Evolution Of Primate Vocal Repertoires: Vocal Systems As Embodied Capital For Mediating Within-Group Conflict, Eric Schniter, Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre
Evolution Of Primate Vocal Repertoires: Vocal Systems As Embodied Capital For Mediating Within-Group Conflict, Eric Schniter, Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre
ESI Working Papers
Life history traits constrain investments in costly neural and somatic embodied capital, potentially shaping the evolution of primate vocal communication systems. This study integrates life history theory with the social complexity hypothesis to test a sequential pathway from longevity to social dynamics to vocal repertoire size, using updated vocal repertoire data for McComb & Semple’s (2005) set of 42 non-human primate species, alongside measures of group size and within-group conflict. We compiled data on vocal repertoire size, within-group conflict, group size, endocranial volume, and maximum longevity, analysing these via Phylogenetic Sequential Canonical Cascade Model and ancestral character reconstructions. …

A Case For The Negotiation Of Agency By Disenfranchised Subjects In Contemporary Nigerian Literature, Chinelo Eneh
A Case For The Negotiation Of Agency By Disenfranchised Subjects In Contemporary Nigerian Literature, Chinelo Eneh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis diverges from conventional narratives that predominantly focus on the challenges faced by women and children in Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of colonial rule. While existing scholarship tends to underscore the myriad difficulties and constraints experienced by these individuals, this study takes a departure from such well-trodden paths. Instead, it endeavors to bring to the forefront the endeavors undertaken by these subjects to assert a measure of agency and autonomy, specifically during two tumultuous periods in Nigeria's history. Through a focused examination of Chimamanda Adichie's "Half of A Yellow Sun" and Adaobi Nwaubani's "Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree," …

Blue Economic Potency Of Marine Invertebrates For Bio-Drug Discovery, Hassan A.H. Ibrahim, Hanan M. Abdelnaby, Samia S. Abouelkheir, Hamdy A. Abo-Taleb, Nermeen A. El Sersy
Blue Economy
In terms of focus, promising results obtained from extensive investigations showed that the biodiversity of marine invertebrates has been documented. This poses the marine ecosystem as a hopeful resource in the discovery of novel compounds, with an ideal starting point in scaffolding additional screening of marine natural products (MNPs), especially to face the rise in the burden of diseases and treatment failure. A wide range of antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, neuroprotective, analgesic, antimalarial and other agents of marine origin have been pursued in the control and management of diseases. In the current review, we will focus on figuring out …
In An Animal’S Shoes: Facing Animal Suffering As A Difficulty Of Reality, Konstantin Deininger
In An Animal’S Shoes: Facing Animal Suffering As A Difficulty Of Reality, Konstantin Deininger
Between the Species
This paper examines the challenges posed by confronting the topic of animal suffering in animal husbandry. The predominant positions within animal ethics mainly focus on the moral status of humans and animals, arguing that killing farm animals is morally wrong due to specifiable intrinsic properties that grant farm animals significant moral status. Such positions are derived from a detached perspective that advocates for rational consistency. This paper opposes this detached perspective. By drawing on Cora Diamond’s concept of a difficulty of reality, it contends that facing animal suffering, including changing one’s habits and attitudes towards this suffering, is instead best …

Case Report And Literature Review Of An Atypical Polymyalgia Rheumatica And Its Management, Saad Bilal Ahmed, Saara Ahmad, Hanmei Pan
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a systemic inflammatory disease of the elderly population that increases in incidence as age advances. It is characterised by the sudden or sub-acute onset of symptoms affecting the shoulder and pelvic girdles, often accompanied by constitutional symptoms. Due to the lack of consensual diagnostic criteria and specific laboratory or radiological investigations for PMR, its diagnosis can be very challenging, particularly because it can be mimicked or masked by other geriatric syndromes. PMR responds well to glucocorticoid treatment, but if left untreated, can lead to morbidity and poor quality of life. We present the case of an …

DNA polymerase (DNAP) can correct errors in DNA during replication by proofreading, a process critical for cell viability. However, the mechanism by which an erroneously incorporated base translocates from the polymerase to the exonuclease site and the corrected DNA terminus returns has remained elusive. Here, we present an ensemble of nine high-resolution structures representing human mitochondrial DNA polymerase Gamma, Polγ, captured during consecutive proofreading steps. The structures reveal key events, including mismatched base recognition, its dissociation from the polymerase site, forward translocation of DNAP, alterations in DNA trajectory, repositioning and refolding of elements for primer separation, DNAP backtracking, and displacement …

The left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a mechanical circulatory support device that supports the heart failure patient as a bridge to transplant (BTT) or as a destination therapy for those who have other medical comorbidities or complications that disqualify them from meeting transplant criteria. In patients with severe heart failure, LVAD use has extended survival and improved signs and symptoms of cardiac congestion and low cardiac output, such as dyspnea, fatigue, and exercise intolerance. However, these devices are associated with specific hematologic and thrombotic complications. In this manuscript, we review the common hematologic complications of LVADs.

Going Green To Sell, N'Dja D. N'Guessan
Student Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis project discusses green communication strategies that can be implemented across industries to improve sales while aligning with consumers’ environmental values. It incorporates practical ideas and techniques within the reach of for-profit organizations when creating, developing, and promoting green products. The environmental, social, and governance expectations have challenged organizations across industries for years. By producing and interpreting the results of a meta-analysis of green business strategies found in existing research, Going Green to Sell offers ideas to new and growing organizations on how to market their products, using functional communication strategies that have worked before, focusing on green …

Credit Risk Modeling Using Interpreted Xgboost, Marcin Hernes, Jędrzej Adaszyński, Piotr Tutak
European Management Studies
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to develop a credit risk assessment model usingb the XGBoost classifier supported by interpretation issues. Design/methodology/approach: The risk modeling is based on Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) in the research. It is a method used for regression and classification problems. It is based on a sequence of decision trees using a gradient-based optimization method of the loss function to minimize the errors of weak estimators. We use also methods for performing local and global interpretability: ceteris paribus charts, SHAP and feature importance approach. Findings: Based on the research results, it can be concluded that …
Byte A Carrot For Change: Uprooting Problems In Data Privacy Regulations, Sarah Terry
Byte A Carrot For Change: Uprooting Problems In Data Privacy Regulations, Sarah Terry
BYU Law Review
There is a growing gap between technology advancement and a lagging regulatory system. This is particularly problematic in consumer data privacy regulating. Companies hold collected consumer data and determine its use largely without accountability. As a result, ethical questions that carry society-shaping impact are answered in-house, under the influence of groupthink, and are withheld from anyone else weighing in.
This Note poses a solution that would address multiple data privacy regulation issues. Namely, an incentive approach would help even out the information-imbalanced system. Incentives are used as tools throughout intellectual property law to foster commercial progress, discourage trade secrets, and …

Twenty-First Century Split: Partisan, Racial, And Gender Differences In Circuit Judges Following Earlier Opinions, Stuart Minor Benjamin, Kevin M. Quinn, Byungkoo Kim
BYU Law Review
Judges shape the law with their votes and the reasoning in their opinions. An important element of the latter is which opinions they follow, and thus elevate, and which they cast doubt on, and thus diminish. Using a unique and comprehensive dataset containing the substantive Shepard’s treatments of all circuit court published and unpublished majority opinions issued between 1974 and 2017, we examine the relationship between judges’ substantive treatments of earlier appellate cases and their party, race, and gender. Are judges more likely to follow opinions written by colleagues of the same party, race, or gender? What we find is …

Chronic Alcoholic Pancreatitis With Necrotising Exacerbation And Pseudocyst Treated With Homoeopathy: A Case Report, Bipin Sohanraj Jain, Tanvir Abdul Hamid Sheikh
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Introduction: Chronic alcoholic pancreatitis with necrotising exacerbation and pseudocyst is a condition with a poor prognosis. The disease pathology, along with a history of trauma, and alcohol dependence, adds up to the severity making it more difficult to treat. The main surgical management is cyst drainage. Individualised homoeopathic medicine can resolve this without surgical intervention.
Case Summary: In a case with a combination of pathology, trauma and addiction, arriving at a homoeopathic similimum can be challenging. The present case study demonstrates the management of a patient in a semi-comatose state with abdominal rigidity and ultrasonographic evidence of pancreatic …
