Evolution Of Floating Offshore Wind Platforms: A Review Of At-Sea Devices, Emma C. Edwards, Anna Holcombe, Scott Brown, Edward Ransley, Martyn Hann, Deborah Greaves Jan 2023

Evolution Of Floating Offshore Wind Platforms: A Review Of At-Sea Devices, Emma C. Edwards, Anna Holcombe, Scott Brown, Edward Ransley, Martyn Hann, Deborah Greaves

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Using floating platforms to support offshore wind turbines will be necessary for many countries to reach their Net-Zero targets, since much of the wind resource is located at water depths at which fixed offshore wind turbines are uneconomic or technologically unfeasible. However, floating platforms for wind turbines are still at an early stage of development, and there are a wide range of platform designs. This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art of floating offshore wind turbine platform designs which currently have or have previously had a prototype, demonstration, or farm scale project at sea. The most common design goals for the …

The Effect Of Metacognition On Medical Laboratory Science Students' Perceived Feelings Of Self-Efficacy, Rebecca Simone Bakke Jan 2023

The Effect Of Metacognition On Medical Laboratory Science Students' Perceived Feelings Of Self-Efficacy, Rebecca Simone Bakke

Theses and Dissertations

Medical laboratories across the United States have been experiencing a workforce shortage for the past several decades. While the causes of this shortage are numerous, one of the contributing factors is high turnover and attrition rates due to low workplace satisfaction. Research has shown that higher levels of self-efficacy lead to increased job satisfaction and performance outcomes. Therefore, increasing the self-efficacy of medical laboratory science (MLS) students as they prepare to transition into the workforce may help address the labor shortage. To explore a potential exercise to increase self-efficacy among MLS students, a metacognitive learning strategy—reflective journaling—was implemented during the final …

Marine Environmental Effects On A Graphene Reinforced Epoxy Adhered Single Lap Joint Between Metals And Cfrp, Rudi Fry-Taylor, Maozhou Meng, Xinyu Wang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This study investigates the marine environmental effects on the bonding strength of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced adhesive for a metal/composite single lap joint. Samples were immersed for periods of 1, 2 and 3 weeks in a 50 °C, 3.5% NaCl solution, with the purpose of the heat being the creation of an environment in which simulated an increased ageing period in the joint structure. In a dry condition, the use of GNPs produced a slight increase in lap shear strength of 17% and 14% in the carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) composite laminate to aluminium and stainless-steel joints respectively. Post …

Chloride Penetration In Concrete With Trilinear Binding Isotherm, D Li, P Li, L-Y Li Jan 2023

Chloride Penetration In Concrete With Trilinear Binding Isotherm, D Li, P Li, L-Y Li

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Chloride binding in concrete is an important factor and it can significantly affect the penetration speed of chlorides in concrete and thus the service life of concrete structures. In this paper a new chloride binding isotherm is proposed to be included in the diffusion model of chlorides in concrete. Instead of the use of the traditional Freundlich or Langmuir isotherm, the present chloride binding model uses a trilinear function to describe the chloride binding in concrete. The trilinear binding isotherm not only reflects the nonlinear binding feature of chlorides in concrete when it is exposed to a chloride environment, but …

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. …

Optical Phase Transition Characteristics In Germanium-Antimony-Selenium-Tellurium And Graphene Oxide Thin Film For Application In Photonics Memory., Gan Soon Xin

Student Works (2020-2029)

This thesis aims to study the phase change characteristic of Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST) using 1550 nm pulsed laser as excitation source, and to explore its potential in multilevel nonvolatile photonic memory application. Firstly, the amorphous to crystalline state phase transition of GSST using 1550 nm pulsed laser as optical excitation source is investigated. The threshold laser pulse duration to achieve crystallization are 190 ns, 140 ns, 100 ns and 70 ns for laser intensities of 0.46 GW/cm2, 0.61 GW/cm2, 0.76 GW/cm2 and 0.85 GW/cm2, respectively. However, it is found that the phase change tolerance of GSST is very stringent (phase transition …

Corrosion Behavior And Mechanism Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Cocrw In An Acidic Nacl Solution, P. Qin, L. Y. Chen, Y. J. Liu, C. H. Zhao, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang Jan 2023

Corrosion Behavior And Mechanism Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Cocrw In An Acidic Nacl Solution, P. Qin, L. Y. Chen, Y. J. Liu, C. H. Zhao, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The corrosion behavior and mechanism of the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) produced CoCrW were investigated in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution with a pH of 2. The corrosion resistance of the alloy increases after 28 days of immersion because of the formed oxide film, which results in the increased corrosion potential and the decreased passivation current density on the potentiodynamic polarization test. The corrosion mechanism of the L-PBF-produced CoCrW could be explained by the melt pool formed from the laser melting process, that the melt pools were “shrinking” by the formation and dissolution of the oxide film.
