Land Acquistion For Flood Adaptation Under Changing Climate, Jiyang Zhang
Land Acquistion For Flood Adaptation Under Changing Climate, Jiyang Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Flood has caused tremendous life and economic losses over the past few decades and is expected to cause more in the future under the effects of climate change and socioeconomic development. With limited resources, cost-effective adaptation policies are urgently needed to minimize the economic and social impacts of future floods. The increasing flood losses and recent catastrophic flood events around the world expose two major issues of current flood adaptation schemes: 1) Flood risks are not well captured and predicted under climate change, leaving many communities unprepared for potential extreme flood events; 2) Current flood adaptation measures focus on the …
Enhancement Of The Performance Of Lignin-Derived Hard Carbons For Battery Applications By Chemical Pretreatment, Ruiqing Zhang
Enhancement Of The Performance Of Lignin-Derived Hard Carbons For Battery Applications By Chemical Pretreatment, Ruiqing Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Because of lignin's renewable and low-cost characteristics, lignin-derived hard carbons have been extensively studied as electrode materials for energy storage applications. However, the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) during the first cycle in electrode materials and the loss of lithium/sodium ions during long-term cycling has a fatal impact on the performance of batteries. Recent technology is needed to improve lignin-based electrode materials' initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE).
In this study, pre-lithiation/pre-sodiation through the spontaneous chemical reaction between the aryl etherification reagent was used to improve the low ICE of the lignin-based anode material. Our results show that the ICE of …

Introduction: The US Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) contains workplace measurements collected by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors. Its use for research is limited by the lack of record of a value for the limit of detection (LOD) associated with non-detected measurements, which should be used to set censoring point in statistical analysis. We aimed to remedy this by developing a predictive model of the volume of air sampled (V) for the non-detected results of airborne measurements, to then estimate the LOD using the instrument detection limit (IDL), as IDL/V.
Methods: We obtained the Chemical Exposure Health Data …

IntroductionHomelessness impacts negatively on health, wellbeing and life expectancy. People experiencing homelessness are likely to suffer physical and mental health problems, be heavy users of emergency services, and die 30 years earlier than the general population.1–3 Their severe and multiple disadvantages raise personal and institutional barriers to using health, social and housing services.4In late 2021, a grass-roots initiative in Plymouth began offering a Saturday morning drop-in service for rough sleepers and those in emergency accommodation. The service responded to the bleakness, loneliness and lack of support imposed by Monday-Friday service patterns. This effort was strengthened in February 2022 by a …

Post-Covid Syndrome And Adults With Intellectual Disability: Another Vulnerable Population Forgotten?, R Shankar, B Perera, A Roy, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
An area of interest presently is the lingering symptoms after COVID-19, i.e. post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). Specifics of diagnosis and management of PCS are emerging. However, vulnerable populations such as those with intellectual disabilities, who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, risk being ‘left behind’ from these considerations.

The use of aerial base stations, AI cloud, and satellite storage can help manage location, traffic, and specific application-based services for vehicular social networks. However, sharing of such data makes the vehicular network vulnerable to data and privacy leakage. In this regard, this article proposes an efficient and secure data sharing scheme using community segmentation and a blockchain-based framework for vehicular social networks. The proposed work considers similarity matrices that employ the dynamics of structural similarity, modularity matrix, and data compatibility. These similarity matrices are then passed through stacked autoencoders that are trained to extract encoded embedding. A density-based clustering …

The Effect Of Metacognition On Medical Laboratory Science Students' Perceived Feelings Of Self-Efficacy, Rebecca Simone Bakke
The Effect Of Metacognition On Medical Laboratory Science Students' Perceived Feelings Of Self-Efficacy, Rebecca Simone Bakke
Theses and Dissertations
Medical laboratories across the United States have been experiencing a workforce shortage for the past several decades. While the causes of this shortage are numerous, one of the contributing factors is high turnover and attrition rates due to low workplace satisfaction. Research has shown that higher levels of self-efficacy lead to increased job satisfaction and performance outcomes. Therefore, increasing the self-efficacy of medical laboratory science (MLS) students as they prepare to transition into the workforce may help address the labor shortage. To explore a potential exercise to increase self-efficacy among MLS students, a metacognitive learning strategy—reflective journaling—was implemented during the final …
