The purpose of this dissertation was to identify practices that ensure decisions about soft infrastructure investments in downtown districts of small-medium sized cities in America have their desired impact on the economy and the community. Many American cities and towns recognize the need to successfully revitalize downtown centers. While there is evidence that soft infrastructure like landscaping, pedestrian walkways, benches, and lighting can impact businesses in downtown districts, investments in soft infrastructure in downtown districts do not always have the desired economic impact. However, the Iranian revolution in 1979 led to the ban of music by the new regime, limiting the output and audience for Iranian music. Most Americans do not realize that, notwithstanding the First Amendment's free speech guarantee, for most of our nation's history, judges sent men and women to prison for expressing ideas considered too "dangerous." It was not until the late 1960s that the Supreme Court rejected the clear and present danger doctrine, insisting that statutes banning speech must draw a distinction between advocacy of ideas and advocacy of imminent lawless action. The Court held that under that constitutional norm, the government could not send a Klansman to prison for expressing racist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise dangerous or offensive ideas. Bryant Papers consist of papers and memorabilia belonging to Robert “Bob” Edmiston Bryant (1903-1977) who was a Rock Hill theatre-owner, photographer, and a world record holding airplane pilot. The collection includes mostly photographs, negatives, slides, scrapbooks, pilot logs, and newspaper articles related to his flying career and to the Pix Theatre, but also includes correspondence, books, memorabilia (including a key to the City of Camden from Mayor James L. Anderson), awards, and certificates related to his life. There are materials related to the Apollo 16 mission including a scrapbook, photographs, and memorabilia. This article explores the meaning and context of crowdsourcing at the municipal scale. In order to legitimately govern, local governments seek feedback and engagement from actors and bodies beyond the state. At the same time, crowdsourcing efforts are increasingly being adopted by entities – public and private – to digitally transform local services and processes. But how do we know what the “the right to the city” (RTTC) means when it comes to meaningful and participatory decision-making? The thesis uses art practice as a research method to propose novel characterisations of animal life. These characterisations aim to challenge an organicist image of non-human animals. The thesis considers animal bodies and behaviours as subject to aesthetic judgments that are underpinned by deeper ontological and epistemological commitments as to relations between nature and society, in which to be categorised as the former entails a series of privations in relation to the latter – the absence of freedom, subjectivity and creativity. This paper focuses on inclusive higher education in the United Kingdom. It details international literature, research studies and national reports, including findings from the authors’ study, ‘Working with disabled students to address unequal outcomes in UK HE during the pandemic’ where we critically explored inclusive practice in Higher Education (HE) and disabled students’ learning experiences. Our national study was carried out as a collaboration between the University of Plymouth, University of Wolverhampton, and Disabled Students UK (DSUK). Anastomotic leak in colorectal surgery is a significant complication which is feared by surgeons and has considerable consequences for patients. It affects up to 17% of rectal resections and although there is significant knowledge regarding its detection and treatment, there are still no reliable methods for its prevention. We proposed the routine use of intra-operative endoscopy as a method of reducing the risk of anastomotic leak. This thesis explores current knowledge regarding anastomotic leaks, including the causes, prevention and management. We also present the findings from a feasibility trial into intra-operative endoscopy as a method for reducing anastomotic leak rate. …

This practice-as-research project uses performance writing to understand, illustrate and work through aspects of millennial experience, with a specific interest in precarious housing and labour. For us, experiencing precarity means that fundamental aspects of what is required to experience what Lauren Berlant calls ‘a good life’ (including secure working contracts, renters’ rights, access to leisure time) are not being met. This leads to a feeling of ‘living on the edge’ (Ahmed, 2017: 238), which in turn prevents us from being able to imagine alternatives. This essay addresses the relationship of digital games to absurdism through a comparison of the 2011 video game Dark Souls with Samuel Beckett’s absurdist play Waiting for Godot. Staked in this comparison is the rhetoric not only of Dark Souls but of the contemporary digital game as a medium; establishing an analogy that speaks to the broader genealogy of modern media, my argument implicates the underemphasized yet critically meaningful kinship of computer games and poetic theater. The surge in work-from-home arrangements brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic threatens serious disruptions to state tax systems. Billions of dollars are at stake at this pivotal moment as states grapple with where to assign income earned through these remote work arrangements for tax purposes: the worker’s home or the employer’s location? States intent on modernizing their income tax laws by assigning such income to the employer’s location have faced persistent challenges on both constitutional and policy grounds.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a significant shift in the film industry’s talent compensation models, driven by the rise of streaming platforms and the decline of traditional theatrical releases. This transformation has moved compensation structures from backend profit-sharing to upfront payments, raising legal and contractual challenges. The Johansson v. Disney case exemplifies these disputes, highlighting the need for clearer definitions of success and compensation in the streaming era. The industry is likely to adopt hybrid models, blending upfront fees with alternative compensation methods, as streaming continues to reshape how talent is paid.

Integrative learning is an important outcome for graduates of higher education. Therefore, it should be well-defined and assessed reliably. The American Association of Colleges & Universities has developed a rubric to define and assess integrative learning, but it has low reliability. This pilot study examines whether this rubric's reliability can be improved by training users on how to use the rubric in a group setting rather than individually. Twelve faculty were trained to score undergraduate ePortfolios using the Integrative and Applied Learning VALUE Rubric. Nate Smith is a highly acclaimed contemporary drummer, songwriter, and composer who displays virtuosic facility and pushes the boundaries of creativity within the contemporary funk and jazz- fusion drumming landscape. In performances with dynamic funk band The Fearless Flyers, Smith uses an uncommon, simplified drum set-up comprising just the kick, snare, and hi-hat (termed the ‘two-piece drum kit’), which introduces a range of challenges around maintaining creativity and the listener’s interest through just three distinct voices. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรในบทละครเรื่องพระอภัยมณี ของกรมศิลปากร มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการสวมบทบาทนางยักษ์ผีเสื้อสมุทรฉบับกรมศิลปากร โดยมีการศึกษาจากเอกสารวิชาการ การสัมภาษณ์ การทดลองแบบมีส่วนร่วมและไม่มีส่วนร่วม การรับชมการฝึกซ้อมและการรับชมการแสดง โดยมุ่งเน้นศึกษากลวิธีการสวมบทบาทเป็นนางผีเสื้อสมุทรในบทละครเรื่องพระอภัยมณีตอนเพลงปี่พิศวาสถึงเพลงปี่พิฆาต โดยศึกษารูปแบบและวิธีการปฏิบัติของ อาจารย์ธานิต ศาลากิจ ข้าราชการบำนาญ สำนักการสังคีต กรมศิลปากร ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลวิธีปัจจัยสำคัญสำหรับการสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรนั้นมี 3 ประเด็นด้วยกันคือ 1. คุณลักษณะของผู้แสดงที่จะต้องมี เสียง ระดับกลาง เสียงไม่ทุ้มหรือแหลมจนเกินไปพูดชัดถ้อยชัดคำ ฉะฉาน ปฏิภาณไหวพริบที่ดีในการแก้ไขสถานการณ์เนื่องจากบทละครระบุให้มีเจรจารับส่งมุกตลกและใช้เพื่อดำเนินเรื่อง ฝีมือการรำที่สวยงาม มีจริตของตัวนางผสมนางยักษ์ วงและเหลี่ยมมีขนาดย่อมกว่ายักษ์ชาย การกระทบจังหวะหนักแน่น มีการก้าวข้างลงเหลี่ยมหลบเข่า กดเกลียวข้าง การชี้นิ้วมือ และรูปร่างใหญ่แต่สันทัด ส่วนสูง 160-165 เซนติเมตร โดยประมาณ 2. ผู้แสดงจะต้องมีขั้นตอนการสวมบทบาท โดยให้ความสำคัญกับการตีความบทละครอย่างละเอียดทุกคำ ทุกบรรทัด วิเคราะห์เพื่อประกอบสร้างนางผีเสื้อสมุทรให้เกิดความสมจริงตามบทละคร ขั้นตอนการสมมติบทบาทของผู้แสดงเป็นนางผีเสื้อสมุทรที่ผู้แสดงสร้างขึ้น การมุ่งเน้นอารมณ์เป็นหลักในการแสดงเพื่อถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกออกมาให้ได้อย่างเต็มที่ และการฝึกฝนจนก่อให้เกิดความชำนาญ 3. การแสดง ผู้แสดงจะต้องทำความเข้าใจวิธีการถ่ายทอด ตัวละครนางผีเสื้อสมุทรที่ผู้แสดงได้ประกอบสร้างไว้ ในรูปแบบของนาฏกรรมที่ใช้แสดง โดยประกอบไปด้วย ท่ารำในการตีบทแบบมีคำร้อง ท่ารำกาแสดงขยายความรู้สึก (แบบไม่มีคำร้อง) เพลงหน้าพาทย์ การเจรจาตามบท การแสดงขยายความรู้สึก (เจรจาแทรกบท) สามารถแสดงอารมณ์ได้หลากหลาย ฉับไวในการสร้างอารมณ์และพลิกแพลงอารมณ์ แยกแยะระดับของอารมณ์ตามความสัมพันธ์ของแต่ละตัวละครได้และสถานการณ์ การใช้อุปกรณ์ และการใช้พื้นที่เวที ผู้แสดงจึงต้องมีความเข้าใจและหมั่นฝึกฝนกลวิธีดังกล่าวนี้จนเกิดความชำนาญ จึงจะสามารถสวมบทบาทนางผีเสื้อสมุทรออกมาได้อย่างแยบยล
