Inventory Management In Supply Chains With Consideration Of Transportation And Green Technology Cost Under Progressive Carbon Taxation, Ming-Feng Yang, Min-Der Ko, Hung-Jen Tu, Mengru Tu, Jun-Yuan Kuo, Yen-Ting Chao, Shang-Wei Shih
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Reducing carbon emissions is an important issue in the global supply chain. Governments have formulated different carbon policies to achieve carbon neutrality or emission reduction, in particular, the carbon tax as a policy provides greater certainty about the potential cost to emitters. The Taiwan government is expected to implement the carbon tax policy in 2024 and does not rule out the inclusion of a progressive mechanism which is more effective than a single carbon tax in curbing high carbon emissions Recent studies have also confirmed that a high level and complete carbon tax could encourage companies to invest in green …

Geohash-Based Arrangement Of Live-Fire Exercise Areas Using Ais, Sang-Lok Yoo, Cho-Young Jung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Live-fire exercise (LFX) areas at sea threaten the safety of ships, whereas, and indiscriminately abandoned unexploded bombs threaten the lives of fishermen. No statistical or scientific research has been conducted on the appropriate locations for LFX areas. Therefore, this study proposes a method for effectively arranging the LFX areas at sea that considers the safety of passing ships and national security. First, the proposed method classifies ship tracking data collected in the daytime based on the dawn and dusk times of the civil twilight phase. Second, the method uses a Geohash geocoding process to identify whether an LFX area coincides …

Research On Risk Assessment Of Container Operation Process In Ports Considering Functional Areas, Chen-Yu Lin, Ming-Jiu Hwang, Tzu-Heng Yen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The risk management of container ports has drawn significant attention recently in part because of recent high-profile accidents in global container ports and in part due to the increasing focus on port safety as a key element in sustainable maritime transportation. This research presented a novel, two-layer container port risk assessment model by partitioning the container port into four areas based on the process of container transportation: loading and unloading, in-port container transportation, storage, and gate areas. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and quantitative risk analysis modeling were combined for each part of the process to evaluate the risk …

Artificial Intelligence In Prediction Of The Remaining Useful Life Of Wind Turbine Shaft Bearings, Jinsiang Shaw, B.J. Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Long-term periodic rotation and unstable load changes in wind turbines can cause unexpected damage to high-speed shaft bearings (HSSBs). In this study, after preprocessing of the HSSB vibration signal, four different models for predicting bearing degradation in terms of remaining useful life (RUL) in days were investigated: support vector regression (SVR), convolutional neural networks (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and CNN-LSTM. The experimental results revealed that the CNN achieved the best mean absolute error (MAE), at 0.44 days, based on frequency response plot using the fast Fourier transform (FFT), while that of the CNN-LSTM model predicted using the amplitude profile …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
During the migration of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) towards the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan, the convergence of coastal currents results in the formation of intricate water temperature structures. However, the impact of this phenomenon on the behavioral tendencies of chum salmon remains largely unexplored. In 2012 and 2013, we conducted a study to document the vertical water temperature profiles and uninterrupted swimming patterns of homing chum salmon in the coastal waters surrounding the Shiretoko Peninsula. The results indicated that chum salmon exhibited a preference for avoiding thermoclines characterized by rapidly decreasing water temperatures. They were predominantly observed swimming either …

Research On The Collision Risk Of Ships Off Keelung Based On Ais Data, Shih-Tzung Chen, Ming-Feng Yang, Sheng-Long Kao, Mengru Tu, Jun-Yuan Kuo, Yen-Ting Chao, Huang-Kai Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In previous literature, several computational methods have been proposed to analyze collision risks for vessels navigating at sea, most of which rely on the calculation of DCPA and TCPA between two vessels. However, this study adopts an enhanced version of the Vessel Conflict Ranking Operator (VCRO) to assess vessel collision risks. This approach not only considers the relative distance and relative velocity between two vessels but also takes their relative aspect into account. This methodology was applied to real-world vessels’ dynamic data collected through AIS. From a near-collision perspective, it identifies high-risk areas near Keelung water where commercial vessels and …

Effects Of Perpetrator And Victim Gender, Rape Myths, And Report Timing On Blame Attributions Following Sexual Assault, Katherine E. Kennon
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Previous research examined the effects of victim gender, perpetrator gender, and rape myth acceptance on victim blaming attribution; however, fewer studies explore victim and perpetrator gender at the same time, and even fewer studies examined the relevance of factors like timing of reporting (immediate or delayed) or rurality. The primary purpose of the study, therefore, was to explore the effect of victim gender, perpetrator gender, and report timing (same day vs. six months later) on victim blaming attributions. The study also examined the role of rape myth acceptance on victim blame and compared levels of rape myth acceptance across participant …

Training Specificity And Functional Performance In Collegiate Cheerleaders, Carly Routman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Competitive collegiate cheerleading requires participants to be conditioned for explosive powerful movements. Studies have shown cheerleading is associated with a high incidence of catastrophic injury (Mueller, 2009; Boden, 2005; Xu et al., 2021). In response to high injury rates, studies have recommended strength and conditioning requirements to decrease the likelihood of injury due to the lack of cheer-specific training (Jacobson et al., 2004). Although it has been recommended for cheerleaders to receive formal strength training, many schools do not provide these resources to their cheerleading teams. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Metalation of the N-terminal Amino Terminal Cu(II)- and Ni(II)-binding (ATCUN) motif may enhance the antimicrobial properties of piscidins. Molecular dynamics simulations of free and nickelated piscidins 1 and 3 (P1 and P3) were performed in 3 : 1 POPC/POPG and 2.6 : 1 : 0.4 POPC/POPG/aldo-PC bilayers (POPC, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine: POPG, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol; aldo-PC, 1-palmitoyl-2-(9′-oxo-nonanoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) bilayer models. Nickel(II) binding decreases the conformation dynamics of the ATCUN motif and lowers the charge of the N-terminus to allow it to embed deeper in the bilayer without significantly changing the overall depth due to interactions of the charged half-helix …
Phosphate And Borophosphate Glasses For Optical And Biomedical Applications, Parker Tracy Freudenberger
Phosphate And Borophosphate Glasses For Optical And Biomedical Applications, Parker Tracy Freudenberger
Doctoral Dissertations
"The goal of this work was to connect the network structures of phosphate and borophosphate glasses to the compositional dependence of properties related to biomedical applications. The glasses were characterized by a variety of techniques, including phosphate ion chromatography, Raman spectroscopy, and 11B and 31P Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, which provide qualitative and quantitative information about the phosphate and borate moieties that constitute the network structures. The systematic addition of borate to a phosphate glass initially creates tetrahedral borate sites that replace P-O-P linkages with B-O-P linkages, and the properties of the resulting borophosphate glasses …
Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan
Advances In Differentially Methylated Region Detection And Cure Survival Models, Daniel Ahmed Alhassan
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation focuses on two areas of statistics: DNA methylation and survival analysis. The first part of the dissertation pertains to the detection of differentially methylated regions in the human genome. The varying distribution of gaps between succeeding genomic locations, which are represented on the microarray used to quantify methylation, makes it challenging to identify regions that have differential methylation. This emphasizes the need to properly account for the correlation in methylation shared by nearby locations within a specific genomic distance. In this work, a normalized kernel-weighted statistic is proposed to obtain an optimal amount of "information" from neighboring locations …

Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara
Doctoral Dissertations
"The volatility of asset returns is usually time-varying, necessitating the introduction of models with a conditional heteroskedastic variance structure. In this dissertation, several existing formulations, motivated by the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) type models, are further generalized to accommodate more dynamic features of asset returns such as asymmetry, long memory, and structural breaks. First, we introduce a hybrid structure that combines short-memory asymmetric Glosten, Jagannathan, and Runkle (GJR) formulation and the long-memory fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) process for modeling financial volatility. This formulation not only can model volatility clusters and capture asymmetry but also considers the characteristic of long …
The Effect Of Face Interpretation Training On Social Anxiety Symptoms, Grace L. Wheeler
The Effect Of Face Interpretation Training On Social Anxiety Symptoms, Grace L. Wheeler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD), individuals place excessive importance on gauging others’ reactions (e.g., facial expressions) to their social performance. Facial interpretation bias modification (FIBM) was developed to shift interpretations of ambiguous faces. The current study uses FIBM to test whether face interpretation is causally related to SAD symptoms in an unselected adult sample. Participants (N=139) were randomized to 1 of 3 conditions (positive, negative, accurate) in a single-session, online study. Pre- and post- intervention measures of face interpretation and SAD were completed. In line with hypotheses, individuals in the positive condition interpreted faces more positively …

Deadly Divisions: Class And Stigma As Fundamental Social Causes Of Spatial Health Inequalities, Misty Lee Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate how class and stigma influence spatial inequalities in health across the US, from the structural to the individual level. Class, stigma, and subsequent access to capital resources are not equally distributed across the US. Women, poor, and minority populations continue to have unequal access to capital resources across the country, though this is spatially determined. Similarly, while there are health inequalities along the same social cleavages at the national level, they differ significantly across localities. Research has not paid enough attention to the fundamental social causes of inequities, resulting in the inability …
Longitudinal Oxygen Imaging In 3d (Bio)Printed Models, Ryan Curtis O'Connell
Longitudinal Oxygen Imaging In 3d (Bio)Printed Models, Ryan Curtis O'Connell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and its molecular imaging modality, is a powerful tool to noninvasively map various biological and chemical markers within objects of interest. Reliable data acquisition is a major impeding factor for longitudinal hands-off measurements. Measurements are especially challenging in biomedical applications, as live objects are not static. Frequent changes occur that require constant fine recalibration of the EPR detection system, called the resonator. To enable longitudinal imaging, a technology permitting automatic digital control of resonator coupling, tuning, and EPR data acquisition was developed. Automation was achieved through the utilization of a microcontroller and digital peripheral components such …
Blowdown Wastewater Co-Treatment With Produced Water For Resource Recovery: Moving Towards Zero Liquid Discharge And Sustainable Waste Management, Mohammad Hafez Ahmed
Blowdown Wastewater Co-Treatment With Produced Water For Resource Recovery: Moving Towards Zero Liquid Discharge And Sustainable Waste Management, Mohammad Hafez Ahmed
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cooling of low-pressure steam and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process at coal-fired powerplants often require large quantities of freshwater and can generate waste streams from the blowdown (BD) operations. Treating these wastewaters for reuse can offset the freshwater demand, which is beneficial especially in semiarid and arid regions. However, the traditional treatment (i.e., chemical softening and evaporation) of cooling BD water (BDW) is chemical- and energy-intensive and adds to the overall costs of water management for powerplants. Furthermore, the updated Effluent Limitation Guidelines and Standards for powerplants set forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) …

Are Epicuticular Waxes A Surface Defense Comparable To Trichomes? A Test Using Two Solanum Species And A Specialist Herbivore., Sakshi Watts, Rupesh R. Kariyat
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Although plants possess a suite of structural defenses, most studies have focused on trichomes. Trichomes can have both pre- and post-ingestive effects and have been consistently found to reduce herbivory. Along with trichomes, a few studies have focused on epicuticular waxes as an important defense; however, manipulated comparisons examining herbivore growth and development is limited. In this study, using two Solanum species (Solanum glaucescens and Solanum macrocarpon) that vary in both defenses, we tested the hypothesis that variation in defenses will affect herbivore feeding, primarily by restricting feeding commencement. We used electron microscopy together with a series of plant- and …

The inability of adult mammalian cardiomyocytes (CMs) to undergo cell renewal following ischemic injury stands as a major impediment to heart function recovery and contributes to heart failure (HF). Current therapeutic approaches do not offer an effective approach of reactivating CM cell division to prevent HF in humans. Recognizing this challenge, gene therapy has emerged as a promising approach to promote CM proliferation and enhance cardiac repair. A particularly notable approach is the utilization of modified mRNA (modRNA), which provides a safe, controlled, transient, non-viral, and clinically relevant means of gene delivery. The study was conducted using a novel cardiomyocyte …
