April 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq. The 2003 Iraq War was a major turning point in changing the ways that Iraqis related to their own government and to their fellow citizens. Paying attention to Iraqis' stories about their lives under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship and during the tumultuous two decades that followed his fall sheds light on the forces that can unify or divide a society during periods of crisis and upheaval.

Financed by Title III funds, I attended the Society for Military History (SMH) Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. The conference took place from March 23-25 2023. The Society for Military History was established in 1933 and is the preeminent professional organization for military historians in the United States. The SMH is devoted to stimulating and advancing the study of military history and counts more than 2,700 members from academia and the armed forces.

United States military veterans face many challenges while transitioning from the military to civilian life that require a new civilian perspective to navigate the differences between these experiences. Previous research is focused on psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological issues veterans face (Ainspan et al., 2018; Coulthard & Lee, 2022; Romaniuk et al., 2020). The military and the Veterans Administration (VA) have primarily focused on veterans achieving employment and education after leaving the military. Disruptive selection arises when extreme phenotypes have a fitness advantage compared to more-intermediate phenotypes. Theory and evidence suggest that intraspecific resource competition is a key driver of disruptive selection. However, while competition can be indirect (exploitative) or direct (interference), the role of interference competition in disruptive selection has not been tested, and most models of disruptive selection assume exploitative competition. We experimentally investigated whether the type of competition affects the outcome of competitive interactions using a system where disruptive selection is common: Mexican spadefoot toads (Spea multiplicata). Spea tadpoles develop into alternative resource-use phenotypes: carnivores, which consume fairy shrimp and …

Although the prohibition of the use of force is a cornerstone of international law, our understanding of what constitutes a “use of force” under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter nonetheless continues to evolve. While the term was traditionally understood to mean armed force, emerging interpretations are expanding our understanding of the prohibition’s breadth. The Charter’s text, travaux préparatoires, and subsequent interpretations and practice by States, reinforced by the persuasive reasoning of the International Court of Justice, all confirm that the notion of force extends to indirect force, which includes military support provided to parties to a conflict. Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and describe how exemplary senior Navy female leaders used five principles associated with grit (courage, conscientiousness, long-term goals, resilience, and excellence versus perfection) to accomplish extraordinary results in their organizations.

Methodology: This qualitative study used a phenomenological method to describe how eight senior Navy female leaders use five characteristics of grit to accomplish extraordinary results in their organizations. Respondents were purposively chosen. The researcher collected data through interviews, transcripts, and artifacts that were triangulated and coded for themes using NVivo software.

This Note is the product of the Tenth Circuit Database Project, and it analyzes one year of Tenth Circuit data from April 2021 through March 2022. The Project uses two databases, including one that was specifically designed for Denver Law Review and the Tenth Circuit Database Project. The information is displayed using an unconventional approach. It is crafted as a yearbook that compares the Tenth Circuit to a high school. The United States President has nearly unlimited sanctioning power. This paper agrees with presidential authority over sanctions, which has been firmly established by the Trading With the Enemy Act of 1917, International Emergency Economic Powers Act in 1977, United States v. Curtiss-Wright Export Corp., and INS v. Chadha. However, this paper does not agree with unchecked sanctioning power. By simply declaring a national emergency, the President can legally justify most economic sanctions on foreign countries. Over the last few decades, the United States has entered a new state of “sanctioning madness” and is known for its particularly destructive unilateral sanctions. …

This dissertation is the first in English to consider how artists primarily from Russia’s Partnership for Traveling Art Exhibitions, known as the Wanderers, wandered. It breaks with decades of scholarship portraying these painters as pleinarist populists who went to the people, or bourgeois professionals who stayed home. Although the Wanderers rarely accompanied their group’s eponymous Traveling Exhibition as it toured by rail, the artists remained exceptionally mobile over their careers in both the literal and extended notions of this word.
