Correctly initializing the fire within coupled fire-atmosphere models is critical for producing accurate forecasts of meteorology near the fire, as well as the fire growth, and plume evolution. Improperly initializing the fire in a coupled fire-atmosphere model can introduce forecast errors that can impact wind circulations surrounding the fire and updrafts along the fire front. A well-constructed fire initialization process must be integrated within coupled fire-atmosphere models to ensure that the atmospheric component of the model does not become numerically unstable due to excessive heat fluxes released during the ignition, and that realistic fire-induced atmospheric circulations are established at the …

The Internet has become an increasingly attractive location for collecting data about cyber threats, driven by the abundance of quality data available and accessible online. As such, researchers and practitioners have turned to automated data collection technologies (ADCT), including ‘web crawlers’ and ‘web scrapers’, to study these threats. The rapid proliferation of ADCT has meant directions for their ethical and legal operation have been slow to adapt, with no clear guidelines regulating their use for research. This article identifies the relevant ethical and legal frameworks guiding the deployment of ADCT in Australia for cybersecurity research. This is accomplished through a …

Reaction of nickel and zinc triflates with the tridentate leucoverdazyl 1-isopropyl-3,5-di (2′-pyridyl)-6-oxo-2H-tetrazine (dipyvdH) and triethylamine resulted in the neutral coordination compounds M(dipyvd)2 (M = Ni,Zn). In acetonitrile, both compounds undergo two one electron oxidation processes, Zn (dipyvd)2 at −0.28 V and −0.12 V and Ni(dipyvd)2 at −0.32 V and −0.15 V vs ferrocene/ferricenium. Oxidations are ligand based resulting in an intermediate mixed valence species and a cationic bis(verdazyl) compound respectively. Oxidation of the ligand changes a localized, antiaromatic, non-planar 8π electron anion to a planar, delocalized 7π electron radical. The change in ligand structure results in an increase in the …

Some expressive writing (EW) interventions targeting posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) may reduce both PTSS and comorbid depression symptoms. The temporal associations between PTSS and depression symptom levels in response to EW interventions are unknown. This study examined the directionality of PTSS and depression symptom levels from baseline to 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month follow-ups of two online EW interventions in a Hispanic sample with diverse trauma experiences. Participants (n = 70) completed either emotion-focused or fact-focused writing for 3 consecutive days online. A manifest autoregressive model with cross-lagged effects and treatment condition was analyzed. All but one first-order autoregressive path …

Trafficking and exploitation for sex or labor affects millions of persons worldwide. To improve healthcare for these patients, in late 2018 new ICD-10 medical diagnosis codes were implemented in the US. These 13 codes include diagnosis of adult and child sexual exploitation, adult and child labor exploitation, and history of exploitation. Here we report on a database search of a large US health insurer that contained approximately 47.1 million patients and 0.9 million provider organizations, not limited to large medical systems. We reported on any diagnosis with the new codes between 2018-09-01 and 2022-09-01. The dataset was found to contain …

With the steady increase of air traffic column, an auxiliary decision tool is required to compensate the operation redundancy deficiency of more sectors of air traffic control. To solve the problem of nonconflict high-density departure and arrival traffic flow, this method is expected to rapidly establish and maintain safe separation with more flexible changing strategies for aircraft heading and speed. This paper proposes an improved reinforcement learning framework to achieve conflict detection and resolution. The proposed framework includes the first development of an air traffic flow model based on a multiagent Markov decision process. The goal reward function was then …

SIRT1 is an NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase that has been shown to play a significant role in many biological pathways, such as insulin secretion, tumor formation, lipid metabolism, and neurodegeneration. There is great interest in understanding the regulation of SIRT1 to better understand SIRT1-related diseases and to better design therapeutic approaches that target SIRT1. There are many known protein and small molecule activators and inhibitors of SIRT1. One well-studied SIRT1 regulator, resveratrol, has historically been regarded as a SIRT1 activator, however, recent studies have shown that it can also act as an inhibitor depending on the identity of the peptide substrate. …

Controlling Neocortical Epileptic Seizures Using Forced Temporal Spike-Time Stimulation: An In Silico Computational Study, Joseph Schmalz, Rachel V. Quinarez, Mayuresh V. Kothare, Gautam Kumar
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Epileptic seizure is typically characterized by highly synchronized episodes of neural activity. Existing stimulation therapies focus purely on suppressing the pathologically synchronized neuronal firing patterns during the ictal (seizure) period. While these strategies are effective in suppressing seizures when they occur, they fail to prevent the re-emergence of seizures once the stimulation is turned off. Previously, we developed a novel neurostimulation motif, which we refer to as “Forced Temporal Spike-Time Stimulation” (FTSTS) that has shown remarkable promise in long-lasting desynchronization of excessively synchronized neuronal firing patterns by harnessing synaptic plasticity. In this paper, we build upon this prior work by …

This paper aims to forecast solar power in very short horizons to assist in real-time distribution system operations. Popular machine learning methods for time series forecasting are studied, including recurrent neural networks with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Although LSTM networks perform well in different applications by accounting for long-term dependencies, they do not consider the frequency domain patterns, especially the low frequencies in the solar power data compared to the sampling frequency. The State Frequency Memory (SFM) model in this paper extends LSTM and adds multi-frequency components into memory states to reveal a variety of frequency patterns from the data …

Distributed Cooperative Kalman Filter Constrained By Advection–Diffusion Equation For Mobile Sensor Networks, Ziqiao Zhang, Scott T. Mayberry, Wencen Wu, Fumin Zhang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this paper, a distributed cooperative filtering strategy for state estimation has been developed for mobile sensor networks in a spatial–temporal varying field modeled by the advection–diffusion equation. Sensors are organized into distributed cells that resemble a mesh grid covering a spatial area, and estimation of the field value and gradient information at each cell center is obtained by running a constrained cooperative Kalman filter while incorporating the sensor measurements and information from neighboring cells. Within each cell, the finite volume method is applied to discretize and approximate the advection–diffusion equation. These approximations build the weakly coupled relationships between neighboring …

Grossman conjectured that R(G, G) = 2 · |V (G)| − 1, for all simple connected unicyclic graphs G of odd girth and |V (G)| ≥ 4. In this note, we prove his conjecture for various classes of G containing a triangle. In addition, new diagonal graph Ramsey numbers are calculated for some classes of simple connected unicyclic graphs of even girth.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the mental wellbeing of the entire globe. However, Latin American countries’ systemic and environmental challenges hindered the ability of many nations in the region to serve the mental health needs of its habitants. Compared to other mental health symptoms, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms (PTSS) were particularly higher among this geographical region. Nonetheless, there is scarcity of research identifying the unique symptom profile of PTSS. Given that the typology of PTSS is multidimensional and appears to be contingent on the type of stressor, this study (as part of larger international study) aimed to identify differences in PTSS …

The thought came to me over the Summer when I was visiting my hometown. There is a historical building called the Regional Treatment Center (RTC), and over the years, I have seen many attempts to repurpose it, but all have failed. We have visitors come from across the country and even other continents to see the RTC, and the city is losing out on potential profit for the community by not utilizing the RTC. Now, the city wants to tear the whole structure down (except the main tower), costing over 9 million dollars. Along with the great cost, loss of …

Inclusivity In Public Space: Architecture And The Disabled Body, Grace A. Dietz
Architecture Theses
People with disabilities are living in a world that simply was not built for them and it creates a lot of unnecessary struggle and bias because of that. Public spaces are especially discriminatory towards the disabled body, and yet the public world as it exists today is also more and more discriminatory towards every single one of our bodies because of reductive design strategies that place more emphasis on evolving technology such as cars over our bodily experience of design and space. The only way we can interact with the world is through our bodies. Our bodies move us through …

Retrofitting Architectural Environments In Response To An Evolving Workplace, Lexi Cheyenne Jordheim
Architecture Theses
The typology of this thesis is centered around Architectural Environments within commercial office buildings. The theoretical premise is based on the statement that people are less productive when their work environment is cold, artificially lit, and has limits to pattern and nature. This premise brings up the challenges that the workforce has and will continue to have since the Covid-19 pandemic. How can architects design environments (external, internal, intimate, etc) with the opportunity to positively impact the productivity and marketability of people, investors, and their work places. Can Architectural Environments have a direct positive impact on productivity? How can we …

Emotional well-being is important for everyone. It can be hard to encompass a healthy mentality when cancer is a prevalent factor in your life. People affected by cancer spend a lot of time in a hospital, a place that is usually harsh and cold. Hospitals are designed to help you heal physically, but it is becoming increasingly known that mental health is just as important as physical health. Hospitals should be designed with emotional wellbeing in mind. Researching the affects cancer has on people emotionally will provide insight on how to design a hospital that will promote emotional well-being and …

Despite improvements in cancer patient outcomes seen in the past decade, tumor resistance to therapy remains a major impediment to achieving durable clinical responses. Intratumoral heterogeneity related to genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolic differences between individual cancer cells has emerged as a driver of therapeutic resistance. This cell to cell heterogeneity can be assessed using single cell profiling technologies that enable the identification of tumor cell clones that exhibit similar defining features like specific mutations or patterns of DNA methylation. Single cell profiling of tumors before and after treatment can generate new insights into the cancer cell characteristics that …

Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer of malignant plasma cells that engraft in the bone marrow (BM). It is more than likely that the poorly investigated physical parameters of hypoxia and pH in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is critical for MM survival. Here, we explore the effects of a hypoxic environment on pH regulation and its role in MM survival.
Methods: We used in vitro models of MM, in which the culturing medium was modified to specific pH and pO2 levels and then measured the effects on cell survival that was correlated with changes in intracellular (pHi) and …

Deregulation of tumor cell metabolism is widely recognized as a "hallmark of cancer." Many of the selective pressures encountered by tumor cells, such as exposure to anticancer therapies, navigation of the metastatic cascade, and communication with the tumor microenvironment, can elicit further rewiring of tumor cell metabolism. Furthermore, phenotypic plasticity has been recently appreciated as an emerging "hallmark of cancer." Mitochondria are dynamic organelles and central hubs of metabolism whose roles in cancers have been a major focus of numerous studies. Importantly, therapeutic approaches targeting mitochondria are being developed. Interestingly, both plastic (i.e., reversible) and permanent (i.e., stable) metabolic adaptations …

Sustainable practices have been a topic of interest for decades within the design community. Architects and engineers alike are keen on the use of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar, but only recently have they shifted focus to building materials and methods as a potential solution for more environmentally conscious design. Our material selections and where they are sourced impacts our carbon footprint in ways we are just beginning to understand. One such material is the use of mass timber or cross laminated timber (CLT). Introduced in Europe, mass timber construction has slowly grown in popularity internationally. After …
