Salsolinol (1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-6,7-diol) is a close structural analogue of dopamine with an asymmetric center at the C1 position, and its presence in vivo, both in humans and rodents, has already been proven. Yet, given the fact that salsolinol colocalizes with dopamine-rich regions and was first detected in the urine of Parkinson's disease patients, its direct role in the process of neurodegeneration has been proposed. Here, we report that

Background The relationship between mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA CN) and cardiovascular disease remains elusive. Methods and Results We performed cross-sectional and prospective association analyses of blood-derived mtDNA CN and cardiovascular disease outcomes in 27 316 participants in 8 cohorts of multiple racial and ethnic groups with whole-genome sequencing. We also performed Mendelian randomization to explore causal relationships of mtDNA CN with coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiometabolic risk factors (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia).

Danon disease is a rare X-linked autophagic vacuolar cardioskeletal myopathy associated with severe heart failure that can be accompanied with extracardiac neurologic, skeletal, and ophthalmologic manifestations. It is caused by loss of function variants in the LAMP2 gene and is among the most severe and penetrant of the genetic cardiomyopathies. Most patients with Danon disease will experience symptomatic heart failure. Male individuals generally present earlier than women and die of either heart failure or arrhythmia or receive a heart transplant by the third decade of life. Herein, the authors review the differential diagnosis of Danon disease, diagnostic criteria, natural history, …

Rab GTPases are important regulators of intracellular vesicular trafficking. RAB5C is a member of the Rab GTPase family that plays an important role in the endocytic pathway, membrane protein recycling and signaling. Here we report on 12 individuals with nine different heterozygous de novo variants in RAB5C. All but one patient with missense variants (n = 9) exhibited macrocephaly, combined with mild-to-moderate developmental delay. Patients with loss of function variants (n = 2) had an apparently more severe clinical phenotype with refractory epilepsy and intellectual disability but a normal head circumference. Four missense variants were investigated experimentally. In vitro biochemical …

“She Had Snatched Their Trophy”: “Lanval,” “Beowulf,” And The Weaver-Cum-Warrior, Margaret Mcfarlane Oct 2023

“She Had Snatched Their Trophy”: “Lanval,” “Beowulf,” And The Weaver-Cum-Warrior, Margaret Mcfarlane

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

How was masculinity defined, and for whom, in medieval English epic? Employing Marie de France’s “Lanval” and the anonymous “Beowulf ” as example cases, when examining the social role of gender rather than focus on sexuality as defined by genitalia, these poems flip the script. Wherein titular male-identifying characters swap social responsibilities with female-identifying foils; Beowulf and Lanval become “weaving” humans, while Lanval's lover and Grendel’s Mother take on the “weaponed” roles in order to protect the material existence of their communities. By examining these exchanges, as well as characters that embody the gender role that is expected of them, …

Ekphrasis In Ecocriticism: Auden’S “Musée Des Beaux Arts” And Bruegel’S “Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus”, Chloe N. Young Oct 2023

Ekphrasis In Ecocriticism: Auden’S “Musée Des Beaux Arts” And Bruegel’S “Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus”, Chloe N. Young

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

If ekphrasisis a literary description of a visual work of art, and ecocriticism uses literature to study nature and ecological concerns, how do the two mix? The ekphrastic poem “Musée des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden not only expands the understanding of the genre but also broadens the understanding of nature. Auden’s poem is quintessentially ekphrastic, yet it has never been examined in terms of how it is both informed by and informs an eco-critical reading. Auden and Pieter Bruegel, the painter of “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” upon which Auden based his poem, express nature through the imagery …

Strenuous Exercise Increases The Risk Of Oxidative Stress In Ironman Triathlon Participants, Noelle L. Cutter, Emily Cruz, Frank Cristall Iii, Kristen Lacey Oct 2023

Strenuous Exercise Increases The Risk Of Oxidative Stress In Ironman Triathlon Participants, Noelle L. Cutter, Emily Cruz, Frank Cristall Iii, Kristen Lacey

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Regular physical activity has been linked to greater overall health. Literature review and studies have also defined regular physical activity as a reducer of life-threatening illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. However, long increments of strenuous exercise can produce oxidative stress and muscle fatigue in the human body. The increase in oxygen consumption during strenuous exercise leads to elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS). Cells continuously produce free radicals and reactive oxygen species as part of metabolic processes in the body. These free radicals are neutralized by an antioxidant defense system in the body consisting of enzymes, such as …

“We’Ll Cook Him Up In A Stew”: Stepmothers And Primogeniture In The Brothers Grimm’S The Juniper Tree, Kymberlin Bush

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

What larger social concern could the continued popularity of the nineteenth-century cannibal stepmother narrative in twenty-first century crime and news reporting be indicating? In this paper, I compare a fictional episode of cannibalism in the non-canonical Brothers Grimms’ tale, “The Juniper Tree,” with the true story of the 2010 murder and subsequent dismemberment of Zahra Baker in Hickory, North Carolina to consider the larger cultural implications of cannibalistic stepmothers. In doing so I argue that, despite the half-hearted attempt by mainstream animation studios to try to create semi-Feminist adaptations of the canonical fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, Hans …

What's At Stake: Is It A Vampire Or A Virus?, Kaitlin M. Schneider

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Vampires have been discussed for millennia, appearing in folklore throughout various cultures. From the Egyptians and the Chinese to the Slavs, there have been numerous iterations of these bloodsucking fiends, but do their characteristics have any basis in fact, perhaps predicated upon misunderstandings of certain diseases?Using medical journals to discern plausible diseases for obscure and typical vampire traits, this paper functions on two levels. On one hand, it offers a repository of medical information for researchers who may want to delve further into the interdisciplinary field of pathology and folklore, especially where vampires of Western culture are concerned. On the …

Analyzing And Designing An Arduino Controlled System To Study The Effect Of Changing Water Levels On Water Flow Through Sediments, Andrea M. Bonetto, Sheiny Tjia-Fleck, Ethan Zeller, Bradley Wheeler Oct 2023

Analyzing And Designing An Arduino Controlled System To Study The Effect Of Changing Water Levels On Water Flow Through Sediments, Andrea M. Bonetto, Sheiny Tjia-Fleck, Ethan Zeller, Bradley Wheeler

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

The hyporheic zone is the region of sediment under a stream where water from the stream flows before returning to the stream itself. Many studies focus on steady water flow through this region, however, in natural systems, water levels and water flow rates change due to storms, tides, dams, or melting snow. To investigate flow under unsteady conditions, we built a system that allows us to control the water level and thus the flow rates. We used a pressure sensor that is connected to an Arduino board to measure the water level. The Arduino board uses the measured pressure value …

Gender-Neutral Language In Christian Universities, Adi F. Mcnally Oct 2023

Gender-Neutral Language In Christian Universities, Adi F. Mcnally

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Award for Best Conference Paper2018 Northwest Undergraduate Conference in the HumanitiesThis paper provides brief summation of the methods transphobia are embodied through language and what the logical, moral, and business implications would be for a Christian University. In this paper, Adi McNally (who uses they/them pronouns) explores whether there is both scientific and theological weight behind transphobic and gendered language choices. They connect the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity to discussions around epicene pronouns and English grammatical development. Their argument explores writings from Doctors Lawrence Mayer and Paul McHugh, and its impact on traditionally conservative Christian thought. Further, they discuss …

The Social Epistemology Of Anthropology: Insights From Judgment Aggregation, Dagan Douglas Oct 2023

The Social Epistemology Of Anthropology: Insights From Judgment Aggregation, Dagan Douglas

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Anthropological writings have, at times, been vague in the approach used to gather evidence of cultural and social beliefs of the peoples studied, and the method of representing the data to the reading public. This paper employs the theory of judgment aggregation in critiquing anthropological theory and practice. It will be structured in three parts: first, I will present the theory of judgment aggregation as constructed by Christian List and Philip Pettit; second, I will sketch some epistemological methods used by anthropologists, and assess their attitude toward the notions of judgment aggregation and group agency; and finally, I will apply …

Belief Revision In The Context Of Hume’S Treatise And Contemporary Psychology, Sarah Paquette Oct 2023

Belief Revision In The Context Of Hume’S Treatise And Contemporary Psychology, Sarah Paquette

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

This paper examines the emotional and social motivations of belief and belief correction. As beliefs motivate one’s actions, one must examine how one revises an erroneous or harmful belief and what methodology one can employ in order to best facilitate this revision, resulting in more conscientious action. This paper examines belief formation and revision in the context of David Hume’s 1739-1740 work A Treatise of Human Nature, with particular attention to not only Hume’s account of belief and belief revision, but also the interaction of passions, the mechanism of sympathy, reason, and probability judgments. It is hypothesized Hume’s theory of …

Applications Of Medico-Legal Entomology: Using Insects For Forensic And Environmental Investigations, Denise Gemmellaro Oct 2023

Applications Of Medico-Legal Entomology: Using Insects For Forensic And Environmental Investigations, Denise Gemmellaro

Sustainability Seminar Series

Forensic entomology is the application of entomology (the study of insects and arthropods) to forensic investigations. Medico-legal entomology focuses on those groups of insects that are attracted to decomposing organic matter. Dr. Gemmellaro’s work is mainly focused on medico-legal entomology. Once a dead body is exposed to the elements, insects will shortly locate the body and will colonize it by laying eggs on it; one of the major groups of colonizers is the true fly family of blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Blow fly females need a decomposing body to lay their eggs; the eggs will hatch into maggots and the …

Land Education And Young People Working Toward Salamander: Collective Well-Being In Response To Bioindicators Of Socioenvironmental Justice, Rachael Arens, Ricardo Martinez

Democracy & Education

Our planet is facing many environmental challenges, including climate change, loss of biodiversity and habitat, and pollution, while many of our populations are also experiencing marginalization due to poverty, race, gender, language, ability, and environmental injustices. Environmental hazards and policies often impact those in society who are most at-risk, creating a need for an environmental education (EE) movement that encourages students to challenge and regain control of a system that impacts them. Teachers can implement a reflection tool known as the SALAMANDER Collective Well-Being in Response to Bioindicators of Socioenvironmental Justice Framework to prompt students and other educators to place …

Understanding Functional Benefits Of Isoleucine And Arginine On Poultry Performance And Health., Roshan Adhikari, Jason T. Lee, Keith Haydon

Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference

Poultry industry is rapidly moving towards utilizing the best ingredients to precisely feed the birds for better performance, welfare, health, and profitability. One of the practices that evolved over time with research is better optimization of amino acid utilization in the diets thus changing the crude protein landscape. Historically, if we compare the modern diets to diets from 1980, significant changes are visible in the use of unbound or crystalline amino acids leading to reduced levels of CP and reduced unutilized nitrogen in the diets. Multiple feed-grade amino acids are available in a cost-effective manner in poultry diets. Multiple research …

Trna Dysregulation In Neurodevelopmental And Neurodegenerative Diseases., Robert W. Burgess, Erik Storkebaum Oct 2023

Trna Dysregulation In Neurodevelopmental And Neurodegenerative Diseases., Robert W. Burgess, Erik Storkebaum

Faculty Research 2023

Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) decode messenger RNA codons to peptides at the ribosome. The nuclear genome contains many tRNA genes for each amino acid and even each anticodon. Recent evidence indicates that expression of these tRNAs in neurons is regulated, and they are not functionally redundant. When specific tRNA genes are nonfunctional, this results in an imbalance between codon demand and tRNA availability. Furthermore, tRNAs are spliced, processed, and posttranscriptionally modified. Defects in these processes lead to neurological disorders. Finally, mutations in the aminoacyl tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) also lead to disease. Recessive mutations in several aaRSs cause syndromic disorders, while dominant …

The Family And The Nation: The Centrality Of Gender Politics In The Rise Of European Illiberalism, Julia E. Hall Oct 2023

The Family And The Nation: The Centrality Of Gender Politics In The Rise Of European Illiberalism, Julia E. Hall

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

This paper analyzes how illiberal far-right parties employ discourses of traditional family values to advocate a range of anti-feminist, anti-queer, and anti-sexual education stances that have become critical in European national politics. Illiberal politicians use the concept of "traditional family" to reassert heteronormative ideas of gender and sexuality that advance their majoritarian, nationalist, and anti-pluralist platforms while infringing on the rights and freedoms of gender and sexual minorities. I explore three realms where this family-centered rhetoric presents itself in policy and political movements—gender roles and reproduction, LGBTQ+ rights, and sexual education—and analyze relevant actors, movements, and policies demonstrating the central …

Assessing The Toxicity Of Selected Pesticides To Trichogramma Ostriniae (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) Pupae As A First Step In The Development Of A Potential Novel Deployment Programme, Jeffrey D. Cluever, Clint W. Beiermann, Nevin C. Lawrence, Jeff Bradshaw Oct 2023

Lawrence, Jeff Bradshaw

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Trichogramma spp. have been used or have been proposed for use in biological control programmes of lepidopteran pests, including the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, and the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana. Releases are typically made by placing cards with parasitised eggs at set points in the field. However, this method can be cost-prohibitive due to its laborious nature. As a result, labour-saving mechanised release programmes have been developed, including distribution by spray equipment. However, few have investigated applying Trichogramma with a standard pesticide application (i.e. ‘tank mix’). As a first step to …
