Patient Outcomes Following The Implementation Of A Cardiogenic Shock Algorithm, Alana E. Hall
Patient Outcomes Following The Implementation Of A Cardiogenic Shock Algorithm, Alana E. Hall
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) is one of the leading causes of cardiogenic shock (CS) associated with increased in-hospital mortality. Despite multiple efforts to improve outcomes, mortality remains high.
Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to analyze the impact of a cardiogenic shock algorithm on survival to discharge for STEMI patients.
Methods: A CS algorithm was implemented at a cardiac catheterization laboratory on October 3, 2022. Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act quality improvement framework, data was retrospectively collected on patients presenting with a STEMI who meet CS criteria to determine if there was improved survival to discharge after implementing …

Impact Of A Toolkit On Fall Prevention In An Acute Midsized Rehabilitation Facility In The Southeast, Shantai D. Allen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Older people in hospitals may face a greater risk of falls due to the use of medication, lower body weakness, and some difficulty with balance and walking. Over the past five years, there has been a steady increase in the prevalence of falls with the targeted unit reporting over 5 falls per 1000 patient days, which is higher than the national average. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to decrease falls and decrease falls with injuries in this patient population. Methods: The project employed a pre-post intervention design that measured fall incidence in the targeted unit after …

Assessing Organizational Readiness For Evidence-Based Practice (Ebp) Change For The Implementation Of A Postoperative Neuropathic Mastalgia (Pnm) Scale Among General Surgery Ambulatory Practices, Jessica Terry Gonzalez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Assessing postoperative neuropathic mastalgia (PNM) among oncology breast surgical patients is not commonly performed using a surgery specific pain scale at large South Carolina healthcare organization and is historically misdiagnosed, mismanaged, despite representing a common and significant complication (Gong et al., 2020; Humble et al., 2015; Mejdahl et al., 2019). Studies show that early identification of patients with neuropathic-specific pain following breast cancer-related surgery facilitates better pain management and patient outcomes (Pereira et al., 2017; Sipilä et al., 2012). Assessing organizational readiness to adopt Evidence-Based Practice change is recommended to facilitate the identification of potential barriers to implementation …

The ability to recognize and associate objects with prior experiences has been demonstrated in several avian taxa. Corvids, for example, recognize visual stimuli associated with negative previous experiences and will modify their behavioral responses according to the level of perceived threat. However, the extent to which similar memory-based behaviors exist in seabirds is poorly understood. Our study investigated object recognition by Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus smithsonianus) on their breeding grounds, the site of a long-term monitoring project. When handling gulls and conducting field research, researchers wear standard bicycle helmets as a protective measure against physical aggression by nesting …

Social And Biological Perspectives To Investigate And Address Illegal Shooting Of Raptors, Eve Thomason, Kenneth Wallen, Todd Katzner
Social And Biological Perspectives To Investigate And Address Illegal Shooting Of Raptors, Eve Thomason, Kenneth Wallen, Todd Katzner
Raptor Research Center Publications and Presentations
Humans have shot raptors for centuries. However, in many countries these actions have been illegal since the mid-twentieth century. Despite this history, there is not a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of this activity, its frequency, and why it occurs. We used literature review and principles drawn from ecology, sociology, and criminology to understand this problem. First, we review literature on raptor shooting globally to explore documented motivations for shooting and we describe the history of raptor shooting in the United States of America (USA). Then, to illustrate the contemporary frequency and geographic breadth of the shooting of raptors, we …
What's Not Natural Phenomena? Let's Consider A Three-Step Innovative Concept Test For Composition Of Matter Claims, Sydney Hancock
What's Not Natural Phenomena? Let's Consider A Three-Step Innovative Concept Test For Composition Of Matter Claims, Sydney Hancock
IP Theory
Biotechnology innovation is rapidly growing, especially in the realm of biotech. This growth leads to questions about patent subject matter eligibility of natural phenomena. For example, currently the human genome and microbiome are being extensively studied, bacteriophages are being edited, animals are being cloned, and CRISPR is widespread. Additionally, composition of matter patent claims give the most protection to patent holders. Therefore, knowing when a natural phenomenon veers into human innovation is important for courts, lawyers, and innovators in the era of biotechnology and genetic engineering.
Part I discusses the history of Supreme Court cases on natural phenomena subject matter …
Dobbs' Sex Equality Troubles, Marc Spindelman
Dobbs' Sex Equality Troubles, Marc Spindelman
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This article takes up what Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Org. may mean for sex equality rights beyond the abortion setting. It details how Dobbs lays the foundation for rolling back and even eliminating Fourteenth Amendment sex equality protections. The work scales these possibilities against a different dimension of the ruling that’s yet to receive the attention that it merits. An important footnote in Dobbs, Footnote 22, sketches a new history-and-tradition-based approach to unenumerated rights under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Privileges or Immunities Clause. The jurisprudence that this Footnote capacitates could transform the constitutional landscape via new economic and social …

Aims The association between prolactin and mortality has been less studied, and findings were inconsistent among different populations. We aimed to investigate the association between serum prolactin (PRL) and mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study of 10 907 patients with at least 2 prolactin measurements within 2 years since and results their first inpatient diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Baseline and mean values of serum PRL were used as exposures. A multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the association between PRL and mortality. During a mean follow-up of 5.34 …

Exome sequencing (ES) is now a relatively straightforward process to identify causal variants in Mendelian disorders. However, the same is not true for ES in families where the inheritance patterns are less clear, and a complex etiology is suspected. Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are highly heritable birth defects with both Mendelian and complex etiologies. The phenotypic spectrum of OFCs may include overt clefts and several subclinical phenotypes, such as discontinuities in the orbicularis oris muscle (OOM) in the upper lip, velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), microform clefts or bifid uvulas. We hypothesize that expanding the OFC phenotype to include these phenotypes can clarify …

Multimodal astrocyte–neuron communications govern brain circuitry assembly and function. For example, through rapid glutamate release, astrocytes can control excitability, plasticity and synchronous activity of synaptic networks, while also contributing to their dysregulation in neuropsychiatric conditions. For astrocytes to communicate through fast focal glutamate release, they should possess an apparatus for Ca2+-dependent exocytosis similar to neurons. However, the existence of this mechanism has been questioned owing to inconsistent data and a lack of direct supporting evidence. Here we revisited the astrocyte glutamate exocytosis hypothesis by considering the emerging molecular heterogeneity of astrocytes and using molecular, bioinformatic and imaging approaches, together with …

International Dialogue
Slavoj Žižek’s Surplus-Enjoyment-A Guide for the Non-Perplexed is a difficult book. Reading it requires a different approach from what is usual with what seems to us more standardized philosophical or social scientific prose. Our approach initially at least no doubt assumes as our starting point a deploying of our shared norms, shaped by our backgrounds as U.S. based scholars aiming to advance dialogue with Žižek and some of the wide variety of authors with whom Žižek himself engages.

Politics By Other Means: The Jurisprudence Of “Common Good Constitutionalism”, Brian Leiter
Politics By Other Means: The Jurisprudence Of “Common Good Constitutionalism”, Brian Leiter
University of Chicago Law Review
Professor Adrian Vermeule proposes an alternative to what he sees as the two dominant schools of constitutional interpretation in the United States: originalism and what he usually calls “progressivism”1 (by which he means what others call “living constitutionalism”2 ). Against these approaches, he advocates for what Freudians might call a “return of the repressed”3: a recognition of the extent to which the “classical” natural law tradition’s concern with the “common good” has continued to animate our public law—explicitly for much of our history, he says, and implicitly more recently.
On Vermeule’s proposed alternative, courts (and other …
Optimizing Crop Productivity And Fertility Practices In Intermediate Wheatgrass, Roberta Bianchin Rebesquini
Optimizing Crop Productivity And Fertility Practices In Intermediate Wheatgrass, Roberta Bianchin Rebesquini
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The intensive management associated with many annual crops often includes recurring tillage, fertilization, and pesticide applications, which contribute to environmental concerns such as water pollution and soil erosion. Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium), recognized under the trade name Kernza®, is a perennial grass that can be managed to produce grain and biomass while providing desired environmental benefits such as soil conservation and nutrient cycling. There has been limited research on best management practices and crop productivity for this alternative dual-use crop in Nebraska. A field experiment was conducted beginning in 2021 to assess nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium …

Vaccine Development, The China Dilemma, And International Regulatory Challenges, Peter K. Yu
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the role played by China in the development of international regulatory standards at the intersection of intellectual prop- erty, international trade, and public health. It begins by briefly discussing the role China has played in the global health arena during the COVID-19 pandemic. The article then highlights the difficulty in determining how best to engage with the country in the development of new international regula- tory standards. It shows that the preferred method of engagement will likely depend on one’s perspective on China’s potential contributions and hin- drances: a perspective that focuses on global competition—in the economic, …
What Do Law Professors Believe About Law And The Legal Academy?, Eric H. Martinez, Kevin Tobia
What Do Law Professors Believe About Law And The Legal Academy?, Eric H. Martinez, Kevin Tobia
Faculty Scholarship
Legal scholarship is replete with debates about competing legal theories: textualism or purposivism; formalism or realism; natural law or positivism; prison reform or abolition; universal or culturally specific human rights? Despite voluminous literature about these debates, great uncertainty remains about which views experts endorse. This Article presents the first dataset of American law professors’ views about legal theory. A study of over six hundred law professors reveals expert consensus and dissensus about dozens of longstanding debates.
Law professors also debate questions about the legal academy. These include descriptive questions: Which subjects (for example, constitutional law) and methods (for example, law …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The role that underwater image translation plays assists in generating rare images for marine applications. However, such translation tasks are still challenging due to data lacking, insufficient feature extraction ability, and the loss of content details. To address these issues, we propose a novel multi-scale image translation model based on style-independent discriminators and attention modules (SID-AM-MSITM), which learns the mapping relationship between two unpaired images for translation. We introduce Convolution Block Attention Modules (CBAM) to the generators and discriminators of SID-AM-MSITM to improve its feature extraction ability. Moreover, we construct style-independent discriminators that enable the discriminant results of SID-AM-MSITM to …

Global biodiversity hotspots are often remote, tectonically active areas undergoing climatic fluctuations, such as the Himalaya Mountains and neighboring Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). They provide biogeographic templates upon which endemic biodiversity can be mapped to infer diversification scenarios. Yet, this process can be somewhat opaque for the Himalaya, given substantial data gaps separating eastern and western regions. To help clarify, we evaluated phylogeographic and phylogenetic hypotheses for a widespread fish (Snowtrout: Cyprininae; Schizothorax) by sequencing 1,140 base pair of mtDNA cytochrome-b (cytb) from Central Himalaya samples (Nepal: N = 53; Bhutan: N = 19), augmented with 68 GenBank …
