This case report describes a 17-year-old patient with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. The patient presented with non-bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. A colonoscopy revealed a cecal polypoid mass that required laparoscopic surgery. The residual appendix was dilated with myxoglobulosis and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm staged pT3Nx. The potential risk of pseudomyxoma peritonei is a serious complication of these tumors. Surveillance plans include computed tomography abdomen and pelvis, and tumor markers every 6 months for the next 2 years. This case highlights the importance of considering appendiceal malignancy in patients with abdominal …
Balance In The Basin, Casey Lee Mcclellan
Balance In The Basin, Casey Lee Mcclellan
BYU Law Review
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) changed the way land managers and users interact with public lands. However, its stringent requirements are not responsive to today’s environmental and economic realities. For the future of sustainable mineral extraction, there must be a better way. Adaptive management, a more flexible planning process, should be used on public lands to ensure greater leeway for operators, environmentalists, and local economies. By analyzing rural northeastern Utah’s Uinta Basin’s history and existing public land use plans, this Note applies adaptive management to the area to show how thinking outside the box can solve seemingly unsolvable problems.

Understanding The Biering-Sørensen Test: Contributors To Extensor Endurance In Young Adults With And Without A History Of Low Back Pain, Jonathan Shaw, Jesse V. Jacobs, Linda R. Van Dillen, George J. Beneck, Jo Armour Smith
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
The Biering-Sørensen test is commonly used to assess paraspinal muscle endurance. Research using a single repetition of the test has provided conflicting evidence for the contribution of impaired paraspinal muscle endurance to low back pain (LBP). This study investigated how Sørensen test duration, muscle activation, and muscle fatigability are affected by multiple repetitions of the test and determined predictors of Sørensen test duration in young adults with and without a history of LBP. Sixty-four young individuals performed three repetitions of the Sørensen test. Amplitude of activation and median frequency slope (fatigability) were calculated for the lumbar and thoracic paraspinals and …

Protected areas comprise of some of the most precious and sensitive habitats on the planet. However, many of these areas are also used as major tourism and leisure destinations. Managed well, these areas can safeguard biodiversity conservation with multiple positive benefits to local populations and economies. Yet, where not carefully planned and managed, there has long been recognition of the possibility of negative impacts on natural environments and social consequences for local communities. This chapter considers such impacts experienced in Dorset, UK, post the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reviews how effective some of the most commonly used tools …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
The new coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been destructive to human life and has resulted in a significant number of deaths globally. Detecting COVID-19 as early as possible is a critical way to prohibit the virus from quickly passing among people. RT-PCR is a method used for COVID-19 detection, but it is very expensive and isn’t an accurate method due to its sensitivity of 60–70%. For these reasons, deep learning and imaging techniques are combined by doctors, scientific experts, and professionals for accurate and rapid COVID-19 detection. In this work, we propose a stacked ensemble model based on Linear Regression …

The development of chatbots and other generative systems powered by AI, particularly the latest version of ChatGPT, rekindled many discussions on topics such as intelligence and creativity, even leading some to suggest that we may be undergoing a “fourth narcissistic wound”. Starting from Margaret Boden’s approach to creativity, we will argue that if computational systems have always excelled at combinatorial creativity, current AI systems stand out at exploratory creativity but are perceived as still falling flat regarding transformational creativity. This paper explores some of the reasons for this, including how, despite the immensity of the conceptual space that results from …

Guilty Machines: On Ab-Sens In The Age Of Ai, Dylan Lackey, Katherine Weinschenk
Critical Humanities
For Lacan, guilt arises in the sublimation of ab-sens (non-sense) into the symbolic comprehension of sen-absexe (sense without sex, sense in the deficiency of sexual relation), or in the maturation of language to sensibility through the effacement of sex. Though, as Slavoj Žižek himself points out in a recent article regarding ChatGPT, the split subject always misapprehends the true reason for guilt’s manifestation, such guilt at best provides a sort of evidence for the inclusion of the subject in the order of language, acting as a necessary, even enjoyable mark of the subject’s coherence (or, more importantly, the subject’s separation …

On Chatgpt And The Forces And Relations Of Production, Matthew Rellihan
Critical Humanities
ChatGPT and artificial intelligence more generally are transformative technologies capable of liberating humanity from the necessity of burdensome toil. Recent discussions have neglected this possibility because they suffer from the sorts of cognitive distortions catalogued by Marx and the Marxist tradition. Technology fetishism, understood on the model of commodity fetishism, occurs when the use and development allowed by a certain mode of production appear as intrinsic features of the technology itself. Naturalistic mystification occurs when the socially contingent use and development of these technologies is made to appear natural and therefore inevitable. To those suffering from either distortion, it will …

Massive Upper Gi Bleeding From Duodenal Invasion Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Successfully Treated With Embolization And Hemospray®, Patrick Twohig, Erin Walsh, Amy Calderon
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Direct invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) into the duodenum is a unique and life-threatening complication of HCC that has been rarely reported. A 60-year-old male with known HCC and cirrhosis presented with melena. Computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 7cm hepatic mass abutting the duodenum. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy demonstrated a large, actively oozing mass in the duodenum treated with Hemospray® followed by transarterial embolization (TAE). Active upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal invasion of HCC can be successfully treated with Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat and TAE.
Enhancing Dissemination At Medical Conferences: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach For Learners, Raquel Lamarche, Jasmine R. Marcelin
Enhancing Dissemination At Medical Conferences: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach For Learners, Raquel Lamarche, Jasmine R. Marcelin
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Empowering novice authors, particularly trainees and learners, this perspective piece integrates a cross-disciplinary approach to bolster scholarly dissemination at medical conferences. Through a tripartite methodology — Innovate, Implement, and Influence — the article first delves into innovation, offering four essential heuristics sourced from diverse fields, guiding the germination of ideas. Next, it demystifies the transformation of these ideas into research abstracts through a structured blueprint. The finale encompasses strategies to create compelling presentations that resonate with audiences. Woven throughout is an emphasis on craftsman-like precision in idea execution, fostering relationships, and engaging genuinely with content while maintaining audience-centricity. This blueprint …
