The Detection Of Putative Recessive Lethal Haplotypes In Irish Sheep Populations, Rory Mcauley
The Detection Of Putative Recessive Lethal Haplotypes In Irish Sheep Populations, Rory Mcauley
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
In livestock populations, recessive lethal alleles are a known contributor to poor reproductive performance due to embryonic death in homozygous individuals. Despite their lethal effect in the recessive form, these alleles may be maintained at high frequencies among carrier animals because of their positive pleiotropic effects on economically important traits. Although several such recessive alleles have been identified in cattle and pig populations, limited studies have been completed in sheep, and none within Irish sheep populations. Genotype data for 69,034 animals from five major Irish sheep breeds genotyped on a variety of panels was available for this study. Only animals …
Genetic Evaluation Of Enteric Methane For Sustainable Irish Beef Cattle, Clodagh Ryan
Genetic Evaluation Of Enteric Methane For Sustainable Irish Beef Cattle, Clodagh Ryan
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background:
Globally, livestock agriculture significantly contributes to human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through methane production. A potential approach to effectively, durably, and progressively reduce enteric methane emissions at a reasonable cost is through animal breeding.
Methods:
Individual animal methane records were available from 1,508 multi-breed growing beef cattle using GreenFeed Emission Monitoring systems. The objective of this study was to derive genetic parameters for a series of definitions of enteric methane, carbon dioxide, and dry matter intake (DMI). Estimated breeding values (EBVs) were generated for nine alternative definitions of enteric methane and EBVs were validated against phenotypic performance (adjusted for …

Participation, Commitment, And Loyalty Towards Youth Tennis: Player And Parent Perceptions, Jill Fjelstul, Asli Tasci, Alan Fyall, Karl Davies
Journal of Tourism Insights
Sports, in general and tennis specifically, offer diverse benefits for youth in social, physical, psychological, and mental dimensions. These benefits are known to influence commitment and loyalty towards sports. Nonetheless, the influence of perceived benefits on youth commitments and loyalty to tennis has been a void in the literature. Assuming the parental influence on youth participation in sport in general and in tennis specifically, this study measured and compared the youth tennis players’ and their parents’ perceived benefits of tennis. The study depicted physical well-being, life skills, and fun as the highly-rated perceived benefits by both players and parents/guardians. Life …

Perception Of Islanders Towards Promotion Of Island Tourism In The State Of Goa - An Empirical Study, Antony R. Benadict Prof., Gail Bina Pires Ms
Journal of Tourism Insights
"Island Tourism" refers to the phenomenon of the development of tourism on an island that advances the establishment of family guesthouses, corporate hotels, and other related commercial areas, as well as an integration of the island's scenic spots and urban developments, which in turn can influence the island's local population growth, environmental improvement, completion of facilities, and functional upgrading (Jun Yung, 2016) It's not just the beaches that make Goa an absolute paradise, there are a few Islands in complete isolation that offers some much-needed solace away from all the humdrum from the beaches. Island tourism in Goa is one …

Intraspecific Variation Of Morphological Traits Backed Up With Molecular Evidence Votes For Re‑Appraisal Of Hitherto Distinguished Balaustium Species—A Case Study Of Balaustium Murorum (Acariformes: Parasitengona, Erythraeidae), Joanna Mąkol, Magdalena Felska
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Molecular examination of representatives of Balaustium from several populations in SW Poland, performed using the sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, confirmed their common specific affiliation and identity with Balaustium murorum. The potential presence of distinct species in the studied material, preliminarily inferred from the discovery of clusters as a result of Principal Component Analysis exploring the metric data sets, was rejected due to the finding of only one haplotype, at intra- and inter-population sampling. An insight into meristic traits in larvae, focused on chaetotaxy of legs, revealed wider variation than hitherto recognized for the …

With the success of U-Net or its variants in automatic medical image segmentation, building a fully convolutional network (FCN) based on an encoder-decoder structure has become an effective end-to-end learning approach. However, the intrinsic property of FCNs is that as the encoder deepens, higher-level features are learned, and the receptive field size of the network increases, which results in unsatisfactory performance for detecting low-level small/thin structures such as atrial walls and small arteries. To address this issue, we propose to keep the different encoding layer features at their original sizes to constrain the receptive field from increasing as the network …

Research Outreach Interdisciplinary Activity To Classify Olive Oil Blends Integrating Multicolor Imaging, Image Processing, And Machine Learning, Allan Abraham, Kameshwaran Balachandran
Undergraduate Research (Journal)
This outreach undergraduate research project presents a low-cost method to distinguish the quality of different olive oils. The proposed method is based on an indirect measurement of the chlorophyll molecules present when a green laser diode illuminates the oil sample. Oil blends can be classified into five classes (no olive oil, light olive oil, medium olive oil, olive oil, and extra virgin olive oil) by quantifying the ratio of the red channel versus the green channel along the laser illumination path from a color image. After labeling each oil blend, a convolutional neural network has been implemented and trained to …

Doxorubicin-Induced Modulation Of Tgf-Β Signaling Cascade In Mouse Fibroblasts: Insights Into Cardiotoxicity Mechanisms, Conner Patricelli, Parker Lehmann, Julia Thom Oxford, Xinzhu Pu
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity has been widely observed, yet the specific impact on cardiac fibroblasts is not fully understood. Additionally, the modulation of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway by DOX remains to be fully elucidated. This study investigated DOX’s ability to modulate the expression of genes and proteins involved in the TGF-β signaling cascade in mouse fibroblasts from two sources by assessing the impact of DOX treatment on TGF-β inducible expression of pivotal genes and proteins within fibroblasts. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (NIH3T3) and mouse primary cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) were treated with DOX in the presence of TGF-β1 to …

Using Machine Learning To Measure Changes In Immunity Due To Climate Change In The Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda, Nathaniel T. Haulk
LSU Master's Theses
Object detection is a recent development that allows for the detection of multiple objects in photographs. Numerous machine learning algorithms have been developed for object detection. Here we sought to determine which algorithm performed best when relating to an organism's health and immunological response. The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major agricultural pest causing millions of dollars in damage to farmlands across the globe. With their recent spread into Africa and Asia, the need for understanding how best to control population outbreaks via biocontrol has increased. While viruses are a major biocontrol agent for controlling insect pests, we …

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are aggressive soft tissue sarcomas that often develop in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). To address the critical need for novel therapeutics in MPNST, we aimed to establish an ex vivo 3D platform that accurately captured the genomic diversity of MPNST and could be utilized in a medium-throughput manner for drug screening studies to be validated in vivo using patient-derived xenografts (PDX).
METHODS: Genomic analysis was performed on all PDX-tumor pairs. Selected PDX were harvested for assembly into 3D microtissues. Based on prior work in our labs, we evaluated drugs (trabectedin, olaparib, …

Paneth cells (PCs), a specialized secretory cell type in the small intestine, are increasingly recognized as having an essential role in host responses to microbiome and environmental stresses. Whether and how commensal and pathogenic microbes modify PC composition to modulate inflammation remain unclear. Using newly developed PC-reporter mice under conventional and gnotobiotic conditions, we determined PC transcriptomic heterogeneity in response to commensal and invasive microbes at single cell level. Infection expands the pool of CD74

A Highly Selective Optical Sensor Eu-Binam For Assessment Of High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin Tumor Marker In Serum Of Cancer Patients, Ekram Hany Mohamed, Mohamed S. Attia, Ahmed O. Youssef, Shahenda S. Ahmed
Pharmacy
A novel, easy, touchy and selective spectrofluorimetric technique has been successfully applied for sensitive determination of High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin (TNHS I) in the serum samples of patients suffering malignant tumors through the usage of optical sensor Eu3+-BINAM complex. The technique is primarily based on quenching of the Eu3+-BINAM complex's luminescence intensity upon introducing various concentrations of High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin (TNHS I). The synthesis and characterization of the optical sensor was performed via absorption and emission. The sensor was also adapted to offer excitation at 394 nm in acetonitrile at pH 7.5. Concentration of High Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin (TNHS …
