The Philippine Agricultural Scientist
Problems facing farmers practicing conservation agriculture in the semi-arid zone of Tunisia include appropriate cover crop selection, management of allelopathic effects affecting subsequent crop performance, and influence of seasonal variation on allelopathy expression. Allelopathy expressed by faba bean (Vicia faba L.) toward durum wheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. durum (Desf.) Husn.] was studied using bioassays during three growing seasons. The role of phenols in the expression of such potential was also investigated. Analyses of plant samples at three phenological stages (flowering, fruiting, senescence) revealed that leaves were most inhibitory. Allelopathic potential differed among plant components and phenological stages, with …

Mapk Activation In Pancreatic Ductal Cells Expressing Wild-Type Cftr, Kaitlin Bryce
Summer Community of Scholars Posters (RCEU and HCR Combined Programs)
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a lung disease caused by a genetic mutation in the human gene cystic fibrosis transmembrane-conductance regulator (CFTR), and those affected by CF are often also affected by CF related diabetes. The goal of this project was to investigate mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activation in human pancreatic duct epithelial (H6C7) cells in response to epidermal growth factor (EGF) stimulation. H6C7 cells were grown in media supplemented with EGF and bovine pituitary extract. Cells were incubated with 25 ng/ml human EGF for the times 0, 5 and 20 minutes. Cell extracts were analyzed by western blotting using …
Cancer Risk In Human Spaceflight & Directions For Space Nursing: A Rapid Scoping Review, Brighton Krejci
Cancer Risk In Human Spaceflight & Directions For Space Nursing: A Rapid Scoping Review, Brighton Krejci
Summer Community of Scholars Posters (RCEU and HCR Combined Programs)
Background: As humans venture further into deep space, it is essential to possess an adequate understanding of the unique challenges and cancer risks associated with its exploration. Because of radiation exposure and other hazards, one of the risks facing space crews is carcinogenesis. Although utilizing engineering solutions such as radiation shielding to mitigate health risks like carcinogenesis is important, an over-reliance on these countermeasures would add excess mass and cost to the spacecraft. Therefore, we need to have a better understanding of cancer risks of being in a spacecraft to guide the study of health-based countermeasures that reduce the risk …

Breaking Down Bias: A Comparative Analysis Of General Public And Police Officer Attitudes Toward Mental Illness And Officer Decision-Making In Mental Health Crises, Therese L. Todd
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Police responses to persons with mental illness (PMIs) compared to those without appear to be more likely to result in negative outcomes, underscoring the importance of understanding these interactions and the factors that may influence them. Relatively little research has examined officer attitudes toward mental illness, and no study has examined implicit bias toward mental illness among police officers or how police culture may impact outcomes in mental health crises. The present study sought to: 1) measure explicit and implicit bias toward PMIs among the general public and police officers to understand how these constructs may vary among these populations; …
White Supremacist Print Culture And The Creation Of White Working-Class Ideology In 1860s New York City, Anna Meyer
White Supremacist Print Culture And The Creation Of White Working-Class Ideology In 1860s New York City, Anna Meyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
J. H. Van Evrie believed in the biological basis of white racial supremacy and Black inferiority beliefs which he spread in his publications throughout the 19th century. He generated support for Copperhead politicians, pro-slavery Northern Democrats, who would enact his racial policies, in his newspaper the Weekly Caucasian, published in New York City during the Civil War. He adapted the presentation of his racial theories to appeal to the economic concerns of among working-class white men and Irish immigrants by using allegories about the Civil War. The newspaper created a sense of white nationalism and racial solidarity with …
Electrochemical Resistive-Pulse Sensing In Biological Systems, Rui Jia
Electrochemical Resistive-Pulse Sensing In Biological Systems, Rui Jia
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Electrochemical resistive-pulse (ERP) sensing with conductive carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) is a powerful technique for detecting single nanoscopic entities, such as single liposomes and biological vesicles, enabling qualitative and quantitative analysis of the redox molecules contained in such entities. ERP experiments were first carried out in biological system by inserting a conductive carbon nanopipette into a macrophage cell to sample single vesicles and measuring reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) contained inside them.
Besides sensing intracellular vesicles in macrophage cells, we applied this technique to direct detect single extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from a specific cell, and analysis of reactive oxygen …
Wanting Under Surveillance: A Critical Analysis Of Young Women’S Sexual Desire, Jennifer Chmielewski
Wanting Under Surveillance: A Critical Analysis Of Young Women’S Sexual Desire, Jennifer Chmielewski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The negotiation of sexual desire is argued to be a vital part of the development of women’s sense of agency and well-being. Whereas desire is a concept that is widely used, measured, and diagnosed, women’s experiences of desire are poorly understood. Heeding the calls of feminist psychologists for conceptual analysis, and the need to examine desire within the multiple intimate and sociopolitical contexts in which sexuality develops, my dissertation is a critical feminist analysis of young women’s desire, centered on their subjective and embodied experiences. Moving beyond questions of what women desire or how much desire they have, I explore …
The Confounding Body: Female Corporeality, Androgyny, And Disgust In The Work Of Virginia Woolf And Zinaida Gippius, Yelizaveta Shapiro
The Confounding Body: Female Corporeality, Androgyny, And Disgust In The Work Of Virginia Woolf And Zinaida Gippius, Yelizaveta Shapiro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Confounding Body: Female Corporeality, Androgyny, and Disgust in the Work of Virginia Woolf and Zinaida Gippius examines how the discourses of degeneration, eugenics, and sexology shaped representations of women’s bodies in British and Russian modernist literature. Focusing on the writing of Zinaida Gippius (1869-1945) and Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), I challenge the longstanding argument that both authors attempted to escape the material body by resorting to androgynous tropes. I argue that the material female body takes center stage in both Gippius’s and Woolf’s work and functions as a powerfully paradoxical entity: one that generates disgust and enables oppression while housing …
Expanding The Role Of The Temporal Dimension In Ecological Niche Models: A Study On Mexican Montane Small Mammals, Gonzalo E. Pinilla Buitrago
Expanding The Role Of The Temporal Dimension In Ecological Niche Models: A Study On Mexican Montane Small Mammals, Gonzalo E. Pinilla Buitrago
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Ecological niche models (ENMs) are commonly used to estimate the potential geographic distributions of species and have various uses, such as predicting invasive species' potential distribution, assessing vulnerability to climate change, or estimating paleodistributions. However, ENM developments have primarily focused on solving spatially related issues, underemphasizing the temporal dimensionality of occurrence and environmental data collected over the last century. One limitation of ENMs is the common practice of using recent environmental averages that fail to capture the gradual environmental change over the time span of the occurrence records and can hide trends in environmental variables, a critical piece of information …
Determining The Influence Of Abiotic And Biotic Predictors On Ecological Niche Models, Erica Johnson
Determining The Influence Of Abiotic And Biotic Predictors On Ecological Niche Models, Erica Johnson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Biotic variables, including those reflecting interactions such as competition and parasitism, are generally assumed to have negligible effects on broadscale species distributions and are typically excluded from ecological niche models (ENMs). However, the role such interactions play in shaping species distributions is increasingly recognized, sparking the development of methods for their integration into ENMs.
Among the most common approaches are those that limit the ENM output of the focal species by the distribution of biotic interactors (post-processing) and those that incorporate biotic interactors as predictor variables. These endeavors hold widespread and critical usages, such as predicting the impacts of climate …
Changes In The Epigenetic Landscape Of Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells With Time, David K. Dansu
Changes In The Epigenetic Landscape Of Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells With Time, David K. Dansu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Most neonatal oligodendrocyte progenitors (nOPCs) give rise to myelinating oligodendrocytes during development, while a proportion are retained as proliferative undifferentiated cells in the adult brain (aOPCs). Previous studies have reported distinct properties for those two populations but the molecular mechanisms underlying these intrinsic differences are not well understood. Using RNA-sequencing and unbiased histone proteomics analysis, we identify transcripts and histone marks that are higher in aOPCs than nOPCs. The genome-wide ChIP-sequencing analysis of chromatin from aOPCs compared to nOPCs detects greater occupancy of the H4K8ac mark at loci corresponding to the higher transcript levels of oligodendrocyte-specific transcription factors and lipid …
Out-Of-Distribution Generalization Of Deep Learning To Illuminate Dark Protein Functional Space, Tian Cai
Out-Of-Distribution Generalization Of Deep Learning To Illuminate Dark Protein Functional Space, Tian Cai
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Dark protein illumination is a fundamental challenge in drug discovery where majority human proteins are understudied, i.e. with only known protein sequence but no known small molecule binder. It's a major road block to enable drug discovery paradigm shift from single-targeted which looks to identify a single target and design drug to regulate the single target to multi-targeted in a Systems Pharmacology perspective. Diseases such as Alzheimer's and Opioid-Use-Disorder plaguing millions of patients call for effective multi-targeted approach involving dark proteins. Using limited protein data to predict dark protein property requires deep learning systems with OOD generalization capacity. Out-of-Distribution (OOD) …
A Novel Therapeutic Strategy For Alzheimer’S Disease: Sex-Dependent Mechanisms Altered By The Hdac Inhibitor Rg2833 In A Transgenic Rat Model, Kelechi Ndukwe
A Novel Therapeutic Strategy For Alzheimer’S Disease: Sex-Dependent Mechanisms Altered By The Hdac Inhibitor Rg2833 In A Transgenic Rat Model, Kelechi Ndukwe
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. In the United States, AD affects about 6.2 million Americans and is projected to reach 13.8 million by 2050. Currently, there are no effective therapies for AD and therapies targeting epigenetic mechanisms have shown to be effective in improving cognitive performance in animal models of AD. However, until now no study has reported sex-dependent mechanisms leading to differential expression of genes that contribute to changes in AD pathology. From our in silico studies, we identified an FDA-approved drug, RG2833 (N-[6-(2-aminoanilino)-6-oxohexyl]-4-methylbenzamide) that penetrates the blood brain barrier and can potentially ameliorate …
The Role Of Nuclear Quantum Effects In Supercooled Water And Amorphous Ice, Ali H. Eltareb
The Role Of Nuclear Quantum Effects In Supercooled Water And Amorphous Ice, Ali H. Eltareb
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Water is one of the most important substances on Earth and plays a fundamental role in numerous scientific and engineering applications. Interestingly, water behaves much differently than other liquids. For example, water shows an anomalous density maximum at 277 K, the solid phase (ice) is less denser than the liquid, and its thermodynamic response functions, such as the specific heat CP and isothermal compressibility κT, also increase anomalously upon cooling. In the glassy state, water can exist in two different forms, low-density and high-density amorphous ice (LDA and HDA). While water has been scrutinized for many centuries, …
Construction And Performance Optimization Of Bioconjugated Nanosensors For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer And Pro-Inflammatory Diseases, Pooja Gaikwad
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In recent years, nanosensors have emerged as a tool with strong potential in medical diagnostics. Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) based optical nanosensors have notably garnered interest due to the unique characteristics of their near-infrared fluorescence emission, including tissue transparency, photostability, and various chiralities with discrete absorption and fluorescence emission bands. Additionally, the optoelectronic properties of SWCNT are sensitive to the surrounding environment, which makes them suitable for in vitro and in vivo biosensing. Single-stranded (ss) DNA-wrapped SWCNTs have been reported as optical nanosensors for cancers and metabolic diseases. Breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of death …
Tongues Out Of Place: Narratives Of Hereness And Images Of Be(Long)Ing, Christopher Hoffman
Tongues Out Of Place: Narratives Of Hereness And Images Of Be(Long)Ing, Christopher Hoffman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
What is the role of the psychologist during times of gentrification, climate change, and inequity? Using Hall & Massey’s (2010) term conjunctural crisis, or the overlapping of multiple disasters that bleed into each other, I argue that psychologists have a responsibility to combat social inequity and work towards tangible strategies in collaboration with communities to dismantle structures of oppression. In times of gentrification and climate change, I argue that psychologists must play a role in promoting public science, a praxis of research committed to applying social science with communities in order to work towards social justice and build a more …
Reflections On The Digital Memory Of Trans-Atlantic Slavery, Vinh T. Pham
Reflections On The Digital Memory Of Trans-Atlantic Slavery, Vinh T. Pham
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Within the scope of digital humanities scholarship, this thesis interrogates ‘memory’ as a conceptual frame for remembering Black life, both past and present, in the face of missing historical data and in the afterlife of trans-Atlantic slavery. Such a concept—increasingly taken up as method in the humanities, along with related allusions to the ephemeral, spectral, or haunted—is sought to refuse historiographical and techno-scientific claims to empirical certainty or transparency, and instead affirm its gaps and absences as themselves productive sites for self-reflexive speculation on the complexities of lived experience. Applied to the digital study of trans-Atlantic chattel slavery, memory comes …
Quantifying Temperature-, Pressure-, And Nuclear Quantum Effects On Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Water-Mediated Interactions, Justin T. Engstler
Quantifying Temperature-, Pressure-, And Nuclear Quantum Effects On Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Water-Mediated Interactions, Justin T. Engstler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Water-mediated interactions (WMIs) are responsible for diverse processes in aqueous solutions, including protein folding and nanoparticle aggregation. WMI may be affected by changes in temperature and pressure, and hence, they can alter chemical/physical processes that occur in aqueous environments. Traditionally, attention has been focused on hydrophobic interactions while, in comparison, the role of hydrophilic and hybrid (hydrophobic–hydrophilic) interactions have been mostly overlooked. Here, we study the role of T and P on the WMI between nanoscale (i) hydrophobic–hydrophobic, (ii) hydrophilic–hydrophilic, and (iii) hydrophilic–hydrophobic pairs of (hydroxylated/non-hydroxylated) graphene-based surfaces. We find that hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and hybrid interactions are all sensitive to …
Optimization And Application Of Graph Neural Networks, Shuo Zhang
Optimization And Application Of Graph Neural Networks, Shuo Zhang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are widely recognized for their potential in learning from graph-structured data and solving complex problems. However, optimal performance and applicability of GNNs have been an open-ended challenge. This dissertation presents a series of substantial advances addressing this problem. First, we investigate attention-based GNNs, revealing a critical shortcoming: their ignorance of cardinality information that impacts their discriminative power. To rectify this, we propose Cardinality Preserved Attention (CPA) models that can be applied to any attention-based GNNs, which exhibit a marked improvement in performance. Next, we introduce the Directional Node Pair (DNP) descriptor and the Robust Molecular Graph …
Synthesis Of Biologically Active Tropolones And Stereochemically Rich Compounds Via Cross-Coupling Reactions, Nana B. Agyemang
Synthesis Of Biologically Active Tropolones And Stereochemically Rich Compounds Via Cross-Coupling Reactions, Nana B. Agyemang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Over the past years the Murelli lab has established research based on the synthesis and biological evaluations of alpha-hydroxytropolones (alpha-HTs). These seven-membered aromatic rings have three contiguous oxygen atoms that chelates to metals, thus, biologically having the ability to bind dinuclear metalloenzymes and promoting inhibition. Synthetic routes to alpha-HT’s are scarce and therefore has been the main driving force in developing efficient and general synthetic methods to obtain variations in alpha-HTs, enabling SAR studies. The Murelli lab have therefore developed an oxidopyrylium cycloaddition/ring-opening strategy that is able to generate polysubstituted alpha-HTs starting from kojic acid, a cheap and readily available …
Theorizing Racial Democracy, Teófilo De Souza Carmo Reis
Theorizing Racial Democracy, Teófilo De Souza Carmo Reis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The critical philosophy of race has shown recent growth, but it tends to focus too much on the United States. This leaves many race-related concepts and phenomena from other parts of the world underexplored. I help to fill this gap by exploring the idea of "racial democracy" in Brazil, which is a form of racial ignorance that is prevalent in that country. Specifically, I am interested in the epistemic aspects of this mechanism of creating and propagating racial ignorance.
To achieve this goal, I begin by introducing Charles Mills' concept of white ignorance and other influential works in social epistemology. …
Establishing A Mouse Model Of Glioblastoma (Gbm) And Developing Strategies To Eliminate Cancer Cells., Juliet N.E. Baidoo-Kanneh
Establishing A Mouse Model Of Glioblastoma (Gbm) And Developing Strategies To Eliminate Cancer Cells., Juliet N.E. Baidoo-Kanneh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As the tenth leading cause of cancer death in the United States with a 6.8% five-year survival rate, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a very deadly disease with a poor prognosis. Therefore, a curative treatment is in high demand. Among the widely used anti-metabolites (Chemotherapeutic agents, CAs), each compound approved for human use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has side effects. Three main phenomena contribute to the side effects and the reappearance of cancer: (a) the cancer cells become resistant to chemo- and radiation therapy; (b) this chemo-resistance prompts the use of higher doses of the chemotherapeutic agents; and …
Towards Interpretable Machine Reading Comprehension With Mixed Effects Regression And Exploratory Prompt Analysis, Luca Del Signore
Towards Interpretable Machine Reading Comprehension With Mixed Effects Regression And Exploratory Prompt Analysis, Luca Del Signore
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We investigate the properties of natural language prompts that determine their difficulty in machine reading comprehension tasks. While much work has been done benchmarking language model performance at the task level, there is considerably less literature focused on how individual task items can contribute to interpretable evaluations of natural language understanding. Such work is essential to deepening our understanding of language models and ensuring their responsible use as a key tool in human machine communication. We perform an in depth mixed effects analysis on the behavior of three major generative language models, comparing their performance on a large reading comprehension …
Tunable Linear And Nonlinear Metasurfaces Based On Hybrid Gold-Graphene Plasmons, Matthew Feinstein
Tunable Linear And Nonlinear Metasurfaces Based On Hybrid Gold-Graphene Plasmons, Matthew Feinstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Optical Metasurfaces are planar structures that are patterned with subwavelength structures and are very thin compared to the wavelength of light. Despite their thinness, these structured materials can strongly interact with incident light to effect the functionalities of conventional optical components, such as rotation of the polarization state, beam steering, lensing, spectral filtering, and holography, to name a few. Metasurfaces can also facilitate nonlinear optical effects, such as the mixing of beams at different frequencies to generate a beam at a new frequency.
The ability to alter the behavior of a metasurface during operation is highly desired for applications such …
Development Of Chemical Probes For Two Pro-Metastatic Enzymes: Cysteine Cathepsins And Nek2 Kinase, Ashif I. Bhuiyan
Development Of Chemical Probes For Two Pro-Metastatic Enzymes: Cysteine Cathepsins And Nek2 Kinase, Ashif I. Bhuiyan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Proteases, specifically cysteine proteases, are crucial for the survival and growth of living organisms. They hydrolyze proteins and use different mechanisms to function. Cysteine proteases are classified into three types: papain, caspase, and picornaviridae. The papain class, with 11 cysteine cathepsins, regulates essential physiological functions, and abnormal expression is linked to various diseases. Our research aims to develop small molecules that inhibit cathepsins B and L to develop probes for functional proteomics.
The centrosome is critical for proper cell division and is regulated by multiple kinases, including Nek2. Nek2 is highly concentrated at the centrosome in vertebrates and plays a …
Demarcating Psychopathologies: Nosology, Validity, And The Taxonomic Problem In Psychiatric Medicine, Julia Zentz Kolak
Demarcating Psychopathologies: Nosology, Validity, And The Taxonomic Problem In Psychiatric Medicine, Julia Zentz Kolak
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I argue that the discussion surrounding the role of values in the conceptualization of mental disorders is reproduced in critical debates surrounding the issue of reliability and validity in a psychiatric nosology. In so doing, I oppose the conventional separation of the demarcation problem and the crisis of validity in psychiatric classification, arguing instead that they are inextricably linked. After drawing out the intersection between these literatures in the conceptual history of the DSM and its much-maligned transition to an etiologically neutral taxonomy of mental disorders, I consider Carl Hempel’s proposed conciliation between descriptive and theoretical systematization …

Here, we present a perspective on how scholars may approach writing in conjunction with AI and offer approaches to evaluating whether or not such AI-writing violates copyright or falls within the safe harbor of fair use. We present a set of best practices for standard of care with regard to plagiarism, copyright, and fair use. As AI is likely to grow more capable in the coming years, it is appropriate to begin integrating AI into scholarly writing …
Birthing, Nursing, And Grieving: An Anthropological Archaeology Of Healing Shrines In North Lebanon, Sarah Mady
Birthing, Nursing, And Grieving: An Anthropological Archaeology Of Healing Shrines In North Lebanon, Sarah Mady
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This archaeological study of healing shrines in North Lebanon begins with the story of why scholars have neglected these shrines. It is not essential to identify a gap in the scholarship without understanding why this gap existed in the first place. Healing shrines were often associated with popular religion and women’s superstitions, and to understand their position in the historical landscape of North Lebanon, I begin by laying out the history of archeology in Lebanon. It is imperative for the reader of this study to understand how the discipline of archaeology was founded and practiced and its implications on the …
