assisted Therapy facilities. Anthropocentric views are common within human-animal relationships, due to colonial and Eurocentric hierarchical perspectives. Through the identification of contributions made by both humans and non-humans commensal and mutualistic relationships can be achieved. Within Equine Assisted Therapy facilities there are unique interaction points between volunteers and therapy horses. As such, this project considers to what extent volunteers are trained to understand common equine behaviour and communication cues. This thesis examines the Nebraska National Guard from 1919-1945 and demonstrates how interactions between the troops and their communities were effectively leveraged by Guardsmen to increase the morale of their soldiers in peacetime as well as wartime. The thesis consists of an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction contextualizes the Nebraska National Guard in U.S. military policy and the reasons for its reorganization after World War I.
