If More Mormons Attended University, Would Canada Be Okay With Polygamy? Unpacking Literatures Of Social Exclusion In Canada’S Continued Criminalization Of Polygamy, Maxime D. Matthew
If More Mormons Attended University, Would Canada Be Okay With Polygamy? Unpacking Literatures Of Social Exclusion In Canada’S Continued Criminalization Of Polygamy, Maxime D. Matthew
Canadian Journal of Family Law
In 2011, the British Columbia Supreme Court (BCSC) held it was constitutional to criminalize polygamy, framing the issue as principally about harm. I argue the Reference re: Section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada furthers a literature of social exclusion, reifying an oversimplified binary: polygamy is harmful, polyamory is moral. Using narrative theory, I explore how these mutually constituted opposites build off each other. Polygamist Mormons are often denied whiteness, seen as an unpatriotic and racialized Other. Mormon women are othered by their attire and, despite still falling under section 293, denied agency. In contrast, the court views …

Microcrystalline Dolomite In A Middle Permian Volcanic Lake: Insights On Primary Dolomite Formation In A Non-Evaporitic Environment, Xin Jiao, Yi Qun Liu, Wan Yang, Hong Li, Zi Yuan Meng, Min Ru Zhao, Zhe Xuan Li
Microcrystalline Dolomite In A Middle Permian Volcanic Lake: Insights On Primary Dolomite Formation In A Non-Evaporitic Environment, Xin Jiao, Yi Qun Liu, Wan Yang, Hong Li, Zi Yuan Meng, Min Ru Zhao, Zhe Xuan Li
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Lacustrine dolomite nucleation commonly occurs in modern and Neogene evaporitic alkaline lakes. As a result, ancient lacustrine microcrystalline dolomite has been conventionally interpreted to be formed in evaporitic environments. This study, however, suggests a non-evaporitic origin of dolomite precipitated in a volcanic–hydrothermal lake, where hydrothermal and volcanic processes interacted. The dolomite occurs in lacustrine fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the middle Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Santanghu intracontinental rift basin, north-west China. Dolostones are composed mainly of nano-sized to micron-sized dolomite with a euhedral to subhedral shape and a low degree of cation ordering, and are interlaminated and intercalated with tuffaceous …

We have previously shown that human and murine breast extracellular matrix (ECM) can significantly impact cellular behavior, including stem cell fate determination. It has been established that tissue-specific extracellular matrix from the central nervous system has the capacity to support neuronal survival. However, the characterization of its influence on stem cell differentiation and its adaptation to robust 3D culture models is underdeveloped. To address these issues, we combined our 3D bioprinter with hydrogels containing porcine brain extracellular matrix (BMX) to test the influence of the extracellular matrix on stem cell differentiation. Our 3D bioprinting system generated reproducible 3D neural structures …

Facing Eco-Anxiety In Education: Empowering Educators With Collective Action, Emotionality, And Transformative Pedagogical Practices, Tessa Jackson
Facing Eco-Anxiety In Education: Empowering Educators With Collective Action, Emotionality, And Transformative Pedagogical Practices, Tessa Jackson
West Chester University Master’s Theses
With the ever-present pressure of the climate crisis intensifying, the mental health impacts of climate change are becoming much more prevalent and severe. Eco-anxiety, the anxiety and fear people feel about climate change, is a rising issue in educational spaces, adding another concern to the overflowing responsibilities of educators. In this thesis I examine how educators can utilize collective action, emotionality, ecopedagogy, place-based education, and Indigenous Knowledge to face eco-anxiety in their classrooms and help students feel more hopeful and empowered. I analyze how the history of public perception of climate change leads teachers to shy away from emotionality in …
Books We Should Actually Burn: Why History Textbooks Are Best Left On The Shelves, Troy Everly
Books We Should Actually Burn: Why History Textbooks Are Best Left On The Shelves, Troy Everly
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This Critical Action Research (CAR) thesis combines my personal experience and the research of others to investigate the problems surrounding history textbooks. American History textbooks do a poor job of holistically explaining the past and often default to what publishers consider “safe” or “neutral” points of view. Textbooks present history from a white-male perspective lifting those stories while disregarding, discounting, white-washing, or ignoring the contributions, impacts, or experiences of people of color. After analyzing this concern I will discuss solutions and alternatives to history textbooks and why I have concluded that it is best practice to leave these books on …
Plurality And Epistemic Injustice: A Neo-Arendtian Reading Of Miranda Fricker's Epistemic Injustice, David Casciola
Plurality And Epistemic Injustice: A Neo-Arendtian Reading Of Miranda Fricker's Epistemic Injustice, David Casciola
West Chester University Master’s Theses
In this thesis I bring the philosophies of Hannah Arendt and Miranda Fricker into conversation. Specifically, I argue that through Fricker’s concept of epistemic injustice (EI) we are able to see more clearly the importance of testimony—lexis as an aspect of Action for Arendt—in Arendt’s socio-political framework. Arendt divides the world into the Private, Social, and Public as separate realms of human activity (Labor, Work, and Action respectively); it is in the Public where we are able to appear and express our plurality. According to Arendt this is the only space where equality must be ensured. However, in using …

Capturing And Scaffolding The Complexities Of Self-Regulation During Game-Based Learning, Daryn Dever
Capturing And Scaffolding The Complexities Of Self-Regulation During Game-Based Learning, Daryn Dever
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Game-based learning environments (GBLEs) can offer students with engaging interactive instructional materials while also providing a research platform to investigate the dynamics and intricacies of effective self-regulated learning (SRL). Past research has indicated learners are often unable to monitor and regulate their cognitive and metacognitive processes within GBLEs accurately and effectively on their own due mostly to the open-ended nature of these environments. The future design and development of GBLEs and embedded scaffolds, therefore, require a better understanding of the discrepancies between the affordances of GBLEs and the required use of SRL. Specifically, how to incorporate interdisciplinary theories and concepts …
Cultural Movement(S) And Counternarratives: The Rhetorics Of Native Womxn Runners, Kim Martinez
Cultural Movement(S) And Counternarratives: The Rhetorics Of Native Womxn Runners, Kim Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This analysis demonstrates the complex ways that Native womxn runners mobilize the rhetoric they create around and through their running activity to challenge settler colonial, heteropatriarchal ideologies in favor of Indigenous lifeways; build upon cultural practices that include running and a wider spectrum of gender roles to enact more inclusive, modern Native identities; and lead intersectional advocacy efforts that center Native communities. Utilizing a Cultural Rhetorics, Indigenous Feminist, and Decolonial framework that recognizes Native womxn as experts in their own lived experiences, I have gathered Native womxn runners' counternarratives from virtual spaces/social media to learn from their cultural, rhetorical (oral, …
Gendered And Racialized Bodies In Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Saphronia Carson
Gendered And Racialized Bodies In Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Saphronia Carson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In June 2022 the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, abandoning nearly 50 years of precedent, and removing federal protections for abortion access. In doing so, the Court drew on a lineage of explicit and implicit discourses that have constructed abortions, abortion providers, and pregnant and fetal bodies in ways that make overturning Roe seem inevitable. This thesis takes a reproductive justice perspective while conducting a feminist critical discourse analysis of the majority and concurring opinions in Dobbs. Two main findings stand out. First, the decision relies on originalist constructions of abortions, abortion providers, pregnant people, and fetuses to …
Christian Nationalism Among Evangelical Christians Through A Critical Race Theory Lens, Marina I. Rivera Ramos
Christian Nationalism Among Evangelical Christians Through A Critical Race Theory Lens, Marina I. Rivera Ramos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In this study, I conducted ethnographic participant observations and semi-structured interviews at two evangelical congregations in central Florida, Free Baptist Church (FBC) and Cornerstone Church (CC), to explore how Christian nationalist ideas (CN) are negotiated, embraced, and/or rejected in church messaging and among congregants. I collected notes from eight sermons at each church and interviewed a total of 14 congregants regarding their concerns and lived experiences as Christians in the U.S. and their opinions on racial injustice. Expanding on previous research on CN, I incorporated Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical framework to understand CN as inextricably connected to …
Sexual Violence In Armed Conflict: How Levels Of Sexual Violence In Peacetime Affect Levels Of Sexual Violence In Conflict, Sydney Snowden
Sexual Violence In Armed Conflict: How Levels Of Sexual Violence In Peacetime Affect Levels Of Sexual Violence In Conflict, Sydney Snowden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Why do some armed conflicts have higher levels of sexual violence than others? Some existing theoretical work has pointed toward the possibility that the presence of sexual violence before armed conflict occurs can impact the levels of sexual violence during armed conflict, however, little empirical work has examined these theories. This thesis uses new, unique data to address concerns about the validity of previous studies and to explore sexual violence over the boundaries of time, looking at pre-conflict levels of sexual violence in addition to levels of sexual violence during armed conflicts. Using a parallel mixed methods research design, this …

Analysis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Tobacco Related Samples Via High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Laser Excited Time Resolved Shpol' Skii Spectroscopy, Ahmed Comas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to cigarette smoke is well known. It is also known that PAHs are not inherent components of tobacco. Their presence in cigarette smoke results from the curing process of tobacco leaves used for the fabrication of cigarettes and the incomplete combustion of tobacco during the smoking process. The two chromatographic versions of EPA method 610 are popular approaches for the analysis of PAHs in a wide variety of samples. This method, which is based either on High-Performance Liquid-Chromatography (HPLC) or Gas-Chromatography (GC) has shown the presence of Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) in tobacco samples …
Using Gis To Better Understand The Cracker Community Of Pat's Island In The Ocala National Forest, Florida, Nicholas Kopp
Using Gis To Better Understand The Cracker Community Of Pat's Island In The Ocala National Forest, Florida, Nicholas Kopp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This research uses GIS methods to contextualize a Florida Cracker community in the Ocala National Forest. My case study is drawn from two seasons of fieldwork and supporting desktop surveys associated with Pat's Island, the home of multiple Cracker families. Cracker culture is historically categorized by its efforts to avoid modernization and prevent the commercialization of traditional lifeways in the quickly shifting society of late-19th and early 20th-century Florida. The geospatial expressions of these Cracker values are an emphasis on semi-remote living, adaptations to a unique environmental context, and the development of a semi-self-sufficient community. This research evaluates how GIS …
Clustering Of Diverse Multiplex Networks, Yaxuan Wang
Clustering Of Diverse Multiplex Networks, Yaxuan Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This dissertation introduces the DIverse MultiPLEx Generalized Dot Product Graph (DIMPLE-GDPG) network model where all layers of the network have the same collection of nodes and follow the Generalized Dot Product Graph (GDPG) model. In addition, all layers can be partitioned into groups such that the layers in the same group are embedded in the same ambient subspace but otherwise all matrices of connection probabilities can be different. In common particular cases, where layers of the network follow the Stochastic Block Model (SBM) and Degree Corrected Block Model (DCBM), this setting implies that the groups of layers have common community …

Electroanalytical Investigations Of Microrna-Conjugated Cerium Oxide Based Nanomaterials For Biomedical Applications, Chaimae El Ghzaoui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Diabetes patients are increasingly suffering from wound-healing impairments coupled with other severe medical conditions. High levels of oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines are predominant pathologic characteristics of diabetic wounds. Applying microRNA (miRNA) in gene therapy often successfully treats various disorders by generating highly specific bio-responses. Studies revealed that microRNA146a (miR146a), a regulator of inflammation, is downregulated in diabetic wounds. However, miR203 is found to be highly-expressed in diabetic foot ulcers in positive correlation with disease severity. We have synthesized Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) since they are used in various biomedical applications due to their high enzyme-mimetic activities and reactive oxygen …
Behavioral, Morphological And Genetic Differentiation Among Populations Of Enyaliopsis, Laura Macamo
Behavioral, Morphological And Genetic Differentiation Among Populations Of Enyaliopsis, Laura Macamo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The study of biodiversity is a fundamental part of the study of the ecosystem's function and stability and how changes in the habitat shape the interaction between species. In recent years, the classification of species benefited from the analysis of several types of data to aid the distinction of morphologically similar species. Enyaliopsis iaculator (Naskrecki and Guta, 2019) is a species endemic to central Mozambique. Different populations of E. iaculator were reported to exhibit differences in the time of the day the mating call is displayed, but no morphological differences were reported. Since call behavior tends to be species specific …
Using Homology Modeling And Computational Protein-Peptide Design To Identify Potential Inhibitors Of Cish Binding To Plc-Gamma 1 In The T-Cell Activation Pathway Of Blood Cancers, Evelyn Paquette
Chemistry Master’s Theses
The CISH gene product (protein) SH2 domain binds to PLC Gamma l and inhibits the normal function of the T-cell signaling pathway and immune response. This is a pressing concern in tumorous blood cancers as the body's immune system cannot fight against a growing cancer. Dr. Steven Ansell from The Mayo Clinic hypothesized that there must be a way to create a molecule that will bind more readily to the CISH SH2 domain, mitigating the inhibitory impact of CISH on T-cell .
Homology modeling and computational peptide design were used to investigate the Ansell hypothesis. Fir t, homology models of …
