Fractional Semilinear Neumann Problem With Critical Nonlinearity, Zhenfeng Jin, Hongrui Sun
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we consider the following critical fractional semilinear Neumann problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} (-\Delta)^{1/2}u+\lambda u=u^{\frac{n+1}{n-1}},~u>0\quad&\, \mathrm{in}\ \Omega,\\ \partial_\nu{u}=0 &\mathrm{on}\ \partial\Omega, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n~(n\geq5)$ is a smooth bounded domain, $\lambda>0$ and $\nu$ is the outward unit normal to $\partial\Omega$. We prove that there exists a constant $\lambda_0>0$ such that the above problem admits a minimal energy solution for $\lambda<\lambda_0$. Moreover, if $\Omega$ is convex, we show that this solution is constant for sufficiently small $\lambda$.

Camelina or false flax (Camelina sativa) is an emerging oilseed crop and a feedstock for biofuel production. This species is believed to originate from Western Asian and Eastern European regions, where the center of diversity of the Camelina genus is located. Cultivated Camelina species arose via a series of polyploidization events, serving as bottlenecks narrowing genetic diversity of the species. The genetic paucity of C. sativa is foreseen as the most crucial limitation for successful breeding and improvement of this crop. A potential solution to this challenge could be gene introgression from Camelina wild species or from …

Underrepresented minority (URM) university faculty can be identified as those whose representation based on gender, race, and/or ethnicity in particular fields, such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), are smaller than in the US population. Studies on URM faculty have found discrimination and affiliated stress impact faculty in many aspects of their work, such as performance in research. In the current study, we examined STEM faculty who self-identify as URM, their experiences of workplace discrimination, and how these encounters affect their self-determined motivation to conduct research. Six-hundred and fifty-one faculty from 10 US institutions completed an online survey. Of …

During the onset of neuropathic pain from a variety of etiologies, nociceptors become hypersensitized, releasing neurotransmitters and other factors from centrally-projecting nerve terminals within the dorsal spinal cord. Consequently, glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) in the spinal cord are activated and mediate the release of proinflammatory cytokines that act to enhance pain transmission and sensitize mechanical non-nociceptive fibers which ultimately results in light touch hypersensitivity, clinically observed as allodynia. Pramipexole, a D2/D3 preferring agonist, is FDA-approved for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and demonstrates efficacy in animal models of inflammatory pain. The clinical-stage investigational drug, R(+) enantiomer of pramipexole, dexpramipexole, …

Myocarditis is a predominant cause of congestive heart failure and sudden death in children and young adolescents that can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy. Lymphocytic myocarditis mediated by T cells can result from the recognition of cardiac antigens that may involve CD4 or CD8 T cells or both. In this report, we describe the generation of T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic mice on a C57BL/6 genetic background specific to cardiac myosin heavy chain (Myhc)-α 334–352 and make the following observations: First, we verified that Myhc-α 334–352 was immunogenic in wild-type C57BL/6 mice and induced antigen-specific CD4 T cell responses despite being …

Thin polymer coatings are used to improve the interface between biological species and functional materials. Their interaction is significantly influenced by the functional groups and roughness of the polymer film and prediction of the interaction is thus of great interest. However, for conventional polymer films, this cannot be examined independently because of the interplay of defects, residual solvent molecules, roughness, and functional groups. Solvent-free polymer films prepared by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) exhibit conformal, defect-free characteristics and enable precise tailoring of the functional groups. This facilitates to isolate the contribution of functional groups on the bio-interface performance. Consequently, in …

Fall Detection Method Of Digital Sequence Based On Fusion Strategy, Riming Sun, Hu Guo, Li Zou, Jiaqi Mao, Shengfa Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Falls have become the primary cause of disability due to injury for the elderly. Timely and accurate warning of fall events is an important link to rescue work. In order to improve the accuracy of fall detection, a fall detection method based on a fusion strategy is proposed, which considers both the integrity of high-dimensional digital sequences and the specificity of different dimensions. The input digital sequences obtained from the wrist portable sensor are processed by window segmentation according to the saliency of resultant acceleration, so as to ensure the timing of the data and improve the identifiability of …

Virtual Navigation Path Planning Based On Octree Potential Field For Endonasal Endoscope, Wenjing Li, Yanlin Luo, Yuhui Wang, Li Zhu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Virtual navigation can intuitively display the internal structure of human tissue from multiple viewpoints. The navigation path planning algorithm is the key to achieving excellent navigation effects. The traditional centerline extraction algorithm can ensure a wide field of view during navigation, but the time efficiency is not high enough on the complex nasal-skull base volume model. To solve the problem, a rapid navigation path planning algorithm based on the octree potential field is proposed. The space outside the obstacles is modeled by an octree, and the octree potential field is constructed by calculating the potential of all the octree …

Dispensing With Reductionism And Dualism: Biological Anthropological Perspectives Towards Understanding Disease, Epidemics, And Pandemics, Anne Grauer
Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
At no time in recent history has the topic of disease, epidemics and pandemics been more at the forefront of public conversation than it is now. Previously, the threat of epidemics such as Ebola, the 1918 influenza epidemic, and the plague, were commonly framed as “back then” or “over there.” Perhaps COVID ended the public's delusion. For biological anthropologists, however, the perspective has differed appreciably. Pandemics and epidemics are viewed as integral and repeated aspects of human existence, and the kindling to start an outbreak of gargantuan proportion has been delicately stacked for centuries (if not millennia). If the public …

Research On Artificial Population Generation And Application Based On Genetic Algorithm, Hongli Zhang, Jingshuang Deng
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: High-precision micro-population data are one of the key basic data for simulation systems such as disease spread, traffic travel, and emergency events. In reality, computer-generated artificial populations are often used for simulation. Due to computational efficiency and standardization of generation steps, the iterative proportional fitting method is currently used for artificial population synthesis. However, it has strict requirements on basic data and faces zero-unit and data representational deviation problems, and it fails to guarantee the fitting at the individual and family levels at the same time. In order to overcome this deficiency, an improved genetic algorithm using a simulated …

Effect Of Calorie Restriction On The Expression Of Sirtuin1 As An Antiaging Biomarker, Raya Makarim Penantian, Radiana Dhewayani Antarianto, Novi Silvia Hardiany
Makara Journal of Science
Calorie restriction (CR) is the most effective method for delaying aging and preventing the onset of age-related diseases. Sirtuins constitute a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent histone deacetylases. Their activity can be regulated by NAD+/NADH levels, which are influenced by nutrient intake, a variable acted upon by CR. This review elaborates on the link between CR and sirtuin1 (SIRT1). It retrieved articles from several sources, such as ClinicalKey, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. It discusses the up-to-date knowledge of how SIRT1 acts as a nutrient sensor and regulator of molecular mechanisms. These mechanisms include the control of the cell …

In-Silico Approach For Predicting The Inhibitory Effect Of Home Remedies On Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2, Shankar Thapa, Mahalakshmi Suresha Biradar, Janmajoy Banerjee, Dipanjan Karati
Makara Journal of Science
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 is an infectious disease caused by coronavirus and spreads through infected droplets inhalation. For the past 3 years, COVID-19 has become a global threat. Vaccinations are currently available and have FDA approval. During the recent pandemic, people adopted a psychological belief that home remedies (turmeric, ginger, garlic, and coriander) can prevent COVID-19. This research aimed to predict the covid-19 inhibitory activities by home remedies through an in-silico approach. The 24 bioactive constituents of four home remedies plants were downloaded from PubChem and subjected to molecular docking with the three important proteins responsible for COVID-19 pathogenesis. …

Detection of E. coli bacteria in water samples can indicate the presence of other bacterial contamination in feces. Bacterial contamination can be treated with antibiotics, but excessive use of antibiotics leads to the emergence of multiresistant bacteria. Therefore, alternative antibacterial agents must be explored. Copper ion/zeolite composite has been widely studied as an antibacterial agent. However, the released copper ions accumulate in water and are toxic to humans; this can be prevented by converting copper ions into copper oxides (CuO and Cu2O). In this study, copper oxide/zeolite composite is synthesized and characterized using the heating method, followed by …

Plant extracts can be used to synthesize nanoparticle because it is efficient, economical, and friendly to the environment. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were synthesized using an aqueous fraction of Vitis vinifera L leaf extract and Cu(NO3)2 solution as a precursor. This fraction contains secondary metabolites as a reduction agent and stabilizing agents to formed CuO NPs. CuO NPs can be used as a catalyst in a chemical reaction, one of which is the Doebner reaction, which is a simple and efficient reaction of aniline, aromatic aldehydes, and pyruvic acid under reflux conditions to produce derivatives quinoline-4-carboxylic …

Resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy frequently emerges in the later stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tumorigenesis. The decreased response of NPC to radiotherapy and chemotherapy occurs owing to the inhibition of cancer cell apoptosis by the B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) protein. Thus, inhibiting BCL-2 protein may become a powerful approach to eliminate NPC through apoptosis regulation. Meanwhile, Pogostemon cablin is reported to exhibit anticancer properties, but there are limited studies on its use for NPC treatment. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential bioactive compounds in P. cablin as anti-apoptosis BCL-2 protein inhibitors using in-silico approach. Natural compounds …

Herein, bionanocomposites of chitosan (CS)/silver nanoparticle/organoclay/zinc oxide nanoparticle (CS/Ag/OC/ZnO) were prepared for antibacterial food packaging. This study examines the time variation in the AgNP synthesis method by comparing local (74˗85% deacetylated) and commercial chitosan (75%˗85% deacetylated) as a reducing and capping agent and seeks to reconstruct the optimum ratio formulations of AgNPs and ZnONPs in bionanocomposites for food packaging. The results reveal that the synthesis of AgNPs was successfully carried out using a local chitosan solution as a reducing and capping agent. The CS/Ag/OC/ZnO films exhibit structural, mechanical, and optical properties suitable for food packaging and antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus …

During central nervous system (CNS) development, a precisely patterned vasculature emerges to support CNS function. How neurons control angiogenesis is not well understood. Here, we show that the neuromodulator dopamine restricts vascular development in the retina via temporally limited production by an unexpected neuron subset. Our genetic and pharmacological experiments demonstrate that elevating dopamine levels inhibits tip-cell sprouting and vessel growth, whereas reducing dopamine production by all retina neurons increases growth. Dopamine production by canonical dopaminergic amacrine interneurons is dispensable for these events. Instead, we found that temporally restricted dopamine production by retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) modulates vascular development. RGCs …

Biallelic variants in the Golgi SNAP receptor complex member 2 gene (GOSR2) have been reported in progressive myoclonus epilepsy with neurodegeneration. Typical clinical features include ataxia and areflexia during early childhood, followed by seizures, scoliosis, dysarthria, and myoclonus. Here, we report two novel patients from unrelated families with a GOSR2-related disorder and novel genetic and clinical findings. The first patient, a male compound heterozygous for the GOSR2 splice site variant c.336+1G>A and the novel c.364G>A,p.Glu122Lys missense variant showed global developmental delay and seizures at the age of 2 years, followed by myoclonus at the age …

The determinants of severe disease caused by West Nile virus (WNV) and why only ~1% of individuals progress to encephalitis remain poorly understood. Here, we use human and mouse enteroids, and a mouse model of pathogenesis, to explore the capacity of WNV to directly infect gastrointestinal (GI) tract cells and contribute to disease severity. At baseline, WNV poorly infects human and mouse enteroid cultures and enterocytes in mice. However, when STAT1 or type I interferon (IFN) responses are absent, GI tract cells become infected, and this is associated with augmented GI tract and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, accumulation of gut-derived …
