Sustained And Improved Ophthalmic Formulations Of Gatifloxacin For Better Therapeutic Outcomes During Topical Ocular Applications, Poorva Hemant Joshi
Sustained And Improved Ophthalmic Formulations Of Gatifloxacin For Better Therapeutic Outcomes During Topical Ocular Applications, Poorva Hemant Joshi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gatifloxacin (GTX) is a broad-spectrum 4th generation antimicrobial fluroquinolone used in the treatment of ocular infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjuctivitis. GTX (as a sesquihydrate) is commercially available as aqueous eyedrops for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (BC) which requires frequent administration due to low residence time on the conjunctival surface. The eye is a highly specialized photoreceptive organ, which is protected by a continuous tear flow containing antibacterial components. However, inflammation or scarring of the eye may be difficult to resolve once having occurred. Furthermore, initial infections if ignored are likely to invade the inner portions of the …
Determining Background Deep-Time Critical Zone Conditions In Mississippi Preceding The Onset Of Paleocene-Eocene Hyperthermals, Savannah Reese Rathbun
Determining Background Deep-Time Critical Zone Conditions In Mississippi Preceding The Onset Of Paleocene-Eocene Hyperthermals, Savannah Reese Rathbun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hyperthermals are periods of extremely rapid global warming. In order to understand the magnitude of hyperthermals, a more complete understanding of background conditions must be established. My goal is to study the paleoclimatic conditions that existed prior to the onset of Paleocene- Eocene hyperthermal events in order to establish background conditions. Relatively thick Paleocene and Eocene sedimentary units ideal for this study are present in the Mississippi Embayment (MSE), a major southwest- dipping sedimentary basin in the Gulf of Mexico coastal region of North America. The MSE contains an extensive record of Paleocene strata that were deposited prior to the …
Entrepreneurs Want More Than Just Money: The Role Of Subjective Entrepreneurial Success In Predicting Entrepreneur’S Grief Following Venture Failure, Joseph Richard Schaefer
Entrepreneurs Want More Than Just Money: The Role Of Subjective Entrepreneurial Success In Predicting Entrepreneur’S Grief Following Venture Failure, Joseph Richard Schaefer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focal topics of this dissertation are subjective entrepreneurial success (SES) and grief. Over the past three decades, the budding SES literature has seen accelerating growth since its conceptual inception in 1987, with 2016 marking a key event in the literature – the formal naming and definition of the SES construct. Research on the SES construct is of interest to scholars because it complements the objective economic conceptualizations of success often seen in the entrepreneurship literature, highlighting the idiosyncratic ways that entrepreneurs conceptualize and evaluate their success.
To contribute to the SES literature, Essay One of my three-essay dissertation, I …
Lipid Based Ophthalmic Nanoformulations For Ciprofloxacin, Moxifloxacin, And Cannabidiol, Ahmed Adel Ali Youssef
Lipid Based Ophthalmic Nanoformulations For Ciprofloxacin, Moxifloxacin, And Cannabidiol, Ahmed Adel Ali Youssef
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ocular drug delivery faces many challenges due to the unique anatomy and physiology of the human eye. The development of ocular drug delivery systems is subjected to a gradual shift from an empirical to a rational base due to a better understanding of the ocular barriers that control drug disposition in the eyeball as well as new approaches in clinical testing. Most of the topically applied actives are lipophilic with low aqueous solubility, and the ocular delivery of these drugs is posing a challenging task. Lipid-based drug delivery systems are well reported to improve solubility and enhance both bioavailability and …
America’S Hidden Citizens: The Untold Stories Of The Unconscionable Deportations Of Its International Adoptees, Halley Cody
America’S Hidden Citizens: The Untold Stories Of The Unconscionable Deportations Of Its International Adoptees, Halley Cody
Seattle University Law Review
This Note addresses how the U.S. should rectify the harms it has perpetrated on non-citizen adoptees by amending the current deportation statutes to prevent their deportation. Part I addresses the history of adoption in the U.S. and related effects on immigration law. Part II highlights the stories of Adam Crapser and Philip Clay, who were adopted by American families who failed to naturalize them as minors, and who were subsequently deported after they sustained criminal records. Part III examines the policy goals behind deportation as a consequence of criminal convictions, as well as remedies instituted to prevent unwarranted deportation and …
Comparative Leaf Water Absorption Between Chaparral Island And Mainland Taxa: A Common Garden Experiment, Humera S. Mirza, Lauren M. Tucker, Rodrigo Méndez-Alonzo, Edward G. Bobich, Frank W. Ewers
Comparative Leaf Water Absorption Between Chaparral Island And Mainland Taxa: A Common Garden Experiment, Humera S. Mirza, Lauren M. Tucker, Rodrigo Méndez-Alonzo, Edward G. Bobich, Frank W. Ewers
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
In California and other Mediterranean-type ecosystems, island species are typically exposed to more fog but less rain than mainland species. Because adaptations to absorb water from fog may conflict with those to minimize water loss, we hypothesized that island species should have greater fog absorption than their mainland congeners due to foliar uptake but at the cost of modifying other leaf structural and functional traits. To determine whether foliar water absorption is an adaptation to insularity, we compared seven physiological and anatomical leaf traits between congeneric island and mainland species of two genera, Ceanothus and Arctostaphylos, in a common …
On The Appeal Of Drug Patent Challenges, Charles Duan
On The Appeal Of Drug Patent Challenges, Charles Duan
American University Law Review
Administrative patent challenge proceedings, the most prominent form of which is inter partes review, have attracted much controversy. In particular, the pharmaceutical industry and its supporters have criticized the proceedings as unfairly biased toward canceling valuable drug patents. Yet there has been little study of the real-world, practical impact of these administrative proceedings on drug patents or pharmaceutical markets.
This Article reviews the universe of administrative challenges on drug patents that have proceeded through appeal to the Federal Circuit. The majority of patents challenged this way are deemed unpatentable at both the agency and appellate levels, and that administrative cancellation …
Public Health Product Hops, Michael S. Sinha
Public Health Product Hops, Michael S. Sinha
American University Law Review
Pharmaceutical product hops are anticompetitive maneuvers that often represent a last-ditch effort by brand manufacturers to preserve market share in the face of generic competition. An integral part of product life cycle management strategies, product hops may offer marginal benefits to patients but can substantially increase costs to payers and patients alike. Industry advocates, however, maintain that product hops represent essential follow-on research and development, resulting in the development of novel products that would otherwise never reach the market.
Is there a middle ground between these two diametrically opposed views? Might certain product hops be considered beneficial, perhaps if they …
Comparing Biofilm Forming Potential Of Listeria Species On Non-Food And Food-Contact Surfaces Of Importance To The Dairy Industry, Hannah Cooper
Comparing Biofilm Forming Potential Of Listeria Species On Non-Food And Food-Contact Surfaces Of Importance To The Dairy Industry, Hannah Cooper
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a foodborne pathogen of major safety concerns. This bacterium can resist/adapt to environmental stressors and persist through forming robust biofilms despite dairy plants following stringent surface cleaning protocols. Surface roughness is considered a major factor controlling bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. Food contact surfaces like stainless steel (SS) have low surface roughness for easy cleaning. On the other hand, non-contact surfaces like floors need a rougher surface to ensure employee safety. Hence, we hypothesized that Listeria biofilm formation would be lower on stainless steel compared to clay brick (CB; common flooring material in dairy plants). …
Effects Of Plasma Sample Handling On Equine Insulin Assays, Lauren Willett
Effects Of Plasma Sample Handling On Equine Insulin Assays, Lauren Willett
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Often, the assumption is made that the results of the various laboratory tests being run are accurate, and that abnormal results reflect a physiologic change occurring in the patient. Unfortunately, this assumption is not always true. Inaccurate results, for various reasons, are an inherent part of diagnostic testing. Having inaccurate results is often worse than having no results at all, because they can lead to an incorrect diagnosis or result in unnecessary testing, wasting the client’s financial resources, or potentially expose the patient to unnecessary risks in pursuit of the cause of an abnormality that does not exist. With appropriate …
Halo Meets Horn: Influence Of Dissonant Information In Impressions, Amber Sanders
Halo Meets Horn: Influence Of Dissonant Information In Impressions, Amber Sanders
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The halo effect is a cognitive bias in impression formation that happens when people assume that when a person has a positive trait, such as physical attractiveness, the rest of their characteristics are also positive, leading to an overall positive perception of that person (Thorndike, 1920; Radeke & Stahelski, 2020). Conversely, the horns effect links together a negative trait, such as unattractiveness, with other seemingly negative traits (e.g., selfishness), leading to an overall negative perception (Radeke & Stahelski, 2020). However, these impression formation heuristics can lead to inaccurate impressions and poor judgments (Baumeister & Vohs, 2007). The current study …
Implications Of Lgbtq Identity On Help-Seeking In College Students, Matthew T. Allen
Implications Of Lgbtq Identity On Help-Seeking In College Students, Matthew T. Allen
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
LGBTQ individuals find themselves experiencing both mental and physical health concerns at disproportionate rates than cisgender and heterosexual individuals. However, LGBTQ individuals have been shown to seek help for these concerns. Studies examining this phenomenon on college campuses have focused predominantly on mental health concerns. This study hoped to look at both physical and mental health concerns and determine the implications of an LGBTQ identity on help-seeking behavior in college students. The study utilized quantitative research methods through targeted snowball sampling on social media and email. At the conclusion of the collection period, 61 participants completed a survey that included …
Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt
Bayesian Structural Time Series Methods For Modeling Cattle Body Temperature In Heat-Stressed Animals, Lacey Quandt
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Climate change has had devastating effects globally, most commonly talked about during natural disasters and rising temperatures. Notably, the climate concern is turning towards agriculture and livestock. With rising temperatures, the prolonged amount of heat stress put on animals, specifically cattle, is becoming more apparent. Heat stress has been linked to a reduction in cattle growing and fattening, feed intake, productivity, reproduction, and fertility; increased heart rates and respiration; changes in behavior; and mortality in severe cases. There are abatement strategies put in place to lower heat stress in cattle, such as improvements in shading and cooling, nutritional management, and …

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain is a technology that holds great potential for increasing the efficiency of drug development for the central nervous system (CNS). In preclinical studies and both early- and late-phase human trials, fMRI has the potential to improve cross-species translation of drug effects, help to de-risk compounds early in development, and contribute to the portfolio of evidence for a compound’s efficacy and mechanism of action. However, to date, the utilization of fMRI in the CNS drug development process has been limited. The purpose of this chapter is to explore this mismatch between potential and …

Aberrant Lipid Accumulation In The Mouse Visceral Yolk Sac Resulting From Maternal Diabetes And Obesity, Man Zhang, J. Michael Salbaum, Sydney Jones, David Burk, Claudia Kappen
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
Maternal diabetes and obesity in pregnancy are well-known risk factors for structural birth defects, including neural tube defects and congenital heart defects. Progeny from affected pregnancies are also predisposed to developing cardiometabolic disease in later life. Based upon in vitro embryo cultures of rat embryos, it was postulated that nutrient uptake by the yolk sac is deficient in diabetic pregnancies. In contrast, using two independent mouse models of maternal diabetes, and a high-fat diet-feeding model of maternal obesity, we observed excessive lipid accumulation at 8.5 days in the yolk sac. The numbers as well as sizes of intracellular lipid droplets …

Joint decomposition of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series into time courses of neural activity events and hemodynamic response functions (HRF) can enable new insights into functional connectivity, task activation, and neurovascular coupling in health and disease. Current methods for this problem handle time series of either temporally isolated events or extended blocks of continuous events but not both; and they constrain the HRF to one specific functional form. We propose to use an autoencoder and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to overcome these challenges. The autoencoder uses convolutional neural networks to reconstruct the fMRI time series while estimating …
Development And Biological Evaluation Of Selective Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of The Human Cytochrome P450 1b1, Austin Hachey
Development And Biological Evaluation Of Selective Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of The Human Cytochrome P450 1b1, Austin Hachey
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The human cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) is an emerging target for small- molecule therapeutics. Several solid tumors overexpress CYP1B1 to the degree that it has been referred to as a universal tumor antigen. Conversely, its expression is low in healthy tissues. CYP1B1 may drive tumorigenesis through promoting the formation of reactive toxins from environmental pollutants or from endogenous hormone substrates. Additionally, the expression of CYP1B1 in tumors is associated with resistance to several common chemotherapies and with poor prognoses in cancer patients. However, inhibiting CYP1B1 with small molecules has been demonstrated in cellular and murine model systems to reverse this …

The Paradoxes Of Contingency: Stories Of Contingent Professional Tutors’ Lived Experiences, Beth Sabo, Kaia-Marie A. Bishop, Kristine M. Gatchel, Rachel Dick
The Writing Center Journal
Despite comprising the majority of labor in higher education in general and writing centers more specifically, contingent workers’ voices and experiences have often been overlooked. The contingent voices that have been represented have predominantly been those in director or administrative positions, not the professional tutors who engage in centers’ day-to-day consulting. This lack of representation in the literature perpetuates institutional inequities and belies a larger paradox: that contingent workers attempting to ameliorate the precarity of their situation may jeopardize their livelihood. Because contingent workers’ identities and roles have historically been ignored and marginalized, few research and publication options are available …
Real Time Panoramic Image Processing, Matthew Gerlits
Real Time Panoramic Image Processing, Matthew Gerlits
Master's Projects
Image stitching algorithms are able to join sets of images together and provide a wider field of a vision when compared with an image from a single standard camera. Traditional techniques for accomplishing this are able to adequately produce a stitch for a static set of images, but suffer when differing lighting conditions exist between the two images. Additionally, traditional techniques suffer from processing times that are too slow for real time use cases. We propose a solution which resolves the issues encountered by traditional image stitching techniques. To resolve the issues with lighting difference, two blending schemes have been …

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) affect outcomes of people living with psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. As experts in medication optimization, pharmacists play a vital role in identifying and addressing medication-related problems associated with SDOH. However, there is a paucity of literature on how pharmacists can be part of the solution.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review and commentary on the intersection between SDOH, medication-related outcomes in people living with psychiatric disorders, and the role of pharmacists in addressing them.
METHOD: The American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists appointed an expert panel to …

The Src family kinases (SFK) plays an important role in multiple signal transduction pathways. Aberrant activation of SFKs leads to diseases such as cancer, blood disorders, and bone pathologies. By phosphorylating and inactivating SFKs, the C-terminal Src kinase (CSK) serves as the key negative regulator of SFKs. Similar to Src, CSK is composed of SH3, SH2, and a catalytic kinase domain. However, while the Src kinase domain is intrinsically active, the CSK kinase domain is intrinsically inactive. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that CSK is involved in various physiological processes including DNA repair, permeability of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), synaptic …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Objectives: Prostate cancer (CaP) is the most common site of cancer in men in the United States and is very treatable when diagnosed in localized and regional stages. While there are widely available forms of screening that can detect CaP in its early stages, factors that can affect healthcare access such as health insurance, race, and Appalachian residency have been linked with differences in rates of distant-stage CaP diagnosis. This study aimed to explore the relationships between health insurance, race, Appalachian residency, and late-stage CaP diagnosis in the state of Kentucky.
Methods: A sample of 26,622 men from the state …
Juvenile Competency Restoration, David R. Katner
Juvenile Competency Restoration, David R. Katner
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Despite legal competence presumptions about juveniles facing delinquency charges, tens of thousands of forensic mental health evaluations challenge the status of court-involved children in the United States each year. Researchers now find mental health disorders prevalent among juveniles in the justice system, with up to 70% having a diagnosable mental health problem. It is inappropriate to think of adolescents as younger versions of adults whose behaviors can be viewed through the same lens as adult behaviors. The Article will explore some of the causes and conclusions about why many juveniles are not competent and why many of them may not …

A Novel Smarcc1-Mutant Bafopathy Implicates Epigenetic Dysregulation Of Fetal Neural Progenitors In The Pathogenesis Of Congenital Hydrocephalus, Amrita K. Singh
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Congenital hydrocephalus (CH) is a common disorder requiring neurosurgery in children, however its pathogenesis is poorly understood. Recent studies have implicated SMARCC1 as a candidate CH gene but variants have not been conclusively linked with a human syndrome, nor functionally validated in vivo. This study aims to (i) assess the extent of CH risk associated with SMARCC1 variants; (ii) describe associated clinical and radiographic phenotypes; and (iii) assess the pathogenicity and mechanisms of SMARCC1 depletion in a novel animal model of CH. A genetic association study was conducted using whole-exome sequencing from a CH discovery cohort consisting of 492 neurosurgically-treated …
