David Henry Hwang’S Yellow Face: Fictional Autoethnography And Parody On Racial Stereotypes, Quan Manh Ha, Jacob Christiansen Dec 2023

David Henry Hwang’S Yellow Face: Fictional Autoethnography And Parody On Racial Stereotypes, Quan Manh Ha, Jacob Christiansen

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Hwang’s play Yellow Face (2007), a dramaturgically inventive work, combines multiple narrative forms into a plot that blurs the distinction among social science, social commentary, and fiction. The play is simultaneously self-mocking and self-examining in its representation of the Asian American experience in theatre. It both examines Hwang’s own racial identity and boldly redefines conventional theatrical forms as the playwright places himself at the center of a highly embarrassing, fictional racial controversy in order to scrutinize the performativity of an Asian American identity. This article argues that Yellow Face is fictitious autoethnodrama as it acerbically parodies racialization.

The selection of animals to be marketed is largely completed by their visual assessment, solely relying on the skill level of the animal caretaker. Real-time monitoring of the weight of farm animals would provide important information for not only marketing, but also for the assessment of health and well-being issues. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a method based on 3D Convolutional Neural Network to predict weight from point clouds. Intel Real Sense D435 stereo depth camera placed at 2.7 m height was used to capture the 3D videos of a single finishing pig freely walking …

Technology Justice: Taxation Of Our Collective And Cumulative Cognitive Inheritance, Hilary G. Escajeda Dec 2023

Technology Justice: Taxation Of Our Collective And Cumulative Cognitive Inheritance, Hilary G. Escajeda

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As artificial intelligence and robotic technologies accelerate economic transformation, outdated property and tax laws will increasingly fail American workers with ordinary skills that perform routine job functions. Because technology may render millions of workers redundant, U.S. policymakers must make significant social, economic, and legal structural changes to (1) improve the lives of average workers, (2) support the economy, and (3) maintain political stability.

Inspired by Thomas Paine’s Agrarian Justice, this twenty-first century Article argues that “Technology Justice” requires that humans benefit from the cognitive endowment created by our ancestors’ minds. Specifically, it asserts that our collective and cumulative cognitive …

Computing An Image Of Objects Hiding Behind A Black Hole, Shannon Harding Dec 2023

Computing An Image Of Objects Hiding Behind A Black Hole, Shannon Harding

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Gravitational lensing is the bending of light rays around a black hole. The goal of this project was to produce a computer code that would model light rays coming from a grid of objects set behind a rotating black hole. Using these light rays, we produced an image illustrating how this background of objects would appear to an observer on Earth. This was done by creating a MATLAB code to model the paths of multiple light rays at a time. This code was then used to help check and correct a C++ code that produced an image. Over the semester, …

The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser Dec 2023

The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Nearly thirty years have passed since Prof. Ellen Aprill warned policymakers not to rely on tax incentives to fight urban poverty. At the time, federal and state governments were just beginning to embrace so-called place-based tax incentives, which are used to promote investment in low-income areas. Aprill was skeptical and expressed doubts about their capacity to change business behavior or to benefit low-income residents. Nevertheless, federal and state lawmakers charged forward, introducing new place-based tax incentive programs in the decades that followed. Today, tax incentives are a central part of most place-based policy initiatives. Yet, there is still a lot …

“This Person Is Safe”: An Exemplar Of Conducting Individual Interviews In Qualitative Research With Black Women, Quenette Walton, Olulbunmi Oyewuwo, Other Co-Authors

Social Work Faculty Publications

Significant conceptual and empirical evidence has been found through qualitative research about the benefits, limitations, and uses of individual interviews. However, there is scant research illustrating how researchers use specific techniques that center participants’ intersecting identities to build rapport, trust, and authentic connections during individual interviews, and especially during interviews with Black women. We illustrate how we used eight empirically grounded techniques in our qualitative individual interviews with Black women. Through our analysis of the interviews, the concept of safety emerged. “This person is safe” reflects the combined stories the women reported regarding their experiences engaging in individual interviews. In …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Tuberculosis remains an international health threat partly because of limited protection from pulmonary tuberculosis provided by standard intradermal vaccination with Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG); this may reflect the inability of intradermal vaccination to optimally induce pulmonary immunity. In contrast, respiratory Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection usually results in the immune-mediated bacillary containment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Here we present RNA-Seq-based assessments of systemic and pulmonary immune cells from LTBI participants and recipients of intradermal and oral BCG. LTBI individuals uniquely display ongoing immune activation and robust CD4 T cell recall responses in blood and lung. Intradermal BCG is associated …

Theses

This study analyzes electrical grid resilience, the evaluation methods, and resilience metrics, as well as the impact of a nuclear power plant as a base-load supplier on the resilience of an electrical grid during extreme events such as high-speed winds or hurricanes. The case study was implemented on a 10-generator 39-bus system (New England) using PowerWorld, and the data extraction and plotting were performed using MATLAB. The wind speeds, fragility curves, and time-to-restore function were randomly created based on previous models, and their values were extracted from MATLAB calculation using randomly generated but uniformly distributed wind speeds. The resilience metrics …

Estimating And Detecting Slow-Wave Events In Eeg Signals, Zhenghao Xiong Dec 2023

Estimating And Detecting Slow-Wave Events In Eeg Signals, Zhenghao Xiong

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Slow wave activity (SWA) is an electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern commonly occurring during anesthesia and deep sleep, and is hence a candidate biomarker to quantify such states and understand their connection to various phenotypes. SWA consists of individual slow waves (ISW), high-amplitude deflections lasting for approximately 0.5 to 1 second, and occurring quasi-periodically. This latter fact poses a challenge for conventional power spectral density EEG analysis methods that perform best when there is persistency of oscillatory activity. In this work, we pursue a time-domain detection framework for identifying and quantifying ISWs as a metric for SWA. Our method works, in essence, …

Size-Dependent Behavior And Challenges In Ag/Al2o3/Au Memristors: An Investigation Into Miniaturization Effect, Catherine Huang

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

This study investigates the performance of Ag/Al2O3/Au memristors, focusing on devices with dimensions ranging from 400nm to 1um. It was observed that smaller devices (400nm and 600nm) consistently display Ohmic behavior, lacking a high-resistance state. This is attributed to increased current density and potential structural imperfections during fabrication. In contrast, larger devices (800nm and 1um) exhibit volatile threshold switching (VTS) and a notable delay in transitioning from high to low resistance states. The study suggests that this delay is due to the instability of conductive filaments in smaller volumes. Additionally, these larger memristors show short retention …

Importance Of Sanitation For Stored-Product Pest Management, Georgina Bingham, David W. Hagstrum Dec 2023

Importance Of Sanitation For Stored-Product Pest Management, Georgina Bingham, David W. Hagstrum

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Sanitation is essential for the cost-effective pest management of stored-product insects. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938 led to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tightening regulatory standards, and many local surveys, courses and conferences were organized to prepare the industry for these new regulations. Sanitation removes insects and residual food, which may also provide shelter for insects, with heat treatments and insecticide applications. The number of insects removed by cleaning may be reduced as the number of available hiding places increases. Decreased sanitation negatively affects the efficacy of most other pest management practices, with means of 1.3- …

The hedonic value of salt fundamentally changes depending on the internal state. High concentrations of salt induce innate aversion under sated states, whereas such aversive stimuli transform into appetitive ones under sodium depletion. Neural mechanisms underlying this state-dependent salt valence switch are poorly understood. Using transcriptomics state-to-cell-type mapping and neural manipulations, we show that positive and negative valences of salt are controlled by anatomically distinct neural circuits in the mammalian brain. The hindbrain interoceptive circuit regulates sodium-specific appetitive drive , whereas behavioral tolerance of aversive salts is encoded by a dedicated class of neurons in the forebrain lamina terminalis (LT) …

The strength of construction material is a crucial consideration in the process of structural design and construction. Conventional materials such as concrete or steel have been widely utilized due to their predictable material performance. However, a significant obstacle to the widespread use of bamboo in structural elements lies in the challenge of its standardization. Many previous research studies have explored bamboo’s load bearing capacity, but the information remains limited due to variations in species, size, age, physical properties, moisture content, and other factors, making it difficult to predict their load-bearing capacity. This study aims to propose Artificial Neural Network (ANN) …

Study On The Combined Effect Of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Bottom Ash Andwaste Shingle In Hot Mix Asphalt, Kyungwon Park, Behnam Golestani, Boo Hyun Nam, Juan Hou, Jongwan Eun

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

This study investigated the positive effect of the combined use of recycled asphalt shingles (RASs) and municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash (B.A.) in asphalt concrete, which contributes to enhanced sustainability in pavement engineering. In addition, unlike traditional approaches that employ individual recycling material in hot mix asphalt (HMA), the combined use of the two waste materials maximizes the mechanical performance of the asphalt mixture. The addition of RAS (with 30–40% aged binder) as an additive generally enhances the strength/stiffness of the asphalt mixture. The high porosity/absorption of MSWI BA results in an additional amount of liquid asphalt binder …

Lapatinib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor used as a first-line treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer, has been reported to be associated with hepatotoxicity; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we report that lapatinib causes cytotoxicity in multiple types of hepatic cells, including primary human hepatocytes, HepaRG cells, and HepG2 cells. A 24-h treatment with lapatinib induced cell cycle disturbances, apoptosis, and DNA damage, and decreased the protein levels of topoisomerase in HepG2 cells. We investigated the role of cytochrome P450 (CYP)-mediated metabolism in lapatinib-induced cytotoxicity using our previously established HepG2 cell lines, which express each of 14 …

Long oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) are segments of DNAs having over one hundred nucleotides (nt). They are typically assembled using enzymatic methods such as PCR and ligation from shorter 20 to 60 nt ODNs produced by automated de novo chemical synthesis. While these methods have made many projects in areas such as synthetic biology and protein engineering possible, they have various drawbacks. For example, they cannot produce genes and genomes with long repeats and have difficulty to produce sequences containing stable secondary structures. Here, we report a direct de novo chemical synthesis of 400 nt ODNs, and their isolation from the complex …
