Opportunities And Challenges In Augmenting Honey Bee Forage Resources With Pasture Legumes In Southern Australia, M. Kratz, M. Brown, M. T. Newell, R. C. Hayes Jan 2023

Opportunities And Challenges In Augmenting Honey Bee Forage Resources With Pasture Legumes In Southern Australia, M. Kratz, M. Brown, M. T. Newell, R. C. Hayes

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

More than 80% of Australian honey is produced from native tree and shrub species. However, with increasing demands on public lands along with production risks posed by drought, floods and wildfires, there is a need to identify alternative forage resources to augment Australian honey production. With over 30 pasture legumes now available for agriculture in southern Australia, opportunity exists to increase the utilisation of some species with co-benefits to multiple production industries. However, there is little understanding of the potential value of most pasture legumes for honey production, and side by side comparisons are complicated by factors such as differences …

Data Curation For Modeling Tall Fescue Biomass Dynamics With Dssat-Csm, M. B. Hanson, P. D. Alderman, T. J. Butler, A. Caldeira Rocateli

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

While models for predicting forage production are available to aid management decisions for some forage crops, there is limited research for a yield model designed specifically for tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus). Therefore, our objective was to adapt an existing perennial forage model, the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer Cropping Systems Model (DSSAT-CSM) for predicting forage biomass of tall fescue in the southern Great Plains. To evaluate model performance, there must first be a high level of data manipulation and cleaning. In this project, a cohesive dataset combining biomass, weather, soil, and management data were structured into DSSAT …

Can Changing Breeding Structure Serve As A Climate Adaptation Strategy? Evidence From A Comparative Study Of China And Mongolia, Y. Zhang, Z. Huang, J. Wang, Y. Huang, T. Hao, G. Xu

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Under the influence of climate change, the vulnerability of grassland ecosystems in the Mongolian Plateau has increased. Correspondingly, herdsmen need to adopt more livelihood adaptation strategies to cope with changes in climate and grassland environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of breeding structure on grassland quality in Mongolian plateau. We select 20 border provinces/banners of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region for research, and combined statistical data with remote sensing data of 2007-2016. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is used to quantify the grassland vegetation quality. Results show that there are differences in livestock …

Mapping Genetic Variation In Arabidopsis In Response To Plant Growth-Promoting Bacterium Azoarcus Olearius Dqs-4t, Fernanda Plucani Do Amaral, Juexin Wang, Jacob Williams, Thalita R. Tuleski, Trupti Joshi, Marco A. R. Ferreira, Gary Stacey Jan 2023

Mapping Genetic Variation In Arabidopsis In Response To Plant Growth-Promoting Bacterium Azoarcus Olearius Dqs-4t, Fernanda Plucani Do Amaral, Juexin Wang, Jacob Williams, Thalita R. Tuleski, Trupti Joshi, Marco A. R. Ferreira, Gary Stacey

Biomedical Sciences

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can enhance plant health by facilitating nutrient uptake, nitrogen fixation, protection from pathogens, stress tolerance and/or boosting plant productivity. The genetic determinants that drive the plant–bacteria association remain understudied. To identify genetic loci highly correlated with traits responsive to PGPB, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using an Arabidopsis thaliana population treated with Azoarcus olearius DQS-4T. Phenotypically, the 305 Arabidopsis accessions tested responded differently to bacterial treatment by improving, inhibiting, or not affecting root system or shoot traits. GWA mapping analysis identified several predicted loci associated with primary root length or root fresh …

Accucalc: A Python Package For Accuracy Calculation In Gwas, Jana Biová, Nicholas Dietz, Yen On Chan, Trupti Joshi, Kristin Bilyeu, Mária Škrabišová

Biomedical Sciences

The genome-wide association study (GWAS) is a popular genomic approach that identifies genomic regions associated with a phenotype and, thus, aims to discover causative mutations (CM) in the genes underlying the phenotype. However, GWAS discoveries are limited by many factors and typically identify associated genomic regions without the further ability to compare the viability of candidate genes and actual CMs. Therefore, the current methodology is limited to CM identification. In our recent work, we presented a novel approach to an empowered “GWAS to Genes” strategy that we named Synthetic phenotype to causative mutation (SP2CM). We established this strategy to identify …

Identifying Potential Alzheimer’S Disease Biomarkers Beyond Amyloid-Beta And Tau, Frank Cai Jan 2023

Identifying Potential Alzheimer’S Disease Biomarkers Beyond Amyloid-Beta And Tau, Frank Cai

Master's Projects

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other forms of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) affect millions of people around the world. The buildup of Amyloid-Beta (Aβ) and Tau proteins in the brain produced by amyloid precursor protein (APP) has been identified as an important cofactor in the onset and progression of AD. However, although patients diagnosed with AD exhibit Aβ and Tau buildup, about 40% of the subjects with Aβ and Tau buildup are not diagnosed with AD. In this project, we hypothesize the involvement of other epigenetic interactions between APP and related genes in addition to the buildup of Aβ and Tau …

Pelagic-Benthic Coupling In The Gulf Of Maine: Multidecadal Molecular Isotope Records Of Zooplankton And Deep Sea Corals Bioarchives, Catherine Nowakowski

Open Access Dissertations

The export of organic matter from the surface to deep ocean has major implications for global biogeochemical cycles, the transfer of energy across food webs, and the sequestration of carbon through the biological pump. Therefore, understanding the physical and biological conditions that control these processes is important to understanding pelagic-benthic coupling and resulting controls on ocean productivity, fisheries production, and Earth’s climate regulation. Equally important is consideration of and collaboration with diverse audiences that need to understand this information to make scientifically informed decisions about climate and environment policies that come from this research. Despite the importance of this knowledge, …

Form And Function Of The Lateral Line System In Three North American Fishes: Development, Evolutionary Insights, And Impacts Of Climate Change, Aubree E. Jones

Open Access Dissertations

In addition to the sensory modalities familiar to humans (vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste), fishes have a flow-sensing system that detects local abiotic and biotic water flows called the lateral line system. The neuromast receptor organs of the lateral line system detect hydrodynamic stimuli and are located either on the skin (superficial neuromasts) or within pored, bony canals associated with the dermatocranial bones (canal neuromasts) or scales. In Manuscripts 1 and 2, the development of the cranial lateral line system in brook trout and how climate change impacts the development of this system are described. The lateral line in …

Let's Not Be Dumb: Government Transparency, Public Records Laws, And "Smart City" Technologies, Amy Kristin Sanders, Daxton R. Stewart Jan 2023

Let's Not Be Dumb: Government Transparency, Public Records Laws, And "Smart City" Technologies, Amy Kristin Sanders, Daxton R. Stewart

University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy

As the tools to automate our lives become more commonplace, so do the concerns about their use and the data they collect. State and local governments in the United States are increasingly turning to smart city technologies for everything from law enforcement and traffic management to public health monitoring and wastewater testing. Yet often, citizens are left in the dark about the ways in which their elected officials are researching, purchasing, and implementing these technologies. Public records laws represent one mechanism to help improve the public’s understanding of smart city technology and its uses in their communities. But not all …

The Correlation Between Perceived Maternal Parenting Style And Perceived Emotion Regulation In Seventh-Day Adventists In Southern Brazil, Camila Cardoso Masotti Jan 2023

The Correlation Between Perceived Maternal Parenting Style And Perceived Emotion Regulation In Seventh-Day Adventists In Southern Brazil, Camila Cardoso Masotti

Master's Theses

Problem.\

One's ability to regulate his/her emotions utilizing coping mechanisms and dissuasive mental strategies is partly attained due to the correct functioning of innate biological systems and to life experiences that promote learning/training in this area (cf., e.g., Matsumoto & Hwang, 2012). The field of emotion regulation studies has extensively elaborated on a multivalent description of human emotional development, in which emotions are part of essential mental strategies for an individual's conscious and unconscious goals in life (cf., e.g., Lang & Bradley, 2010; Levenson, 1999). Therefore, as a partly learned ability, one's emotion regulation skills have been shown as positively …

Exploring Diy Urbanism: Housewives’ Participation In Recycling Used Cooking Oil For Candle Making In Tangerang, Indonesia, Ranti An Nisaa Ms., Dewi Pudji Rahayu Ms., Suci Lestari Ms.

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This study explores the do-it-yourself (DIY) project in an urban context, a candle making with recycled used cooking oil (UCO), aiming to empower housewives in Gaga Village, Tangerang, Indonesia. UCO, a household waste material, becomes a trigger for this project because it pollutes the environment and reduces soil fertility if discarded unresponsible. In this scenario, involving the participation of urban housewives can be a way to address this issue. Urban housewives have spare time between their daily activities and present great potential in such a project. Recycling UCO for candle- making material arguably can increase the family’s economic capacity and, …

Placing The Evolutionary History Of Desmognathus Salamanders In Context: A Phylogeographic Approach, Kara Jones Jan 2023

Placing The Evolutionary History Of Desmognathus Salamanders In Context: A Phylogeographic Approach, Kara Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Patterns of genetic variation do not arise in a vacuum but are instead shaped by the interplay between evolutionary forces and ecological constraints. Here, I use a phylogeographic approach to examine the role that ecology played in lineage divergence in the Desmognathus quadramaculatus species complex (Family: Plethodontidae), which consists of three nominal species: D. quadramaculatus, D. marmoratus, and D. folkertsi. Previous phylogenetic studies have shown that individuals from these species do not form clades based on phenotype. My approach to reconciling phylogenetic discordance was two-fold, using (1) genome-wide markers to provide insight into the …

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella Ec Kyllians Jan 2023

Examining The Effects Of Hyperglycemia On Retinal Regeneration, Emmanuella Ec Kyllians

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body processes glucose, leading to a cascade of other complications, one of which is diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR is a neurovascular disease that affects the retina and research has revealed the role of retinal neurodegeneration in its development. Animal models like zebrafish have emerged as important tools for studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying DR. On the other hand, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease that involves the progressive degeneration of rods and cones, and hyperglycemia has been found to impair regeneration. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects …

Competition And Herbivory Influence The Survival, Growth, And Physiology Of Native Tree Seedlings In The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland, James D. Shaffer Jan 2023

Competition And Herbivory Influence The Survival, Growth, And Physiology Of Native Tree Seedlings In The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland, James D. Shaffer

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Terrestrial plant communities are shaped by competition for resources, herbivory, and abiotic processes. Savanna systems represent a dynamic coexistence of contrasting life forms (grasses and trees) shaped by competition and disturbance. The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Savanna-Woodland (KIBSW) is described as an open woodland of shade intolerant species; however, climatic, and edaphic conditions can support closed-canopy forest. After European pioneer settlement (c1750-1800), over 99% of “savanna-woodlands” have been lost. KIBSW remnants are experiencing a recruitment failure, leading to a dominance shift in tree communities. I researched how tree-grass competition and mammalian herbivory influence KIBSW regeneration and maintenance. The KIBSW does not …

Context-Dependency And Sex-Specificity Of Dispersal Syndromes, Allyssa Kilanowski Jan 2023

Context-Dependency And Sex-Specificity Of Dispersal Syndromes, Allyssa Kilanowski

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

For populations in landscapes with increasingly heterogeneous and fragmented habitat patches (e.g., metapopulations), dispersal is an important behavior that leads to gene flow and connectivity among isolated patches. Because dispersal is a complex process, there are many traits involved. When suites of morphological, behavioral, physiological, and life-history traits covary with dispersal (e.g., a dispersal syndrome), the correlated traits can assist dispersing individuals through the complex process. Furthermore, once dispersal is completed, the correlated traits can influence the fitness of those dispersed individuals. Dispersal syndromes will likely interact with the local environment to produce ecological and evolutionary feedbacks on the metapopulation. …
