Chronic Midsubstance Patellar Tendon And Retinacular Rupture: Primary Repair Enhancement Using Bioinductive Implant Augmentation, Brent A. Geers, Shariff K. Bishai
Orthopedics Articles
Midsubstance tears of the patellar tendon are uncommon and present a difficult injury to treat. If left untreated, these can be debilitating injuries for patients and leave them with an overall lack of function in the injured extremity. Compared to a proximal or distal patellar tendon rupture, midsubstance tears rely on tendon-to-tendon healing instead of bone to tendon healing. Given this situation, specific preoperative planning and the use of a bioinductive scaffolding allows surgeons to enhance the overall construct, while promoting a beneficial healing environment. Although the addition of bioinductive implants has grown in popularity for upper extremity injuries, few …

Species Identification Of Unknown Trees In Winona State Landscape Arboretum, Grant Daechsel
Student Research and Creative Projects 2022-2023
This project was designed to identify seven trees in the WSU Landscape Arboretum which could not be adequately identified using a dichotomous key. These trees include an oak (Quercus sp.), three pears (Pyrus sp.), two birches (Betula sp.), and an apple tree (Malus sp.). This project will benefit the WSU Landscape Arboretum in their effort to educate the WSU’s community about local plant life, while also confirming whether those trees should be present in the Arboretum. Specifically, if the pear trees are identified as invasive Callery pears which harm the native flora, their removal will be recommended. Chloroplast DNA was …

Daily use of multiple medications is commonplace for many Americans. While pharmacists monitor prescriptions for drug interactions, consumers rarely check the possible side effects when using an over-the-counter product. In this fictional case study, Sam is prescribed clomipramine and ciprofloxacin, while also taking Tylenol PM. All three medications are orally administered, and drug metabolism is catalyzed in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP450). CYP isoenzymes CYP1A2, CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 are responsible for clomipramine metabolism and formation of major bioactive metabolite desmethylclomipramine, while CYP2D6 hydroxylates clomipramine and metabolite into hydroxyclomipramine and hydroxydesmethylclomipramine, respectively. Multi-drug use can inhibit or induce metabolic …

A Quantitative Study Of Perceived Fitness And Nutrition Levels Of Secondary Educators In Relation To Their Overall Job Satisfaction Program At A Private Midwestern University, Jessica Arico
Dissertations
The profession of education traditionally embodies an idea of educating children on math, science, social studies, and English along with other elective course areas. In recent decades, however, the burnout rates and mental health of educators have become a subject of media attention and the basis for many new professional development programs. The one element wholly ignored in this space is the physiological wellbeing of educators and the impact physical health has on mental health and job satisfaction. This study set out to provide a baseline for beginning the discussion and future research on the physiological impact on educators and …

The functions and methods of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (NOURC) are described in its bylaws (NOURC 2010). The committee’s purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. Species for which the NOURC seeks documentation (NOURC Review List) can be found at the NOU website www.NOUbirds.org. Starting in 2020, the NOURC decided to deal mainly with those species deemed as Accidental on the “Official List of the Birds of Nebraska.” Casual species and out-of-range species are now summarized in the “Seasonal Reports” of the …

Nebraska Bird Review
On the morning of October 7, 2023, I observed Nebraska’s second Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) at Crystal Cove Park in South Sioux City, and the bird was subsequently seen by several other observers throughout that afternoon. Photo and video records were obtained (https://ebird.org/checklist/S151656716). The summer and fall of 2023 brought fourteen sightings to Iowa, though it is impossible to determine how many birds were involved (eBird, 2023). One of those sightings occurred in the northwestern part of the state at Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City when a single Limpkin was independently reported by two observers on …

Photon Interaction Parameters Of Some Chemical Compounds Found In Hard Tissue, Didar Swara Salih, Rafet Y
Polytechnic Journal
Photon interaction parameters of some chemical compounds in hard tissue were investigated in the energy range (1keV-100 GeV) by using the (NistXCom) program. These interaction parameters: mass attenuation coefficients (μρ), effective atomic number (Zeff), and electron density (Nel) as a measure of the absorption of photon energy by compounds in hard tissue. The events that cause absorption are the photoelectric effect, Compton effect, and pair formation events. Effective atomic numbers and electron densities of some compounds in hard tissue were calculated using the obtained mass attenuation coefficients. From the obtained data, the values of photon interaction parameters have been investigated …

Phylogenetic relationships within the oestroid subclades Rhinophorinae (Calliphoridae) and Polleniidae were reconstructed for the first time, applying a Sanger sequencing approach using the two protein-coding nuclear markers CAD (carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase 2, aspartate transcarbamylase, and dihydroorotase; 1794 bp) and MCS (molybdenum cofactor sulfurase; 2078 bp). Three genera of Polleniidae and nineteen genera of Rhinophorinae were analyzed together with a selection of taxa representing the major lineages of Oestroidea (non-rhinophorine Calliphoridae, Oestridae, Sarcophagidae, Tachinidae). The selected markers provide good resolution and moderate to strong support of the distal branches, but weak support for several deeper nodes. Polleniidae (cluster flies) emerge as monophyletic …

Comparative Efficacy Of Systemic And Combination Fungicides For The Control Of Alternaria Leaf Spot Of Cabbage, Patience U. Ishieze, Chinedu F. Amuji, Kevin I. Ugwuoke, Paul K. Baiyeri, Michael O. Eze
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Alternaria leaf spot of cabbage, caused by the Alternaria brassicicola, affects leaves of cabbages and often results in head rots causing severe decline in yield. in this work, the effects of systemic and combination fungicides on A. brassicicola mycelia growth in vitro and disease severity in field trials were investigated. the results of in vitro evaluation revealed that both fungicides significantly inhibited (p < 0.05) the growth of A. brassicicola under in vitro conditions. However, metal Axyl-M 6% was less effective with 100 μg/mL having only 30 ± 3.5% inhibition. on the other hand, 100 μg/mL of mancozeb 63% + carbendazim 12% had 94 ± 3.5% growth inhibition of A. brassicicola, respectively, under the same conditions. Dose-response analysis of the efficacy of the two fungicides showed that the LC50 of metal Axyl-M 6% and mancozeb 63% + carbendazim 12% were 125.52 ppm and 57.22 ppm, respectively, indicating the superiority of combination fungicide over systemic fungicide alone. Field studies showed that while manure type significantly impacted on biomass production (p < 0.001), it did not significantly affect disease severity. on the other hand, the frequency of fungicide application impacted on disease severity, with biweekly application leading to a significant reduction in disease severity after 10 weeks.
