Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera Oct 2023

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quantification of the true number of stained cells in specific brain regions is an important metric in many fields of biomedical research involving cell degeneration, cytotoxicology, cellular inflammation, and drug development for a wide range of neurological disorders and mental illnesses. Unbiased stereology is the current state-of-the-art method for collecting the cell count data from tissue sections. These studies require trained experts to manually focus through a z-stack of microscopy images and count (click) on a hundred or more cells per case, making this approach time consuming (~1 hour per case) and prone to human error (i.e., inter-rater variability). Thus, …

Sex differences in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development are regulated by sex and non-sex chromosomes, sex hormones, and environmental factors. We previously reported that Ncoa5(+/-) mice develop HCC in a male-biased manner. Here we show that NCOA5 expression is reduced in male patient HCCs while the expression of an NCOA5-interacting tumor suppressor, TIP30, is lower in female HCCs. Tip30 heterozygous deletion does not change HCC incidence in Ncoa5(+/-) male mice but dramatically increases HCC incidence in Ncoa5(+/-) female mice, accompanied by hepatic hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel 3 (HCN3) overexpression. HCN3 overexpression cooperates with MYC to promote mouse HCC development, whereas …

Analyzing Prominent Genes In Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (All), Shima Z. Omar Oct 2023

Analyzing Prominent Genes In Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (All), Shima Z. Omar

Honors College Theses

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of childhood cancer. Leukemia is a type of cancer that involves the bone marrow and blood. This research study examined prominent genes in the disease. Two groups of genes, tumor suppressor and cell differentiation, were compared using statistical analysis to compare their binding potential and epigenetic potential. It is most likely that I failed to detect significant differences either because these genes’ function in the disease etiology is not strongly contexed to changes in expression, or that the magnitude of the differences were too slight to be detected with these methods. …

Exploring The Dynamic Reading Of Environment Towards A Multidimensional Legibility, Putri Mahsa Gantari, Ferro Yudistira Oct 2023

Exploring The Dynamic Reading Of Environment Towards A Multidimensional Legibility, Putri Mahsa Gantari, Ferro Yudistira

ARSNET

This study investigates the understanding of legibility, defined as the coherency of built environment features. Legibility enables production of mental image that helps individuals with their spatial navigation. The current discussion positions legibility as an objective aspect in the process of making sense of the environment. The study argues that such a process has dynamics that reflect individuals' subjectivity, therefore further study is important to reconcile the objective and subjective reading of legibility. This research qualitatively investigates legibility using a case study of an indoor environment of a shopping mall in East Jakarta. The analysis was conducted based on the …

Iranian Music, Silence, And The Representation Of The Traditional Masculine Figure Of The Pahlavan: A Case Study Of "Dash Akol" (1971), Kamyar Salavati

Regards

The Persian term pahlavan represents an archetypal character of a strong man who is generous, uncorrupted, and humble in the face of weakness. This paper will focus on sonic aspects of the pahlavan by zooming in on one of Masoud Kimiai’s films, Dash Akol (1971), which is based on a story of the same name by Sadegh Hedayat. First, I will concentrate on how the movie links heroic masculinity to the Persian classical music mode Chahargah and the instrument tombak-e zurkhaneh, and contrasts it with the tragic and romantic associations of Dashti, another Persian classical mode, representing another, …

Multiple Light Signaling Pathways Control Solar Tracking In Sunflowers, Christopher J. Brooks, Hagop S. Atamian, Stacey L. Harmer

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Sunflowers are famous for their ability to track the sun throughout the day and then reorient at night to face east the following morning. This occurs by differential growth patterns, with the east sides of stems growing more during the day and the west sides of stems growing more at night. This process, termed heliotropism, is generally believed to be a specialized form of phototropism; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. To better understand heliotropism, we compared gene expression patterns in plants undergoing phototropism in a controlled environment and in plants initiating and maintaining heliotropic growth in the field. We …

Osc-Co2: Coattention And Cosegmentation Framework For Plant State Change With Multiple Features, Rubi Quiñones, Ashok Samal, Sruti Das Choudhury, Francisco Muñoz-Arriola

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Cosegmentation and coattention are extensions of traditional segmentation methods aimed at detecting a common object (or objects) in a group of images. Current cosegmentation and coattention methods are ineffective for objects, such as plants, that change their morphological state while being captured in different modalities and views. The Object State Change using Coattention-Cosegmentation (OSC-CO2) is an end-to-end unsupervised deep-learning framework that enhances traditional segmentation techniques, processing, analyzing, selecting, and combining suitable segmentation results that may contain most of our target object’s pixels, and then displaying a final segmented image. The framework leverages coattention-based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and …

Effects Of A Major Hurricane On Dynamics, Structure, And Composition Of Mississippi River Delta Forests, Lance C. Umlang Oct 2023

Effects Of A Major Hurricane On Dynamics, Structure, And Composition Of Mississippi River Delta Forests, Lance C. Umlang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclones recurrently influence coastal forests worldwide. Tree survival (resistance) and post-cyclone recruitment (resilience) can vary with cyclone intensity, producing differences in composition, arboreal structure, and dynamics among affected forests. Studies of tropical cyclone wind effects on coastal forests typically emphasize damage more than post-cyclone responses. We hypothesized that intense cyclones might produce large, stratum-dependent effects that prevent affected forests from returning to pre-storm conditions. We explored direct effects of major Hurricane Katrina and post-hurricane changes in oak-dominated bottomland and cypress/tupelo-dominated swamp forests within the inactive portion of the Mississippi River deltaic plain. Overall mortality was high (14-25%) but concentrated …

Water-Soluble Phthalocyanine Photosensitizers For Photodynamic Therapy, İpek Ömeroğlu, Mahmut Durmuş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on a photochemical reaction that is started when a photosensitizing process is activated by the light and results in the death of tumor cells. Solubility is crucial in PDT applications to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of phthalocyanines, but, unfortunately, most phthalocyanines show limited solubility especially in water. To increase the solubility of phthalocyanines in polar solvents and water, ionic groups such as -SO3 - , -NR3 +, -COO- , and nonionic groups such as poly-oxy chains are frequently added to the peripheral or nonperipheral positions of the phthalocyanine framework. Since water-solubility and NIR-absorbing …

Kewarganegaraan Inklusif: Menempatkan Model Budaya Disabilitas Dalam Teori Multikultural Liberal Will Kymlicka, Hanandhia Lindsy Rustam, Lg. Saraswati Putri

Multikultura
