Attachment Issues: Microbes, Minerals, And The Persistence Of Soil Organic Matter, Md Shafiul Islam Rion Jan 2023

Attachment Issues: Microbes, Minerals, And The Persistence Of Soil Organic Matter, Md Shafiul Islam Rion

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The remnants of microorganisms are now understood to account for the majority of organic matter in many mineral soils. Despite the significance of this microbial necromass for soil carbon storage, we know relatively little about how the traits of microorganisms interact with soil minerals to determine the stability of microbe derived carbon in soil. Soil minerals differ in their surface area and chemistry potentially influencing microbial attachment, biofilm formation, and the persistence of microbial necromass. To address this knowledge gap, we grew twelve bacterial species from four broad groups of varying cell wall morphology (Gram positive, Gram negative, filamentous actinobacteria, …

Gut-Lung Axis Of The Microbiome Alterations After Ultrafine Particles And Ozone Inhalation, Md Habibul Hasan Mazumder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Air pollution poses a significant threat to public health. It is a mixture of particulate matter, gaseous substances, and other secondary substances. Despite epidemiological research indicating the interactive effects of various components of air pollution, existing studies and regulatory limits often focus on single-exposure scenarios. The emerging understanding of the microbiome’s role in regulating immune response, metabolism, and pathophysiology of various diseases points towards interactions between environmental exposures and microbial dysbiosis. In this dissertation, mice were exposed to relevant deposited doses of carbon black (CB) and ozone (O3), and lung inflammation as well as the lung-gut axis of the microbiome …

Application Of Computational Biophysics Techniques To Characterize Cell Membrane-Associated Events, Kyle Billings Jan 2023

Application Of Computational Biophysics Techniques To Characterize Cell Membrane-Associated Events, Kyle Billings

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cell membranes are crowded environments which can modulate protein structure-function relationships through interaction with lipids, other proteins, carbohydrate structures and so on. This work focuses the impact of the membrane environment on two varieties of peptides: Microbial rhodopsin proteins, and cyclic peptides.

Life on Earth is dependent on the ability of plants and microbes to harness sunlight for energy production. Their ability to transform light into carbohydrates requires tailor-made machinery, and for a wealth of microorganisms, microbial rhodopsin proteins (MR) are critical for maintaining the concentration gradients used to produce the energy molecule Adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The central retinal molecule …

Evaluation Of A Novel Mrna-Pertussis Vaccine Against Emerging Clinical Isolates Of Bordetella Pertussis, Graham Jeffrey Bitzer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative obligate aerobe that causes a respiratory disease known as pertussis or whooping cough. Pertussis is most severe in younger children, especially infants but the bacteria has been known to colonize adult populations. Before the introduction of the whole-cell pertussis (wP; wP-DTP) vaccine reported numbers of pertussis cases within the US routinely topped 100,000 cases per year. However, with the widespread usage of the wP vaccine case numbers began dropping and reached a low of less than 5,000 cases per year in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. It appeared that B. pertussis was heading towards …

Social Determinants Of Health And Functional Disability At Mid- And Late-Life, Carly Pullen Jan 2023

Social Determinants Of Health And Functional Disability At Mid- And Late-Life, Carly Pullen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The number and proportion of older adults living in the U.S. and globally are increasing. Not only are more adults living longer (Rania et al., 2021), there is evidence that people are

entering late life with more functional disability than in previous generations (He & Larsen,

2014). Social determinants of health include demographic and environmental influences than can impact a range of health outcomes beyond more direct risk factors (Duran and Perez-Stable, 2019). Using data from 243,693 community-dwelling adults who completed the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, we tested the associations among social determinants of health (i.e., age, …

Material Characterization Of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (Tpu) And Thermoplastic Elastomers (Tpe) For Development Of 3d-Printed Surrogate Organs For Medical Training, Anastasia Elizabeth Lucci

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cadaveric specimens are a necessary, albeit limited, resource for training medical students on basic surgical skills. The availability of surrogate 3D-printed organs would readily allow access to resources that could reduce or potentially eliminate the need for cadaveric specimens or, at a minimum, provide students the opportunity to practice with 3D-printed surrogates before transitioning to those specimens. This research focuses on determining which thermoplastic material most closely mimics mechanical properties such as hardness and stiffness of human organs and allows 3D printing surrogate organs to be used as safe, educational tools. Relatively “soft” materials such as thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and …

You've Got A Friend: Social Factors And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults, Erika A. Fenstermacher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression in late life has been associated with disability, lower quality of life, increased mortality, and increased risk of suicide (Fiske et al., 2009; Rodda et al., 2011). Research suggests that functional disability, which is often brought about by a medical condition, may precede depressive symptoms and may be a major factor for older adults developing depression (Ormel et al., 2002). Social support can be beneficial for both emotional and physical health (Fiori & Jager, 2021). Numerous studies found evidence that social networks, perceived and subjective social support, and satisfaction with support received moderated the relation between health problems and …

Impacts Of Diverse Inflammatory Stimuli On Neutrophil Behavior: Extracellular Vesicles, E-Cigarettes, And Nanoparticles, Hunter T. Snoderly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Neutrophils are the body’s front-line defenders against foreign insult and are key players in a variety of inflammatory conditions. This body of work examines the role of neutrophils in promoting pathology in three distinct inflammatory contexts. In the pro-inflammatory state provoked by breast cancer, neutrophils decondense their nuclei and release cytotoxic web-like structures known as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). NETs form most commonly via histone modifications facilitated by the enzyme PAD4. NETs are known to be a harbinger of disease progression and promote metastasis through capture of circulating tumor cells. It was hypothesized that breast tumors release small particles known …

The Effects Of E-Cigarette Aerosol On The Force Degradation Of Elastomeric Chain: An In Vitro Pilot Study, Nicholas David Palmer Jan 2023

The Effects Of E-Cigarette Aerosol On The Force Degradation Of Elastomeric Chain: An In Vitro Pilot Study, Nicholas David Palmer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background and Objectives

An ideal orthodontic force system should exert continuous light force. An orthodontist has the option to utilize different systems for closing orthodontic extraction space. A commonly used method when closing extraction space is to utilize orthodontic elastomeric chain. Energy Chain® (Rocky Mountain Orthodontics, Franklin, IN) allows for less deformation of shape following the initial stretch, more consistent force, and less force degradation over time. The mouth is a harsh environment that experiences daily changes in pH and temperature. These changes cause elastomeric chain to experience increased force degradation. The creation of the JUUL® (JUUL Labs, San Francisco, …

Assessing Forest Features And Nocturnal Flying Insect Diversity As Predictors Of Eastern Whip-Poor-Will Occupancy In Foraging Habitat, Clark D. Alexander

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus), an insectivorous caprimulgid, have seen an approximate 2.76% annual population decrease since the 1960s, with their breeding and foraging ecology largely unknown due to their nocturnal and cryptic behavior. I conducted research to assess abiotic and biotic variables correlated with detection, and occupancy probability, and prey species diversity on ~104,000 hectares of forest in West Virginia, owned by the private timber company Weyerhaeuser. Previous literature indicates that Eastern whip-poor-will, and their prey, require ephemeral habitat such as recently cleared and early successional forests, like those historically created by forest fires, wind shears, hurricanes, and …

Influence Of Maternal Nano-Titanium Dioxide Inhalation Exposure On Cyclooxygenase Metabolites: Maternal Microvascular And Sexually Dimorphic Feto-Placental Outcomes., Julie Anne Griffith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) is an engineered nanomaterial (ENM), which is widely utilized in diverse products like surface coatings, cosmetics, medical devices, and filters. Inhaled nano-TiO2 has been demonstrated to induce pulmonary inflammation, impair microvascular function, and hinder generational reproductive endpoints. These outcomes indicate why it is important to explore gestation, as it requires timely vascular adaptations to support maternal and fetal health and development. Therefore, the central hypothesis of my dissertation is: maternal nano-TiO2 inhalation exposure will impact maternal microvascular function and fetoplacental hemodynamics and function in a sexually dimorphic manner.

The first purpose of …

The Economics Of Pollution: Policy, Productivity, And The Structure Of Road Networks, Michael Cary Jan 2023

The Economics Of Pollution: Policy, Productivity, And The Structure Of Road Networks, Michael Cary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Air pollution impacts economic activity, and economic activity creates air pollution. Understanding this endogenous nexus is critical as any policy designed to affect one will inevitably affect the other. My research explores both sides of this nexus. Specifically, I identify the economic effects from the implementation of an international climate agreement (the Kyoto Protocol); I determine the impact of air pollution on physical productivity and determine which pollutants are responsible for this effect; and I link urban form to vehicular emissions via the structure of road networks.

The first chapter of this dissertation studies the impact of the Kyoto Protocol …

Understanding The Relationship Between Landscape Characteristics And Public Preferences: A Case Study In A Proposed Appalachian Geopark Project In Southern West Virginia, United States, Ganga Nakarmi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the relationship between landscape characters and public preferences in the proposed Appalachian Geopark (pAGP) in southern West Virginia, United States (U.S.). This region was well-known for industrial activities such as coal mining logging and railways during the 1800s. With the diminishing industrial activities, the region was left behind with degraded environmental factors including landscapes and an economically challenged society. Because of these conditions, there is a need to develop this region without further damaging the lands and implement proper land management policies and practices. Understanding characteristics of those lands from the past …

Ambient Ammonia Synthesis Via Microwave-Catalytic Materials And Plasma Chemistry, Siobhan Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ammonia is critical to supporting human life on earth because of its use as fertilizer. The Haber-Bosch process to produce ammonia has been practiced for over 100 years. This process operates at high pressure and temperature to overcome the thermodynamic and kinetic limitations of the ammonia synthesis reaction thus researchers have tried to overcome it for decades. At present this process represents 1% of global energy usage and 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. The proposed chemical looping ammonia synthesis approach seeks to reduce the environmental impact of this critical process and to elucidate microwave-catalytic principles.

This research aims to …

Epistemological Insecurity In The Anthropocene, Dustin Purvis Jan 2023

Epistemological Insecurity In The Anthropocene, Dustin Purvis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation analyzes how increased mainstream awareness of climate change and other complex environmental phenomena transforms some of the basic tools we use to understand the world, including notions of agency, evidence, and causality. More specifically, this project highlights numerous contemporary literary and cultural narratives that formally and thematically depict impromptu systems of action and comprehension developed by humans confronting the unique forms of information overload that result from damaged and rapidly changing environments. Following critics like Ulrich Beck, Rob Nixon, and Stacy Alaimo, I suggest our current era of ecological instability and destructive environmental practices dictate what I refer …

The production of maple syrup is a valuable source of income and cultural identity for many rural communities throughout the central Appalachian region. Regardless, maple syrup producers face difficulties maintaining the health and productivity
of their stands due to various impacts of climate change, which have given rise to extreme weather events that exacerbate damage caused by pests and diseases. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the maple syrup industry, it is crucial to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the current biotic threats within the region, particularly woodboring insects and fungal pathogens. However, insufficient information exists regarding the community assemblages …

Experiences Of Transgender Adults Living In West Virginia, Kerry M. Drabish Jan 2023

Experiences Of Transgender Adults Living In West Virginia, Kerry M. Drabish

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background: Transgender adults experience disrespect, rejection, and discrimination. This is further complicated by the incongruence and internal conflict stemming from pressure to conform to a binary system of gender. Studies describing the experiences of transgender adults are limited. Therefore, the concept coexisting between the assigned and identified self was developed to better understand how transgender adults acknowledge turmoil and marginalization in coming to embrace identity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) describe the experiences of transgender adults living in WV, and (2) gather empirical evidence about the concept coexisting between the assigned and identified self. The …

Investigation Of Early Complex Formation Of Huntingtin Protein With And Without Lipids, Alyssa R. Stonebraker Jan 2023

Investigation Of Early Complex Formation Of Huntingtin Protein With And Without Lipids, Alyssa R. Stonebraker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion of the polyglutamine (polyQ) domain of the huntingtin protein (htt). The expansion of the polyQ domain beyond a threshold of approximately 35 repeats triggers complex toxic aggregation mechanisms and results in altered interactions between htt and lipid membranes. Many factors modulate these processes. One such modulator includes sequences flanking the polyQ domain, most notably the first 17 amino acids at the N-terminus of the protein (Nt17), and environmental factors including the presence of membranous structures. Nt17 has the propensity to form an amphipathic a-helix in the presence of …

Governance From Below: Decentralization, Innovation, And Disaster Management In East Asia, Fatemah Muneer Nawabdin Jan 2023

Governance From Below: Decentralization, Innovation, And Disaster Management In East Asia, Fatemah Muneer Nawabdin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research on decentralization has emphasized that the distribution of power between the national and local levels has different effects on various outcomes. This dissertation aims to contribute to this discussion by shedding light on the three types of decentralization (political, fiscal, and administrative) and their effect on two main outcomes: the production of technological and intellectual innovation and COVID-19 management. I argue that decentralization – including its three types – works differently under different conditions, resulting in different outcomes. That is, fiscal and administrative decentralization empower local decision-makers to make autonomous decisions, which can be beneficial for promoting innovation, but …

The Enigmatic Nature Of Toxic Masculinity: Utilizing Quasi-Photovoice Methodology To Make Distinctions Between Hegemonic And Toxic Masculinity, Taylor Elizabeth Remsburg Jan 2023

The Enigmatic Nature Of Toxic Masculinity: Utilizing Quasi-Photovoice Methodology To Make Distinctions Between Hegemonic And Toxic Masculinity, Taylor Elizabeth Remsburg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies of masculinity are fraught by inconsistent and unclear definitions. A comparison of literature which uses either hegemonic or toxic masculinity as a framework reveals that toxic masculinity can be virtually indistinguishable from hegemonic masculinity. I posit that toxic masculinity is and should be distinct from hegemonic masculinity. Failure to distinguish toxic masculinity from hegemonic masculinity makes toxicity difficult, if not impossible, to operationalize. I designed a vignette survey to clarify the conceptualization and operationalization of toxic masculinity. My vignette survey, which asks participants to respond to prompts regarding both toxic masculinity and masculinity, uses quasi-photovoice methodology to allow participants …
