Preservice Teacher Intersectional Awareness: A Qualitative Inquiry, Lindsey Pike

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the intersectional awareness of preservice general education teachers as experienced through an internship in an urban, Title 1 funded school. Intersectionality Theory (Boveda, 2016; Crenshaw, 1990; Dill & Zambrana, 2009; Jones & Wijeyesinghe, 2011) was used as a theoretical framework to inform this study. A descriptive phenomenological design (Creswell, 2013; Moustakas, 1994) was used to examine preservice teachers' (PSTs)lived experiences within their teacher preparation program courses and internship. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with preservice general education teachers. Data analysis was completed using Colaizzi's (1978) seven-step process as outlined by …

Probing Endothelial Cell Mechanics Under Disturbed Fluid Flow, Jingwen Wu Jan 2023

Probing Endothelial Cell Mechanics Under Disturbed Fluid Flow, Jingwen Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Endothelial cells, which form the inner layer of the vasculature, interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) by exerting mechanical contractile cell-substrate stress called tractions and cell-cell stresses called intercellular stresses. This cellular mechanical behavior involves many fundamental biological processes, including cell migration, differentiation, angiogenesis, and wound healing. Also, the inner surface of the vasculature, where endothelial cells reside, is constantly exposed to various fluid flows. The most variable fluid flow regimes occur primarily within branching regions of the vasculature. Endothelial cells residing within these regions experience disturbed flow, which consists of irregular flow patterns and extreme wall shear stress gradients. …

Low Energy Photon Detection, Tianyi Guo Jan 2023

Low Energy Photon Detection, Tianyi Guo

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Detecting long wave infrared (LWIR) light at room temperature has posed a persistent challenge due to the low energy of photons. The pursuit of an affordable, high-performance LWIR camera capable of room temperature detection has spanned several decades. In the realm of contemporary LWIR detectors, they can be broadly classified into two categories: cooled and uncooled detectors. Cooled detectors, such as MCT detectors, excel in terms of high detectivity and fast response times. However, their reliance on cryogenic cooling significantly escalates their cost and restricts their practical applications. In contrast, uncooled detectors, exemplified by microbolometers, are capable of functioning at …

Optimizing Deep Neural Networks Performance: Efficient Techniques For Training And Inference, Ankit Sharma

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Recent advances in computer vision tasks are mainly due to the success of large deep neural networks. The current state-of-the-art models have high computational costs during inference and suffer from a high memory footprint. Therefore, deploying these large networks on edge devices remains a serious concern. Furthermore, training these over-parameterized networks is computationally expensive and requires a longer training time. Thus, there is a demand to develop techniques that can efficiently reduce training costs and also be able to deploy neural networks on mobile and embedded devices. This dissertation presents practices like designing a lightweight network architecture and increasing network …

Dna Capture And Translocation Through Nanopore, Swarnadeep Seth Jan 2023

Dna Capture And Translocation Through Nanopore, Swarnadeep Seth

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

This thesis investigates DNA dynamics and translocation through nanopores using Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations, offering insights into sequencing technologies, DNA marker detection, and accurate barcoding utilizing solid-state nanopore platforms. First, we in silico study the intricate process of capture and translocation in a single nanopore. Our simulation reveals a high probability of hairpin loop formation during the capture process. However, attaching a charged tag to one end of DNA improves multi-scan rates and enhances unidirectional translocations. We use modulating voltage biases to multi-scan a lambda-phage dsDNA with oligonucleotide flap markers (tags) through a single and double nanopore system. Our study …

War, Cacophony & Beyond: Reexamining And Adding Security To Environmental, Social & Corporate Governance Investing, Seongjun “Spencer” Park* Jan 2023

War, Cacophony & Beyond: Reexamining And Adding Security To Environmental, Social & Corporate Governance Investing, Seongjun “Spencer” Park*

Fordham International Law Journal

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has exposed the current ESG approach’s weakness in many ways, most noticeably in the form of real-world consequences of negative screening strategies against defense and energy sectors. This Note attributes this weakness to a cacophony of risk and impact—a conceptual conflation between the two concepts in the relatively nascent ESG space. However, this Note finds that, even after resolving this cacophony, ESG investing still has significant problems that challenge its efficacy: (1) insufficient fairness and reasonableness of ESG ratings; (2) its uncertain future viability as an effective investment methodology under unfavorable economic conditions; and (3) its …

Membership In An Exclusive Club: International Humanitarian Law Rules As Peremptory International Law Norms, Ata R. Hindi Jan 2023

Membership In An Exclusive Club: International Humanitarian Law Rules As Peremptory International Law Norms, Ata R. Hindi

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

This paper entertains the somewhat scattered debate as to whether international humanitarian law ("IHL") rules could, and should, be considered peremptory norms of international law. For some time, the "basic rules of IHL" have been found to constitute peremptory norms of international law, with scant identification of those rules. Through a doctrinal analysis, this paper argues that, so long as they meet the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties' criteria, IHL rules should be treated as peremptory norms, creating erga omnes obligations for third States. Further, in theory, while the third State (external) obligation to "ensure respect" in IHL …

Identification And Influence Of Species-Informative 16s Ribosomal Rna Sequences And Evaluation Of Ocean Biofilms, Nikhil Bose Jan 2023

Identification And Influence Of Species-Informative 16s Ribosomal Rna Sequences And Evaluation Of Ocean Biofilms, Nikhil Bose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences are commonly analyzed for taxonomic and phylogenetic purposes because they contain variable regions that help distinguish genera. However, intra-genus classification is difficult due to high sequence similarity among closely related species. The biological impact of nucleotide variants in 16S variable regions are often unknown and hence their sequence differences are weighted evenly during classification, which provides poor species identity confidence. In this dissertation, I determined that analysis of intra-genus 16S allelic variants can provide species information and that nucleotide changes in 16S rRNA variable regions can impact ribosome quality. In one study, I analyzed …

Surface Engineering Of Nanoparticles For Efficient Polymerization Inhibition, Catalysis, And Plasmonic Sensing, Pooria Golvari

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Surface modification of colloidal nanoparticles is essential for broadening the scope of nanotechnology. In this dissertation, we discuss novel approaches to functionalize the surface of nanoparticles to tailor their properties for applications including radical polymerization inhibitors, supported heterogeneous catalysts, and building blocks for plasmonic devices. First, we investigate the interaction of hydrogen-terminated silicon nanoparticles (H-SiNPs) with Karstedt's catalyst and report a room‑temperature synthesis of Pt-coated SiNPs with highly tunable Pt loading. Analysis of the Pt on-Si ensemble reveals surface-bound Pt(II) on SiNPs which can undergo ligand exchange. Upon calcination, Pt-loaded SiNPs catalyze the hydrogenation of phenyl acetylene, and the SiNP …

Chemical Approach To Tire Mark Analysis, John Lucchi Jan 2023

Chemical Approach To Tire Mark Analysis, John Lucchi

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Fatal accidents on the road are an unfortunate daily occurrence, with almost 30,000 deaths resulting from hit-and-runs in the USA between 2006 and 2021. The identification of the driver responsible for this road crime can become a challenge. Nonetheless, the accident scene provides a large amount of trace evidence that can prove critical to this matter, one of them being the tire marks. While traditional tire mark analysis is full of physical information helping the reconstruction of the event, additional information can be extracted from the rubber left during the braking event. Each tire model is manufactured with a specific …

Understanding The Interactions Between Conservation Agencies And Rangers: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Christina M. Burton Jan 2023

Understanding The Interactions Between Conservation Agencies And Rangers: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Christina M. Burton

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Research describing conservation agencies has generally been exploratory and limited in the use of theory. Similarly, organizational theories can provide an understanding for how organizations change and adapt to their given environments, but they have not been applied to conservation agencies with unique challenges and strains from other public bureaucracies or private corporations. In expanding this body of literature, not only were these theories applied conservation agencies, but they were also explored in what Powell and Colyvas (2008, p. 276) called "microfoundations" of organizations, which focuses on the interplay between individuals and organizations. To explore this, a convergent mixed-methods design …

Employee Volunteering: Integrating The Volunteering And Helping Literatures Using A Latent Profile Approach, Emily Broksch Jan 2023

Employee Volunteering: Integrating The Volunteering And Helping Literatures Using A Latent Profile Approach, Emily Broksch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In recent years, more and more organizations are being held responsible for the social impact of their organizational priorities, commonly referred to as corporate social responsibility. As a result, there has been an increased implementation of employee volunteering initiatives. However, research on volunteering has largely remained separate from the context of work. As the prevalence of employee volunteering initiatives continues to grow, the need to integrate the theoretical and practical findings from the volunteering literature with that of the extensively studied and related discretionary prosocial work behavior (i.e., organizational citizenship behavior) research has become increasingly apparent. This dissertation examines how …

The Successful Characteristics That Contribute To Black Male Students Matriculating Into Medical School, Cedric Brown Jan 2023

The Successful Characteristics That Contribute To Black Male Students Matriculating Into Medical School, Cedric Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In 2019, individuals that identified as Black represented 13.4% of the U.S. population, 12.5% of the undergraduate student enrollment population and 7.1% of the medical school population. Subsequently, this has yielded a 5% Black physician population and workforce consisting of just 2.3% Black male physicians (AAMC, 2018). The disproportionately low Black physician representation contributes to greater healthcare disparity outcomes within the U.S. Black population. This study is centered on the post-positive characteristics of Black male medical students that have successfully overcome barriers to entry and matriculated into medical school. The phenomenological post-positive study was conducted through the lens of Self-Efficacy …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The potential of high-energy sources within the mid-infrared region (3-8 μm) has garnered significant attention for diverse research and industrial applications. Millijoule pulses extending beyond 3 μm can facilitate the production of x-rays with photon energies in the keV range through high harmonic generation (HHG). These high-energy x-ray pulses enable the characterization of electron dynamics within molecules and condensed matter materials. Additionally, the atmospheric transmission window between 3-5 μm allows lasers within this spectral range to deliver energy efficiently to distant targets via optical filaments without divergence, highlighting promising prospects for defense applications. In contrast to laser amplifiers, which are …

Understanding Outgroup Aversion Effects On Innovation Adoption And Polarization In Network Environments, Bruce G. Miller Jan 2023

Understanding Outgroup Aversion Effects On Innovation Adoption And Polarization In Network Environments, Bruce G. Miller

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Individuals' decisions to adopt an innovation can be influenced by the group identity of previous adopters or non-adopters in their social network. Previous research in innovation diffusion considered initial innovators and word-of-mouth imitator effects using analytical models. Simulations and agent-based models have been developed to address the heterogeneity of decision makers and the non-linearity of the process. A further refinement modeled adoption based on networks of social relationships between potential decision makers, analogous to the spread of disease on networks. In addition, adoption or non-adoption of some innovations has been characterized as a means of signaling identification with or aversion …

Student Perceptions Of Campus Crime And Victim Services, Tracy Gulliford Jan 2023

Student Perceptions Of Campus Crime And Victim Services, Tracy Gulliford

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Few would argue that college campus crime is a serious problem across the United States. Debate arises, however, regarding why the problem is so pervasive and how best to address it. This dissertation addresses that gap by exploring the nature and magnitude of the college campus crime problem followed by a rationale for studying student perceptions regarding knowledge about and use of victim services resources offered on the University of Central Florida (UCF) campus. Doing so is particularly important in light of the fact that five years have now passed since UCF launched the "Let's Be Clear" campaign designed to …

Chronic Exercise And The Treatment Of Progressive Disorders, Kristin Ann Richardson Jan 2023

Chronic Exercise And The Treatment Of Progressive Disorders, Kristin Ann Richardson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Exercise is a known, beneficial treatment for a variety of normal (aging) and abnormal (disease) declines in health. These benefits can be observed in a range of tissues, including the brain and muscle, and organelles, such as the mitochondria. Many of the mechanisms through which exercise can promote health in these contexts have recently come to light. However, how these mechanisms can be targeted to promote health in sedentary populations is still under investigation. In Drosophila, stimulation of octopaminergic neurons provides the benefits of endurance exercise to sedentary flies. Neuroplasticity following exercise is one possible mechanism for how octopaminergic activation …

Two Pathways Collaborate For X Recognition In Drosophila Melanogaster, Reem Makki Jan 2023

Two Pathways Collaborate For X Recognition In Drosophila Melanogaster, Reem Makki

Wayne State University Dissertations

Drosophila melanogaster males have one X chromosome while females have two. This creates an imbalance in X:A gene dosage between the sexes. This imbalance is corrected by increasing transcription of male X-linked genes approximately two-fold. This process involves the Male Specific Lethal (MSL) complex, which is recruited to Chromatin Entry Sites (CES) and transcribed X-linked genes where it modifies chromatin to increase expression. It is unclear how the MSL complex recognizes X-chromatin. Repetitive sequences strikingly enriched in X euchromatin, the 1.688X satellite repeats, also promote recruitment of the MSL complex to nearby genes. Unlike CES, the 1.688X repeats do not …

Prg4/Cd44/Pp2a Signaling Axis: A Significant Regulator Of Gout Arthritis, Sandy Elsayed

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Introduction: Gout is a common chronic arthritis caused by monosodium urate (MSU) crystal deposition in joints leading to activation of synovial resident macrophages and downstream production of interleukin-1b (IL-1b). Xanthine oxidase (XO) catalyzes purines into uric acid (UA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that activate NLRP3 inflammasome. Protein phosphatase-2A (PP2A) may be involved in regulating inflammatory pathways in macrophages. Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) and its receptor CD44 and its transducer PP2A signaling axis play a biologically significant role in regulating urate crystal inflammation.

Methods: Monocytes and macrophages were primed with TLR2 agonist and stimulated with MSU crystals. Fingolimod (PP2A …
