Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this research, we have developed a colorimetric paper-based sensing platform for the determination of mercury ion (Hg2+) using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). To evaluate the selectivity in the response to a special target, urea is used as recognizing ligands on AuNPs for selective sensing Hg2+. Colorimetric readings in the presence of various environmentally relevant metal ions, such as Na+, K+, Zn2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+, were also studied. The results show that amongst all the tested metal ions, the SPR peaks are located at 525 nm except in the case of the present of Hg2+, in which is red shifted to …

Effect Of Annealing Temperature On The Tio Anodized Films Properties For Dental Implant Application, Phanawan Whangdee, Wittawat Saenrang, Nampueng Pangpaiboon, Pristanuch Masakul, Dujreutai Pongkao Kashima
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The TiO2 anodized films generated at low current density after annealing are good candidates for surface coating, as a hydrophilicity is a crucial characteristic that determines dental implant applications. In this study, the hydrophilicity of TiO2 anodized films annealed at various temperatures was examined. It was found that increasing the annealing temperature during the anodization procedure improves the hydrophilicity of the TiO2 anodized films. This is related to the evolution of the TiO2 anodized film structure produced by raising the annealing temperature, which converts the TiO2 anodized amorphous phase to rutile phases. Moreover, increased annealing temperature results in more oxygen …

Herein, carbon dots (CDs) as biocompatible, fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterials were synthesized from papaya seed waste as renewable carbon sources for the first time via a facile acid pyrolysis method. The papaya seed-derived CDs showed blue fluorescence emission under UV light (365 nm) with a quantum yield of 2.74%, and contained oxygen-, and nitrogen- containing functional groups. Due to their surface functionality, the CDs have a great potential for using as fluorescence sensing probe in metal ion sensing application. The CD solution exhibited the most selective detection to Cu2+ as presented the highest fluorescence quenching with the limit of detection (LOD) …

Glutinous rice husk, an abundant agricultural biowaste in Thailand, was pretreated with high energy electron beam irradiation (EBI) at doses of 500 kGy, 1000 kGy, and 1500 kGy prior to fabrication into biochar by carbonization at 500℃ under nitrogen atmosphere. The biochar was then treated with KOH and subsequently heated at 800℃, yielding activated carbon (GAC). The physical, chemical, and electrochemical properties of the as-received biochar (GB) and activated carbon (GAC) were investigated. Scanning electron microscopic images (SEM) suggested that biochar irradiated with 1500 kGy (GB-1500) has the highest porosity compared to the other samples. The electrochemical properties of GB …

This review paper covers the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and nanodiamond-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites and correlates them with the topographical features, morphology, weight fraction, dispersion state, and surface functionalization of CNTs, …
Towards Establishing A Fit-For-Purpose Regulatory Framework For Radiation Protection In Western Australia's Mining Industry: Evaluating Mine Worker Exposures To Naturally Occurring Radionuclides, Martin I. Ralph
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and “critical minerals” required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earths-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements.
WA’s mineral …

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Referrals are an important and underacknowledged component of ethical clinical practice. While clinical care is understandably the core focus for most organizations, effective and efficient referrals can aide in improving client outcomes through successful connections to services, effective use of conjunctive services, and increased trust in mental health and healthcare systems/providers. In addition, improvements in the referral process can serve to decrease undue burden on providers and organizations. This document aims to review the literature on the need for and use of referrals, as well as elements of successful referrals, to inform the development of a referral self-assessment and flow …

Affirming Care: Lessons From Minority Stress Model To Bolster Mental Health Outcomes For Lgbtq+ Youth In Primary Care, Kyrie Lampert
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Individuals in positions of power influence youth wellbeing, self-perception, and overall mental health. According to the minority stress model, individuals who hold marginalized identities, such as LGBTQ+ youth, face unique, chronic, and socially based additive stressors. Research shows that these additive stressors contribute to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing disproportionate rates of mental health concerns. Queer youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their non-queer identifying peers. Additive stressors that LGBTQ+ youth face include prejudiced events, stigma, decisions of concealment or disclosure, and internalized homophobia and transphobia. This paper will review and integrate research, utilizing the minority …
Paternal Perinatal Psychopathology And Stigma Related To Nicu Admission, Hudson Holland Jones
Paternal Perinatal Psychopathology And Stigma Related To Nicu Admission, Hudson Holland Jones
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Stigma or the belief that mental health difficulties stem from a personal weakness, moral failing, or poor choices and will subject one to shame, embarrassment, scrutiny, victimization, oppression, and ostracization is a reason people choose to avoid, not to obtain or fully engage in mental health treatments despite their demonstrated effectiveness (Corrigan, 2004;Vogel et al., 2006). Gender differences have been found in experiences of stigma; for example, men were found to self-stigmatize to justify avoiding counseling to a greater degree than women (Judd et al., 2008). As such, stigma has been identified as a gender-salient variable that serves as a …

Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy: Equity Through Contextual Frameworks, Emanuel Hermosillo
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Psychedelic assisted psychotherapy (PAP) is a psychotherapeutic modality in which the non-ordinary states of consciousness that result from the consumption of psychedelic medicines are utilized to facilitate therapeutic healing. A wide range of cultures have used a variety of these psychotropic substances as medicines since ancient times, and there has been a resurgence of interest in their beneficial properties across many disciplines including psychology. Given that there are extra dimensions of vulnerability in using these medicines therapeutically, increased attention needs to be given to diversity, equity, and inclusion across psychedelic research and clinical practices. This paper focuses on how internal …

Unlocking The Beauty From Within Title Vii: Arguing For An Expansive Interpretation Of Title Vii To Protect Against Attractiveness Discrimination, Michael Conklin
American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
Beauty may only be skin deep, but discrimination against the unattractive runs far deeper. Research emphatically demonstrates that attractiveness discrimination affects nearly every aspect of life, including hiring and promotion decisions. For example, personal injury attorneys utilize economists as expert witnesses for how their clients’ reduced attractiveness will negatively affect their future earnings. Attractiveness discrimination is just as prevalent as discrimination based on ethnicity. Unfortunately, current interpretations of federal antidiscrimination legislation do not offer protections from attractiveness discrimination. This Article offers a comprehensive framework for providing such protections under an expansive interpretation of Title VII.

In May 2010, Chastity Jones sought employment as a customer service representative at Catastrophe Management Solutions (“CMS”), a claims processing company located in Mobile, Alabama. When asked for an inperson interview, Jones, a Black woman, arrived in a suit and her hair in “short dreadlocks,” or locs, a type of natural hairstyle common in the Black community. Despite being qualified for the position, Jones would later have her offer rescinded because of her hair. CMS claimed that locs “tend to get messy” and violated the “neutral” dress code and hair policy requiring employees to be “professional and business-like.” Therefore, CMS …

Principle Originalism--The Third Way: A Jurisprudential Response To Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Ryan Fortson
American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
All judges attempt to decide cases for reasons other than politics or their own personal opinions. But finding a consistent judicial methodology is fraught with peril. Against what it sees as the hyper-textualism of strict constructionism and the unfettered discretion of living constitutionalism, originalism posits itself as the only viable way to achieve an objectively neutral interpretation of the law. This is certainly the stance taken by the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which claims that the Constitution is silent on abortion and that therefore no corresponding right to abortion exists. But there can be different …

Wade led to thirteen states enacting abortion trigger laws.
Structural Impact Of Epstein-Barr Virus- Encoded Small Rna -1 On Its Transport And Function, Zubaida Hassan
Structural Impact Of Epstein-Barr Virus- Encoded Small Rna -1 On Its Transport And Function, Zubaida Hassan
Dissertations
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Encoded RNAs (EBERs) are two small, noncoding, structurally conserved transcripts that are expressed in millions of copies in all stages of EBV infection. Despite their abundant expression, the role of EBERs in EBV biology or pathogenesis is not well defined. However, they are associated with driving cell proliferation and improving intercellular communication via their secretion in exosomes. In spite of the pathogenic potentials of EBERs, the mechanisms involved in their transport and function remain to be elucidated. The aim of this PhD dissertation was to investigate the structural impact of EBER1 in its transport and function. The conserved …

Measuring The Production Of Migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout In Tributaries To Priest River, Idaho, Collin J. Hendricks
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Iteroparous salmonids that exhibit a migratory life history are essential to functioning metapopulations. They are demographically important as migratory females produce more eggs than non-migratory individuals. Additionally, they provide genetic support through gene flow, resulting in more robust, genetically diverse populations. The lower Priest River flows into the Pend Oreille River in the panhandle of northern Idaho and is a system susceptible to degrading conditions due to increasing water temperature. It is also, a significant contributor of migratory Westslope Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi (WCT) in the Clark- Fork Pend Oreille Basin (CFPOR). The goal of our study was to …

Baseline Data For Assessing Beaver Dam Analogs As A Restoration Tool In Fire-Affected Tributaries Of The Methow And Okanogan Watersheds, Katelin Killoy
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Incised streams are disconnected from their floodplains and no longer store water effectively. This leads to diminished ecosystem function, loss of critical riparian and aquatic habitats, and reduced biodiversity. Beaver dams improve incised streams by raising surface and groundwater levels, leading to reconnected floodplains. When beaver establishment is not feasible, Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) may be used to mitigate damage from stream incision and facilitate beaver establishment. However, it is unclear how effective BDAs are at mimicking natural beaver dams, especially on streams affected by high-intensity wildfires. The objective of my research is to collect baseline data needed to assess …

Ongoing global protests against police violence and racism were heightened in 2020 after the deaths of Breana Taylor and George Floyd, whose deaths made headlines worldwide and raised awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement, which targets structural racism and violence against Black people in the USA and abroad. There are many documented links between policing and health-related outcomes, including but not limited to fatal injuries that increase population-specific mortality rates, adverse physiological responses that increase morbidity, psychological stress, arrests, incarcerations, and legal, medical, and funeral bills that cause socioeconomic deprivation, poor school performance, incomplete high-school education and not entering …
Child Development And The Family Regulation System, Clare Huntington
Child Development And The Family Regulation System, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
Child abuse and neglect clearly harm children, but the risks that accompany involvement with the family regulation system (also known as the child welfare system), especially placement in foster care, also present considerable risks to child development. This chapter describes these competing risks to child development, the legal framework governing the family regulation system, and scholarly debates in the field. It then analyzes the system in the broader context of the legal regulation of children, showing that the family regulation system is out of step with other areas and in need of significant reform. A core problem with the system …
The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler
The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler
Research Papers
The current research seeks to evaluate current juvenile rehabilitative approaches and analyze their effectiveness in reducing juvenile offending behaviors. The juvenile justice system is analyzed from a historical perspective beginning prior to the establishment of the juvenile justice system in the 19th century and leading to the current approaches of the 21st century. Developmental research has found that most juveniles will desist from delinquency on their own by naturally growing out of their offending behavior. However, when juveniles become involved in the justice system the opportunity to age out of offending behavior is limited. Recognizing this, the juvenile …

Adopting A Growth Mindset Approach To Interventions For Self-Regulation, Kelly A. Larson
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Research continues to demonstrate self-regulation’s significance in almost all aspects of life, including but not limited to academic success and school adjustment. Incorporating a growth mindset into self-regulation may be a potential missing motivational component in school-based interventions. This pilot study assessed trends in survey results of whether a group of high school students who receive special education with noted difficulties in emotional regulation, organization, and consistent/timely work completion. The survey assessed whether they held a more fixed or growth mindset of self-regulation prior to intervention and whether those students' mindset of self-regulation moved towards a growth mindset of self-regulation …

We present novoRNABreak, a unified framework for cancer specific novel splice junction and fusion transcript detection in RNA-seq data obtained from human cancer samples. novoRNABreak is based on a local assembly model, which offers a tradeoff between the alignment-based and de novo whole transcriptome assembly (WTA) methods. This approach is accurate and sensitive in assembling novel junctions that are difficult to directly align or have multiple alignments. Additionally, it is more efficient due to the strategy that focuses on junctions rather than full length transcripts. The performance of novoRNABreak is demonstrated by a comprehensive set of experiments using synthetic data …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
T-follicular helper (TFH) cells are one of the T-cell subsets with a critical role in the regulation of germinal center (GC) reactions. TFH cells contribute to the positive selection of GC B-cells and promote plasma cell differentiation and antibody production. TFH cells express a unique phenotype characterized by PD-1hi, ICOShi, CD40Lhi, CD95hi, CTLAhi, CCR7lo, and CXCR5hi . Three main subtypes of nodal TFH lymphomas have been described: 1) angioimmunoblastic-type, 2) follicular-type, and 3) not otherwise specified (NOS). The diagnosis of these neoplasms can be challenging, and it is rendered based on a combination of clinical, laboratory, histopathologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular …

Chemical probes are invaluable tools for investigating essential biological processes. Understanding how small-molecule probes engage biomolecular conformations is critical to developing their functional selectivity. High-throughput solution X-ray scattering is well-positioned to profile target-ligand complexes during probe development, bringing conformational insight and selection to traditional ligand binding assays. Access to high-quality synchrotron SAXS datasets and high-throughput data analysis now allows routine academic users to incorporate conformational information into small-molecule development pipelines. Here we describe a general approach for benchmarking and preparing HT-SAXS chemical screens from small fragment libraries. Using the allosteric oxidoreductase Apoptosis-Inducing Factor (AIF) as an exemplary system, we illustrate …

Pancreatitis is currently the leading cause of gastrointestinal hospitalizations in the US. This condition occurs in response to abdominal injury, gallstones, chronic alcohol consumption or, less frequently, the cause remains idiopathic. CD73 is a cell surface ecto‐5′‐nucleotidase that generates extracellular adenosine, which can contribute to resolution of inflammation by binding adenosine receptors on infiltrating immune cells. We hypothesized genetic deletion of CD73 would result in more severe pancreatitis due to decreased generation of extracellular adenosine. CD73 knockout (CD73 −/−) and C57BL/6 (wild type, WT) mice were used to evaluate the progression and response of caerulein‐induced acute and chronic pancreatitis. …
